Accidents Happen.

Summary:

“Dustin-I know you told me to stay away from Kira in the beginning-and maybe if I was a better friend I would have, but I’m not a good friend and I didn’t stay away.“

An accidental kiss in the kitchen leads to pure chaos as Steve Harrington and Kira Henderson try to hide their relationship from everyone, but mostly Dustin.

Work Text:

Kira Henderson was cleaning up in the kitchen after a failed attempt of making cookies. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong.

First the butter burnt, then the dough was not doing so hot, then they burnt the cookies, Will got frosting all over himself, Max burnt her hand on one of the cookies, Lucas choked on sprinkles, Mike broke all the cookies he tried to decorate, Dustin got food coloring all over the table, El being the doll she is tried to get said food coloring off the table by using her powers, but it ended up all over the counter instead, and finally Steve dropped the cookies on the floor once they were done.

But hey. It was still a great experience, and everyone helped clean up in the end.

So here Kira was trying to wipe up the food coloring that got on the counter, but it was soon going to be interrupted by Steve Harrington.

“Hey I think I’m gonna head out.” Steve says as he walks into the kitchen, but Kira doesn’t look at him and continues to wipe the counter.

“Okay. You sure you don’t want to stay? I think I head Dustin talking about a movie marathon.” Kira says, but she keeps her eyes on the counter, so she doesn’t see how close Steve actually was to her.

“I’m sure. Even though a movie marathon sounds amazing right now, I should be going.” Kira nods and stands up to her full height before turning to look at Steve, but she turns just as Steve leans in closer to kiss her cheek goodbye (a thing they started doing, but haven’t talked about yet).

So their lips end up touching. They stare at each other with wide eyes before pulling away. Both of their faces heat up and continue to stare at each other.

“See ya.” Steve says before turning around and practically running out the door. Kira’s still frozen there when the front door slams shut, but she quickly moves after to act like nothing happened.

But the thing is Kira knows she can’t act like nothing happened because she’s wanted that to happen for so long, and even though it was an accident, a part of her is believing that it’s real.

She tries to go back to wiping the counter when the front door slams open, then shut, and suddenly Steve is back in the kitchen. They both stare at each other again, each of them not knowing what to say.

Well… I guess they didn’t really need any words, their eyes kinda did all the talking. And the words they exchanged were “take me now”.

Steve walks towards Kira with so much power in his step that a gate to the Upside Down would close just from hearing it. And when he reaches her, he grabs her face and places a firm kiss to her lips.

Though it was just chaste kiss so much emotion was shared during it. It showed how much Steve wanted Kira, and by her not immediately pulling away she showed the same thing.

When they do finally pull away, Kira mutters the words, “I really like you Steve Harrington” he just grins and places his forehead against hers. “I really like you too Kira Henderson.” Steve mutters before moving his hands from her face to her waist, while Kira moves her hands from her sides to around Steve’s neck.

She pulls him into another kiss, but instead of a boring chaste kiss it’s a full on make out session against the Henderson’s kitchen counter. It was going strong too, lots of emotion, passion, coughing-wait coughing?

The two of them pull away to be met with the smug face of Mike Wheeler, the worst member of the party. He gives the two love struck teens a smirk before trying to run to the living room, probably to yell about what he just saw, but Kira was quicker. Growing up with these little assholes has its perks.

Kira tackles Mike to the ground and covers his mouth with her hand, he glares at her before licking Kira’s hand, and even though it’s disgusting, she pushes through.

“Nice try Wheeler. I’ve built up a tolerance to the gross stuff the party does.” Mike glares harder before blinking five times, a sign that you give up, and Kira all but grins as she pulls Mike to his feet, her hand firm against his mouth.

“How about we have a chat in the kitchen Wheeler?” Kira asks as she leads him into the kitchen, where a frozen Steve was still standing from getting caught, but he quickly shakes it off as he sees Kira and Mike come into the kitchen instead of a fuming Dustin.

The thing is…Dustin has told Steve that if he ever hit on his sister that he would personally make sure his life was a living hell. It scares Steve to even think about how he would react if he knew what just went on in his kitchen.

“Mike listen.” Kira starts as she removes her hand from covering his mouth to holding his shoulders. “You can’t tell Dustin what you just saw. It-it would literally make him go insane.” Mike rolls his eyes and crosses his arms.

“He’s gonna be pissed when he finds out that you kept it a secret from him.” Steve sighs knowing that the little Wheeler was correct. “Yeah he will, but that’s why we’re gonna ease our way into showing off our relationship. Not by just dropping the bomb on him that you caught us making out.”

Mike again rolls his eyes and scoffs at the two older teens, and Kira is starting to get seriously pissed at him. “Oh cut the bullshit Wheeler. Everyone knows that you and El are sucking each other faces when everyone else isn’t around.” That makes Mike drop his head and causes his face to burn a bright red.

“Now do you promise to keep this a secret until we tell everyone?” Kira asks as she stands up to her full height, but he still doesn’t look convinced. “What’s in it for me?” Mike asks, and Kira turns to look at the all too quiet Steve. He sighs before rubbing his face. “Free Ice Cream for a month.”

Mike thinks it over before shaking his head and smirking evilly, “ Free ice cream until you two confess, and then you have yourselves a deal.” Steve now groans before nodding his head and sticking out his hand. “Deal.” Mike gives a satisfied smile before turning around and heading back into the living room.

“I thought he was so gonna tell on us.” Steve says as he lets out a breath he was obviously holding, but Kira just smiles and pats him on the shoulder.

“He was never gonna tell. I have so much dirt on him that I could get him in to stop speaking for a month.” Steve lets out an airy laugh and wraps his arm around her waist. Kira looks at him with a love filled smile on her face, which he returns without hesitation.

“We should probably head back into the living room, just to make sure.” Kira nods before removing herself from his hold and making her way to the living room with Steve following close behind her.

Once they enter all eyes land on them. Kira’s eyes flicker to Mike, giving him a threatening glare, before returning to look at all the kids.

“Where have you two been?” Dustin asks as he pauses the movie, Star Wars, and looks at them with a confusion written all over his face.

“He was helping me clean up the kitchen, unlike you-“

“You said we didn’t have to help!”

“I was talking to the guests not you! You live here you have to help too!”

Dustin mumbles something under his breath and angrily crosses his arms across his chest before unpausing the movie, everyone else shrugs at the interaction and returns their eyes to the screen.

Steve sits down in between Dustin and Max while Kira sits on the floor next to Will. Their secret was kept, and the two of them couldn’t be happier.

Now keeping the secret had to be the hardest part, they’ve almost been caught too many times. And you would think that they would learn by now, but no. Slip ups of almost calling each other pet names in front of the gang happen way to often, and Robin has already walked in on them making out. They weren’t doing so hot.

They both thought that they were screwed when Dustin came home early from a DND meeting with the rest of the party, and the two of them were in the middle of having sex.

The front door had opened just as they were close to finishing, so obviously they didn’t hear it. So it wasn’t until Dustin knocked on her door that they realized the situation they were in middle of.

“Kira.” Dustin said as his knocking became a constant. Kira and Steve’s eyes widened and he quickly pulled out of her before standing up and throwing on his clothes.

“Kira what are you doing in there?!” Kira opened the window and watched as Steve hopped out of it, thank god for her house being one story.

“I’m going to open the door-“

“Don’t open the door! Hold on!” Kira yelled back before she pressed a goodbye kiss to Steve’s lips. She then shut the window and threw on a random sweatshirt and shorts.

“Jesus Dustin what?” Kira asked as she opened her bedroom door to find a suspicious Dustin, a confused Lucas and Will, and a disgusted knowing look from Mike.

“What were you doing in there?”

“I was working out. The gym was closed because their AC was out.” (Not a lie)

Dustin gave her a once over, but his eyes had stopped on her neck. Oh. No. “What’s on your neck?” He had asked, and now Lucas and Will were trying to get a closer look. “Mosquito bites. I was weeding earlier and got attacked by a swarm of then.”

“Why are they purple-“

“I’ve been scratching them. Sue me.”

“Is that Steve’s sweatshirt?”

Now that question came from Mike. That little bastard. Kira shot him a nasty glare which he returned with a smug smile. So now she was racking her brain for a lie.

“Why do you have Steve’s sweatshirt-“

“He gave it to me last week during that big rain storm. I forgot my own.”

Dustin’s face relaxed as he easily believed the lie, and the smug smile on Mike’s face quickly fell. Kira was just too good.

“Wait when were you with Steve?”

“He gave me a ride home from work. I’ve just been forgetting to return it to him.” Kira explained, and that lie was perfect because he actually gave her a ride home that day. “Now I need to go shower.” Kira had pushed past the party and went into the bathroom, ready to celebrate her victory by finishing herself off.

The two now thought they had really good luck after that, but that was far from the truth because they ended up revealing themselves not a week later. In the stupidest way possible.

Everyone was over at the Henderson house again. This time for a game night with Robin, Nancy, and Jonathan joining them. Steve and Dustin just finished popping the popcorn and were about to pass them out to everyone.

“We’ve got popcorn birches!” Dustin yelled at everyone, which brought all of the eyes in the room to Dustin. Kira spun around on the couch so she was now facing the two popcorn wielding boys.

“Language Dusty.” Kira chastised before she grinned at Steve, and without thinking Steve had leaned forward and placed a chaste kiss to her lips. In. Front. Of. Everyone.

A bowl of popcorn hit the floor as gasps filled the room, well except for Mike who was currently loosing his shit on the floor. Again like Kira said “Little Bastard”.

Steve only had seconds to react before Dustin charged him and tried to take him down. Kira had quickly jumped the couch and grabbed Dustin who was currently hitting Steve repeatedly.

“If we’re not back in fifteen minutes call Hopper.” That’s all Kira said before she pulled both Steve and Dustin into her room, and as soon as she shut the door Dustin was trying to charge Steve again.

“You asshole! That’s my sister! I trusted you!” Dustin yelled at Steve, and Kira again had to hold him back. Thank god for weight lifting.

“Dustin that’s enough!” Kira yelled which thankfully put a stop to his endless trying to attack Steve. “Now we’re going to talk this out like the adults we are.”

Kira now had Dustin sitting on her bed while her and Steve were standing in front of him. She took a deep breath before starting.

“Steve and I are dating.”

“Yea no shit-“

“Dustin!”

Dustin glared at the pair as he rubbed angry tears from his eyes. He felt betrayed. His sister and his best friend. When him and Steve became friends, Dustin finally felt he had something to himself. He already had to share a sister with everyone else in the party, but now he had Steve, and no one but him wanted Steve. That was until now.

“Dustin please listen-“

“No! I’m not listening to your bull shit! I’ve had to share everything in my life! My personal life, the girl I liked, my friends, and you! Steve was the one thing that was mine, but now you have him too!”

After Dustin said that he just started to sob, and Kira’s heart broke. She didn’t know he felt like this, and she felt terrible about it. Guilt was now the only emotion she felt in this moment. But thank god for Steve.

He sat on the bed next to Dustin and pulled the sob ridden boy into a hug, and thankfully he didn’t push Steve away. After Dustin calmed down a bit more Kira decided to sit on the other side of him.

“Dusty I had no idea you felt this way, but if I had known I would have stayed away from him like the plague. But I didn’t know-and I can’t stay away from him.”

Kira had to take a deep breath to continue because she was about to confess something she hasn’t even told Steve yet.

“I couldn’t stay away from him even if you begged because-because I love him, I love him so much. A-and I’m sorry if it upsets you, but it happened and there’s nothing that could change the way I feel about him.”

Dustin and Steve both looked at Kira with widened eyes. Dustin because of shock, not knowing his sister felt this way about his best friend. And Steve because of-actually-Kira couldn’t tell, but hopefully it was a good reaction.

It was silent for a moment, only for a moment, before Steve decided it was his turn to speak.

“Dustin-I know you told me to stay away from Kira in the beginning-and maybe if I was a better friend I would have, but I’m not a good friend and I didn’t stay away.

I don’t regret not listening to you. I think it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made, besides choosing to be friends with you. And you can scream at me, or hit me all you want, but it’s not gonna change how I feel about her. It’s not gonna change the fact that I’m in love with her.”

Now it was time for Kira’s eyes to widen, and now she finally realized what she saw in Steve’s eyes. It was hope. Hope for a better future with the person you love. Hope for the relationship to last forever.

Kira reached over Dustin’s lap and grabbed Steve’s hand. He looked up at her and gave her a watery smile, and she gave him one back.

“I-I couldn’t ask you guys to break up. Steve practically lives at our house-it would just be weird. I-I just want to know why you didn’t tell me?” Dustin asked as he looked up at the people he loved the most.

“We knew you would have a reaction like this, and we still didn’t know what we wanted out of the relationship yet. But now we do, and yes you’re right we should have told you, and I’m sorry we didn’t.” Kira explained as she ran her free hand through Dustin’s hair.

“It’s okay. I’m just glad you guys talked to me about it, and not just continue on like nothing happened.”

“We may be assholes, but we’re not that big of assholes.” Steve said as he ruffled Dustin’s hair, which caused said boy to smack his hand away.

“This explains so much. Why Steve’s always over, the weird times your coming home at, the so called mosquito bites, and the noises I heard that one day-“

Kira covered Dustin’s mouth with her hand which shut him up quick, but once she pulled it away she pulled him into a hug.

“I love you Dustin Henderson the most. You always remember that, okay?” Dustin nodded and he didn’t fight when Kira pulled him out of the room.

Back in the living room everyone was chatting about the scene that happened thirteen minutes ago, but the conversation died down when the three walked back into the room.

“Good your back. I almost picked up the phone to call Hopper.” Mike said as he gave the two love birds a sickening smirk, but Kira rolled her eyes and gave him an even eviler smirk.

“You know this means no more free ice cream right?”

Mike’s face fell.

“Wait why was he getting free ice cream?” Dustin asked as he looked over at his friend who was currently glaring at the carpet.

“Walked in on something he wasn’t supposed to see.” Kira said as she walked over to her original spot on the couch, and Steve quickly followed and sat next to her.

“You got free ice cream?” Robin asked the sulking boy, and he nodded before he looked up at her.

“Ya. What did you get?”

“Steve as my personal chauffeur.”

“Should have bargained for more-“

“Stop talking about it.”

“So…were you really working out, or-“

A pillow was thrown at Lucas, and I’m not saying Kira didn’t throw it because she definitely did, but it was dark you couldn’t really tell who threw it…..two pillows may have been thrown.
