Kicking it Nevada-Style

Summary:

You ran through the songs with Sunday, no problem, and you're ready to sub in for their co-vocalist at the conert tonight. There's only one more song they want to sing with you.

Work Text:

You watch as Carol slams the door shut behind her, the sound of it barely reaching your still-ringing ears. You breathe a sigh of relief, thanking yourself for not mentioning that the microphone was unplugged.

“Well, that’s all.” Your companion carefully leans their electric guitar against the wall. “You’re pretty good to go for the concert, I guess. Thanks a bunch. ”

You graciously accept the thanks, putting your trusty microphone back in your pocket. You watch as Sunday casually takes the main speakers and pushes them into the far corner of the garage.

You turn to leave. You’re definitely not able to pick up any of that heavy equipment. Besides, it was a hot day outside, doing all that golfing. Some water sounds nice.

“Oh, hey. Before you go.” Sunday’s voice stops you as you turn the doorknob. “Wanna do one more song? It’s not for the concert or anything, it’s just for fun.”

You stand there and think about it. One more song couldn’t hurt, right? On the other hand, that is what Garcello said not too long ago, right before kicking the bucket. And you are pretty tired.

“I mean, you don’t have to. But this is gonna be a really short fanfic if you don’t.”

You shrug and turn around, pulling your microphone back out. Even if you don’t really understand what Sunday just said, you’re not that tired. Might as well have a little more fun.

“Alright, cool, cool. This one is, like, kinda nuts. But it’s a fun song. I think you’ll like it.”

You question what kind of song would qualify as “nuts” to someone like Sunday as they adjust the dials of the secondary speaker. After a few moments, they press the “play” button, walk over to the microphone stand, and begin to strum their guitar violently.

It takes you a few moments to recognize the chords. When you do, your hands start to shake a little. You remember the blood red skies, the pebbles under your feet, the demonic monster dueling you in the place where hell touched the earth. How did they know this song?

You nearly missed your cue to start singing, your beeps stumbling for a moment as you caught up with the beat Sunday was setting. Soon enough, though, your voice rang out loud and clear, the syllables coming out just as you remembered from Nevada.

Even still, it’s still no easy feat to keep up. Didn’t Tricky need the power of an Improbability Drive to rap this fast?

You look at the rockstar across from you during the slower part of the pre-chorus. Despite nearly being out of breath yourself, Sunday still looks like they might fall asleep at any time. And yet, they’re still screaming so loudly that your beeps are nearly being drowned out.

The song picks up speed again, but this time, you’re ready. Yet despite the torrent of sound, you sing along well enough. Probably better than last time, now that red static isn’t filling your vision every two seconds, to be honest.

You top off the last verse with a little “yeah!”, and just like that, the song’s over.

You suck in a deep breath and wipe the sweat off your brow. Even when the person you’re singing with isn’t trying to kill you, rapping that quickly is pretty exhausting.

“Wow. I knew you were good, but I didn’t know you were that good. Nice job.”

You smile a little bit, before hesitantly asking where they heard the song before.

“Hm? You haven’t seen that documentary series? Madness Combat?”

You raise an eyebrow. Someone was making a documentary on the war in Nevada? Why? Who was even crazy enough to go in there and try to get footage?

“Yeah, this song is one of those background tracks in it, I guess. I like it. We should binge the show sometime.”

You nod in agreement. Yeah, probably a good idea to give it a look. It would be good to have some information just in case you get dragged back there again, somehow. Or meet someone from there. Probably wouldn’t ever happen, but given just how wild of a ride your life has been recently, it couldn’t hurt.

Notes:

Sunday is a fun character.
