Chapter Text
Artemis had heard people describe their wedding as the best day of their lives for a long time. And for a long time, she thought that they were exaggerating. Just saying what everybody was expected to say. And considering her parents’ marriage, she had a feeling some of them were definitely lying.
But she could honestly say that her wedding day was the best day of her life. Either this day, or when Wally came back to her. Honestly, it was probably a very close draw.
Standing hand in hand with the man she loved more than anything, in front of those closest to them, reciting their vows - it was all incredibly cheesy, and she wouldn’t have traded it for anything. The white dress, the church ceremony, the bridesmaids and groomsmen, the reception, the flowers, the cake.
The wedding reception was coming to an end at last after hours of dancing, drinking, laughter and the occasional use of superpowers. Guests had begun to take their leave, in various stages of inebriation, and the music went from disco and party music to slow dance numbers.
She and Wally were in the centre of the floor, slowly dancing together to a bunch of love ballads. Other couples on the floor around them, enjoying the romantic melody and the quiet. Her sister Jade and her brother-in-law Roy were wrapped up in each other. The recently married Connor and M’gann were together on the floor, as were Garth and Princess Perdita (who'd come all the way from the country to their wedding), and Ollie and Dinah. Her mom had gone home earlier in the evening alongside Brucely and little Lian.
Artemis couldn’t help the flutter of happiness in her chest. Not only was she married to the love of her life, but their weird super family had been there together. Things couldn't get much better than this.
While they were dancing, the sound of gentle laughter made her look up from her position resting her head against her husbands chest, towards the final couple still dancing. The best man and maid of honour of the wedding, their best friends, were in each other’s arms, swaying gently on the dance floor while as they chatted intimately.
Dick and Zatanna were her two closest friends in the world. As Wally’s best man and her maid of honour respectively, they had been a huge support these past few months not just with the planning of the wedding but also by helping Wally adjust following his return.
They’d both been single for a while now, but Artemis was sure that the two of them still really cared about one another. She’d seen the way they looked at one another with tenderness and longing. The way they held onto each other for an extra second with each embrace. The way they seemed to lighten up whenever the other one entered the room. It was just like her and Wally.
Even now as they danced together, Artemis could tell that there was something between them. They fit into one another’s arms, swaying to the music like the rest of the world around them didn’t exist. It was sickeningly sweet; Artemis of the past would have rolled her eyes at their behaviour but finding Wally again had made her more sentimental. Especially towards her friends and family.
The more she thought about it, they really were perfect for one another. Not just as heroes, but as people. Both were mischievous and clever, with big loving hearts and kindness towards all others.
At that point, she realised she had already set her mind to getting the two of them together. It shouldn’t be that hard. They just needed a nudge in the right direction. She immediately began considering different ways she could play matchmaker.
“What are you thinking about, beautiful?” The sound of Wally’s voice jolted her from her thoughts.
“What do you mean?” She asked him, feigning innocence.
“That’s your scheming face. And I can literally hear the cogs in your mind turning.” He teased her.
“Is that a superpower you have now?” She smirked at his annoying behaviour.
“I have many superpowers, Artemis. I have the power of being a super amazing husband, and I can always tell when you’re planning something devious. So, what’s up?” Wally's smug and insistent tone was so uniquely his; and as much as it made her want to give him a smack on the head, she lived him for it. Besides, it was no use keeping secrets from someone as nosey as her new husband.
“When I say ‘Dick and Zatanna’, what do you think?” She queried him.
Wally's answer came back immediately. “That they’re obviously still in love with one another. And as their best friends, we should try and convince them to get back together.”
Artemis couldn’t help but grin at her boyfriend’s certainty and compliance in her plan. “I knew marrying you was a good idea.”
“Does that we’re going to try to fix them up?” Wally asked with excited eyes.
“If we’re going to do this, we’ll have to be clever about it." Artemis' instructed him. "We need to be subtle with them, so it’s something they both want and go for themselves.”
“Good thing we’re the masters of subtlety, aren’t we?" Wally’s smugness made her roll her eyes.
“Me maybe. You not so much. But we’ll find a way.” But her words didn’t damper Wally’s enthusiasm at their new plan, and he brought his arms her to tighten around her waist.
“You know you like to act all mean and scary, but really you’re just a big ole softy.” Wally teased her. As annoying as he could be, his joy was contagious.
Artemis brought her hands to wrap around Wally’s neck and ruffled his red hair affectionately. “Only because I’m around a goofball like you all the time.”
“Well you’d better get used to this goofball, because you’re stuck with him now.” He reminded her, reaching his hand up to show off the ring she had placed on his finger.
Artemis felt her heart skip a beat at the sight of the ring. Her lip trembled and her eyes softened as she stared at the man she had married. He was an idiot.
“What is it?” Wally sensed her change in mood and leaned in close to comfort her, cupping her face in his palm.
“I love you so much.” She murmured against his lips.
“I love you too, babe.” Wally replied gently.
She pressed her lips to his for a passionate kiss. She’d never get tired of it, no matter how many times they did so.
“But this can all wait until after our honeymoon, right?” Wally quickly asked once they had broken their lips away from one another. They were set to spend two weeks in the Caribbean together, and there was no way she was going to interrupt that, as much as she loved Dick and Zatanna.
“Absolutely. I want you all to myself from this point onwards.” She reassured them both.
Wally’s face softened and he gave her a little smile full of warm, comforting love. “You’ll have me Artemis. Always.”
“Shut up, dork. You’re gonna make me cry again.” Artemis flicked his ear playfully, blinking away her tears again. She was going to have to beat up some bad guys soon to get her edge back. But for today, on her wedding day, she was happy to be as soft and happy as she liked.
Wally pulled her tightly against his chest like the affectionate puppy of a man he was. “That’s my Spitfire.”
And as she swayed in the arms of her husband, plotting how they would get their best friends back together, Artemis thought that her life was pretty fantastic.
