Work Text:
Morgan’s head was still spinning.
It hadn’t even been a test. It was a real, genuine question.
”So what are you gonna do when I die?”
The same answer came, as always.
”You’re not allowed to die.”
”Okay you say that, but I’m not getting any younger. Like, I’m gonna die of old age eventually.”
A look of realization. That was new.
”Oh, you’re talking about old age. Um—” Alex seemed to consider it for a moment. ”Probably also die.”
That was the record scratch moment for Morgan.
”You’re gonna what?”
Alex looked at Morgan like they were being ridiculous. ”Also die. Like I can’t imagine I’d last much longer than you, we’re the same age.” They looked Morgan up and down briefly. ”Honestly I’d be surprised if I didn’t go first.”
Morgan couldn’t process this. Not now. This— This changed the game.
They held up a finger. ”Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait— you’re not immortal?”
Alex actually laughed at that. ”No. Of course I’m not. If I was immortal you think I’d have gray hair and back problems?”
No. No, they didn’t, because they were the same age and they were relatively young to be graying, but Morgan didn’t say that.
”I thought that was you being like, weirdly masochistic.”
At least Alex seemed to appreciate that this was a lot for Morgan to process, because they kept finding the humor in Morgan’s blunders.
Alex looked affectionately at Morgan as they said, ”No, it’s just me aging normally. Like a normal person.”
Morgan’s brain caught up enough that they could ask another genuine question.
”But you could just— be immortal, right?”
Alex, once again, laughed lightly. ”Yeah, of course I could. I don’t know why I would, though.” A strange expression passed over Alex’s face briefly, before they schooled it away. ”Like, God, I couldn’t imagine being this bored forever.”
Morgan nodded, and Alex let the conversation pass.
There was. . . There was a lot to think about, now.
