Work Text:

ever since you took the night shift at your local konbini, silence seems to have become your best friend. the fluorescent lights glare harshly against the plastic-wrapped packages of ramen and artificially flavoured drinks- it’s eerie, the quiet.

breathing out a quiet sigh, you reached under the desk and grabbed your bag- rattling the contents around as you searched for the bottle of aloe vera juice you’d bought earlier. maybe the sugar would get you through the rest of the mind-numbingly boring shift.

“fuck, where did i put it?” you muttered.

engrossed in your search or the drink at large, you didn’t notice the door open; at least, not until the ‘ding!’ of the bell rung out. in a show of true professionalism, you proceeded to slam your head onto the underside of the till. biting back a colourful string of curses, you plastered a smile onto your face.

“welcome to sakanoshita convenience! how can i help you?” the sugary scripted sentence made you die a little bit on the inside every time you had to say it- but Ukai had insisted, muttering something about pretty words and faces mean happier customers.

the stranger shot you a grin- and fuck, if it wasn’t one of the prettiest smiles you’d ever seen. “hi. do you guys sell rolling papers?” his voice was as attractive as he was. he had piercings everywhere- was that a glint of silver you saw on his tongue? you weren’t quite sure how long you’d spent gaping at the man in front of you before he’d tilted his head to the side with a sly “you’re staring, darling. might i advise closing your jaw?”

“shit. yeah hi sorry-“ crouching down behind the till, you retrieved the papers in question. “are you cool with.. raw?” you asked, squinting at the packaging.

“yeah, i love it raw.” the man replied, raising an eyebrow. he seemed to find something humorous, although you couldn’t quite grasp what.. oh.

“you think you’re funny.” you glared at him, moving to ring up the offending papers.

“i think, therefore i am.”

you ignored him. “your total is 16.89. damn, that’s a lot for little sheets of paper.”

he handed you a twenty. “you want to join me?”

“join you?”

“yeah. for a smoke. getting high alone isn’t as fun as it is with a friend.”

“i don’t even know your name. we aren’t friends.”

“suna rintarou- call me rin. and you’re… [First].” he replied, glancing at the tacky name tag you had pinned on your uniform. “now we’re friends. smoke with me?” every part of your brain screamed ‘bad idea’. and yet, you couldn’t deny the pull you felt towards suna. there was just something about him that you couldn’t get enough of- curiosity might have killed the cat, but at least the cat died knowing.

you shifted your feet on the scuffed linoleum. “i’m supposed to be working..”

“it’s 2:30 in the morning. no one goes to a konbini at two fucking thirty.”

“are you no one, then?”

“not the point.” he glided over to the exit. how could someone possibly walk so gracefully with boots as heavy as his? you doubted you could even walk in them- god really does have favourites.

he turned and tilted his head back to look at you, a cocky smirk on his stupidly attractive face.

“you coming?”
