Work Text:

Tamaki Keigo loved the little café he always visited during his breaks. It was pretty small and never had many people, which suited the investigator just right. It had such a comfortable interior and they served the best coffee he’s ever had. It did come with a plus that the two baristas working there were two of the hottest people he'd ever seen. Touya had always greeted him with that loopy smile of his and Tenko never seemed to get tired of listening to Keigo talking about his cases. Of course he never gave out too much information but it was nice to talk about it. They had both given their own opinions and it’s even helped him solve cases before.

But at the moment the investigator just wanted to ignore work for an hour and just enjoy some peace and quiet. He heard the familiar bell chime as he walked inside in the café and took a deep breath, loving the smell of coffee in the air. Touya looked up from where he wiped a desk and gave him a smile.

“Welcome Keigo, the usual?”

“Yes please.” There were no other customers at the moment and Keigo wouldn’t have it any other way. He sat down on his usual chair and soon Tenko came up to him with his cup of coffee but also a muffin. Keigo looked down on it and then up at the other in surprise.

“Let us spoil our favorite customer” Tenko grinned at him as Touya joined them with a cup of coffee for himself and one for Tenko. “So how’s the case going?” Keigo couldn’t help but groan and the other two chuckled.

“Not getting closer to an arrest?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.” This specific case had been on his desk for almost two months now but he couldn’t find a single clue to help him solve it. People kept getting poisoned all over the city and with not a single thing in common between them. There had been a teacher, a politician, a student and a lot more. Almost 50 people had dropped like a fly while doing mundane things and the only thing they had in common was the poison they had ingested through a drink. It hadn’t been the same drink either. Some had coffee, some had tea, some even had chocolate. It didn’t happen at the same time, not in the same area, nothing in common and Keigo just couldn’t track it.

“I’m sure you will figure it out soon” Touya said and Keigo couldn’t help to sigh.

“Yeah, but how many more have to die before I do.”

“Maybe just one.” It was something in the tone Tenko used that made Keigo stop for a second, but he just shrugged it off as they were all being tired. He picked up his coffee and took a sip before taking the muffin.

Said muffin tasted like blueberries and heaven and Keigo almost moaned at the taste.

“Did you like it?” Keigo hummed at Touya’s question and took another bite. Tenko seemed pleased with it.

“I tried a new recipe. Wait, I got another one I want you to try.” The light haired man left and came back with a chocolate muffin. Keigo almost drooled at the sight of it and the other two laughed at his expression. “I hope you like this one.” Keigo took a sip of his coffee before taking a bite of the new one.

“This tastes amazing, Tenko, you just have to sell these ones. Or maybe not, because I will gain so much weight eating these everyday.” The baristas laughed at him as he stuffed his mouth full with muffin.

“We will see, but if you’re good we can have one ready for you from time to time.” Keigo almost choked as Touya winked at him. The dark haired man always flirted with him and it made things with Keigo’s feelings that he did not want to think about.

“Anything to make our favorite customer happy” Tenko said with that soft smile of his that he never really showed and Keigo was sure his heart skipped a beat. Stupid heart and stupid feelings.

They kept talking for a while as Keigo finished his coffee and muffins and then it was time for him to go back to work. He had already stayed for longer than he should have but he always had a hard time leaving the little café. But in the end duty called as he got called back to the office. The two baristas walked him to the door and Tenko gave him a take away box with more muffins before they said goodbye and Keigo walked back to the office, thoughts filled with the two men.

Keigo began feeling a headache forming as he came closer to the station and soon it evolved into a full blown migraine. He groaned and stopped by a corner, closing his eyes as the world began spinning around him. Something was really, really wrong. Slowly he took another step and it felt like his head would split in two.

Slowly he got closer to the station and he reached for his phone with the plan to call his colleague. Tsunagu could meet him and probably tell him what was wrong with him.

“Keigo? Where are you?”

“C-Corner.” He felt his throat tighten and he dropped to his knees as he tried to take a breath. Darkness shimmered at the end of his eyesight and he panicked even more. What the hell was wrong with him?

Shouting could be heard and when he looked up he saw Tsunagu run towards him. The latter sank down in front of him, asking what was wrong, and that was when Keigo saw the take away box. The coffee. And then everything turned back.

“You shouldn’t have given him the box, they can track it back to us.” Tenko rolled his eyes but didn’t look away from the TV in the café. The news was on and talking about a detective who’s in the hospital after being poisoned.

“And you should have used the usual amount of the poison, but yet you didn’t. Are you getting soft, Tou?” Said man just scoffed. The video someone took of Keigo falling to the ground was shown on the TV again and they couldn’t help but smirk. The investigator wouldn’t survive, and even if he did, it would be too late to stop them. The feeling of power they felt every time the news came on talking about people dropping like flies around the city, just because of them.

The bell chimed as a customer came inside the shop and Touya took the order while Tenko got ready to get back to work. He reached for the small bottle of powder by the coffee machine and added a tablespoon of it to the cup. No, they wouldn’t stop anytime soon.

Notes:

I am kinda thinking of writing a part 2 where Keigo survives and go and talk to them, but not sure yet.

Thank you for reading and I hope you liked it!
