Chapter Text
At first, today had been entirely normal. I woke up late and made myself some of my favorite breakfast. An extra plate had been prepared in case my favorite monkey king arrived. Ever since we started hanging out, it has been a normal routine to make extra food for him. His favorite foods all related somehow around peaches, which made it easy to decide what to make for him. I met Wukong a few months ago when MK found out he would be his successor, at first, I was against the idea because I didn’t want MK to be in danger. After the first few meetings, Wukong began to warm up to me. We had a heart to heart about MK and since then we’ve been closer than ever.
Wukong has always been a person I can confide in; tell all my deepest secrets and he would understand me. We're kinda like trauma buddies in a sense.
I hear a sequence of knocks on the door and head over to open it, expecting Wukong. Instead of there being a familiar light furred monkey, I’m met face to face with darker fur and a sharp toothed smirk. The monkey leans against my doorframe, looking down on me from his sheer height. Confusion strikes me immediately.
“Heyyyy, so I know this is very sudden but I’m going to need your cooperation for my plan to work.”, he says. Without warning he pounces towards me and all I can do is stand still like a dumbass. I jump out of the way last second but one of his sharpened nails still grazes my skin, drawing a bead of blood. I shout,” WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? Are you like an evil version of Wukong?!?” He lets out a frustrating snarl at those last words. Seems he doesn't like being compared to the Monkey King... who the hell even is this guy.
“My name’s Macaque. I seriously can’t believe he never told anyone about me. Even someone as important to him as you...”, he growls out and changes his stance to jump at me again. “Okay, well Mac…acok? First thing you need to learn is that attacking strangers is bad. Second is now I’m going to run for my life.”, are the last words I say before I bolt past him and run out into the street. This was probably one of the most idiotic things I could do in this situation, but I've already decided to do it so, oh well.
‘ Alright, I just need to head somewhere highly populated, and I’ll be safe. Oh, shit wait, where’s my phone? Did I seriously leave behind the most important thing…’ I have no time to look behind me before my body is slammed to the ground harshly.
My face scrapes itself against the pavement as Macaque presses himself onto my back, his weight preventing me from moving. I struggle around, trying to somehow kick Macaque off of me but it’s of no use. “Look, your buddy Wukong and I got into a little fight earlier and I lost. I happened to overhear from his little apprentice that you had quite the relationship with him. So here I am.”, He chuckles to himself before shadow hands burst out of the concrete to hold me in place. The shadows felt cold and lifeless, almost a bit like mist.
Macaque stands up and instructs the hands to pull me into a dark alleyway nearby, away from anywhere someone could see us.
‘For fucks sake if this is where I die… I hope my funeral is cool.’ “So, either you tell me some of your dear Wukong’s weaknesses or I make you tell me.”, are the words that come out of Macaque's mouth as he presses a sharpened claw against my throat. He applies a bit of pressure so a bead of blood drips down. I wrack my brain for any ideas of a weakness before realizing it was hopeless, I'm never good dealing with life or death situations.
I poorly attempt to save myself by saying,” Probably his ego?” The shadows press down on me with enough force to definitely leave bruises. Macaque stares at me with a blank face before bursting out into deranged laughter. “Are you kidding me? You’re on the brink of death here, I could kill you at any moment, and you tell me his weakness is HIS EGO? Honey I’ve been buddy buddy with him for a while and I already know that. You have to have SOMETHING-” Before he can finish his sentence, he is flung into a nearby wall by a golden blur. A growl rips through the air from a familiar monkey king.
“Oh seems like someone’s mad~”, Macaque taunts after pulling himself out of the monkey sized crater. Wukong appears in front of me, clearly fuming. The shadows holding onto me tightly retreat back into the wall and back to Macaque. “What did you do to them, Macaque!”,Wukong shouts with venom. I stumble towards Wukong, feeling the blood start flowing through my arms again. “What did I do to them? Guess.”, Macaque smirks towards the Monkey king. As Wukong charges towards him, a shadow portal appears below Macaque’s feet, and he falls in right before they make contact.
A crater is left where Macaque was previously standing. Wukong shouts frustratedly before remembering I was still standing awkwardly watching the whole ordeal happen. He rushes over and gently holds my face, looking for scratching or bruises. A frown appears after he sees the indent on my throat. “Are you okay? Did he do anything? I should have realized he would do something like this after he tried to hurt MK…”, He mutters. “He hurt MK?!?” I shout and pull his hand off my face. Wukong looks at me and nods before leading me out of the alleyway. He sighs and seems to go deep in thought. My legs still feel like pins and needles as I walk so, I cling onto him a little bit. My blood's circulation through my body finally seems to return to normal. Before long, we arrive at the door of my apartment.
“So…”, Wukong sighs “you alright? You never answered if he hurt you.” I open the door and he follows behind me. “I’m fine Wukong, just a bit shaken up. Do you think you could stay here a little while? I’m scared he might come back.”, I mutter and turn on all my lights, checking that my door is locked. Wukong settles on my couch, and he flicks on the TV so we aren’t stuck in uncomfortable silence. Being in dangerous situations was now a pretty normal occurrence. Demons who wanted to hurt Monkey King usually tried to hurt him through you. Wukong set up protective seals around the apartment, but more powerful demons were still able to enter without harm.
“Is MK alright? Could you explain what happened that lead up to this?”, I ask, sitting next to Wukong on my couch. His tail wraps around my arm as he begins to tell me the story. “I needed to pay more attention to MK, it’s all my fault he went to Macaque for more training. I didn’t even notice this was happening until it was too late, and he was already hurt. Macaque was using him to get to me.” “I’m going to stop you right there Wukong, you didn’t know it was going to happen.”, I look him in the eyes and poke him. “Yeah yeah, but I should have been a bit less… lazy.
It’s all my fault you got into any of this mess. I would never be able to forgive myself if you ever got hurt. I can’t believe Macaque stooped so low as to target you as well.”” We sit in a bit more silence before he continues, "What did he want you to tell him?” The tail looping around my wrist tightens a little bit. “He just wanted to know if you had any weaknesses. I guess MK mentioned I hung around you a lot, so I was the go-to for info on you.”, I respond, leaning into him. Wukong seems to go deep in thought as he stares forward at the TV. His tail tightens even more on my wrist before I have to nudge him out of his thoughts.
“Sorry… I just hate knowing you were anywhere near him.” Wukong mutters. ‘He definitely needs a break’ “How about we watch a movie? Those always help me when I’m trying to feel better. Do you have any you’d like to watch Wukong?” He takes a moment to think before muttering a movie request under his breath.
I turn on the movie and grab a few snacks for us while we watch it. We sit a bit closer to each other and as the movie ends and the credits role, Wukong’s eyes begin to close, and his head begins to droop. “We need to get you to bed… today’s been a long day for both of us.”, I whisper and lead him to my room.
“You sure I can have your bed? I can just fly home if you need.”, Wukong mumbles with a yawn as he sits down on my bed. Right before I leave, he tugs on my sleeve and pulls me into bed with him. A blush covers my face, but Wukong seems totally oblivious to it when he says, "I don’t think it’s fair for me to take your bed. We can share.”
Today has been so tiring, I don't even bat an eye as I slowly fall asleep. Before darkness finally takes hold of me, I feel a tail wrap around my waist and Wukong nuzzling his head between my shoulders. A small purr begins to emanate from him as a smile forms on my lips.

A shadow looms over the two, taking in the scene and chuckling to himself ,"It seems his weakness was in plain sight all along."
