Chapter 1: i wish i knew

Chapter Text

going on nightly grocery runs was always a regular thing max did with her friends. they had run out of the snacks they bought two days ago because eddie started stress eating. now they needed to get double what they got last time. robin, steve, and eddie lead the way since they're the oldest of the group. they walked into bradley's big buy and walked over to the carts. robin hopped in, and eddie got in next to her. steve rolled his eyes and started pushing the cart towards the fruit.

max and lucas started grabbing cartons of strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries.

"ew, put the blackberries back! you know i don't like the texture." robin exclaimed, scrunching her nose up in disgust.

"well steve and i like it so it's staying." lucas shot back, giving the older girl a smile. max continued to look at the fruits, wondering which one to grab next. the last time they bought honeydew only robin ate it, and the last time they bought grapes no one ate them. the sound of footsteps was heard behind them, but they didn't care. might've just been some normal everyday people.

"honeydew?" max asked, picking up the container, turning to face her friends.

"yes!"

"no, i don't the way it sinks into my fangs." steve said, making a face. robin rolled her eyes and grabbed the fruit from the redhead.

they heard muttering behind them. lucas looked behind his friends to see a group of people. one who looked around robin's age, and the other four looked around max and lucas' age. he took special notice of a boy with curly hair, wearing a hat. he was shorter than lucas, and he was wearing a white shirt with a blue jacket. as he continued to look at the boy, he noticed something else. a wand sticking out of his back pocket. fuck. the curly haired boy made eye contact with lucas and smiled. without thinking, the boy smiled back. now he was really fucked.

"shit shit shit."

"you good sinclair?" eddie asked, fiddling with his rings. lucas tilted his head toward the presumable group of witches and wizards behind him. steve took quick notice of the wand, and motioned for everyone to move.

"stop right there." a voice spoke loudly from behind them.

they tensed up and steve, lucas, and max turned around. robin and eddie peeked at the person from behind steve, still in the cart.

"don't move. what are you doing here?" the oldest of their group asked, pointing her wand at them.

"we just came to get snacks..." lucas told her, a nervous smile appearing.

"are you lying?" a boy presumably his age asked, ganging up on him as well. he looked like the oldest girl. siblings maybe?

"no, i'm not, i swear!"

the girl reluctantly put her wand down, but still stared at them warily.

the curly haired boy that lucas had been looking at walked up to him. "you're a vampire? that's so cool!" he gave a big smile. lucas smiled back.

"thanks.. i'm lucas." he put his hand out for him to shake. the boy took it. "i'm dustin!"

a short haired brunette walked up to max. "pretty."

"what?"

"you. you are pretty."

"oh- thanks i guess. you're pretty too." the redhead shrugged, smiling a bit.

"i'm el."

"cool name. i'm max."

the black haired boy that asked lucas if he was lying was watching from behind dustin, a boy with brown hair and a bowlcut standing next to him. the older girl caught the eye of robin, who was still sitting in the cart. robin waved. the girl gave a small wave in return. she didn't seem very interested in talking to anyone. robin respected that. it was relatable. she struck up conversation with eddie and steve, as she rocked back and forth. soon enough steve tells everyone that they need to get going, and need to get more snacks. "can we come hang out with you after we're all finished shopping?" dustin asked eagerly.

the black haired boy looked at his friend. "dustin!"

"mike." the boy with the bowlcut said, putting his hand on mike's shoulder. "be nice." mike melted at the touch. "okay will."

"uh, sure kid. if it's alright with um-" steve looked at the oldest girl on their side.

"nancy." she responded. "it's fine i guess. we don't have anything to do anyways."

"okay then! we'll meet outside of the store, yeah?"

nancy nodded. she started to walk away, mike following her. will gave a small wave before running to catch up. dustin and el said their goodbyes to lucas and max and left to join their friends.

"we're about to hang out with witches and wizards." eddie stated in disbelief.

"holy shit."
