Chapter Text
An alarm goes off with a shrill ring, signaling to a sleeping girl that it's time to get ready for school. She reluctantly sits up, pressing the 'off' button on her ringing cell phone. Rubbing the drowsiness out of her bright blue eyes, she greets the morning sun peeking through the blinds. Today is her first day as a high school student of the prestigious Yamaha private academy. She used to attend a regular school in her old town, but ever since becoming widely known as the pop sensation, Miku Hatsune, public school meant being bombarded and crowded by fans, and even being followed home regularly. Her once large group of friends became murky, some resenting her for becoming so popular, and others treating her superficially because of her fame. The only person to stick by her side was her childhood friend, Teto Kasane (she'd been held back in school for years on end, so she understood what it was like to be ostracized). It hurt Miku to have to leave her best friend, but at least she now has a chance to live a somewhat regular life. Plus, she's still able to talk to Teto every day through video calls, often lasting for hours on end late into the night. Planning her debut at school, she brushes out her long blue-green hair and dons her uniform. Aside from it having amazing security, Yamaha academy is attended by many other japanese idols, some of which she's been able to perform alongside in past shows. Hopefully she won't stick out as much, since she's not the only famous singer at the school. She runs down the stairs of her home, into the kitchen where she's greeted by her father and a delicious breakfast.
"There's my girl! Ready for your first day of fancy-pants school?"
Taking a bite of scrambled egg, she laughs at his joke.
"Dad, you're gonna make me feel like a spoiled rich girl!"
Despite her upbeat and lighthearted nature, she does feel bad for all that she has. The tuition for Yamaha academy is super expensive, but with all of her earnings as a musician, she was able to pay it off without any worry. The house they got when they moved is more akin to a mansion, and it has an entire studio on the third floor! Every day, Miku makes a conscious effort to appreciate the things that she's been fortunate enough to earn. She refuses to hire any sort of staff, and even though she's been offered a limo to ride to and from school, she declined in order to walk. Before heading off to school, she opens her phone and writes a quick post to her twitter.
twintails39: Omw to school, thank you to everyone for all of your support! I truly wouldn't have made it this far without all of you, thank you so so much!! <3
She puts her phone on silent, and looking optimistically towards her future, steps out the door into the bright world outside.
As she walks towards her school, Miku checks the schedule in her hand. The morning bell rings at 8:00, so she made sure to leave extra time to get there before then. Maybe she left a bit too much time, considering it's 7:30 and she's nearly there already. Approaching the gates of the school, she gets her student badge ready. A security guard checks her I.D. before letting her through, where she stands in awe for a moment. A giant brick building stands at the top of a hill, surrounded by lush greenery and gardens. For a moment she wonders if maybe she wandered into a politician's estate, rather than her school. As she walks up the paved road, anxiety starts to seep into her head. Seeing all the students milling around, chatting with their friends and sharing memories, she begins to feel really lonely. She takes a deep breath, bringing back her upbeat self.
"Relax, Miku, you got this! If you can sing in front of millions of people, this should be a piece of cake..."
When she walks through the front doors, she looks for her locker. Conveniently, it's her lucky number 39. Noticing the other students nervously reviewing their timetables, it comforts her to know that she's not the only one who's anxious. Switching into her school shoes, she locks up her bag, before making her way to homeroom.
Miku stands in front of the door to room 1-E, taking a deep breath. Determined to make a good first impression, she puts a smile on her face, and opens the door. She sits down at a desk in the second row, towards the center. This is on purpose, because she's not going to be as noticeable as she would be if she chose to sit in the very back, or near the edges. Hidden in plain sight, just how she likes it. Throughout the next ten minutes, students start to file into the classroom. At 8:00 sharp, the bell rings over the speakers, as the door slams open. Two students stand there, clearly out of breath. Two blondes, one male and one female, look up at the teacher. The boy holds up his pointer finger, smiling.
"Just- hah, Just in time!"
The girl elbows him softly, walking past him into the class.
"We wouldn't have had to rush if someone didn't spend an hour on his hair!"
She sits down in the seat next to Miku, and her brother takes the seat behind her. The teacher sighs, and starts to write on the chalkboard.
"Alright kids, my name is Ms. Meiko, I'll be your homeroom teacher along with history. Most of the staff here wouldn't have let that slide-"
She gestures towards the twins, who laugh nervously.
"-But I like to consider myself to be pretty relaxed. Now, since it's the first day, I'll have each of you come up to the front and introduce yourself. Starting off with the first row..."
The student closest to the door stands up, walking to the front of the class to introduce himself.
"Hi, uh, my name is Koji Hashimada, and I like to paint."
The rest of the introductions go similarly for a while, until the blonde girl is called. She clears her throat, and speaks with confidence.
"My name is Rin Kagamine, I'm a killer guitar player and singer! Nice to meet'cha!"
Miku stands up and takes her place, keeping a polite smile on her face.
"Hi, I'm Miku Hatsune! I'm also a musician, and I can't wait to get to know you all!"
As she returns to her seat, she sighs in relief. Student after student stand at the front, as Miku writes down the name and interests of every one of her classmates.
"I'm Len Kagamine, A.K.A. the better twin!"
He smirks at Rin, who rolls her eyes.
"Ah, My name is Megumi Nakajima, but Gumi is fine! I like sports and playing the drums!"
With the green haired girl sat back down in her seat, introductions are over. Miku reads through her notes, trying to memorize the names of every person. Rin peeks over to her desk, bored and curious.
"What'cha workin on?"
Miku smiles bashfully, trying not to seem creepy.
"Ah, I'm bad at names, so I'm making sure to memorize everyone's names and hobbies! I'm actually surprised I didn't recognize you and Len before, considering how much I listen to your songs..."
Rin nods happily, resting back in her chair. Len leans over his desk towards Miku, blushing.
"W-wait, you like our music?? Miku Hatsune, the one and only, likes our music?! ohmygoshohmygos-"
Rin turns around and whacks him on the head, and apologizes to her classmate.
"Sorry about him! But to be honest, I can get how he feels, ahaha."
Miku, Rin, and Len spend the rest of the period discussing various stories related to developing music. Glad to have made two friends in just the first period, Miku smiles to herself.
As the day continues, Miku takes note of what her teachers are like as well. The English teacher Ms. Megurine is pretty strict, but not mean. Mr. Kaito teaches math and Japanese, as well as being a stickler for the rules. During lunch, Miku sits alone in the school garden as she reads through her messages. She opens an email from her manager, telling her that while she's at school, she has to keep her reputation solid. Frustrated, she shuts off her phone and takes a bite of her onigiri.
"Yeah yeah, I've been doing that my whole life y'know..."
The rest of the school day goes by, until the final bell rings. Miku stops at her locker, grabbing her stuff and leaving the building. Len sees a pair of cyan twin tails, and jogs over, leaving his sister behind.
"Hey Miku! Walking home?"
"Yep! I like to keep active, and I feel spoiled being driven..."
She laughs lightheartedly, and Len rubs his hand through his hair.
"Y-yeah, me too..! Rin insists on getting driven, but I just walk!"
Miku gives him a sarcastic look, knowing that he's just lying to seem less lazy.
"Okay okay, that was a lie. But it won't be a lie for much longer! I vow to never drive to school again!"
They both laugh at his promise, walking down the sidewalk. When Miku reaches her house, she waves goodbye to her friend.
"See you tomorrow!"
Her father peers out the window, and gives her a smirk.
"Wow, a boyfriend on the first day?"
Knowing that he's joking around, she rolls her eyes playfully.
"No, his name is Len. You know, as in Rin and Len, the Kagamine twins?"
"I knew he looked familiar!"
Miku hugs her dad, then heads upstairs to her room. She changes out of her uniform, and into her casual clothes.
Despite being tired, Miku decides to go for a walk around town. As she wanders through the local park, she thinks of possible song lyrics and melodies. In the soccer field, she notices a couple of her classmates playing a game of soccer. She considers waving to them, but a stray kick sends the ball flying in her direction. Miku grabs it, and tosses it to Gumi.
"Hey, thanks! Miku, was it?"
"Yup! Didn't expect to run into you here, you having fun?"
She nods, pushing her short green hair out of her face.
"Yeah, Niko's just helping me practice for tryouts!"
He waves at Miku, with his brown hair tied back in a ponytail.
"Well, it was fun seeing you two! See you tomorrow at school?"
Gumi and Niko nod, as Miku continues on her walk. It doesn't last for much longer, though, as she has to make sure she's home before the sun starts to set. When she gets to her house, she prepares dinner for her and her father. After they eat, she heads upstairs, up to the third floor. She sits down at her piano, and runs through the melody that she had been thinking of earlier. Happy with how it sounds, she writes down the notes along with the lyrics that she matched to them. As an idol, Miku prides herself on writing her own songs. Her studio team had suggested many times that she let them write some music for her, seeing how much she was pushing herself, but she refused. What's the point in being a star if it's not your songs that you sing? As she sees the sky darken through the window, she forces herself to get to bed. She ties up her long hair in tight braids to keep it from getting too tangled, and turns off her bedside lamp. This was just the first day in her new life, with many, many more to come.
