Work Header

A whole cup of nothing

Summary:

They get bubble tea, cry a little bit, and laugh a little bit more.

Notes:

Based on my two favorite drink types at the bubble tea store. While no sugar can be extreme, I do advocate for the second lowest level - you actually get to taste the tea.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

RECEIPT

1 Pomegranate Tea
- Half sugar
- Less ice
- Tapioca / Coconut jelly mix

1 Black Milk Tea
- No sugar
- No ice
- No toppings

Persephone toys with the receipt while waiting for their order.

"How did you remember all this?"

She's back after two decades, and Hades just, remembers all her preferences. Even the most particular ones.

"I-" Hades didn't noticeably react, but she could feel the slightest quiver in his voice. "how could I forget?"

It's not the first time they've had this kind of conversation, but that doesn't make it easier for Persephone to stop the rush of wetness behind her eyes. She takes a moment, then leans her forehead into the side of Hades' arm to steady herself.

"I'm going to cry in the store." she whispers. This managed to prod Hades out of his own head, as he gently wraps his free hand across her shoulders.

"Would you like to wait outside?" he asks, nervously. She slowly shakes her head, and brings her own arms around Hades' own. She'd reach further, around his waist, but knows he prefers that only when they're alone. And just as expected, the wave of emotion has settled down by the time their drinks were ready. They find a place beside a bar table, Persephone sitting on a high chair while Hades stands beside her, leaning against the countertop.

"You know," she jokes, still a little pink around her eyes. "I still imagine that one day, you'll go on to say 'no milk, no tea', and just get handed a cup of water by a very confused server."

"No tea, no water, no cup, just a straw to sip on air."

Fortunately for both of them, Persephone hasn't drank more of her tea, or she would've spat it out at the mental image of her husband drinking air with a straw in all his dignified glory. She buries her face into her hand as her eyes tear up again, a mix of leftovers from just now, and fresh ones from the latest exchange. Hades reaches out to take her drink and set it on the countertop before she could drop it. Her muffled laughter stirred up a tickling in his own chest, and he lets it take over. His smile was hidden under his moustache, but his deep, soft chuckle mixes with Persephone's own.

It's nice to have her back.
