Captain Tosen teaches him fear, as an essential part of his training. Those are the lessons that Shuhei will never be able to forget, that he will never allow himself to forget. He knows just how necessary they all were, knows how necessary everything that he shared with Captain Tosen is, when it comes to his development into the man he is today.
There was another type of fear he learned, though, one that he doesn’t think his captain intended. The fear of his own feelings, of what they meant for him, and how it is to lose the source.
