Just A Break

Summary:

“Just a small break!” Cedric tried to reassure her, “I don’t want anyone else, but I also feel guilty when I can’t write to you or see you as often as I’d like, so until it all gets sorted out and we’re in the same country again…” He trailed off, before starting again, “… My father says it’s a good way to make a couple’s bond stronger and- “

“- Oh, of course it’s what your father wants.” Cho snapped. She was not a big fan of Amos Diggory.

Work Text:

“You’re over-reacting.” Cho rolled her eyes at Marietta, “Cedric has just gotten the job of his dreams, as have I, why would we end our relationship now?”

“You’re on different teams!” Marietta exclaimed, “What happens when Quidditch rivalry takes over! That. And you’ll barely see each other.”

“We’ve been together since Hogwarts, we’re better than that. Besides we were opposing seekers, remember? And we didn’t argue then.”

It had been years since they left Hogwarts, and Marietta hadn’t changed at all. She was one of Cho’s oldest friends though, she had to keep reminding herself of that.

Cho sighed at the next letter that she received…. Very busy… don’t know when I can next visit you.

It had been over 8 months since she’d last seen him.

Maybe she should try and get some time off herself? To go and finish him if he was that busy?

………………………………………………………….

The letters came in slower and slower and less frequently, and Cho’s worries started to increase.

Trying not to let her panic over-ride her common sense, she arranged a fire call with her boyfriend, hoping that they could arrange some sort of get-together, maybe a few months off to reconnect.

She wasn’t expecting to see Cedric sigh wearily.

“I… I would rather do this in person.”

“Do what?” Cho felt her stomach sinking, hearing Marietta’s voice in the back of her mind, telling her that this was it.

“I think we should have a break, from this relationship I-I mean.”

Cho blinked, hoping that she’d heard him wrong. “What?”

After the Triwizard Tournament, when it was unsure as to whether or not Cedric would survive, Amos led a hateful campaign against Harry that she had never forgiven him for. There was also the fact that was not who he had in mind to marry his perfect son and heir.

“Cho… I still love you.”

And yet he was suggesting this like it was nothing to him.

“Right.” She said blankly.

“… I’m sorry.”

“Yeah.”

“… Are you okay? It’s just for a little bit!”

Cho couldn’t reply, feeling like her heart was sinking down to her stomach. She loved Cedric, they’d planned on getting married at some point and now- now this.

“Cho?”

“… Good luck.” Was all she could say, before she was ending the floo call and scrambling away from the fireplace, needing to crawl into her bed and have a good cry.

She didn’t tell Marietta.

She didn’t want to hear her friend reminding her that she warned her of this.

………………………………………….

Cho threw all of her efforts into making the first team in her professional team, making sure that she was too busy to pine over Cedric.

School sweethearts broke up or ‘took breaks’ all the time.

This was nothing new and she couldn’t focus on that.

But focus on this she did, with no exercises or drills able to stop her from thinking about Cedric.

She ignored his floo calls and set up a ward to block his letters.

What she didn’t think would happen, was him showing up at her door, looking more than a little downtrodden and miserable.

“What are you doing here Cedric?” She asked, suddenly feeling wearily, “Doesn’t your team have a championship soon?”

“Not until next week.” Cedric whispered, “I wanted to see you.”

“I thought you wanted to be on a break? Remember? A break from us?!”

“… I don’t.” Cedric was staring a spot on the floor, looking like he was trying to hide behind his longish hair, “I-I miss you. I miss…everything about being with you.”

“Is this you saying that you want to get back together?” Cho raised an eyebrow, “What about what your father said?”

“I don’t care what he thinks.” Cedric straightened up a little, “I love you, and I don’t care what he thinks about that.” The nervousness then crept back onto his face, “You can think about it though, I mean- I’m not saying we have to get right back together but- “

Cho cut him off by pulling him into a hug.

Cedric stiffened up a little in surprise before he quickly relaxed and hugged her back.

“There’s nothing to think about.” Cho whispered, “Just… before you agree to do anything your father tells you to, talk to me?”

“I’m sorry.” Cedric whispered, turning his head so that his face was tucked against Cho’s neck.

“It’s okay.”

“It’s not… but thank you. I love you, you know?”

“I know… and I love you too.”
