I Sympathize

Summary:

Garnet and Jake talk about what Steven and Finn have had to go through, and how it sucks.

Chapter Text

The clang of Finn’s sword filled the air as it struck Steven’s shield. Though Finn moved fast, the Crystal Gem was more than used to blocking sword strikes. While the young ones trained, Garnet and Jake watched from afar.

“It’s nice to see Steven spending time with someone else his age,” Garnet commented.

“Yeah, same for Finn. Sure, we’ve got plenty of pals. BMO, Marceline, Princess Bubblegum,” Jake listed off, “But we don’t know many humans, for lotsa reasons. I get Steven’s half human, but that’s enough for Finn.”

As if to prove his point, Finn laughed, and spoke to Steven as he swung his sword.

“Not bad, Steven! You should come to Ooo sometime, if we can get you there. You’d fit right in as a hero! I can totally see you dungeon crawling.”

“Lots of my early missions with the Gems were just like going through dungeons! You could come to Beach City and meet my best friend Connie. Oh, and Pearl! They use swords, like you!”

“Sounds awesome!”

Garnet smiled. Nothing gave her more joy than seeing Steven happy. Jake looked satisfied, too.

“It’s great seeing Finn have some FUN. Stuff used to be all chill, but things keep getting super serious. Finn’s got it all handled, but…it sorta sucks what he’s gotta deal with. He’s just a kid,” Jake admitted.

“I know what you mean,” Garnet sympathized. “Steven’s been through so much. The problems he’s faced, the things he’s had to overcome…they’re nearly all a result of the Crystal Gems’ unfinished business. The war, his mother, the Diamonds, none of them should be his problem. The mistakes of the past have shaped Steven’s present. That’s not how things should be.”

“Yeah! Why’s all that junk people did years ago gotta bother my bro now? It’s messed up, man.”

Garnet looked at Jake, and smirked.

“You remind me of a friend of mine. Amethyst. She shapeshifts like you do,” Garnet noted. “You two also speak in a similar manner. I think you’d get along.”

“Ya think? Hey, I know who you remind me of! BMO!” Jake realized.

“BMO? Isn’t that Finn’s little game system?”

“Yeah! You’ve both got square heads.”

Garnet chuckled, wondering if similar head shape was enough to start a friendship with. As strange as this big crossover was, she was glad that Steven was making new friends. And she was glad she was making her own friends, too.

Chapter 2

Summary:

Little epilogue with the cutest character in Adventure Time.

Chapter Text

BMO hopped from Finn’s hands to Garnet’s head, and began bouncing around on her hair.

“Hahaha! It’s like a trampoline!” BMO giggled. Eventually the little robot stopped, and sat down. “Your hair is really comfortable, rock lady.”

Garnet took BMO off her head, and held him gently in her hands. BMO got a little nervous, since he couldn’t see her eyes under those shades she wore. Was she mad at him?

“BMO.”

“Yes?”

“You are my newest best friend.”

BMO gasped, smiled, and hugged Garnet’s fingers. Garnet’s glasses shone in approval. What could she say? She had a weakness for tiny things.
