Work Text:
Soft light trickled into the room through the slight slits of the white blinds, forcing the once dark room to join the rest of the country in waking up for the day.
Mafuyu’s face scrunched slightly, having been facing said window, her eyes shutting tighter as she rolled to give it her back; resisting the urge to pull the blanket up over her head.
Shuffling over, she moved herself closer to the other party she was sharing the bed with. Kanade lay next to her, on her stomach; face turned towards Mafuyu’s as she snores quietly.
Purple orbs blinked open; and she gave a gentle sigh. Mafuyu wrapped her arms around Kanade and pulled her close, pressing a kiss to her cheek. She found it hard to express this love to Kanade when she was awake, so she could only hope that she would be able to appreciate it now.
Rolling back towards the dreaded sun, Mafuyu picked up her phone; squinting slightly as she read the time.
6:03am.
It was early, but Mafuyu was usually an early riser. Unlike Kanade, she went to bed late but always woke up early; rather than staying up all night and sleeping all day. It always left her in a state of feeling perpetually exhausted, though, but Mafuyu wouldn’t change it for a thing.
If she slept too early, she would never get to chat with Ena and Mizuki, and if she woke up too late she wouldn’t be able to cram for her exams before school.
It would be a lose-lose situation.
Mafuyu sat up, stretching; brushing some hair from her face as she gave a soft yawn. She carefully moved as to not wake her girlfriend.
The pair had been dating for a while, now; just a few months really, but it felt like longer. It was a secret, though. Only the other members of their group new (and Emu, but that was a total accident). It was the only way Mafuyu would be able to stay over with Kanade without arising suspicions from her mother. As long as her studying was done, the woman couldn’t care less what her daughter was doing.
As long as it wasn’t disappointing her.
But alas, Mafuyu knew that if she knew the truth, she would be oh so very disappointed with her ‘perfect’ daughter.
Pulling the blanket further up over Kanade, Mafuyu rummaged in her overnight bag she had brought. She carefully set out her uniform for school that day on the floor for a moment as she grabbed her toothbrush, soon leaving with her clothes for the bathroom.
She showered, and got dressed; teeth brushed and hair tied back perfectly. Make up covered the dark bags that usually sat under her eyes that only she knew were there. She looked perfect, as always.
Upon entering Kanade’s room once more, she glanced at the clock on her phone. It had just turned half six. She had about an hour or so before she needed to start making some sort of effort to leave for school so, she did as she always did.
Mafuyu picked up her bag, and sat on the bed; leaning against the headboard. While Kanade slept, Mafuyu read her textbook back to front. She forced as much information as she could into her brain; and it ached. Such useless information.
As she flipped a page, Mafuyu felt a gentle tug on her sleeve. She glanced, momentarily relaxing her mind as her eyes locked with Kanade’s sleepy ones. Her eyes were sunken, a dull blue, and she gave a soft yawn. Her hand kept its loose hold onto Mafuyu’s sleeve.
“Good morning.” Mafuyu said, smiling slightly.
“It’s too early for you to be awake…” Kanade mumbled, rolling so she could bury her face into the side of Mafuyu’s hip. The sunlight burned. It really was too early.
“I have to leave for school soon, K.” Despite their relationship, the nickname stuck.
“I know…” Mumbled. The grip tightened slightly. “I just wish you could stay a little longer.”
Mafuyu hummed, putting the book down to the side. She shuffled down the bed, not caring that it would mess up her perfect uniform.
Their eyes met, and Kanade blinked; confused.
Mafuyu gave a very small, short smile; and kissed the girl on her forehead.
“I would stay if I could, you know.” She spoke, secretly revelling in the way Kanade’s cheeks would turn crimson from the simple kiss. “I have archery after class today, so we can maybe call tonight?”
Kanade frowned, pouting slightly before giving a bit of a nod.
“Of course. I understand.” Her voice was quiet, nose scrunching a little.
Mafuyu gave a soft sigh, brushing a strand of hair from the others face. “We have plans this weekend, remember? So we’ll see each other then. I promise.”
“I know.” Small smile. “I look forward to it.”
“Yeah. Me too.” She wasn’t sure how she felt. Emotions were hard for Mafuyu. Very, very hard. She knew she probably was excited, but she couldn’t actually feel that excitement.
Life was hard.
Before Kanade could get another word in, Mafuyu’s phone beeped. It was time to go.
Sighing, Mafuyu got up; straightening out her uniform. Perfect once more.
“I’ll text you at lunch, okay?” Mafuyu said, slipping her back over her shoulder after putting on her jacket.
“I’ll try to be awake-“ Kanade rolled, watching the girl walk towards the door. “I’m going to look over the files Ena sent over later.”
Mafuyu nodding, not really listening. Internally, she was worrying about being late. She couldn’t ruin her perfect attendance, and Kanade’s house was a different distance from the school that hers was. She wasn’t sure how long it would take her to even get to school.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll- yes. Talk to you later.” Mafuyu was about to leave, before she stopped herself.
Quickly, as if on autopilot, she turned on her heel, walked back to the bed; and kissed Kanade’s forehead once more. Without a word, she then left; leaving a very flustered and confused Kanade behind.
