Second Choice

Summary:

A drunken mistake helps you open your eyes to your own worth.

Notes:

I’m not going to lie I just wanted to vent through writing so here we are lol. I love Dabi but his character was the one I needed to make this work, but I will probably write some wholesome stuff later. Let me know if I forgot to tag something!

Work Text:

How can you be so stupid? How did you let yourself go that far? Maybe you should have stopped after the 5th shot.

Well, the cat is out of the bag now. Dabi knows the truth, he knows that you have feelings for him because of your drunk confession.

Surprisingly, you woke up the next morning without a headache. You and Dabi exchange morning texts with some subtle flirt as per usual. So you assumed everything was fine. Everything was going well until Toga asked if you remember anything about the previous events. When you answered with a “No”, she sat you down and told you last night's events.

Apparently, after your 6th shot, you started to get clingy with Dabi. You didn’t want to leave his side and were trying to touch his hair. As well as saying that he was handsome, and then the liquid courage you finally confess you liked him. Even though you knew he was talking to someone. Although you told him repeatedly in your drunken state that you wouldn’t do anything since he was. But here’s the thing: he never stopped you or told you to back off.

Once she was done talking about it, the memories of last night came flooding back as well as the embarrassment. You wanted to panic, but what good would it do you now? You planted your face in the couch’s pillow wanting to bury yourself under the earth’s crust and never to be seen again.

“Ah, there’s my favorite people!” Twice said, he and Toga exchanged looks when you didn’t answer him, “Hey, what's wrong Y/n? Did someone hurt you? I’ll kill them!”

“N/n are you ok with me telling him?”

Toga and Twice have been your best friends since you joined the League of Villains, they’ve been there for you since the beginning and never faltered their loyalty and the same goes for you to them.

You nodded your head, and Toga explained the situation.

“Are you going to talk to him?” Twice leaned over the couch to look at you.

“What’s the point? He already knows how I feel.”

“Yea, but you were drunk, and maybe since he didn’t tell you to back off there could be some underlying feeling on his part.” You hummed in response, “Hey if someone came onto me, I would want to know if their feeling is true. Stop being a coward!” He scratched the back of his head “Sorry.”

“C’mon N/n, it doesn’t hurt to try if you really do like him.”

“It can be that bad if you guys were texting this morning too.”

You lowered the pillow from your face, “True.”

Twice ran around the couch to pull you up, “That’s the spirit!”

“But what about the person he’s talking to?”

“Keyword ‘talking’. It’s not serious or explicit, they literally started talking last week when he was at the bar, and let's be honest when was the last time he was actually serious about someone.” Toga giggled.

A small smile grew on your face.

“He should be back from his mission tonight so you can talk to him then.”

After the conversation, you decided to take a nap to ease your nerves before the talk. When you woke up, Toga was sitting in her bed sharpening her knives.

“Dabi’s back.” She used her knife to point toward the sliding door that led outside, “He’s on the balcony. Hurry and go talk to him, N/n. I have my knives sharpened and ready to go if he fucks this up. I got your back!” She stuck out her tongue and smiled.

You looked at the transparent door to see Dabi leaning against the balcony smoking. You get up from your bed and brush yourself off before heading towards the door.

When you walked out, you took a deep breath taking in the city. The city looked so beautiful from where you were standing. You stood against the balcony like Dabi although he didn’t acknowledge you, he continued to watch the city and smoke his cigarette.

You could feel your anxiety start to spike. How do you start this type of conversation? You’ve never confessed before, besides last night, but that didn’t count. Did it? Will this ruin your friendship? Do you still want to be friends if he rejects you? How can you stay friends with someone you lov-

“Alright, spit it out already.” Dabi brought the cigarette to his lips one more time before he disintegrated the bud. He continues to watch the city waiting for your answer.

You rub the back of your neck, “Well, I just wanted to apologize if I made you uncomfortable last night and I also wanted to tell you-”

“Don’t sweat it. You only made me uncomfortable when you got too close,” Your heart dropped, “but I know you were drunk. We all make mistakes.”

You tried to swallow a few times so you can get your voice back and hopefully ease some of the pain you felt in your chest. “I’m really sorry I made you uncomfortable, I was drunk but that doesn’t excuse my actions.” You hug yourself.

He finally glanced at you, “Like I said, don’t sweat it. Relax.”

His phone lights up on the rail with the caller ID name “Piece of Ass”. You both look at each other, then watch the phone ring until it goes to voicemail.

“Did you have something else to say?” His eyelids hung low.

“Yea,” It was now or never that you confess. Worst case scenario he flat-out rejects you and you ruin your friendship. “So, Toga told me that I kinda confessed to you last night.” When you looked at him he was watching you with careful eyes. You popped your knuckles, a nervous habit, “Yes, I do like you. But I know you're talking to someone, and I respect that. I just thought you would know my feelings.”

“I know.”

“What?”

“I know you like me but, listen, you're safe, and I’m talking to someone like you said. It’s nothing serious so they’ll probably be gone next week.”

When he looked at you, you were hugging yourself and looking at the ground. “I’m safe?”

If he knew you liked him, then why would he lead you on? Why not cut the cord before it gets too painful? Why entertain the idea of the two of you? Did all those moments together mean nothing?

“Fuck,” He ruffled his hair, “You’re someone good for later, not now.”

You released a dry chuckle, “Fuck you. This shit was a mistake.” You were about to walk out when he grabbed your wrist, you tried to tug your arm away but he didn’t budge. “Let’s go, Dabi!”

“No! Stop fighting and let me explain.”

Your jaw hurt from how hard you were clenching it. You wanted to leave but your heart ached when you looked into those fuck’n beautiful eyes of his.

“You got 2 minutes.”

He clicked his tongue before releasing you, “What we have right now is good. You get me and understand my goal. I want to complete that goal before I even think about you.”

Another sharp pain hits your heart.

“So, why give me hope that this might grow into something else?”

“Like I said, what we have now is good. I’m talking to someone but they won’t be here later, you will.”

The rage you feel growing inside of you was indescribable.

“That’s where you’re wrong” you glared at him, “I’m not going to wait or be your second choice. I may have liked you but I know my own worth.”

“You’re twisting my words-”

“No! I heard you loud and clear! Fuck you, Toya!”

In an instant, Dabi was in your face.

“Don’t you ever call me that!” He raised his hand.

You looked at his fist and smirked, “What, you gonna hit me or burn me like you do with everyone else?” He clenched his teeth still leaving his hand up, “You’re letting your goal consume you.”

“Don’t you ever say that name again, Y/n.” He said in a threatening voice as lowered his hand to point in your face.

You slap his hand out of your face glaring at him, “Noted.” Your shoulder collides with his when you walk past him to the sliding door.

Before you could enter the hideout he said, “Next time you like someone, make sure you get drunk with them.” You didn’t need to look at him when you could hear the smirk in his voice.

The anger you felt turned into laughter which stunned him, “Don’t worry, I won’t make the same mistake twice.” You tilt your head back to look at him with the biggest grin on your face, “Toga!”

Dabi was too focused on you, he didn’t notice the blonde girl crouched behind him on the rail of the balcony. Her eyes were glowing with glee as she held her newly sharpened knife to his throat. “I think we need a long chit-chat, Dabi. Don’t you agree?”
