Chapter Text
"Happy birthday, Joonghyuk-ah," Kim Dokja whispered after he hummed the classic birthday song.
Kim Dokja and Yoo Joonghyuk have always been together. They had been friends for years, since the first day of college, when they had met in the cafeteria and been paired for a study group. They had been inseparable ever since.
They had gone to the same university, had taken the same classes, and had even lived in the same dorm. They had been roommates, best friends, and lovers. They had been through everything together.
Now, they were in the same place again, in the same city, in the same hospital. They were both in their early thirties, both single, and both had lost their partners to cancer. They had been through a lot of pain and loss. And they had been through it together.
So, when Yoo Joonghyuk was in the hospital and not doing well, Kim Dokja was there for him. He had been there for him since the day he had been admitted. Even when Joonghyuk was sleeping, he was there. He had been there the day before and the day before that. He had been there the day he had been told that Joonghyuk was going to die.
...
And now, he was there for his birthday. He was there for the first time in years. He was there to wish him a happy birthday and to sing him the birthday song. He had been there the whole time. And he was still there.
"Happy birthday, Joonghyuk-ah," he whispered after he hummed the birthday song.
