Work Text:

“Mika? Are you awake?”

At your call, you can hear a muted groan coming only a few seconds after you spoke. It comes from what seems like piles and piles of blankets on top of the bed sitting pushed up against the wall. Though one quick look and you can easily tell that it’s just a body curled up underneath the sheets, trying to cling onto the rest of his sleep. That, or he’s desperately trying to avoid the streaks of bright sunlight, just streaming into his room from the window above.

And at this point, you’re not quite sure which one is the most plausible answer.

Still, you take his groan as a sign to leave your spot leaning against the door and invite yourself in. You already left the breakfast you brought over for him to enjoy on the table back in the other room. The only thing left for you to do now is to wake him up so he can enjoy it. After all…time is inching closer and closer to becoming the afternoon. And you’d really like it if he was able to eat sooner rather than later.

The lanyard around your neck jingles with each step you take. The sound of your house key brushing against the one for his house fills the room along with your soft steps as you make your way towards his bed Taking a quick glance around as you walk forward, you notice that his room is a little messier than you last remember it being. A sad smile crosses your face as you realize it’s likely the result of how hard he’s been pushing himself lately.

There are clothes tossed around the room. Candy wrappers filling the trash can with a few just missing the basket. Stacks of sheet music and lyrics cover every edge of his desk as if he was looking for something in a rush. His backpack is left opened and it leans in a way that makes it dangerously close to emptying out all his papers and notebooks and folders in a messy pile on the floor. And the jacket you remember him wearing yesterday sits in a little ball, right by your feet. But worst of all, you would have to say, would be his blinds. Opened all the way and invited in way more light than anyone would ever ask for while they’re trying to sleep. Something he must have forgotten to take care of overnight.

It’s a bit of a sad sight to see. You’ve known him for so long. Ever since the two of you were young, really. The ever-capable and super dependable Mika- despite the fact he likes to think otherwise. That’s why it serves as no surprise that he still does this to himself. Even so, it doesn't hurt any less watching him work so hard with barely any breaks or downtime to properly take care of himself. It’s just something you can’t get used to. You just can’t. But that’s why today is special. That’s why your sad smile is quickly brightening up and the pep in your step returns in a snap.

Because today is his first full day off is a long, long time. And you’re here to ensure that everything goes perfectly.

“Hey, Mika?” You call out to him again once you find that your feet have reached the edge of his bed. You keep your voice much quieter than before to not disturb him. In fact, it barely reaches a whisper as you look down at the pile that is ultimately the half-sleep idol boy you know and love. So far, there are no more signs of life. But you couldn’t blame him. He was exhausted when you called to check in on him late last night. You just wanted to ensure that he made it back to his place safely, and remind him that you’ll be stopping by in the morning- just like you are now. But he just sounded so  tired . So what’s the harm in letting him get a few more minutes of shut-eye in, right? “I’m going to close the blinds for you, alright? And then maybe later, I can bring some breakfast over to you. Does that sound good?”

A moment passes. And then another. And another. And another. And one more before you determine that you’re not going to get any response once more. But again, it’s okay. You weren’t expecting anything. And for now, you just wanted to focus on helping Mika recuperate from such a busy life. It’s his first day with no school or practice or events or engagements in such a long time. It'd be nice to see him kick his feet up and catch on some well-deserved rest. Plus you don’t really mind doting. Especially if it’s him…

In silence, you reach out for the window that sits just above his bed. You have to lean over his bed to reach it all while, and bracing most of your weight on one hand standing on your toes just to reach the tilt want. But once your fist closes around it, you make quick work of twisting it to the side. Right before your eyes, the spots of sunlight disappear as the blinds cover up the window, drawing up blocks of shadows across the bed that grow bigger and bigger and bigger. Until that’s all that remains. Now, he can sleep easily. Now he can enjoy peace.

Or at least, that’s what you  thought  he would do.

You didn’t even have time to process the feeling of a pale hand shooting up and clamping down on your wrist before it was too late. Because even when you  do register  that someone is now holding on to you, your attention is captured by another sensation. The feeling of it tugging on you.  Hard . So hard that you end up losing your balance with its strength added to its element of surprise. And faster than you blink, you find yourself falling down, down,  down  upon Mika’s comforter with a quiet grunt. Face to face with the boy himself.

...”

Silences pass between the two of you as your eyes meet his. And with your current position, you couldn’t exactly blame him for not knowing what to say. You laying directly across his torso that’s still trapped under the comforters probably wasn’t what he had in mind. And as much as you know you really shouldn’t give in to your desire you be close to him while he desperately needs his time off, you find yourself adjusting your position against your better judgment. In your head, you’re grumbling to yourself about how you should have been spending this time at least helping him organize his desk or cleaning those dishes he must have left in the sink from last night. But your body is propping itself on its hands and knees, positioning yourself to be right next to him, before flopping down.

“Oof.” Out of habit, the soft noise leaves your lips in response to the impact of you suddenly lying down on your side. Beside you, Mika lets out a similar noise as his head peaks up from the top of the comforter. It’s then that you both make eye contact again, though a second goes by in complete since. But it’s quickly interrupted by the sound of the two of you breaking out in soft laughter at such a simple, stupid moment. And for a second there, you could have been convinced that you both weren’t in high school. That Mika wasn’t working as an idol and that you weren’t grasping onto your own dreams each day. For a second you could have been convinced that the two of you were still kids. “I’m sorry about that…”

It’s all that you whisper as you continue looking over at Mika. A pair of aqua blue and golden eyes star back of you, still lined with exhaustion despite the easy-going smile on his face. His hair looks a mess from being underneath the covers and laid across the pillows all night. And while his skin still looks a bit paler than usually does, and his frame is not what it used to be, you can easily tell that it’s still your Mika underneath it all. Your stressed, overworked, and absolutely deserving of sleeping past eleven o’clock in the morning Mika.

“It’s okay. I’m the one who pulled you down here.” He responds softly. His voice sounds low and a little husky. Evident that he had only woken up moments ago. That, on top of the way he’s blinking at you so slowly, tells you that you won’t have him for long. Now with it nice and dark and peaceful in his room, it’ll be easy for him to get more sleep as much sleep as he wanted. You’re sure of it. “But really…”

As he trails off, he starts to lean closer to you. Your eyes can’t help but widen, but you follow along quickly. Moving in closer, closer, and closer until finally…he’s resting his forehead against yours. It’s an intimate position to be in. A position that makes you so aware of all that you’re feeling. All that surrounds you. Mika’s comfortable beneath your body. Mika’s bangs brushing against your skin. And finally, Mika’s breath. Fanning against your lips as it slows and slows and slows. Just like his eyes that continue to blink close, and close, and finally?

“But really…I’m just glad you’re here…”

Closed.
