the best they'd ever seen

Summary:

Dalton Academy is caught in a game of Assassins where there can only be one winner. But is that always true?

Notes:

written for day 3 of Seblaine Week 2022: detective AU, and can I say it started off with a lot more detective elements before the cuteness took over??

also, idk how many people are familiar with the concept of Assassins, but it's pretty much a game where everyone receives a name of a "target" that they have to "assassinate" in different ways. when I played in my college dorm, it was by marking people's hands with markers (like in the story), but I've also seen with stickers, nerf guns, etc. it always makes me think of the book "prep" which was a lot less fun than this story. so hopefully, it makes sense, but if not, look up the game "Assassin", and hopefully it will!

also, title from John Mayer's "Assassin" (very creative today, I know)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Everything is quiet at Dalton Academy.  Until suddenly, “damn it!” rings out through the halls.

Another student down.

The entire school is currently engaged in a fierce game of Assassins, with the winner getting to take an entire week off school with no obligation to finish any homework/projects assigned during that week.

With Regionals coming up, most (if not, all) of the Warblers have their eyes on that prize.

But none moreso than the one that is currently yanking Blaine Anderson into a supply closet on the second floor.

He yelps suddenly, assuming he’s about to be the next victim of the game when the voice inside the darkened space demands hurriedly.

“Who do you have?”

“Nick Duval!” Blaine quickly pulls a small piece of paper out of his pocket to prove his intended target, hoping the mysterious figure inside the closet doesn’t have him.  The boy reaches up and turns on the individual lightbulb above them.

“Sebastian, what the hell are you doing? I almost had a heart attack.”

“You’re welcome,” Sebastian replies smugly, “It’s a cutthroat world in those halls, Anderson.  They could be looking to put your head on a spike as we speak.”

“Someone took Lord of the Flies a bit too literally,” Blaine mutters.

“Fine, you wanna go back out there?” Sebastian starts to lean forward, reaching for the doorknob.  Blaine smiles in spite of himself and hums quietly.

“I think I prefer it in here.”

He reaches up to turn out the light with one hand, as the other slips around Sebastian’s neck, guiding the taller boy’s lips down to his as they meet in the intimate darkness.  Sebastian hums happily, slipping his hands underneath Blaine’s blazer.  He guides his lips to the side of Blaine’s neck, trailing to behind his ear as Blaine laughs breathily.

“How long do you think this game is gonna go on for?”

Sebastian hums against his skin, and Blaine feels his knees practically turning to jelly.  “ Hours.  Maybe even days if we’re lucky.”

It’s almost as if his words have tempted fate because not a minute later, they hear feet moving down the hall, doors opening and familiar voices saying, “There’s only like 3 of us left in the game, they’ve gotta be around here somewhere!”  Blaine and Sebastian stay pressed together, but look at each other, frantic and almost certain they are about to be discovered.

And then, Sebastian has a plan.

“Come here,” he murmurs, sneaking himself and Blaine behind a few lost and found coats that a janitor clearly threw in there to never be found again.  He reaches into his pocket and pulls something else out that Blaine can’t quite make out before the door opens.

Standing there is Nick, and he looks around, clearly unable to see them as they hold their breath and stand as still as statues.  And then, before Blaine realizes what’s happening, Sebastian reaches out, leaving a quick slash on Nick’s hand.  While Nick is saying “what the fuck!”, Blaine feels a marker being placed into his hand, and a voice in his ear whispering “Congratulations, killer.”

Sebastian stands and Blaine follows, dumbfounded, with the marker in his hand.  Nick scoffs, “The couples double team, are you kidding me?  That’s gotta be against the rules.”

“Hand over your name, Duval, you’ve been assassinated.” Sebastian smirks, gesturing with his head in Blaine’s direction to indicate that Blaine is the one who did the deed.  Blaine is still shell-shocked, but is trying to act like he’s in on the plan at least somewhat, so he holds out his hand to receive the small piece of paper from an annoyed Nick.  And inside the paper reads: Sebastian Smythe.

“You two are the only ones left, everyone else has already been accounted for.  Jeff was helping me look for you, but Ms. Thomas said he wasn’t allowed so she made him go back to the auditorium.”

Blaine looks up at Sebastian in surprise.  “You had me the whole time?”

Sebastian pulls a little piece of paper out of his pocket and shrugs with a small smile.

Blaine Anderson

But then Blaine also notices something about the hand Sebastian used to pull the paper out of his pocket.

It’s already marked.

Sebastian looks down at his hand.  “I knew you would be too good to do it, so I did it for you.”

Nick throws his hands up in frustration.  “Okay, that is definitely against the rules!”

But Blaine is just grinning.  “Shut up, Nick, I need to kiss my boyfriend.”

After Nick reports them for cheating, he wins and gets to take the week off instead.  But as they both sit in class with those tiny slips of paper neatly tucked into their blazer pockets, neither of them find they mind having to spend those days together.
