Kokona knew what it's like to have feelings for someone because she felt it before. It would be a lie to say that she didn't feel a bit of butterflies whenever she sees Taro Yamada sitting at the courtyard's fountain.
She remembered how she used to act when those feelings towards him were so strong a few months ago. She would find herself standing behind a tree, watching him reading everyday. The mere mention of his name would turn her into a blushing mess, every single smiles and laughs of his, even if they weren't for her, would set her insides ablaze. Whenever he saw her while walking by and waved like he would to other students, Kokona could feel herself passing out.
They may not appear again whenever she sees the black haired boy, but she won't forget what it's like to fall for someone. She won't blatantly lie and said she didn't cry when Taro rejected her, but no matter how much it hurts when your feelings aren't reciprocated, Kokona are never against the idea of falling in love again.
But when she started feeling a bit upset watching her best friend, Saki talking happily with some random boy who she got paired with for an assignment, Kokona got worried.
"It's nothing," she thought. "I'm just jealous because she's more popular and she can talk to boys better than me," she affirmed to herself. "Or I just like that boy," she added. But then again, she didn't feel anything when looking at her best friend's company.
Turning to Saki on the other hand, put a shade of pink on her cheeks. As she laughs over something the boy said, Kokona couldn't help but feel angry and happy at the same time. She's been staring at them for the entirety of their interaction, but she got so lost in her own thoughts she didn't noticed Saki was done conversing and is heading to her side.
Only when Saki's face were a few inches away from her, calling her name did she snapped back to reality and fell backwards to the ground in surprise. "Ow!" she exclaimed. Seeing the look on Kokona's face, Saki giggled as she helped the purplenette gets up.
"What was that all about?" Saki asked with a chuckle.
That little noise of enjoyment is enough to turn Kokona red. "I don't know," she replied, pretending to fix her school uniform in an attempt to avoid eye contact.
Saki, who saw Kokona all flustered put it all together... wrongly. "Fancying a pink haired boy now, hm?" she teased with eyebrows raised.
"Wha-What?! No!" She had no time to react when Saki wrapped her arms around her and laughed.
"You totally do! You're blushing right now!" she pointed out, laughing even more. Realizing how close Saki is, Kokona reddened even more, getting closer to being a tomato.
"Saki.." she muttered under her breath, embarrassed.
"Fine, fine. Take your time. I'll be more than happy to help you get him," Saki reassured her. She then took hold of Kokona's hands and smiled brightly. "Now let's go have lunch!"
And that's the moment Kokona knew she fell in love once again.
A few months pass by, still thinking that Kokona likes Otohiko, the cyanette has been asking non-stop about how will she confess to him despite Kokona denying it for hundreds of thousands if not millions of time. And since the day the purplenette realized about her feelings towards her best friend, her lovestruck symptoms only got worse.
Kokona would find herself staring at Saki at every chance she got. Her ability to maintain any eye contact with the latter has seemed to fade away over the course of a few months, not to mention how she began carrying a hand fan around in case Saki ever got physically close to her. If someone were to ever as much as to say the first syllables of Saki's name in front of Kokona, she would get this huge reaction, almost as if her heart was going to explode.
The cyanette never seemed to notice this though. In fact, to her, it only solidifies her theory of Kokona crushing on Otohiko. This could be attributed to the fact that the pinkette happened to pass by whenever her lovestruck symptoms got so bad that she got dragged to the infirmary multiple times.
Kokona, in fear that Saki might've misinformed the boy about her feelings, decided to meet him in private. She explained everything to him, although she did try to left out the part of her liking her own best friend but she most likely failed because the purplenette felt like he caught wind of it since at the end of their interaction, Otohiko said, "I don't have any feelings towards Saki, but I can see where you're coming from,"
That alone send Kokona into a panic state. "L-look it's not what you think it is!" she managed to stutter. "I was just-" Before she could finish her sentence, Otohiko quickly cut her off with a wave of his hand.
"Don't worry. I'm in the same boat as well," he told her, giving her a reassuring smile. With that, they ended the conversation there.
By the next day, their private meeting somehow got to Saki, who assumed Kokona finally confessed to the one person she loves.
"What happened?!" Saki yelled while slamming her hand on Kokona's desk, causing the poor girl to jump slightly. A certain Student Council's treasurer just happened to walk by the classroom and decided to listen in after hearing the commotion caused by the two current occupants.
"Did you guys kissed?!" she asked excitedly, leaning in closer to the purplenette who looks like she might faint if her blood starts rushing to her head.
"No! We just talked! That's all!" she retorted. It was the truth after all. Well half the truth but she didn't have to know the rest... Yet.
"Then tell me what you guys talked about!" she insisted. Kokona looked away to the window beside her, avoiding the gaze of her best friend.
Aoi turned the corner and see Shiromi acting suspicious outside class 1-1. The bluenette approaches her with the intent of asking why Shiromi isn't patrolling but the silverette pulled her down and shushed the eyepatched girl with a kiss before mouthing "Listen". And now the two Student Council member are just crouched down outside the classroom, eavesdropping on the convo happening inside.
Kokona's mind ran hundreds of miles per milliseconds trying to come up with something to say that doesn't involve what the purplenette and pinkette really talked about yesterday. "Well we... I..." Kokona tried to speak, but couldn't form a complete sentence due to Saki's intense stare. She knows the cyanette will not let this slide easily now. There's only one safe way out.
"Okay, fine I like him!" She blurted out, making Saki gasp and clap her hands.
"Took you long enough! So did you confessed to him?" she asked Kokona curiously. The latter nodded hesitantly, earning a smile from Saki. "Ooo, what's the verdict?" Saki continued to tease, putting her hand over her hip.
"He rejected me," the purplenette admitted with her eyes cast downwards. Hearing those words sent Saki into shock. "What?! Why?" Saki exclaimed. Not expecting this sudden outburst from the other girl, Kokona simply shrugged her shoulders while trying to make her act of being heartbroken from rejection believable.
Saki turned around to storm out but Kokona quickly grabbed her wrist to stop her. "Where are you going?" she asked.
"To tell him how unfair it is for him to reject you!" Saki stated, still struggling against Kokona's grip.
And as if summoned by Saki, Otohiko walked into the classroom after giving a confused look towards Aoi and Shiromi who signalled him to not say anything. The boy didn't want to get into trouble so he silently complied. Stepping into the classroom, he was greeted by a deadly glare from Saki. The cyanette would've surely pounced on him if it weren't for Kokona holding her back.
"Why would you reject her?!" she asked, anger evident in her tone.
"What?" Otohiko was very puzzled. He turned to Kokona whose face clearly begged him to play along. "Saki, I-" he couldn't even start because said girl interrupted.
"Look at her! She's pretty, sweet and caring and cute and... She's perfect! What else do you want?!" Saki shouted. By that point, everyone in the entire school has gathered outside the classroom to watch the scene unfold. This would count as a fight or altercation, meaning the Student Council members should've step in but they chose not to. At least for now. They did stood inside the class near the three students so they can act faster if the situation escalate.
Kokona felt like passing out by the compliments from the cyanette despite them being thrown while in a fit of rage. Hearing no words from the pinkette only enraged Saki more and she finally blurted out, "You know what?! If you're not gonna date her, I will!" that statement really took everyone by surprise.
Things like "If you were a (the opposite gender) I would date you" has been said by a lot of people towards another of the same sex. But no one expected to hear a girl saying she will date her best friend who are also a girl!
"This is so gonna be on my blog!" said Musume who has been recording the situation along with her bully buddies. Akane goes to them and grabbed their phones.
"Hey!" they protested.
"Sorry, dear! This is not why we allow phones in school," the redhead replied with a smile. "You can take them back after school at the Student Council's room,"
Saki realized what she just said and turned to Kokona whose cheeks are more red than ever. The cyanette's face started heating up too so she just grabbed the purplenette's hand and ran out of the classroom. While being pulled along, Kokona saw Otohiko giving her a thumbs up.
"I'm instructing everyone to go back to their business. Let them be," Megami told the rest of the students. Her stern tone is enough to make everyone do so. The bullies are still pissed about their confiscated phones but they decided to go to the bathroom and gossip about what just transpired.
Two girls were sitting against the mystical cherry tree, panting. After a few minutes of heavy breathing, Saki noticed that she's still holding Kokona's wrist. As she slowly loosened her grip, the purplenette moved and intertwined their fingers together. Saki couldn't help but blushed at the gesture. She's not exactly used to not be the one initiating physical contact between them so this made things feel different.
Becoming more daring, Kokona scooted closer to Saki and leaned her head onto the cyanette's shoulder. She does it slowly in fear that the latter would suddenly move away which Saki fortunately didn't do. After some time both have calmed down and they sat comfortably side by side, watching the sky above them in silence for a while.
"So what are we?" Kokona broke the silence first. Saki tilted her head a bit in confusion. Her cheeks then tinted pink when she realized that the purplette was talking about their relationship.
"We're best friends of course," she answered jokingly while leaning her head on top of Kokona's.
Kokona didn't catch that so in a disappointed tone, she said, "Oh. I didn't know best friends do these things,"
"Do what?"
"Lean on each other's shoulders, yell out they will date each other and stuff like that," Kokona replied while loosening her grip on the other girl's hands. Saki used her other hand to caress the purplenette's cheek, prompting her to face the cyanette.
"You wanna know?" she asked with a teasing smile.
"Know wha..." Kokona trailed off as she saw Saki's lips coming closer to hers.
Before she could process what was happening, her best friend had already closed the distance between them. Kokona could only sat there frozen as Saki captured her lips in a soft kiss. It wasn't an awkward peck nor a fast one. It just felt natural for the two of them. Kokona couldn't help but melt a little bit.
When they broke apart to catch a breath, Kokona stared at Saki in with a glint of mischief in her eyes. "Is that also a best friend thing?"
"It can be. I'd rather it be a couples' thing though," Saki replied with a wink.
The purplenette laughed softly in response before saying, "Only after you apologize to Otohiko. You caused quite a scene,"
"It's his fault for rejecting a goddess,"
"Well, about the rejection thing..."
