For Marie
Who didn't have a maglor

Marie appeared in cow camp One day riding a spotted pony.
Like some mixed blood she was tan and her eyes pea green and her hair dark red.
She asked for a job. Told us she couldn't find work in town.
We said ok. She could watch the remuda and keep camp as a start.
But we noticed she had a bruise on her cheek.
Marie worked hard but being young she fell in love with maglor.
Really how could you not? Old mag was easily the most handsome person any of us had ever seen. But in an exotic way. With his dark hair that waved down his back and intensely bright grey eyes his soft glance alone would just about melt anyone. He couldn't help it. Just the way he was.
We all knew that mag knew that the young girl was in Iove with him. And he sometimes wore a secret smile when he noticed her steal a glance at him.
But he never acted untoward. Never encouraged her. He was friendly and sweet. But in the way of an uncle.
But then one day Robert appeared.
Marie's father.
He was angry she wasn't at home and yelled and complained so much about Marie getting back home that terri stood up and walked over to him and told him to shut his mouth as he was disturbing the cattle.
But Marie put down the pan biscuits she was making and jumped up on her pony and followed him out of camp.
Maglor looked up and watched them go.
Then about ten minutes later mag caught his horse and trailed after them.
The boys all looked at one another. Saddled up and followed. Leaving lane and Dan to watch the cattle.
Soon we all arrived at Marie's family homestead and mag was standing outside the cabin door. We all heard a soft thump.
Maglor opened the door and stepped quietly inside.
The thump he had heard was Marie getting hurled to the floor and crouching over her was Robert hand raised to slap her. He Held her flowered shirt collar and his face was twisted in anger.
Marie wore an expression of such hurt incredulity that it shook maglor to his core.
Her expression saying to all the world how can this happen to me?
Maglor then said something in a strange language
Tye vamme a ontáro
then added in english,
Man, look at me
Robert looked up and his anger grew cool.
He had never met maglor but he saw now something strange and dangerous. We did too. And all of us took a step back but terri.
Maglor then told robert.
Let her go or I will sing a song that will turn you inside out.
I guess Robert believed him for he loosened his hold on Marie and stood up.
The girl got to her feet and was drawn into maglor's chest by his protective left arm.
He whispered to her, ' close your eyes…'
But then behind mag in the doorway stepped the Kelly hill boys and Terri Mika.
Terri could feel some uncanny deep power wheeling up from malor, mag took a soft breath and Robert fell on his knees before them
'Don't mag leave him.' Said terri
Mag turned and looked at the old woman
Terri could hardly meet the light in his eyes. They burned so fiercely.
'Why ?' came his single word
'If he lives he may find the straight red road.'
Maglors face softened at that. And he looked down at Robert.
And then down at his own feet.
He passed Marie into Terri's hands and turned and left.
Marie after that lived with Terri Mika's family. And she knitted a winter scarf out of grey lambs wool for mag.
He wore that darn thing in every season. Even in summer.
Robert disappeared that fall and we never heard where he went.
