What good are powers you can’t use?

Summary:

Whats the point of having powers you can’t use. Loid has spent his whole life being told he can't use his incredible intelligence. When his best friend saves someones life right in front of him, he knows his life is about to be turned on its head.

Notes:

This is just a fun little story that I wrote for no reason. I'm not sure if I'm going to add more eventually but I hope you enjoy it as it is!

Chapter Text

Loid Forger, age 17 would have never guessed he would be in this position. Sitting in the back of a classroom staring out the window. School had always come easy to him. Being a literal genius does that. When applying for Edan academy his parents were assured that the school would ‘challenge all their students’ and ‘keep them engaged’ and ‘allow them to improve’. But all Loid has ever felt from this school is mind numbing boredom.

Now Loid has always been intelligent, concerningly so. After solving the sudoku, crossword, and all the other puzzles in the paper one day his parents knew that they had a problem. He was only 3 years old.

You see, there is a very small percentage of people who are born with unnatural abilities. So small in fact, the percentage is unknown. Some can fly, some have super speed, some can turn invisible. These are only a few examples of the amazing powers seen through the years.

Loid Forger has super intelligence. At least that's what he figures. Once he learns about something it just gets stored in the farthest corners of his brain, waiting for the opportunity to be of use. Ever since he could remember he has known far too much for someone of his age to know.

He is also a fast learner, well of course he would be. Give him a task and he’ll master it in an hour. Need something solved, he's the man to go to. He’s just naturally good at everything he does. School, sports, you name it he's got a plan.

This brings us to the present.

‘School would be so much better if I could just study on my own. Everything this man brings up is child's play.’ Loid can't help but think.

“Forger, you seem to be relaxed for someone who should be doing some calculations. Perhaps you should enlighten us with your answers, hum?” His teacher questions trying to catch Loid off guard.

Unfortunately for him, Loid already knows the answer to all of the questions drawn up on the board.

“Answer one is X2+5x+ 6. Answer two is 2m+14, and the final answer is 4-76. ” Loid says without missing a beat. With that the class erupts whispers.

“Woah, what did he say one was?”

“I didn’t even get to question two yet.”

“Wish I could be that good at math.”

“Alright. That's enough! Forger, at least pretend to pay attention.” The teacher demands of him.

Loid sighs, yet another boring day.

If he could just speak out about having this intelligence, then maybe he would be in a place that would actually be somewhat enguaging. You see, powers have been banned from use. The government has enforced the non-use of these powers. If you’re caught using them you may be punished.

Like no one will ever see you again punished.

Something about some superhero back in the day saving someone who didn’t want to be saved. The hero got sued and went into hiding. It’s kind of incredible that the guy won the court case.

Thus is why Loid is stuck in a class that is for the gifted, but unfortunately not as gifted as he.

After what feels like hours the bell chimes signaling lunch.

‘Finally, I can get out of this chair.’ Loid moves quickly down the halls, his destination of choice being the cafeteria.

In the far corner he sees his group of friends sitting at their normal table. However, one particular head of silky black hair was missing. Heading over he decides she might just be running late.

“Good day Loid. How were your classes?” Slyvia had teasingly asked, already knowing his answer.

“Agonizingly slow and boring as usual.”

“Wow how exciting, so as I was saying if I could just get my hands on some more-” Frankie continued on about whatever project he was working on, unbothered by Loid joining them for lunch.

Their small friend group consisted of 5 people himself, Sylvia, Frankie, Fiona, and Yor. However Yor was currently absent from the table.

Excluding Yor, the group have been friends since they were basically babies. Yor had joined the group a year or two after they all started at Eden academy.

After having heard enough of Frankies rant, Loid decides to ask where Yor was. He was sure she was in their first class. ‘Did she go home?’

“So where's Yor?”

“She decided to eat with the ‘mean girls’ today. It would seem like they've been very demanding of her these past couple days.” Fiona answered.

“Why? You worried about her or something?” Frankie questioned obnoxiously with a grin.

“Don’t be stupid. She didn’t tell me she wasn’t sitting with us today.” Loid grumbled.

“Oh Loid, I didn’t know she needed your permission.” Slyvia teases.

Loid sighs, he knows not to engage with their teasing. So he lets it go. Slyvia starts talking about how her parents are forcing her to make her decision about what college she wants to go to. Loid pulls his phone out of his pocket.

Hey where r u?

Waiting for her answer he gets antsy. He knows the group of girls Yor sometimes hangs around can be pretty vicious. He still doesn’t know why she wants anything to do with them.

Camilla, Mille, and Sharon are some of the worst people in this school in his opinion. Millie and Sharon really aren't too bad but the fact that they follow Camillas lead just goes to show you who they truly are.

Yor is a sweet and kind soul that really is too good for, well, anyone in this school. Ever since the fateful day they met, Loid knew that she was someone that needed to be protected.

Not to say she couldn't defend herself, physically, that is. He knows that first hand. When they had first met Loid had gotten into a scrap with some older boy who was picking on him for his perfect grades. He knew they were jealous but he wasn’t going to let them walk all over him.

Although Loid can handle himself now. First grader Loid had no chance against three third graders. Needless to say he was pushed around alot.

Enter Yor, Loid was on the ground getting kicked and punched when suddenly everyone was pulled off of him. When he looked, two big red eyes looked back at him.

“Are you okay?” She asked, concerned.

“Now I am.” He answered.

Now, Loid is no fool; he understands when he feels admiration. How could he not feel appreciation, and respect for Yor when she had saved him.

Whatever Frankie said about a crush or liking her is ridiculous.

Oh Sorry! I forget to tell u

I’m with the girls today!

They said they missed me!

Of course they missed her. More like they miss making her do their bidding. He needs to find some ways to make her realize they're no good for her.

“Who are you texting, lover boy?” Frankie slides up next to him.

“No one, I’m going to the library. I have studying I need to do.” Loid stands and grabs his tray. Turning towards the front to leave.

“Yeah right, we all know where you're headed.” Slyvia mumbled under her breath so only Frankie and Fiona could hear. Frankie laughs, while Fiona watches him go.

Chapter Text

Leaving the cafeteria Loid makes his way to the Library. He decides to go the long way.

‘I could use the walk, I just ate after all.’ Loid convinced himself.

On his way he sees a certain trio sitting in the courtyard. Camilla, Mille, and Sharon all giggling away at something Camilla said.

No Yor.

Knowing they must have made her go somewhere or do something, Loid decides to intervene. He can’t let Yor run around doing god knows what for them. Especially not after they embarrassed her in front of their entire class just last week.

Quickening his pace down the hall, Loid makes a few stops thinking he might know where Yor would be. Mille loves a drink that is only in one vending machine on the other side of eden.

She wasn’t there.

Maybe she had to photocopy something in the student lounge for Sharon.

Nope not there either.

Perhaps she went-

Just then his phone went off. It was from Yor.

Rooftop.

Loid couldn’t help but curse those damn girls. When Yor went to the rooftop it was for one thing only. She was upset, and not the angry kind of upset. Making his way to the steps that lead to the rooftop he wanted to slap himself.

‘Why didn’t I check here first?’

Finally reaching the top he flung open the door and made his way over to her little hiding spot. She was sitting down with her face down covered by her arms. She wiped her face with her sleeve. He plopped himself down right next to her.

“Hey.” he starts gently.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to take you away from everyone.” She says looking over at him. Her eyes shining with unshed tears.

“I was actually looking for you. I was on my way to the library and noticed you weren't with the girls.” He counters.

“Oh, thank you. I just needed someone to sit with for a bit.”

“I’m here now, i'll stay till you want me to go.”

“You always know what to say.” She smiles.

This is exactly what he was looking for. Whenever she asks him to come to the rooftop he makes it his goal to make her smile at least once before they both leave.

They chat for a bit, more smiles and laughs are shared before the bell goes off. Lunch is over and it's time to get to class. Of course he walks her to her class, not minding if he's late to his.

He knows all the material anyway.

At the end of the day Loid waits at the front gate. Frankie had already taken off for his after school job. Fiona and Sylvia both had after school activities so it is just him and Yor today. Fiona plays tennis, while Sylvia is part of the student council.

The group usually goes out every Wednesday but everyone was busy yesterday. So they decided for the next day, only for the three to have last minute excuses for them not to go. Frankie never worked on Wednesday, and Tennis season just ended! Sylvia always gets called away for student council so that's nothing new.

Either ways this is a good opportunity for Loid to talk to Yor about getting away from Camillas trio. He would just have to bring it up gently, knowing Yor she might try to defend them.

“Loid!” He hears a familiar voice yell. Turning around to greet her he freezes.

Walking next to her is her little brother, Yuri.

“Loid I hope you don’t mind but I have to walk Yuri home first!” She says, worry evident in her voice.

“Of course not Yor, we have to make sure the little guy gets home safe. Isn’t that right Yuri?” Loid says putting on an extra amount of cheer in his voice.

“Sis, can’t you hang out with me instead? I don’t want you catching stupid from him.” Yuri begs his sister.

“Yuri, that's not very nice. I promised Loid I could hang out with him today. But you and I can spend some time together tomorrow! Come on you two, let's get going!” Yor starts walking the opposite way Loid was hoping they could go. He wanted them to try that new coffee place that also serves tea and dessert.

Sighing in defeat, Loid follows behind them. Yuri, holding Yors hand, looks back at Loid and gives him a glare. Loid and Yuri have a very unique relationship. That is- the hatred between them.

From the time Yuri was born 6 and a half years ago to right now Yuri has done nothing but show Loid his teeth.

Loid knows it's because of his sister. Yuri loves his sister, Loid doesn’t blame him. Loid thinks that Yor deserves all the love she gets. However, Yuris love for his sister also creates the problem at hand. The jealousy Yuri has.

He used to try and get Yuri to like him but now, he thinks it's so funny to watch Yuri beg for his sister's attention whenever he is around.

‘Heh that's right Yuri, your beloved sister wants to be with me. Not you.’ Pulling himself out of his head he asks.

“So what did you want to do today?”

“Oh, I wasn't sure. I was just gonna let you decide.”

“Okay, well there's this coffee house that just opened. Want to try that?” He tried.

“Oh yeah I heard about that one on South Street right?”

“Yeah that's the one.”

“WHY CAN’T I GO TO SIS!?” Yuri screamed, crocodile tears welling up in his eyes.

“Yuri! Don’t scream! You're gonna bother people.” Correcting her brother, she started to apologize.

“Do you not love me enough to take me too? Do you love LoiLoi more?” Loid knows where this is going.

“WHAT!? LOVE!? Yuri, of course I love you, it's not about that!” Yor had started to blush but moved on quickly. Yor looked over at him uncertain of what to do next. Loid could tell she was about to surrender to her brother's cries.

“Umm Yor, if you want we can take Yuri.” Loid says not really meaning it. He knows that if something doesn’t give it’ll only get worse for her. So he tries to compromise.

“NO! I mean, Yuri, I'm going out with Loid this afternoon. You need to go home and start studying for midterms anyway!” Yor argues.

“YOU’RE GOING OUT WITH HIM?” He questions. Yor, only now realizing what she said, starts to stammer.

“W-what? No I-I meant-I mean.” Blushing a deep scarlet Yor grabs Yuri's arm and dragged him the next three blocks and up into their house.

Loid huffs out a laugh. Those two really are something else. Loid continues towards the house. Waiting a bit while she talks with Yuri.

Yor likes to get out of her uniform whenever she can so she will most likely be a little bit.

Not too much later Yor finally comes out the front door. Yuri moves the curtain out of the window and makes a threatening hand signal at Loid.

Yor walks up next to him.

“Sorry about that, Umm thanks for coming with us. I know Yuri is kind of hard to get along with.” Yor apologies.

“Don’t worry Yor, he's only 6. It’s kind of amusing though so it's no big deal.”

“Then shall we?”

“Lets.”

Notes:

Did you like Yuri? He's kinda fun to write. I think he could probably get away with a lot more being a child. What do you thinks gonna happen next?
Also please let me know what you think!

Chapter 3

Notes:

Sorry it's taken this long to get this chapter out! I've been trying to finish the last chapter before posting this.
I would also like to point out something a few people pointed out last chapter. In cannon Yor and Yuri are 7 years apart. In this story they are 10 years apart. Making Yor 16 years old, as well as Loid. I just wanted to point this out incase anyone was concerned about that. I'm not gonna go back and change in since its not really relvant to the story, but thank you for pointing it out for me cause it allows me to realize my mistake for next time.
So without further ado, Here is the chapter!
I hope you enjoy it!

Chapter Text

Loid and Yor enjoy their time at the coffee house. They sat at a little table in the corner of the cafe. The two always enjoyed their time together, whether it be just the two of them or the whole group.

“So how is the coffee? Is it bitter enough for you?” Yor asks jokingly. Loid is known for taking his coffee black. He insists that it helps him wake up faster.

“It might be the best tasting coffee I've had. We’ll have to come here again. What about your tea? Is it any good?” Loid questioned.

“I’m enjoying it, so we definitely should come back! Oh I forgot to tell  you about-”

Loid listened intently to what Yor was saying. Head in his hand he couldn’t help but smile. ‘She's so animated when she talks, the way her eyes light up and how her hair sways is just so cute.’ Realizing he'd gotten stuck in his head, Loid joins the conversation.

After about an hour they decide to leave the coffee house and walk for a bit. It was starting to get dark out early now that the season was changing to winter. Walking by a playground they stop. There was a group of kids leaving.

“Wanna sit on the swings for a bit?” Yor asks.

“Why not.” Loid says heading towards the swing set.

The two laugh and bicker with each other. Nothing really important is discussed between the two but it's the time shared that they really care about.

After a while Loid glances at the time. It’s 8:30.

“Geez, I didn’t mean to stay out this late, come on Yor let's  get going.” Loid says standing from his swing.

“What are you scared of the dark now? I didn’t think Loid Forger was scared of anything.” Yor jokes.

“Come on, you know that's not true. It's just we should get in our neighborhood before, well you know, thugs try to rob us.”

“Oh please, you know I can handle anything thrown at us. Plus haven’t those vigilanties been running around lately?” Yor counters.

“Yeah Yeah, well I’m not trying to meet any of them tonight. I mean they're breaking the law too technically.” Loid thinks out loud.

Yor goes quiet. Loid drops the subject while they start their journey back to Yor’s house.

Turning onto a less used street, Loid notices a mother and child across from them. The child seems to be fussy. The mother struggles to hold onto the little boy.

‘Why is he struggling so badly? Doesn’t he know that running away from your parents is dangerous. Well of course not Loid, he's still little he doesn’t understand yet.’ Loid’s mind rambles.

With a loud screech a car comes flying around the corner. The mother, shocked from the noise, gets distracted and loses her grip. The child breaks free and charges into the street. Right in the car's path.

Loid cannot believe what he sees. It’s like his whole life is moving in slow motion. Is he really about to witness a child get hit? It was times like these where Loid wishes he had gotten super speed instead of super intelligence. Over Analyzing every possible outcome in agonizing detail.

‘What if I tried this? What if I pushed him? What if-What if-What if-’ Loid couldn’t find any way to save both the child and himself. He is frozen in his spot.

Suddenly out of the corner of his eye he saw Yor push herself forward. Running into the street and pushing the child out of the way Loid was shocked. His best friend was about to be hit by a car.

But what happened next shook him.

Yor braced herself, planting her feet sturdy on the ground and getting low enough so that her arms were the same height as the car's hood. She reaches her arms in front of her and the car crashes into her.

The hood of the car crumbles, metal bending like paper. The car's momentum brings the middle and back of the car into the air for a short few seconds. Then it crashes down, the car stops.

Yor is still standing there. Feet pushed into the ground creating two small craters. But otherwise she looks unscathed.

The woman, the child, and Loid did not move, and they cannot speak. What did they just witness? They couldn’t believe the girl was still there, alive and standing.

Yor looks at the palms of her hands. Then realizes the mistake she made. She quickly turns towards Loid then the woman and child.

“I-I Umm I-”

The car's driver side door opens and a man steps out of the car.

“Are you fucking kidding me? My car! It's wrecked! You did this to my car! You’re a super!?” The man starts yelling angrily.

Yor looks over again at Loid, panic and fear reflected in her eyes. He does not move, still trying to process what is happening in front of him.

‘She has powers?’

The woman cuts the yelling man off arguing that the girl saved her child. The child begins to cry and the street is filled with overbearing screams. Loid is confused and overwhelmed.

“I’ve had enough I’m callin the cops!” the man said, reaching for his phone somewhere in the vehicle.

Yor decides then is the time to bolt. Running down the street, Yor turns down an alleyway.

“WAIT!” Loid finally manages to get himself in gear. Sprinting after her he can barely keep up.

‘I can’t believe this. She’s like me? She has powers? Is she okay? It seemed like she was okay afterwards but she must be shaken. She's probably panicking.’ Although he’s worried about her, it doesn’t stop the happiness flowing through his body.

There's finally someone he can talk to about powers. He can share his secret with someone. After all these years of not having a person to talk with he finds them. She just happened to be right under his nose.

After following her and calling after her, Loid finally catches up. Although it's only because she had slowed down and then stopped.

Yor turns to him with tears in her eyes. She tries to glance at her hands discreetly and hide them behind herself but Loid grabs them. Her palms are split and bleeding from the car's impact. They don't seem too bad, but they need to be taken care of.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this!’ Yor starts to sob.

He pulls her into a hug. She's crying so hard he can tell that this is something that has been bothering her for awhile.

‘She was going to tell me?’

When she settles down a bit Loid moves her a bit out of his arms so he can look at her in the eyes.

“It’s okay. Are you alright? Are you hurt anywhere else?” Loid questions.

“No I-I’m okay. My hands hurt but that's fixable. Are you okay? We were running for a long time. I wasn’t trying to get away from you but we needed to get away from there.” Yor starts rambling.

“I’m fine and I know, it's okay.”

“Are- Are you mad?” Yor timidly looks up at him.

“Why would I be mad? You just saved someone! I’m- I can’t believe it. Loid starts. “So you have powers? What exactly is your power?”

“I-I-… yeah, my power is strength. I can fight really well and I know how to use a few weapons too.” She says trailing off at the end.

“Yeah powers are weird like that aren't they. Seeming to be one thing then having the ability to also do other stuff too, heh.” Loid laughs to himself.

Yor looks at him, confusion written all over her face.

“How do you know about that?”

“Well I know pretty well considering I have powers too.” He smiles and gives her a wink.

Yor can only look up at him in shock. Then her eyes begin to water again.

“What- what did I say? Did I upset you?” Loid asks quickly, worried that he caused her to cry.

“I’m just, I’m so relieved that you aren’t upset with me. I’m so happy! You, I,-” Yor stutters herself into another cry.

Loid sighs and pulls her in for another hug.

He guesses they have quite a bit to talk about.
