Chapter Text
Though Albedo knows about many things in the world, the concept of marriage is not one of them.
Logically, he knows what marriage is. Married couples, both successful ones and those falling apart at its seams, take residence in Mondstadt’s walls. Just from observing that, Albedo had decided a long time ago that marriage was not something he would be particularly interested in. Relationships are tedious enough, and marriage is the ultimate form of that. To be able to promise your entire life to someone is to promise years of maintaining one special bond. It takes work to make a marriage last. Frankly, Albedo did not want to spend time and energy on something so frivolous. He has his research to focus on, after all.
Slowly, that changed.
Relationships became something meaningful, something to be treasured. Klee was the first one, the one to teach him that there was something to treasure in the time you spent with someone. Then came Sucrose, and the rest of the Knights, each one being a daily part of Albedo’s life. Albedo would never say he’s good at relationships, but he didn’t hate them. He even began to appreciate the Traveler and how they had a knack for introducing Albedo to people from lands far away.
And then, there was Kaeya Alberich.
Kaeya Alberich’s introduction was not anything special. The two were introduced as co-workers and with a firm handshake, the two of them went off on their separate ways. Albedo could at least admit Kaeya was aesthetically pleasing, and he found himself doodling the other knight every so often in his notes.
That was supposed to be it. Then Klee began to beg Albedo to come along on her adventures so she could spend time with her two favorite people in the world. Kaeya, the first time that happened, was waiting for Klee with a soft grin, one that seemed more gentler than the sharp thorns he often wore during work. Seeing this smile almost felt like finding one of Klee’s secret treasures.
Soon, Kaeya slid into Albedo’s life with ease. In between the late nights looking over paperwork and the days carrying Klee’s treasures back to Mondstadt, Albedo found a close companion. He found himself looking for Kaeya wherever he went, looking for the glimpse of that blue hair. Albedo had initially dismissed this as simply missing a friend, especially since his long hours in Dragonspine often kept him away from the people he cared about.
But once, in the middle of a meeting, Albedo had looked up and met Kaeya’s eye from across the table.
Kaeya smiled. He closed his eye. It took a few seconds for Albedo to realize it was supposed to be a charming wink, a way for Kaeya to catch his attention. Instead, it made Kaeya look more like the sleepy cat that hangs around Headquarters.
Somehow, that silly, meaningless action made Albedo’s heart skip a beat.
The first time Kaeya heard that story, he laughed. “Surely, you had to fall for me somewhere else. Who falls in love in the middle of a meeting? It’s unromantic.”
Albedo shrugged, trying to finish the paperwork in front of him “Well, I’m sure I had feelings before then. That’s only when I just noticed.”
“Because Jean was talking about something so boring you could only pay attention to me? Am I really that attractive?”
“Something like that,” Albedo had looked up then. Kaeya was sitting on the spare coach in Albedo’s office, perched on the side.
He had looked surprised, like he didn’t realize Albedo would just admit something like that. Albedo decided then that he quite likes that expression on Kaeya’s face, the disbelief that someone actually loved him.
And wasn’t that truly something so strange? In the middle of their mundane days, with the whispers of destiny lurking, they had fallen in love. They had found peace, despite everything that fate had planned for them.
Their love, Albedo thinks, must be a form of rebellion.
Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that marriage is the next, most rational step.
Yet, it is not Albedo or Kaeya who had the idea first.
The idea is Klee’s
“Albedo?” Klee pipes up from her spot on the floor, crayons surrounding her as she colors one of her many masterpieces.
Albedo hums in response, not looking up from the slime samples he was examining. He has a rather strange request from the Adventurer’s Guild to research the buoyancy of Anemo slimes. Something about bored travelers with too much freetime. “Yes, Klee?”
“When will you and Kaeya get married?”
Albedo blinks. He sets his notepad down. “Married?”
“Yeah!” Klee holds up her drawing. A blonde figure is holding hands with a blue-haired, eyepatch wearing individual. “Big Sister Lisa says that when people love each other a lot, they get married! It always happens in stories too! With princesses and knights and a giant castle! It means they get a happy ending and have a huge wedding! Will you have a wedding, Albedo? I wanna be the flower girl if you do!”
Albedo sighs. Klee truly has a mind of her own. Why was Lisa even talking to her about something like that? “Klee, Kaeya and I are not getting married any time soon. It takes a lot to plan something as important as that.” And money, though their combined captain salary should probably be enough. Albedo shakes his head, derailing that train of thought. “Also, weddings are outside my field of expertise. I know nothing about them.”
To Albedo’s surprise, Klee looks scandalized at his response. Her eyes go wide as she covers her mouth in a gasp. “But Albedo! Don’t you love Kaeya?”
“Erm…yes, of course.”
“Then you should marry!” Klee replies with a giggle. “If you need help, Klee can help! I know lots and lots about weddings from the books I read. I’ll be the expert!”
She begins a long, winded ramble about everything that’s required at a wedding. Once Klee gets attached to something, it’s hard to convince her otherwise.
Still…Albedo can’t help but notice that Klee actually has a point. He would have to ask Kaeya about it, yes, but this relationship really was for him, isn’t it? He doesn’t plan to have a life with anyone else, and he can’t picture a future without Kaeya in it. It may not be the typical, Mondstadtian married life, but it would be their life together.
Maybe that’s all he really needed to be able to marry someone.
“Klee.”
His younger sister pauses. “Yes?”
“What do you know about marriage proposals?”
It turns out that Klee knows a surprising amount about marriage proposals. Albedo will have to praise Lisa for her lesson plans later on, even if he’s still not entirely sure why she’s learning this material.
“So, there’s always a ring, no matter what! Big Sister Lisa, and even Mama, talk about all the different cultures there are though. Different places have different traditions. Mondstadt has different ones from Liyue and then Liyue has different ones from Inazuma. There’s also different gifts you can give and sometimes you have to do something special…”
Well, now Albedo has options. A traditional marriage proposal may have a ring, yes, but would he really consider him and Kaeya a traditional couple?
This is how Albedo ends up in the library, knee deep in books describing cultural courtship and proposal practices. As a once former outlander to Mondstadt, he wouldn’t say he’s familiar with their customs. Even now, he still learns new things from his friends and co-workers.
Still, Mondstadt has been their home for a while now. The two of them will gladly do whatever it takes to protect the land they love. It’s a path they have chosen for themselves. The traditions of Mondstadt are also the most straightforward, often involving wine, flowers, and song. It would be achievable to have a respectable, perfect, Mondstadtian proposal.
This wouldn’t be completely fitting to them though.
Albedo knows that while they’ve chosen their paths a long time ago, Kaeya still knew Khaenri’ah as a home once. Albedo has always been more detached, never stepping into the remains of the nation itself and only hearing bits and pieces of the nation from stories from his master.
Kaeya, however, could occasionally be seen reading through vast tombs from the restricted section, searching for any ounce of knowledge. He’s seen Kaeya painstakingly deciphering the language of the hilichurls and the Abyss ruins, trying to find something that got distorted with time. Kaeya wants knowledge that’s long gone, preserving anything he can find.
Albedo has even seen Kaeya hum old lullabies from distant memories whenever Klee is having a particularly rough night.
Home…is not Khaenri’ah. But it’s important to Kaeya. Albedo has to respect that shared culture of their’s.
However, finding a mention of Khaenri’ah has proven time and time again to be easier said than done. Albedo can feel the distant pounding of a growing headache, his eyes getting tired from squinting at tiny lines of text. He’s lucky to find a sentence that mentions Khaenri’ah, before the book returns back to describing Mondstadt.
“Oh? Looks like our Chief Alchemist is conducting personal research.” Albedo looks up, to see Lisa leaning over, her hands carrying over a stack of books. “Now, that doesn’t look very scientific, does it?”
Albedo rubs his eyes. “Lisa, apologies for not noticing you right away. Time must have run away from me again.”
“That’s perfectly fine, sweetie,” Lisa smiles as she puts away the books in their proper place. “It’s nice to see you so interested in something not related to alchemy or art. Care to explain the sudden interest in Mondstadt customs? Surely, you’ve experienced most of them by now?”
“Well…” Albedo’s voice trails off. He’s not entirely sure about sharing his plans with his fellow co-workers, but well, the Knights of Favonius were more than that at this point, weren’t they? Just like Kaeya, they too, have become his cherished friends and family.
He can also admit it’s not him with the overly romantic experience. As steady as his relationship with Kaeya is, it’s often Kaeya that gifts Albedo with extravagant gifts. At most, Albedo returns flowers or drawings, but resorting to his normal gift methods seems underwhelming for something as grand as a proposal. If Lisa was more than willing to teach Klee, then surely, she’s the best choice for assisting Albedo.
Still, telling any Knight would mean that his plans would enter the gossip mill eventually. Albedo cherishes his last few seconds of privacy before turning towards Lisa in a determined manner.
“I’m going to propose to Kaeya.”
Saying the words out loud made the plan feel more real, more concrete. His voice didn’t waver but his heart pounds against his chest. Albedo can only hope he looks confident.
Lisa’s eyes soften, her hand coming up over her heart. “Oh my. I can’t say I’m surprised, but between the two of you…well, our little alchemist has truly grown up, hasn’t he?”
Albedo chuckles, any nerves evaporating. “Lisa, we are not that far apart in age.”
“Still, I would’ve never expected you to be the one to propose.” Lisa places her hand on Albedo’s shoulder. “I’m glad you told me. I imagine it’s still a secret?”
“Yes, naturally.” Albedo appreciates Lisa asking, but he imagines she’ll be so excited and tell Jean anyway. Nothing ever stays too secret among the Knights. “I still need to discuss the details with Kaeya, but the actual proposal plans should be kept as much a secret as possible.”
“And I imagine you need help with the proposal?”
“If it’s not too much trouble…”
“Oh Albedo, it’s never any trouble.” Lisa turns toward a shelf, delicately picking out books and handing them to Albedo at a brisk pace. “There’s a lot we have to cover if you want to follow traditions.”
As the stack of books steadily gets higher, Albedo mentally blocks out the week for research. This will take longer than he thought it would.
It takes days and hours of planning, but between Lisa and Albedo, the two of them manage to scramble together a plan. Lisa had remarked that some of Albedo’s ideas may be a bit…ambitious, but she supported him nonetheless.
Now came the important part. Kaeya’s consent.
Albedo imagines someone more romantic than him would pick a special place to ask this question. But even Albedo could admit that he was a bit tired of trying to be romantic and he wanted this part to be easy.
So he asked, in the middle of the night, while the two of them were finishing up the paperwork for the day. This time, they were in Kaeya’s office. Albedo had dragged over a chair so he could sit opposite from him, stacks of paper separating the two of them
A lot of their important conversations seemed to happen in times like this. Conversation of whispered secrets. Albedo finds it quite fitting that he should ask here.
Albedo finishes signing off his stack and pushes it to the side. He spends a few seconds just watching Kaeya. The other man may have a reputation for being lazy, but that’s only because he puts the work in when no one else could see it. Kaeya’s eyebrows are scrunched up while he reads the document, his hand absentmindedly twirling the ends of his hair and his leg bouncing up and down. This is Kaeya at his best, thinking and solving problems. Albedo adores him so much.
The spell breaks and Kaeya looks up, his expression brightening as it always does when he sees Albedo. “Something on your mind, my dearest?”
Albedo nods. “I’d like to get married if you consent to it.”
The range of Kaeya’s facial expressions is quite impressive. Albedo watches as Kaeya splutters, his eye widening. He tugs his cape closer to his face, as if to hide under the fur.
Kaeya laughs, the sound nervous and high-pitched. “Haha, Albedo, I must be more tired than I thought! I thought you mentioned marriage out of all things-”
“No, you heard correctly,” Albedo says. “I would like to marry you.”
Kaeya’s jaw opens. It closes. For whatever reason, Kaeya gets up and starts to pace the room. Albedo worries for a split second that he broke something in Kaeya’s brain before the other starts to ramble.
“I can’t believe it, we’re going to marry, Albedo and I-”
Albedo can’t help it. He smiles. “I should take that as a yes?”
Kaeya stops. He walks toward Albedo and takes both of his hands. “Of course, there’s no one else I want to marry. I…I don’t know what to say.” And he kisses both of Albedo’s hands, rubbing his thumb over them. The two of them had taken off their gloves long ago, only to make the paperwork a bit more bearable. Even now, the feeling of Kaeya’s bare hands against his, feels remarkable and new.
This, Albedo thinks, is why Kaeya is the one he must marry. “I’m glad you think so.”
“Still, dearest, there are more romantic ways to propose,” Kaeya sighs. “We’re at work. What’s with you and being romantic at work? Do you even have a ring?”
“Of course, I do. This is not the only part of the proposal. I just wanted to check before I pursued my courtship.”
Kaeya blinks in confusion. “Courtship? Parts? Albedo, what are you talking about-”
Albedo rolls his eyes and leans forward to kiss Kaeya. Sometimes, he really does talk too much. “You’ll see. It’s a surprise.”
“A surprise? Well…I’ll look forward to it.” Kaeya presses his forehead against Albedo. “I can’t say I want to do any more work for the night. Why don’t we take a break?”
They always take a break after these late night conversations. And like always, they never seem to get back to actual work, dedicating their time to light touches and kisses instead.

Chapter Text
“Traditionally, Mondstadt proposals are reflections of the Anemo Archon. Usually, all one gives is the other’s favorite flowers and a love poem,” Lisa points at a section in the book, sliding it over so Albedo can see it better. “It’s not too different from Windblume activities.”
Albedo figured that Mondstadt proposals weren’t too exciting when he first started his research. Honestly, he should be okay with something so simple. He can easily grab Calla Lilies for Kaeya and write some sort of poem.
The only problem is that Albedo gifts Kaeya Calla Lilies rather often. Even Klee is fond of gifting the flowers to him. Kaeya’s office has a vase that always seems to have a fresh bouquet.
“Is there nothing else?” Albedo frowns. “Nothing more…obscure?”
“Well, I suppose you could look at Mondstadt fairy tales for inspiration,” Lisa picks a book with an intricate cover from the stack. Albedo quickly realizes it’s a book he often sees Klee look through. “Couples do like to copy their favorite tales sometimes, don’t they?”
Albedo takes the book, skimming through the pages for anything interesting.
A drawing of a bard playing a flute on a tree branch while a traveler rests underneath the tree’s shade catches his eye.
“What is this story about?”
“Oh?” Lisa leans over. “This one is sweet. A traveler, heavily wounded, comes across a bard. The bard heals his wounds with his music. The two then would later wed underneath the tree. Are you thinking of doing the same? I do admit a wedding at Windrise would be rather nice…”
Albedo traces the illustration with his finger. The artist had drawn the leaves with a twirling, complicated design that seemed to invoke the winds itself.
“Do you think it would be very hard to gift a tree?”
Lisa coughs. “Excuse me?”
Albedo will admit that later on, this is not his best idea. To make a simple tradition more difficult just because Kaeya deserves something a bit more special is probably a bit foolish.
But Albedo never does anything half-way, especially when it comes to Kaeya.
The sun has barely risen as Albedo gets up, uncurling himself from Klee. His sister mumbles something incoherent before rolling over, her body splayed over the spot Albedo was. Amused, Albedo tries to shake her as gently as possible.
“Good morning, Klee. It’s time to wake up now.”
“I don’t want to…” Klee whines, clutching Dodoco tighter. “Wanna play with Albedo longer….”
Albedo shakes her again. “Klee, you know you have to wake up to play with me. Don’t you remember what day it is? You have to help me and Sucrose today.”
Instantly, Klee shoots up. “It’s proposal day! Klee is gonna help with a proposal!”
“Yes, yes, you will,” Albedo picks out one of Klee’s red dresses from the drawers, laying it out on the bed for her. “Get changed quickly. We don’t want Sucrose to wait too long.”
Klee stumbles out of bed and the two of them carry on with their morning routine. The days where Albedo is able to stay at the Favonius Headquarters with Klee are still less frequent than he’d like them to be, but the routine they have comes with ease. Klee brushes her teeth, humming a song while Albedo tugs on his boots. He’s lucky that Klee is independent enough to get ready on her own.
Well, she’s mostly independent.
Albedo is in the adjoined bathroom, doing his best to brush his hair back when Klee waddles in, holding her own hairbrush and hair ties.
“Albedo, help me with my pigtails!”
He motions her to stand on her step stool, which Klee easily complies to. Albedo gently brushes the tangles from her hair. “Who does your hair when I’m not here?”
“Kaeya, usually! But sometimes Lisa, sometimes Master Jean! Oh, and Noelle! Amber’s done it a couple times, but she’s not very good at it…”
“That’s a lot of people, Klee,” Albedo replies. Truly, he is grateful that Klee is surrounded by so many people. “Who do you think does your hair the best? Kaeya?”
“Hmm….he’s pretty good at it! He can do lots of pretty hairstyles! But…Albedo is the best! No one can beat my brother!”
Albedo chuckles, tying Klee’s hair in two perfect pigtails. “Naturally. Does that look okay, Klee?”
She steps on her tip toes, looking over at the mirror. “Yay, it looks great! Thank you, Albedo! Now we’ll be able to go and impress Kaeya!”
Klee hops off her stool and runs out the bathroom, already heading towards the door. Albedo shakes his head in exasperation. At least Klee’s energy matches how he feels, the excitement trembling in his chest. He takes one last look at the mirror, running his hand through his own hair once more. Albedo then trails after Klee, grabbing his sketchbook on the way out.
“Mr. Albedo!” Sucrose is patiently waiting outside, near the sidewall of the Favonius Headquarters. She has a small bag with her, the same one she carries out with her in the field. “I was starting to wonder if I was too early. Oh, and hello, Klee!”
“Hi Sucrose!” Klee skips over, her arms already wrapped around Sucrose. The younger girl stumbles slightly before returning Klee’s hug.
“Sucrose, we’ve already talked about titles,” Albedo sighs. He cherishes Sucrose as an assistant and a friend, but he would like to think that they’ve known each other long enough to drop the titles. “Especially outside of the lab.”
“Sorry, sorry, I’ll do my best…” Sucrose averts her eyes, holding onto her bag tightly. “So, um, are you sure about this plan? I’m not sure the groundskeeper will appreciate it very much.”
The Knights of Favonius groundskeeper is a friendly old man, who Albedo already talked to the other day. “We have no opposition from the groundskeeper. In fact, he would appreciate the extra shade. The trees around here are small in size.”
“And Master Jean?”
Albedo steps forward, onto the patch of grass. He looks at the ground and then up at the building, trying to analyze the ideal location. Kaeya’s room was on the top floor and quite easy to spot, a small Dodoco left at the window sill as a gift from Klee. “Master Jean is…not in the building at the moment.”
Sucrose audibly gasps. “Albedo! Did you not talk to Master Jean about this?!”
Albedo had, in fact, forgotten about getting Jean’s permission. It tends to happen in projects he’s passionate about. If it’s not written down as part of his plan, Albedo tends to gloss over it completely.
This does explain why Lisa looked so amused when he wrote down and listed out what exactly he was going to say to the groundskeeper.
In his defense, Albedo has to argue that he doesn’t associate Jean with the outdoors. Her office is also on the other side of the building. There’s a chance she might never notice the extra addition to the foliage outside.
Sucrose still looks disappointed though. Oops. At least Sucrose dropped the formalities for once?
“It’s okay, Sucrose!” Klee says. “I do things all the time without asking Master Jean! And I only get in trouble sometimes!”
“That’s not…very reassuring?” Sucrose’s voice is starting to get more high-pitched and anxious.
“I promise that if anyone gets a scolding, it will be me,” He backs up slightly, and looks up at Kaeya’s window. This should work. Albedo nods, and turns towards Sucrose. “May I see the seed now?”
Though she still looks unsure, Sucrose obeys and takes out a vial from her bag. A small acorn is inside it. She hands it over and then takes out her trowel, well-used but sturdy as always. “I hope this is enough.”
“It’s perfect. Thank you, Sucrose.”
Albedo directs her to where she should dig a small hole and the two of them manage to plant the seed in a swift manner. Sucrose pats the soil before taking out another vial, this one filled with a strange green liquid.
“Ooo, what’s that?” Klee asks. She stands at the side, watching the two of them work.
“Oh, it’s a special formula I’ve made for my garden,” Sucrose replies with a hint of pride. “It helps plants grow at an accelerated rate. It keeps them healthy too.”
She carefully pours the liquid onto the spot where they planted the seed. Klee gasps when a tiny seedling pokes out of the soil.
“Woah! That was super fast!”
“And with alchemy, we can speed the process even more,” Albedo picks up his sketchbook and a piece of chalk.
It’s not often he modifies something already living, but it’s important to Albedo that the tree he gives is one that’s long lasting. While he’s confident in his control of Khemia, plant life is more of Sucrose’s speciality anyway. With her assistance, Albedo is more sure that the tree will provide shade for years to come.
Drawing the tree is also an easy step. He sketches long, delicate lines that create the strong base of the tree. He makes sure the branches are drawn in a way that they won’t disrupt the walls of the Headquarters.
As an added touch, he adds the intricate swirls onto the leaves.
With one last stroke, the tree begins to grow, reaching towards the sky. In seconds, a fully grown oak tree stands, vibrant green leaves fluttering in the wind. It’s a magnificent tree.
And it’s also the perfect height for reaching Kaeya’s window.
This part is probably the part Albedo was looking forward to the least. Even when he is required to go out into the field at times, he was never the most athletic. But as always, there’s nothing Albedo won’t do for Kaeya’s sake.
“Albedo, that tree is so big and so cool!” Klee jumps up, as if she could reach one of the branches herself.
Sucrose has a similar look of amazement on her face, her eyes bright. “It really is beautiful.”
“It’s time for my job, right, right?”
Albedo nods. “Yes. You and Sucrose, please keep a look out for ah…suspicious figures.” Really, there should be no suspicious figures, especially this early. He just means Jean. Who won’t walk over to this side of the building. Probably.
Klee gives a salute, the same way any knight is taught to do. Sucrose, flustered, copies her.
“Well, let’s get right to it,” Albedo stretches his arms and summons a Solar Isatoma, stepping on it to give him a boost. Unfortunately, even his Solar Isatomas have a limit to their height, and he’s only able to get himself up to around half-way.
And now for the inevitable climbs. Albedo sighs and jumps off his Solar Isatoma, latching onto the tree. The actual climbing isn’t too difficult, though he finds himself feeling like a cat. Klee is shouting out words of encouragement, though he’s too busy focusing to look down at her. His hands are doing their best to grasp on any kind of ledging and by the time he reaches Kaeya’s window, his legs are beginning to feel numb.
At least there’s a branch that gives him easy access to the window. He stretches over, managing to inch onto the branch like some sort of earthworm.
It’s not. Effective. But it works.
That is, until Albedo realizes that the branch only gives a perfect view of Kaeya’s window. He’s very much horizontal and not able to reach over to the window without letting go of the branch.
Albedo tries to stretch over anyway. He didn’t come this far just to lay there.
And then he slips.
Albedo grunts as he ends up upside down, hanging by his legs. Sucrose yells out something from below, the words inaudible.
He considers the merits of creating a piece of gravel with his vision when the window opens, revealing a flabbergasted Kaeya.
“Albedo?!” Kaeya is half dressed, his hair in a messy ponytail. His shirt has the top buttons undone, leaving a full view of his chest. Albedo would appreciate it more if he wasn’t upside down. “What are you doing?! I didn’t think this is what you meant from a proposal-”
“Ah, Kaeya,” Albedo clears his throat. “I have come to perform the Mondstadtian tradition of gifting flowers and poetry to one’s beloved.”
Kaeya blinks. He’s starting to look more distressed by the minute, his hair already coming loose. “Albedo, a tree is not a flower.”
“It may not be, but I do believe it is a strong representation of our relationship,” Albedo explains. “Flowers die easily after being picked, no? And I personally think I’ve gifted you enough Calla Lilies to last a lifetime. But a tree lives for a long time. We also have something to remember our relationship by, and others are able to enjoy it too. Every time you look out your window, or I see this tree outside, we’ll be reminded of each other.”
Kaeya falls silent at this.
“And now, the poem.” Albedo would have brought up his sketchbook and the page he wrote the poem on, but it would be impractical to do that from this angle. And so, he proceeds to recite it by memory:
“Kaeya, your eyes are frosty
a frosty love
that gives me chills all over
won’t you take a ride with me
on a big ruin guard
and we’ll go
all over
Teyvat”
Something about the poem seems off. Albedo is not entirely sure that was the right poem. Poem writing isn’t his strong suit, but was that really the one he was going to share?
Hmm…now that he thinks about it, he’s starting to get a bit light headed.
Kaeya, on the other hand, starts to laugh. He’s gripping the sides of his window, laughing so hard it looks like he might be tearing up. “Y-you...I can’t believe you…”
Kaeya can’t even get to the next sentence before he starts laughing again.
As much as Albedo enjoys hearing Kaeya laugh, this was not supposed to be the right reaction. “Is something wrong with my poem? Admittingly, I might have said the wrong one…”
“No, no, it’s just…” Kaeya catches his breath. “Stick to alchemy, alright? I’ll write the poems next time.”
“Are you saying my poem is bad?”
“It’s not! But you did all that and the actual poem is…” Kaeya dissolves into laughter again.
Albedo is pretty sure he’s never seen Kaeya laugh this hard in his life. Seeing Kaeya let go like this is a rarity, especially when the other man is keen on keeping a mask on at all times of the day.
But this Kaeya, the one who can’t stop laughing, is the real one.
Albedo decides that he would like it if Kaeya laughs like this for the rest of their lives.
“I love you,” Albedo says, the words coming out unbidden.
And Kaeya, beautiful Kaeya, stops his laughing fit to look at Albedo, his eye glistening with mirth. “My dearest, I love you too.”
Kaeya reaches out, trying to take a hold of Albedo’s hands. “Now, let’s get you out of that tree, shall we?”
It takes a couple moments, but Albedo is able to twist himself enough to get a hold of Kaeya’s hands. The other is then able to help get a grasp on the window sill, and Albedo is able to lift himself up onto the ledge.
He sits there for a second, panting for a breath of air. “That’s…enough of a workout for the day, I think.”
“Didn’t know you were that flexible, Chief Alchemist,” Kaeya grins. “Though, you might want to look out the window.”
“Hm?” Albedo looks down.
There’s Klee, shouting at the top of her lungs and cheering. There’s Sucrose, who looks nervous as ever but has a soft smile on her face.
Then there’s Master Jean herself, in full uniform. Her eyes are squinting as she looks up. A mug of coffee is in one of her hands, the same mug he gifted to her on her last birthday. She’s awake, but barely so.
“Albedo?” Jean calls out. “What is going on here? Where did this tree come from?”
Ah, it turns out Jean would notice a new tree on the property after all.

Chapter Text
“Albedo, I have a suggestion if you’re set on reviving old traditions.” It’s late at night when Lisa pushes a book over. This particular book was browning at the edges, yet still carried an elegant typography. “The Ragnvindr Clan, in ancient times, had its own courtship rules.”
“The Ragnvindr Clan?” Albedo’s attention piqued. He never thought to think of the Ragnvindr’s own traditions.
And yet, it made the perfect sense to include. Kaeya loves his family and though his relationship with Diluc was still strained at times, the two are very much still important to one another.
“It’s very traditional. You know how nobles are,” Lisa said. “It includes asking the Head of House for the intended hand in marriage. The Head would then choose to approve this match, often through a contract. The Head can also verify the match in numerous ways. It’s usually through financial assets. But…there are more exciting ways.”
Lisa points at a particular paragraph. Albedo reads through it, his eyebrows raising.
“It’s like a tale of legends,” Lisa giggles. “A knight fighting for the younger son’s hand. Kaeya may find it fun, wouldn’t he?”
After Albedo’s tree stunt, Jean had assigned him a packet. A rather long packet that was supposedly about landscaping laws. Truthfully, Albedo spaced out halfway through it, only managing to squirrel out of it by promising Jean that he’ll create a bench underneath the tree.
“So everyone can enjoy it,” Albedo explained. “And ah, it would make it a proper public space.”
This was approved and now, Albedo can work on the next part of his proposal plan. The next part is arguably the most important one, as it determines the success of the last step.
It is also, Albedo thinks, the most difficult one.
To ensure his plan’s success, Albedo double-checks Diluc’s shift schedule for the week from peeking at Kaeya’s desk.
(Kaeya can insist that he isn’t worried about Diluc at all, but Albedo knows he keeps the most important things on written notes. They share that aspect, the need to make information as physical as possible. While Kaeya’s memory is sharp, the written note only serves as a reminder that he can’t forget this particular piece of info.)
He then heads over to Angel’s Share an hour before the night shift, when he knows Diluc is preparing for the evening’s events. Albedo opens the door, stepping inside the warm tavern.
“We’re still closed. Come back later,” Diluc has his back turned as he takes inventory of his stock. Occasionally, he writes down notes on a small notepad. An extra pencil is behind his ear, a detail that looks out of place next to Diluc’s sleek bartending outfit.
“Well, I’m not here for a drink,” Albedo says, taking a seat at the bar.
Diluc turns around almost instantly. He looks at Albedo with a raised eyebrow. “Huh, not often do we get the Chief Alchemist here. Do you have any new research to share?”
Albedo shakes his head. “Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to carry on research lately. But I do want to talk to you about something.”
“On with it then,” Diluc sets his notepad down and crosses his arms. “It must be important if you’ve come to the tavern.”
Albedo’s relationship with Diluc is a strange one. He would like to call them friends, though they don’t really act like they are. When they meet, it’s to talk about Albedo’s research on strange ley lines and Diluc will relay information from his own adventures. On the rare occasion their meetups aren’t work-based, the two of them tend to just sit there in silence while they work on separate hobbies.
They could have talked about Kaeya during those times. They haven’t though. It was as if the two of them agreed to never bring him up.
Sometimes, when Kaeya stares too long at his seashell collection, Albedo will feel an irrational anger towards Diluc. But logically, the strain in the brothers’ relationship is somehow both and neither of their faults.
Kaeya has never come up in their years of acquaintance. Even when Albedo started dating Kaeya, Diluc had no comment other than a solid nod in his direction.
But now, it was necessary to break that understood promise.
“I’m going to marry your brother,” Albedo says.
Silence.
Diluc’s jaw drops. It’s almost amusing to see just how much Diluc’s expressions mirror Kaeya’s.
He’s also blinking so wildly Albedo is starting to wonder if he’s going to start crying. Albedo shifts in his seat. What was he supposed to do if the Diluc Ragnvindr just started crying?
Luckily, Diluc gets a handle on himself. He adjusts his gloves and coughs. “I…congratulations. Thank you for telling me.”
Diluc’s limbs are all stiff now, his back straight. He moves to fiddle his gloves once more. With each motion, Albedo is starting to feel a pang of anxiety. Albedo almost feels bad when he has to say the next sentence.
“And I’d like to duel you for Kaeya’s hand in marriage.”
“...Pardon?” Diluc’s eyes widen, as if he’s an owl perched on a roof. “Did you say…duel?”
Albedo nods in affirmation.
“Albedo, that’s…” Diluc pauses. “Very unnecessary. I know noble families in ancient history dueled, but that’s not needed now. You don’t even need my permission to marry Kaeya. He can do whatever he wants.”
The pushback is something Albedo expected. Even he’s aware of how ridiculous the preposition is.
Except when Lisa brought it up, Albedo had to admit the idea did sound fun. It may be Kaeya’s influence, which should be a warning sign in itself, but a part of Albedo wants to prove his love for Kaeya in a more outward manner. Then there’s the fairy tales he reads to Klee, describing knights who would do anything for their beloved.
It’s also the only Ragnivindr tradition he could find, one exclusive to the noble clan. And isn’t that the point of it all, to involve Kaeya with his family traditions?
(A part of him may also still be angry at Diluc for everything he has and hasn’t done to Kaeya. Albedo isn’t immune to the human emotion of sheer pettiness.)
He’s just not sure how to tell this to Diluc out of all people.
“It’s…important to Kaeya,” Albedo settles on saying. “I know it’s unorthodox, but I want Kaeya to experience the traditions of all the cultures he’s grown up with. That includes familial ones.”
Diluc thinks for a couple of seconds before breathing out slowly. “Fine. I’ll agree. Just give me the time and place and we’ll get it over with.”
A wave of relief washes over Albedo. “Thank you. I promise it won’t be too bad of an experience.”
“I do hope the Chief Alchemist can at least prove how much of a knight he is,” Diluc replies. If Albedo looks closely, he can see the tiniest hint of a smile. “Even if you’re marrying Kaeya, I won’t go easy on you.”
“I am perfectly able to hold myself in a fight,” Albedo can ignore how Diluc is way more of a fighter than he will ever be. He’s not much of a competitive person, but in this case, Albedo is willing to stand his ground. “And before I forget, I do have another favor to ask of you.”
The actual day of the duel was decided to be on the weekend, in one of the open fields near Dawn Winery. In days long past, the field was often used for the Knights’ training camps and there were even a handful of benches for people to sit and observe from. It’s a sunny day, the perfect weather for a fight.
Albedo swings the wooden practice sword he was given a few times. It’s lighter than his preferred sword, but it will have to do. A part of him wonders if he should go through the drills all the knights are required to learn. He hasn’t done them since then, but surely they’re still in his memories.
He pauses his swinging, to look at the side. A number of onlookers were invited to partake in the event, only because dueling traditionally called for an audience.
However, it’s a…surprisingly large group of people.
Outside of Dawn Winery’s staff, there’s a number of familiar faces in the crowd. There’s Jean, the officiator of today’s duel. She looks torn between being bewildered and acting like the professional she is. Lisa stands next to her, holding a lace trimmed parasol above both of their heads. The two of them are talking in hushed whispers. Albedo manages to catch Lisa’s eye and she throws a wink his way.
There’s also Amber talking excitedly with Sucrose and Eula. In the back is Mona, who is debating with some of the kids from the Adventurer’s Guild on what seems to be the results of their match.
Venti is even there to provide what he claims to be battle music. He invited an older man from Liyue. If Albedo listens closely, he can hear Venti trying to convince the guest to partake in a bet with him.
And naturally, there’s Kaeya, who’s taken a seat in the front of the crowd. He looks vaguely confused, considering Albedo made it a point to keep the day’s events a surprise to him. Klee is sitting in Kaeya’s lap, holding a sign that says “Go Albedo!” in bright, red crayon.
Who even invited all these people? Albedo knows the gossip mill in Headquarters can be ridiculous at times, but to this extent?
“Chief Alchemist, are you ready?” The crowd hushes as Diluc steps onto the field. He’s considerably dressed down in more casual training clothes with his hair tied in a high ponytail. In his hands is a wooden claymore.
Albedo takes his place on the field as well. “Naturally.”
This is Jean’s cue to take her place as officiator. She stands up and clears her throat. “Greetings, everyone. Today we will witness a formal duel between the Knights of Favonious’ own Chief Alchemist, Albedo, and the heir of the Ragnvindr estate, Master Diluc. May the challenger state his terms.”
“Diluc Ragnvindr,” Albedo starts. The speech itself is one he rehearsed many times to Klee, “I challenge you to a duel for the youngest Ragnivindr heir’s hand in marriage.”
This causes a stir in the crowd. Up to this point, Albedo has kept his plans for marriage limited to a small circle of associates. He’s accepted that by doing this, all of Mondstadt will know about their plans of engagement.
It’s thrilling. Exhilarating for this to be public knowledge.
“I accept this duel as head of the Ragnvindr Household,” Diluc draws his claymore and shifts to a battle ready stance. “One round is all that’s needed.”
Jean lists out the basic rules they must follow, including the limited usage of visions. Albedo shifts his focus towards Diluc. He knows Diluc is a fierce fighter, with aggressive strikes and a speed that almost seems unnatural at times. Albedo is more of a textbook fighter, his swordsmanship proper. It’s highly effective against mindless monsters, yet Albedo has a feeling that won’t cut it for someone as skilled as Diluc. Abandoning etiquette may be beneficial here.
Jean starts her countdown and Albedo draws his own sword. He glances to the side. Klee is standing on the bench now, waving her sign around.
Kaeya looks oddly pale. Hm, maybe Albedo should’ve actually spoiled the surprise.
“This is for you, Kaeya,” Albedo mumbles under his breath.
“3..2…1…and go!”
Albedo jumps forward, sword raised and ready to strike Diluc. Diluc may be taller and stronger, but Albedo manages to get within range faster. He gets ready to swing his sword forward and
And.
Albedo’s foot catches on a pebble and he trips forward, landing on his face. Miraculously, his sword is still in his hand.
The crowd gasps. Klee is shouting for Albedo to get up.
“Uh, are you…okay?” That’s Diluc’s voice asking.
Albedo groans and rolls over. Diluc is leaning down, his eyes widening in concern. He has one hand out, offering Albedo some help.
That wasn’t planned. Albedo wonders the benefits of just turning into a pebble. He could join his rock brethren underneath him. It’s fine. Maybe that’s why he was given a Geo vision.
“Albedo, you gotta get up!” Klee is practically screeching from the sidelines. “You have to win and beat up the weird red grown-up!”
“Albedo, you can do this!”
Kaeya’s voice. Albedo looks over to see Kaeya standing up, shouting with Klee.
“You can win against Diluc! He’s nothing compared to you! He’s just a huge lump of meat!”
Diluc, to his credit, only looks mildly annoyed as Kaeya and Klee throw a variety of teasing his way.
“He’s a weirdo!”
“Literally what kind of winemaker doesn’t even drink wine!”
“He’s too tall, I don’t like it when people are too tall!”
“When he was twelve, he used to be afraid of-”
“Oh, will you shut up!” Diluc yells at Kaeya. He’s no longer looking at Albedo, and instead, looks like he’s seconds away from stomping over to his brother.
But Klee and Kaeya are right, aren’t they? Albedo didn’t come here to lay down on the ground and stare at Diluc.
So he grabs Diluc’s hand and tugs him downward. Diluc squawks as he falls over, taken so off guard he drops his claymore. Albedo uses this moment to get himself up, and before Diluc can move, he steps on Diluc’s chest with the heel of his boot.
Albedo points his sword toward Diluc’s throat.
“Yield.”
The silence at this moment is so thick Albedo could cut it with his sword. Diluc is breathing heavily and it’s clear he’s still trying to register what exactly happened to him.
Once he fully processes it, Diluc closes his eyes.
“I concede.”
The crowd cheers, though there seems to be some disappointed groans and confused muttering. Venti and Mona seem the most disappointed, the two of them yelling about whether or not that actually counts. Regardless, Klee and Kaeya are cheering the loudest. Kaeya even picks up Klee and twirls her around, the younger girl screaming in delight.
Albedo offers Diluc a hand. He takes it.
“That’s a dirty trick, Albedo,” Diluc sighs, brushing the dirt off his clothes. “I never expected something like that from you.”
“I have my own set of surprises,” Albedo says. “Besides, it’s a move Kaeya would be proud of.”
“Ugh, he loves moves like that. I don’t think he’s had an honorable fight in his life,” Diluc shakes his head in exasperation. “Before I forget, here’s the favor you asked about.”
He reaches into his pocket and pulls a small velvet box. Albedo takes it in his hands and opens it.
A silver ring sits there, a sapphire embedded in the center. The ring itself has engravings much like the wings of a bird.
“It was my father’s ring for my mother,” Diluc says. He puts his hands in his pockets. “I highly doubt I’ll have any use of it, and Father would’ve loved for Kaeya to have it.”
“Thank you, Diluc,” Albedo smiles, hiding the box in his own coat. “It really does mean a lot.”
“Hey, looks like Master Diluc isn’t a sore loser for once!” Kaeya walks over, his hand holding Klee’s. He’s grinning widely. “Isn’t it fun to lose sometimes?”
Diluc rolls his eyes. “Clearly, we’ll need a rematch. I was going easy on Albedo.”
“If I recall,” Albedo interrupts. “You said you wouldn’t.”
“Yeah, it just means Albedo is better than you!” Klee looks immensely proud. “He’s the cooler older brother! Though…”
She pauses, putting a finger to her chin.
“If Albedo and Kaeya are getting married, Master Diluc would be my brother too, right?”
Kaeya laughs. “That’s right, Klee. You better show Diluc what it's like having a sister.”
Klee gasps and she immediately latches onto Diluc, any playful animosity she’s had towards him evaporating. She chatters about fishes and grape juice at a speed that leaves Diluc looking lost.
“Looks like the two of them are getting along,” Kaeya watches the two for a moment before turning back towards Albedo. “Now, let’s talk about you. What on earth was that about? You didn’t have to duel for my honor, you know. I’m not a defenseless maiden.”
“Of course you’re not. I just…” The box in Albedo’s pocket suddenly feels a lot more heavy. “Well, I thought it would be a little fun.”
“I can’t argue with that,” Kaeya tucks a stray piece of Albedo’s hair back to its proper place. He shivers. “Still, you should stop doing things that make me worried. First you get in a tree and now you fight Diluc? Please tell me the next thing is, well, normal.”
“It’s a lot more tame, yes,” Albedo lets Kaeya wrap his arms around him. It’s nice to be able to relax again. “I hope you’re looking forward to it.”
“Couldn’t miss it for the world, my dearest.”
Notes:
tbh this one has less kaebedo and more silly diluc moments, but hey, i do think there's a lot of potential in a diluc and albedo friendship!
(also i like had to completely rewrite this chapter after the 2.8 diluc event dropped oops-)
Chapter Text
As much as Albedo appreciates Lisa’s help, even she couldn’t help Albedo with this particular part. He’s already looked through the books themselves for anything mentioning Khaenri'ah and nothing worthwhile has come up.
For a moment, he thought about asking Lisa for help on this. Sometimes, her eyes look a little bit too knowing and if anyone else figured out Kaeya and Albedo’s secret, it would be her.
Except, it’s not just his secret to share, now is it?
So he thanks Lisa for her time and heads back to his office, organizing the books and notes that he’s gathered throughout the week. Is there anyone he can ask about Khaenri'ah? There’s his Master, naturally, but he’s abandoned trying to write her letters a long time ago.
The Traveler, in all their wanderings, could be an option. The only problem is that the Traveler is also looking for information about Khaenri'ah, and if they can only get the bare minimum, there’s no chance of them finding anything culturally relevant.
Albedo sighs and stares down at his desk. The thing is a mess, with papers from his research and his notes scattered everywhere. Maybe if he cleans it up, something will come to mind.
He gathers a few documents together, an envelope accidentally slipping out. He picks it up, spotting Klee’s handwriting. “Mama!” is written on the front.
Ah, that’s right. He’s been meaning to mail a letter for Klee. Mailing his Aunt Alice is always a tedious process, mostly because normal methods of mail usually don’t work.
He pauses.
On a spare piece of paper, he begins to draft a letter.
Dear Albedo,
I do wish you wrote to me more often. What do you mean you’re getting married? You must tell me all the details immediately! You’ve grown up so fast. I can’t believe you’ve found a loving partner. Kaeya suits you well. Why, I remember when you first came to Mondstadt and the poor boy couldn’t keep his eyes off you.
Hmm? You’ve never heard that story before? I imagine it’s more fun from his point of view. Do ask him sometime.
As regards to your request, I admit my information may be a bit limited. I could send you journals of my travels. I won’t though! You may be annoyed at me for this, but you already have everything you need.
Albedo, you have a lot of precious memories of your own. Why don’t you share them with Kaeya? They might be more useful to your mission than you think it is.
I will also point out that, if you want a Mondstadtian proposal, you completely forgot music! And food! Wine is also a must. Klee can help you with those things! You know how she loves to be creative.
Oh, she can’t help with the wine, of course. Please only give her grape juice.
Just remember, keeping a culture alive is more than just reading books. It’s about experiences.
Love,
Alice
Aunt Alice’s letter was not the most helpful at first. Albedo pondered over it for a couple of days before he realized what exactly she was implying.
Albedo’s memories of his time before Mondstadt didn’t feel like they were anything significant. He learned alchemy during those times and was nothing more than a wanderer with his Master.
Except, there were also moments in between their travels. Moments where his Master would gather herbs together and hum songs from long ago. Here, Albedo felt less like a homunculus and more like…a regular person. Like they had a connection beyond Master and Creation.
They were rare moments in the years they spent together. Rare, but cherished all the same.
“It’s about experiences.”
“Aunt Alice, if you’re saying what I think you are saying…” Albedo sighs, folding up the letter. “I’m really not much of a chef or musician.”
“Albedo, what kind of spice is this?” Klee is standing on her toes, reaching for one of the vials. “It smells sweet!”
“Do you remember Xingqiu? I asked him to send me some. He’s friends with a well-known chef,” Albedo is lucky Xingqiu is a fast replier. He had asked for a sample of spices, especially those with sweet and sour flavors. Apparently, Xingqiu’s friend is a cooking genius and immediately knows what can create those flavors. The package even contained coconuts, which Albedo isn’t entirely sure what to do with. “That’s for a later date though. Right now, we’re working with something more simple.”
“So what are we making?”
“Bread. A sweet bread, actually.” Albedo doesn’t remember too much about the food he had with his master. There’s vague ideas of stews and seafood dishes in his mind, though he wouldn’t remember enough to create a substantial dish.
The strongest memories he has, however, are mostly sweets. The sweets were his favorite thing to share with his Master, mostly because she noticed how fond Albedo was of them.
One of his favorite sweets was a fluffy, soft bread, like the ones they tried in Inazuma. However, its most distinct feature was that it was served with cheese and sugar.
With the ingredients required, Albedo rarely had it. The taste lingers all the same.
“I’m gonna make pastries with Albedo!” Klee giggles. “Tell me what to do, tell me what to do!”
Albedo guides Klee through the process, using a modified sweet bread recipe from Inazuma. She measures out the ingredients while he mixes everything together. Albedo doesn’t bake too much, though the process reminds him of his alchemy projects.
Klee is also getting a good arithmetic lesson. Lisa will be pleased to know that Klee is nailing her fractions.
“The dough is super super sticky,” Klee comments while they roll out the dough. “I’ve made bread with Noelle before, but it didn’t look like this! Why’s it so different?”
“You wouldn’t say Mondstadt bread is like Liyue or Inazuma’s bread, would you?” Albedo replies. “Each place has something unique to offer.”
“Oh, I think I get it. Where’s this bread from then?”
“Hmm…would you believe me if I said it’s from Dodocoland? The bread will be fluffy like Dodocos are.”
Klee is amazed by this revelation and she cuts the dough with a bounce in her step. In no time at all, the bread is ready to be baked.
When it’s all done, Albedo helps Klee sprinkle cheese and sugar all over the top. This is the moment Kaeya pokes his head into the kitchen.
“Oh my, my two favorite people are at work. What are you baking?”
“Hi, Kaeya! We’re making Cheesy Dodoco Bread!” She holds up a piece of bread that Albedo helped her shape into Dodoco. “It’s sweet and fluffy, like Dodoco!”
“That sounds amazing,” Kaeya steps into the kitchen. He stops when he realizes what exactly the two of them baked. “Wait, is that-?”
“Yes, though it’s modified from an Inazuma recipe,” Albedo kisses Kaeya’s cheek in greeting, which Klee has a lot of comments about. “I don’t think it’s the same, but it at least looks the part.”
“Albedo, I never thought I would have this again,” Kaeya picks up a piece of bread and eats it, his expression thoughtful. “You’re right, it’s not quite the same, but it’s still really good. Here, have some.”
He tears off a piece of bread and feeds it to Albedo. Klee also has comments on that too.
Albedo chews slowly. The bread, while soft, isn’t quite the same texture as the bread from his memories. But the melting cheese mixed with the sugar brings back old memories of Albedo huddled close to a fire.
“I’ll have to improve this recipe for next time,” Albedo sighs. “I hope it’s to your liking still.”
“Everything you do is to my liking, Albedo,” Kaeya suddenly leans forward. “Oh, it looks like you have some flour here.” He swipes Albedo’s cheek with his thumb, a motion that makes Albedo’s heart skip a beat.
“You two are being all gross!” Klee suddenly shoves a picnic basket between the two of them. “Albedo said you’re going to have a picnic after we finished, so here! Have your picnic now!”
“Well, what Klee says, Klee goes,” Kaeya says, his eye sparkling. “What’s this about a picnic?”
Albedo leads Kaeya on a walk to Starsnatch Cliff. It’s a peaceful walk, with very little interruptions from monsters. Only occasionally does Kaeya have to take out his sword and ward off a slime with a burst of Cryo.
“This would be much faster if I could take a horse,” Kaeya says when they’re halfway there. “Why didn’t you let me put a saddle on poor Winnie?”
Winnie is one of the few horses that was left behind by Grandmaster Varka, mostly because she’s an ancient thing with bad knees. Her age doesn’t stop Kaeya from brushing her mane daily. “You know as much as I do that she doesn’t like heights. You just want an excuse to ride a horse.”
“That’s true,” Kaeya says like he doesn’t complain about his lack of horses every time he’s outside. “Besides, it would be harder to do this on horseback.”
He slips his hand into Albedo’s, the movement so natural that Kaeya must have been born to do this.
They reach the peak around sunset, with the barest twinkle of the stars visible in the sky. Kaeya has picked a pair of Cecilias on the way up. He twirls the stems in his hands as Albedo lays down the quilt.
The picnic basket has everything they need. Klee had helped earlier, assembling sandwiches and fruit. She even had the foresight to throw in some of the sweet bread they baked.
There is even a bottle of wine. It was delivered to Albedo’s office in the morning, a note tied on it that said “Good Luck”.
Albedo starts to pour the glasses of wine while Kaeya sits down next to him, stretching his legs out.
“It truly is the perfect night for a glass of wine,” Kaeya sighs. “A Cecilia for a glass, my beloved?”
“A fair trade for a fair man,” Albedo hands him the glass, clinking it with his own.
They sit there for a while, enjoying each other’s company. Their conversation is about a variety of things, from Kaeya’s misadventures with the Treasure Hoarders to the ongoing rumors about Amber being seen with Sucrose. Here, Albedo realizes just how many people he’s met alongside Kaeya. Once, he thought relationships were pointless things, and now here he is, trying to preserve the best one he’s ever had.
“I still want to know what was your sudden inspiration for baking these,” Kaeya is using one hand to finish his pastry, the other is intertwined around Albedo’s. “Did your friends from Inazuma inspire you? You must invite them one of these days. I’ve always wanted to try sake.”
“My companions are more than just your alcohol supply, Kaeya. You’ll probably meet them when we actually have a wedding. Besides, I have one more present for you.”
“Oh?”
In the basket, Albedo has hidden away a Windsong Lyre. He takes it out, the strings glimmering in the starlight.
“I do think Klee is the better musician,” Albedo plucks a string. “She had a lot of pointers for me.”
“And what song will my dearest play?” Kaeya clasps his hands together, the perfect audience member.
“There’s multiple songs, actually. The first one is probably not one you’ve heard of. It’s one my Master used to sing. I did my best to recreate the melody.” Albedo counts off in his head and then begins to play.
The notes begin to form a delicate, somber melody. There are notes Albedo probably misses, but the song brings up memories of snow and fire. He then transitions to a more familiar tune, the lullaby that Kaeya hums to Klee. The song is softer, brushing off the edges of the last song.
Then the tempo gets faster. A traditional Mondstadt tune is played, one that’s often played by the many bards. The song ends on a cheery note, a lone staccato that echoes into the night.
Albedo lets out a breath and sets the lyre down.
“And that is the Mondstadt tradition of performing a song for one’s lover. Did you enjoy it?”
Kaeya claps, a proud look on his face. “Oh, Albedo. Of course I did. Thank you for sharing. You’re quite talented.”
“Ah, not that talented,” Albedo scratches the back of his neck. “I won’t be performing for our wedding anytime soon.”
“A wedding, huh?” Kaeya’s smile is bright, a star of its own. “Why Albedo, I still don’t have a ring. I have a tree, the sight of my older brother falling over, my favorite childhood bread, and even a song. I can’t wear any of those around my finger.”
“I suppose I should explain all of that.”
“And here I thought you just wanted to be an honorable knight. I do enjoy the gifts, as unorthodox as they are.”
Albedo brushes his hand against his pocket, feeling the outline of the ring box. “I wanted you to experience the traditions of all your homes.”
Kaeya’s smile softens. “Even the outdated ones?”
“Yes, even the outdated ones.” The stars are all visible in the sky now, painting a twinkling picture. “No Khaenri'ah tradition involves bread either. At least that we know of. We both know there’s not a lot of records. I might have the first proposal in all of Teyvat that includes all the things I’ve done. I do think at this point, we’re allowed to create whatever we want.”
“If you really wanted me to, I could shake down an Abyss Mage,” Kaeya’s voice is as light as ever. His eye is glistening like the stars above. “I do admit I like this better though. I don’t know if we can ever do the same things as my ancestors did. It’s not the best feeling, but all we can do is make something new. There’s no one else I rather create new memories with.”
“And I’d like to continue making new traditions with you,” Albedo’s hand starts to shake as he reaches into his pocket. He steadies it and then takes out the box, the ring shining brightly. “So please, Kaeya Alberich, will you marry me?”
The tears are running freely down Kaeya’s cheek. “Oh, Albedo, yes, I…that’s the Ragnvindr crest, isn’t it? How did you…?”
“I didn’t duel Diluc just for the fun of it. It was your father’s and now, it’s rightfully yours,” Albedo takes the ring out of its box. “May I see your hand?”
Kaeya holds up his hand. Albedo takes it, and pulls off the glove. Gently, he slips the ring onto Kaeya’s ring finger.
It’s perfect. Albedo brushes his lips against Kaeya’s hand. “It matches your eye color.”
“I’ll make sure I find a ring that matches yours,” Kaeya pulls Albedo closer to him. “I love you.
“I love you too,” Albedo moves forward for a kiss, suddenly greedy to show Kaeya just how much he loves him.
After all, there’s no one else but the stars and moon. They dull next to Kaeya, who will shine brighter than they ever will.
Albedo and Kaeya are able to announce their engagement the very next day. It changes little between them, though Kaeya seems more eager to find excuses to hold Albedo’s hand. There’s still plenty of work to do, both in their jobs and with actual wedding plans.
Which brings up the question.
Albedo looks up from his desk. Klee is on the floor. She's inspired by the recent events and has been doodling elaborate scenes involving him and Kaeya all morning.
“Klee?”
“Yes, Albedo?” Klee is too engrossed in her drawing to even look back at him.
“Is there any chance you know anything about weddings?”
Notes:
annnnd that's a wrap! i may go back at a later date to do some minor edits, but this is it!
thank you to fry for having beautiful art and thank you to the kaebedo mods for hosting the event!!
this event kicked me out of my writing slump and i'm glad i'm able to finish something for once haha
some random notes:
1) it's not noted anywhere, but neurodivergent headcanons are very important to me! i tend to lean towards adhd kaeya and autistic albedo hehe
2) we all know albedo is Literally older than kaeya, but i do think he's physically older than him too. my personal age order is lisa > albedo > diluc > jean > kaeya.
3) i dunno if i'll ever write a sequel to this story in particular, but if i do, i'd like the story to be in kaeya's pov? or alternating povs?! hmmm
anywayyy that's it!
thank you for reading and i hope you enjoyed it <3 i'd love to read any comments!and again, hit me up on twt @/dazzletine if you wanna talk about kaebedo or see me talk more about my writing process hehe
