Home Maintenance For the Modern Wizard

Summary:

There's a leak in Harry and Draco's roof. Draco sets out to repair it.

Notes:

Georgie's neighbor was getting some work done on their roof, and a whole group of us were on the edge of our seats for the play by play about the strange man doing it. And it led me to chaotically typing this directly into discord.

Draco's little rooftop diatribe against their neighbor is from the brilliant mind of phoebe_delia

Work Text:

There was a leak in the roof above their bedroom. It had started small, barely noticeable, just a bit of a brown smudge on the ceiling really. Then came a solid week of heavy rain and the brown smudge had grown, and then broken open slightly, and now the steady drip-drip-drip into the bucket in their bedroom was driving Draco spare.

"I'll call someone," Harry said.

"Absolutely not," Draco replied. There would be no strange grubby workmen stomping in and out of his house. Draco would do it himself.

Harry looked at Draco sceptically. "You know you can't use magic. We live in a muggle area. Mrs. Wilberforce already seems like she's on to us after the stunt you pulled at the barbeque."

"We do not speak of the barbeque," Draco said, sitting up straighter and sipping at his breakfast tea.

Harry was going to be late for work if he didn't leave, so he sighed and kissed Draco on the cheek before flooing away.

When Harry returned home that evening, there was no sign of Draco. No note, nor evidence that Draco had been in the house for several hours at all. Harry went to the bedroom to change out of his work robes and heard a thump come from the roof. He looked up and paused, waiting to see if it would happen again. After a minute of silence, he finished changing and went to the en suite to splash some water on his face. The thumping started again, this time steady and loud. Harry frowned up at the ceiling. He went to the bedroom window, opened it, and carefully stuck his head out to see if he could catch a glimpse of what was causing the thumping. He caught a flash of blonde and then heard:

“Mrs. Wilberforce, as you can see I am trying to complete routine maintenance on my home. So if you would please keep your menthol-smelling, Chico’s-wearing arse out of my business it would be much appreciated.”

Harry hurriedly pulled his head back in through the window and all but ran outside.

By the time Harry made it out their front door, Mrs. Wilberforce was gone already, thank Merlin. Probably scurried back to her side of the street with her small, annoying dog in tow. But she'd likely be watching through her curtains.

"What are you doing up there?" Harry demanded.

Draco's face peered over the edge, looking halfway between harassed and relieved. "I told you I was going to fix this leak," he said smugly. "I got some supplies and had it patched by lunchtime."

"Then what are you still doing up there?" Harry asked.

The smugness faded from Draco's face and he reluctantly admitted, "The ladder door closed and locked me out. I've been stuck up here for hours! Get me down, Potter."

Harry sighed and went back inside to fetch his husband. Once Draco had cleaned up and they were having dinner, Harry asked him, "So it's all fixed then?"

Draco glared at him witheringly. "Of course it is, Potter. I consulted Home Maintenance for the Modern Wizard. They include chapters on muggle repairs in the expanded editions these days."

Harry smiled at Draco and went back to eating.

There was a rainstorm that night. The steady drip-drip-drip had turned into a chorus of them. Harry turned to look at Draco in bed.

"I'll call someone," Draco said and Harry kissed the back of his neck and went to sleep.
