A Small Piece of Steak

Summary:

Life turned out to be nice for once when you made a small, new friend eating food underneath your bed.

Notes:

Writing Prompt:
You drop a small piece of food on the floor, and decide to kick it under the over/couch/whatever because you can’t be bothered to pick it up. As you’re walking away, you hear a very quiet “Thank you!” from under it.

I lost some creativity so I had to look for a writing prompt. Then, I came upon this one and eventually made this wholesome fanfic! Yes, I did research about bunnies.

Work Text:

I sighed in annoyance as my parents left me alone for the third time this week. Whatever they had planned wasn't enough for me to have freedom for once. At least I was decent enough to fend myself for two days. Checking the fridge, I decided to eat a few pieces of steak from yesterday’s dinner. Heating them up in the microwave, I waited for a few minutes. Once it’s done, I placed them on the plate and decided to eat at my room.

There was nothing else to do other than keeping track of my schoolwork so I decided to scroll through my social media feed. One of the pieces fell down but I didn't realized so I brushed it away until it was under the bed. I started to walk away to grab water when I heard a  "Thank you!"

I looked up from my phone. What was that mysterious voice and why was it under the bed? Placing the plate on my side, I crawled to look down and I saw a white bunny...munching on the steak. Frozen in thought, it spooked me when it started to speak.

"Oh sorry, I was too focused on the food that I haven't introduced myself. I'm Tomo, what's yours?" it greeted. First off, this is definitely a weird rabbit if it eats my steak. Secondly...

"YOU CAN TALK???" I exclaimed.

"Well, not around people. I guess only you can understand me," he said. I took a deep breath before I gave myself an introduction.

"Everyone knows me as Julia, nice to meet you," I greeted. The bunny tried to shake my hand but he needed to hop a little bit for his paws to reach. Then, I told him to finish that steak so we can talk properly over this.

"Done!" he happily said. Wow, that was fast. We got to talk more about our personal lives, although his was more interesting. He came from an odd place, living with four other friends, then he might've hitchhiked into my parents' car and somehow made it to our house. Surprisingly, he's got fast legs for a bunny to run all the way to my bed.

"How long have you been living down there?" I asked.

"A month, to be exact. Time is a confusing concept for me." He tilted his head a little. He wanted to eat a little more so I carried him to the kitchen. I already finished my food so I placed them in the sink to wash them later. "Do you want something to drink?" I opened the fridge.

"I would like some water, please!" he said. So, I poured some into a little crock (a rabbit's water bowl) and carefully placed it in front of him. I sneaked in a couple of grass from the garden cause bunnies do eat them to their heart's content.

Tomo had no way to go home now that he decided to live with us, so I just need a little bit of convincing and find more food to feed. I already took care of a rabbit temporarily before so I still have an extra cage. Thank goodness my parents were kind enough when I called them. As long as I held the responsibility, I didn't mind though. It's nice to have some company while they're out there dealing with busy jobs.

Although, I may had to tell them a white lie so that they wouldn't be disappointed with me.

Since it was kinda dusty under the bed, I decided to give the rabbit a bath. Throughout the time, he wasn't fussy and waited for the whole thing to be over. I brushed its fluffy fur while I was watching my favorite movie.

It was practically the same routine until my parents came home. I told them the proper truth and no surprise, they were a little disappointed but hey, at least they didn't bother it long enough.

"I'm glad he is a part of our family now," my mom said. I smiled, holding the bunny in my arms.

So, after days of buying some bunny supplies and bringing him to the vet for regular checkups, he settled in quite nicely at our house. Who knows, maybe we'll find his other friends. After all, being lonely isn't so bad when one gets to have a friend.
