Chapter Text
Every night his grandma tells him bedtime stories about anything but the book itself, his grandma would say "you'll find it out soon" everytime he asks about the enchanted book.
Now came the day that his grandma finally decided to pass the book onto him after performing the ritual.
his grandma carefully reached for his hand and gently placed an old looking book on his palm. The book glowed enchantingly as if happy to be in the hands of its new owner.twelve-year old sunoo looked at it with much excitement and enthusiasm with a little hint of curiosity.
"I'm entrusting this book to you and leaving it to your care, my little sun." his halmeoni had said to him, eyes crinkling and a gentle smile appearing on her lips. she looked at sunoo with such fondness in her eyes.
little sunoo eyes the book curiously, wondering what the book holds inside those pages that his whole family, from generations to generations had valued it with great care and sincerity.
"halmeoni, can I open it?" he turns to his grandma, asking for permission.
"no, not yet sweetheart. The day you can open it is the day elvará will open itself for you." his grandma had said carefully but vaguely. Sunoo doesn't understand but he still nods appreciatively.
Sunoo will value and cherish the book similarly to how his halmeoni and ancestors had valued it when they were still the keeper of the enchanted book.
Sunoo has the undying determination to show his grandma that he is responsible enough to be entitled as something his family considered an important position in their family. He will do anything to prove that his grandma isn't wrong in choosing him as the keeper among his cousins and leaving something so valuable in his care.
the book is a fucking menace.
It attracts a large amount of dirt that has to be dusted everyday. Sometimes the book even summons a large sway of air inside sunoo's room that sends every material in his bedroom flying and sunoo comes back from school greeted with a large mess and a responsibility to clean.
The worst thing it attracts are bugs. Sunoo had screamed a higher octave than normal; a note he couldn't even reach while singing, upon seeing bugs littered in his room.
The first time the book summoned something was when Sunoo was fifteen. Three years after he was officially given the title as the keeper of the enchanted book and was entrusted with the magical book.
Sunoo had practically yelped for help thinking their house was robbed. His mom and dad came scampering to his side when they heard his scream, searching for the culprit who dared to infiltrate their sacred house and ransacked valuable items from their humble abode.
They cautiously and carefully searched sunoo's room, checking if there are things a potential robber had snatched. but nothing was missing through the items they inspected in their son's room. everything was just scattered on the floor.
"It's elvará." They all jumped in surprise when sunoo's grandma spoke by the door, eyes narrowing upon a book holder where the enchanted book is properly placed.
When Sunoo's eyes landed on the same book his grandma is directly glaring at, he noticed that everything in his room was a mess except for the magical book. It stood tall like it's the only house that survived the storm that wrecked everything standing on the village it's located at.
Sunoo had learned that the book(he refuses to call it elvará) summons things when its keeper is away. It tries and hopes to summon its keeper but always fails miserably and ends up summoning various kinds of things.
His grandma had told him when she sees her own grandchild's face flush from anger and about to throw the book into the their neighbour's trash can('in that way it won't be in the same house as i am' sunoo had thought) and decided to just throw the thing the has been a burden for him in so many years.
To avoid the book from summoning a vicious demon or an ambitious villain, sunoo had decided to bring it everywhere he goes.
"Why the hell are you so clingy??'' Sunoo asks in rage, looking down at the book. It looks like a normal book and it never budge everytime he tries to talk to it. It almost looks innocent, like it didn't ruin sunoo's life every time it summons something harmful or troublesome.
The book doesn't budge like it always does. Sunoo thinks he must look like a crazy guy trying to talk to a book in the middle of his classroom because he felt someone staring at him with a questioning look, as if she's trying to understand why sunoo is talking to a book.
After that incident, he never tried to speak to the book again.
Sunoo is now eighteen and preparing for college. He is planning to apply to a lot of schools, hoping to get into as many universities as possible.
He's in his last year in Dark Moonlight Academy. Finals is just around the corner. He's on his way to his desk in a classroom full of students reviewing and a few joking around and gossiping with each other.
He needs to have high grades if he wants to get accepted to a prestigious university. so he settles on his chair, pulls his reviewer out of his bag and ignores his best friend, dongpyo who keeps poking at his shoulder, whispering he has some hot gossip to tell.
It's lunch time when he realises that he had forgotten to bring the 'cursed' book as sunoo wanted to call it. He is a hundred percent sure that the book has summoned some kind of alien or any weird shit in his room. He prays that it isn't bugs.
After his class that day, he hurriedly came home, ignored his mother who asked about his day when he was removing his school shoes and bolted straight to his room to find…
nothing?
The books on the shelves are still intact, the bed is still nicely done. There aren't things scattered on the floor, there are no bugs. His room is as clean as he remembers before he left for school.
"There must be something," sunoo thought.
He hesitantly stepped foot inside the floor of his bedroom. fear creeping up his skin as he steps further inside, he goes to check the book in the cabinet. breathe hitching in his throat, he stretches his arms to pull the cabinet open.
he let out a sigh of relief once he spotted the book inside. The book is glowing like the first time his grandma had laid it on his palms. but this time, the magical golden light that surrounds the book turned into something darker and bolder. The book glowed red.
His face morphs into something akin to confusion but later changes into a mix of fear and surprise. For the first time in his keep, the book has reacted oddly and unnaturally. He's at a loss of what to do since panic has long planted it in his nerves.
A dumb idea pop on his head, that idea being; opening the book might make the book go back to normal. In the midst of panic and fear, he acts upon it without thinking of the consequences.
It's when darkness fills his vision that he remembered his grandma's words.
"The day you can open it is the day elvará will open itself for you."
consciousness slowly slips his mind like fine sand slipping through fingers before regret even gets to gnaw on his gut.
fox eyes with honey-like orbs open to pink skies along with a colourful rainbow. Amazement appears on the soft features of his face as he takes in the wonderful view in front of him. Sunoo sits up and despite the amazing view, unfamiliarity seems to stick heavily on his chest.
Now sucked in the land of stories, words in front of him appear in large bold Lora font that states "Chaos have ensued, the main character has disappeared for an unknown reason, it's your job to fulfil their role and complete the story they have left behind." and just like that a blinding light took over his vision.
Opening his eyes, he saw a long path ahead, walls decorated in paintings of a family and abstract things. warm rays of sunlight beaming through the opened windows with velvet blue curtains. Despite the warm and soothing ambience he found in the place, Kim Sunoo couldn't find solitude in it. he still hadn't moved on from the shock, things had happened so quickly it hadn't sunk in his brain that he got stuck in a book.
His musings were cut short by a soft tune, the melody oozes comfort and harmonises with the sight in front of him, as if luring him in. Sunoo lets his feet lead him to where the sound is coming from.
The sound gets louder and louder with each step he takes closer to the music. once he was where the nice melody comes from, he grew astonished.
seeing elvará, the very book that trapped him in here and the same book that he had taken care of in the last 6 years made him have mixed feelings. Sunoo doesn't know if he should feel relieve or be threatened by seeing the book in its wake.
The book is open, something is written in its pages but sunoo can't make out the words because of the distance he put between him and the book earlier when he saw it.
curiosity kills the cat they say. Sunoo is no cat but curiosity did not spare him upon seeing him with the said cat. so he carefully trudges closer to the book. He feels the anticipation and fear of what's to come cursing through his veins.
he stops at a distance where he can read the written words but a bit far away from the book as a precaution.
