Work Text:
The doctor came into the waiting room hours later.
"He's stable." They all sighed in relief and the doctor continued with his report. "However, his right eye couldn't be saved. He's resting right now, so if any family is present, you may go in."
Everyone looked at Yamada, as Eri held his hand tighter. He rolled his eyes, internally. He’ll remember to strangle everyone later because the doctor got the hint and started to escort them to Aizawa’s room. Aizawa and him aren't even married, let alone dating. They've always walked on eggshells around the subject. Yamada has been too busy to bring it up.
They both have. And Aizawa can't talk about his feelings worth shit anyhow, so it's both their faults, honestly. Enough about their relationship and back to Aizawa’s condition. The doctor had said they couldn’t save his eye. How is he going to use Erasure? Is he going to be able to use it ever again?
Once Yamada got out of his thoughts, Eri and him were already in front of his room door. When they walked in, Aizawa was awake and facing the unnecessarily large window.
"Shouldn't you be sleeping, Mr. Eraser?"
Aizawa jumped and turned to look at the two.
"Oh, Eri, hey. No, I'm not tired. Come here."
Eri ran over and climbed onto the bed beside Aizawa and hugged him. Yamada saw under his eyes. Eye? Was darker than usual. He'll convince Aizawa to sleep later, once Eri leaves.
"I made you something."
Aizawa raised his eyebrow, "Oh? What is it."
Eri handed him a folded piece of construction paper. The front read, "Get better soon!" with little hearts. Aizawa opened it and it had a drawing of him and Eri holding hands. When he looked up, Eri gave him a look of worry that soon faded, when he patted her head.
"Thank you, Eri. Your handwriting is getting a lot better."
Eri smiled and hugged him again. All Yamada could do was stand and silently watch. He didn't want to ruin their moment. Up tilll, their hug ended and Aizawa looked over at him.
"What are you doing over there? Come sit."
Yamada walked over to the chair by the bed, "How are you feeling?"
Aizawa slightly smiled, "Could be better. I could be out of the hospital."
Yamada rolled his eyes, as he crossed his legs, "You just got out of surgery. You should be resting"
"Exactly! Lemillion says that once you stay at the hospital for a little while, you'll be all better!" Eri pipped in.
"Yeah, you're right Eri! Aizawa is just stubborn."
Aizawa huffed. "I'm not stubborn. I would just rather be healing at home."
"You'll be out of here before you know it!" Yamada said.
He mostly said it for Eri. But Yamada and Aizawa knew that with his injuries, it was going to be a while before he was discharged. They continued to talk, until Mirio came to take Eri back to the dorms before lights out. Once they left, Aizawa and Yamada stayed in silence for what felt like forever.
“What’s on your mind? I can hear you thinking.”
Yamada rolled his eyes and slouched in the plastic chair, “Which thought do you want to hear first?”
Aizawa chuckled and said sarcastically, “The second one.”
“How’s your eye?”
Aizawa sighed and crossed his arms, “It’s fine.”
“Do you think you’ll be able to use Erasure any longer?”
“Probably not. I’ll be fine though. My quirk was never that useful anyway. I have other ways to defend myself.” Aizawa looked over at Yamada, “What’s next?”
"Why do we keep doing this?"
Aizawa furrowed his brow, "What do you mean?"
"We keep dancing around the subject of dating."
"I thought it was because of our hero work we decided not to? Right?"
Yamada chuckled, "If it was because of that, I would have retired already."
"Ah. Well it is still part of the reason."
"I mean yeah, but that's not the point. I'm saying our communication skills are crap."
"Ouch, well, okay. Do you want to date me?"
"Of course I do."
"Then, let's date."
Yamada uncrossed his legs and sat forward, "But it's not that easy, Aizawa. What if something else happens to you again? What if something happens to me? What if Eri-"
Aizawa leaned forward to put his hand over Yamada's mouth.
"We'll deal with it when the time comes. Together." Aizawa uncovered his mouth and grabbed Yamada's hand and interlocked their fingers.
Yamada chuckled, "You're still bad with words." Aizawa clicked his tongue, "You're right though. It's not going to stop me from worrying, but I want to worry with you. I want more than friends with benefits."
"Me too. It was getting too awkward. I'm surprised you haven't said anything sooner."
Yamada sighed, "I probably would've but I was busy with working and other things, I guess asking you out was on the bottom of my list."
Aizawa playfully smirked, "So you just wanted to sleep with me."
Yamada pushed Aizawa's shoulder with his other hand and scoffed. Aizawa unceremoniously leaned back on the bed.
Yamada smiled, "You dumbass. Well, I mean, that’s part of it.”
Aizawa waved him off, “Yeah, yeah.”
“You should get some sleep. We’ll talk more later.” Yamada got up so he could leave but Aizawa’s grip on his hand tightened.
“I like you. I really do. I know I’m not good with words and I’m not a touchy person but I’ll try to make sure you know how much I want to be with you.”
Yamada smiled and kissed the back of Aizawa’s hand, “I know you will.”
