Work Text:
“Doctor?” Alistair entered the Tardis as he followed the Timelord in. “Did you mean it when you said I was your best friend?”
He looked at the other man in surprise. “Of course. What did you think we were, mortal enemies?”
Alistair sighed. “It’s just, I always thought that McCrimmon was your best friend; or Liz or Miss Grant or Miss Smith.
The Doctor went over to the console. “Jamie was my best friend for a time and so were the others, but I haven’t seen them for hundreds of years.” He paused. “Isn’t there a thing on earth, that people see their best friends as family?”
“I suppose.” He said.
The Timelord gave him a nod. “Well, you have to be my best friend because I see you as family. As the home I come back to when travelling gets a bit too much.”
Alistair looked down to the floor. “Oh.” He hadn’t really expected that to be the answer. “I rather miss you when you’re not around, Doctor.”
He smiled a little. “I miss you too. Until you annoy me in some way and then I wonder why I ever missed you in the first place.” The Doctor said the last part as a joke.
It made Alistair laugh anyway.
