Warmth

Summary:

It’s an early, sleepless morning for Deimos, but Sanford is here to remedy that restlessness.

Notes:

I have like 6. Madness combat fic drafts right now. And this was just the one I decided to finish oh my god I apologize if it’s not that good, I’ve been really struggling to make anything creatively. I just got a new job and that does take a big chunk out of my days now, but I still desire to write and draw, it’s just hard.

However, I hope you enjoy nonetheless. I haven’t written just sanmos since my… first madness fic. And that got a startling amount of attention. And I think I’ve improved a lot since then, so I hope you like this shorter oneshot.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Deimos often spent the early mornings smoking.

He would tiredly put the cigarette between his lips, struggling for a moment to get a spark, but the flame would light up in his face. The smoke would rise off the end, and he’d shake out the blaze from his hand, taking it between his fingers and exhaling his first drag. It was particularly early this morning, still dark outside. Barely any light in the room as is.

He put it back to his lips, sighing softly in content. Smoking filled him with this warmth he couldn’t explain. It was relaxing. He felt a hand slide up the bare part of his thigh, squeezing gently. He looked down next to him, Sanford still half asleep under the sheets.

“Hey,” He said groggily, blinking the sleep out of his eyes as he struggled to focus on the smaller man beside him. “Up already?”

“Couldn’t sleep. I didn’t mean to wake you.” Deimos murmured, exhaling more smoke, and coughing slightly. “‘Scuse me.”

“Take it easy.” Sanford moved to sit up next to him, his arm sliding around his waist, drifting across his stomach to rest his hand on his hip.

“Hey, you don’t have to get up with me… you can go back to sleep.” He placed his free hand on Sanford’s forearm, feeling the slight roughness to his skin from all the work they’d done in the past. “I can go smoke somewhere else.”

“Nah, stay here. I wanna be with you, Dei.” He yawned, nestling his head into his neck and ghosting a kiss on his skin. Pulling him even closer.

Deimos made a small noise, hooking his arm around his partner to keep himself steady. “So snuggly.” He chuckled softly, kissing Sanford’s head in return. This prompted his partner to begin kissing all over his neck and throat, slowly, as if he wanted to cover every inch of skin with his lips. Deimos let his eyes fall shut, blissful in Sanford’s touch.

His lips came off his neck, one more fleeting touch to his jaw, before he caught his lips on his own, kissing him deeply. The taste of smoke was still fresh, but Sanford didn’t care. Deimos put his hand to his cheek, pulling him in for more. Intoxicated by affection. Sanford parted from him for a moment, taking the cigarette out of his lover's hand, met with no resistance, leaning into him and placing it into the ashtray on the bedside table behind him. Deimos didn’t complain. He just wrapped his arms around Sanford’s neck, grinning like an idiot, bearing all his sharp teeth.

“Hey, pretty boy.” Deimos cooed, pressing his forehead to Sanford’s. “It’s nice seeing you without the shades, y’know.”

“Come on, it’s not that different.” He smiled softly at the smaller man, his thumb gently massaging right above his hip.

“Sure it is! It’s like, you’re naked without ‘em. You’ve had them forever, now. But, I like it when you take them off.” He let his fingers uncurl, feeling out the width of Sanford’s massive shoulders. Deimos was rather small in comparison to the hunk of a man, but he didn’t mind. Sanford was careful and gentle with him, always.

“Well, at least you like it both ways.” His hand slowly snaked up his top, his hand rubbing along his back and side, making Deimos shiver and press into him even more.

“Your hands are freezing .” He muttered, his hands sliding down across his chest.

“Yeah, and you’re warm.” Sanford smirked, sliding the hacker into his lap. Deimos didn’t complain, stretching out his legs so they were resting partially bent across Sanford’s thighs. “Can you do that thing?”

“What thing?” Deimos raised a brow at him, gently removing Sanford’s cold hand from his body, opting to hold it instead.

“Y’know, that thing you can do?”

“… Not following.”

“The— thing!” Sanford pondered for a second, squeezing Deimos’ hand. “Warm me up, y’know?”

“Oh, that thing.” He smiled faintly, rubbing his thumb across Sanford’s knuckles. “Well, are you ready?”

“Mhm. But, get in closer, let me really hold you.” He wrapped his arms around his partner, reclining a little to get Deimos snug against him. He followed, resting his head against his chest, snuggling up underneath his chin. “Now I am.”

“Okay. Tell me if it’s too much. Don’t wanna overdo it.” He laughed, before shifting a little to ready himself.

One perk of having a boyfriend who could control his own fire was that he was always warm. And he could control that too. The heat grew immense, pleasantly though, like an electric blanket. Sanford felt drowsy, cradling Deimos in his arms, embracing all that warmth.

“Good?” Deimos said softly.

“Good.” He rubbed his back, smiling. “Thank you.”

“Anything for you, baby.” He hummed, content in his hold. It had been a while since they had really indulged in each other’s presence like this. They stayed like that for a while.

It was nice.

Suddenly their door opened, jolting them both out of their comfort, sitting up suddenly in embarrassment. At least they were both clothed.

“Oh. You’re awake.” Hank stood ominously in the doorway, completely black as he was shrouded by the dark, give for the stark contrast of his red goggles. Like a cat getting its picture taken with flash to reveal its hiding space.

“Are you ever going to learn how to knock?” Deimos grumbled, visibly frustrated with his cheeks flushed.

“I didn’t think you were up.”

“You still knock, dumbass!”

Hank growled, but they paid it no mind. “Sorry for interrupting… whatever this is. But Doc asked me to come and get you. So get your asses down there, and it won’t happen again.”

“Yeah, yeah, we’re comin.” Sanford piped up. “Thanks, Hank.”

“Mm.” Was all they said before closing the door behind him, heavy footsteps receding down the hall.

“Ugh— do we have to?” Deimos wrapped his arms around Sanford’s neck again, clinging onto him tightly. “It’s not fair.”

“Well, we have been relaxing for a while, Dei.” He smiled fondly, patting his back. “We kind of do have to, or I think Doc will kill us.”

“I don’t think he has the guts. I could fight that old man and win.”

“I’m not so sure about that, love.”

“I could!”

“Mhm.”

“You are so mean to me, you know.” Deimos pouted, sticking his tongue out at his lover, who rolled his eyes in return.

“Come on, let’s not keep them waiting.” Sanford snickered, relinquishing his hold on the small man, waiting for him to let him go so they could get ready for the day. But he didn’t. “Dei, come on.”

He huffed, sighing. “One more kiss for the road. Just in case.”

“Oh, alright. Just for you.” Sanford murmured, leaning in and kissing him softly. Deimos gently cupped his cheeks, eagerly deepening the kiss, urging him to stay like this longer. Sanford gently denied him this pleasure, pulling away.

Work had to be done.

Deimos looked a little disappointed, but still seemed pleased overall. “I love you.” He said, barely above a whisper.

“I love you too.” Sanford planted one last kiss just above his brow, and Deimos finally let his hands fall away so they could get ready for the day.

“Okay, no more stalling or Doc will kill me.” He scrambled to get off the bed, stretching his arms up over his head. “Or Hank will. Or both of them. I guess—“

“Dei.”

“Right. Sorry.” He checked the still somewhat smoking cigarette from earlier, picking up what was left and taking one last drag, exhaling with a sigh. He stubbed it out on the tray. “Okay.”

“Ready?” He asked, putting on his shades but sliding them up onto his forehead so he could see.

“Guess so.” He circled around to be by his side, taking his hand again. “Need another kiss though.”

“You are so needy today.” Sanford remarked, smiling at him.

“Hey, small price to pay for keepin’ ya warm.” He grinned back, tugging gently, beckoning him closer to take his lips against his again.

Deimos was lucky Sanford was willing to give him all the affection he asked for.

As always, he happily obliged.

Notes:

Also! Part of this fic was inspired by art/headcanon where Dei can make himself warm but I am so sorry I saw it so long ago I’m not entirely sure who I took that from ;; if I can find it ever I’ll link it in the future.
