I'll Follow You Into The Dark

Summary:

Genshin Asougi sits alone in his cell. He thinks back to how it has all come down to this.

Notes:

This is my first published fic. It's short, but I enjoyed writing it. This snippet is based on the wonderful art entitled "shadow play" by wyrtig on tumblr, specifically referencing the last panel.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The blade had thrust too cleanly straight through Klint for Genshin's liking.

In a way, Genshin knew he would follow Klint soon after to the grave. While he was heartbroken that he would never see Kazuma again, he knew that his own death being so soon after Klint's could only be called fate.

As he sat in his cell, his mind flicked through memories and the sensations they brought. He wondered about his son, and what he would do when he found the will, cleverly hidden in the head of Karuma. He thought of Barok, who looked at him with an icy stare as he was condemned to the gallows. He thought of Mikotoba, who promised that he would ensure the safety of Klint's other remaining link to the mortal world.

And most of all, he thought about Klint's last words to him, as blood seeped from his mouth and Genshin felt warm tears drip down his chin.

Klint had smiled a weary smile, cupping Genshin's face. Genshin had leaned into the touch, savoring the last bit of affection he would ever receive from Klint.

"Don't forget about me, Genshin."

"How could I?"
