Chapter Text
“It’s showing at the multiplex on Thursday at 9:30.” Cas said looking up from his phone.
“Dude, I start work at 5 am.” Dean replied as he reached out to stop Emma dumping a whole shakers worth of sugar into her hot chocolate.
“So?” Cas asked with that infuriatingly adorable head tilt.
“So, that means I have to get up at four, and there’s no way I’m going to be able to drive halfway across town to watch a two and a half hour superhero movie, drive all the way home again, and still be able to get up for work and not, possibly, maim myself the next day.”
Despite the fact their first kiss had been one week, four days, 21 hours and 39 minutes ago, Cas and Dean still hadn’t managed to make it to their first date, but Cas had begun to sit with Dean whenever he brought Emma in for her after school drink. There’d been some hand holding, a few more kisses and a whole lot of goo-goo eyes, but still no date.
“Ah, true.” Cas said squinting back at his screen.
“It doesn’t have to be that movie.” Dean said, sipping his own coffee.
“But you said you really wanted to see that one.”
“I’d be happy to go to anything as long as it’s with you.” Dean gave Cas a sappy smile.
A gagging sound next to them destroyed the brewing moment.
“You two make me sick.” Charlie said with no heat as she passed by with some empty mugs, despite the sappy grin on her own face betraying the truth. “You both have Monday off, right?”
“Yeah.” Dean and Cas answered in unison.
“So why don’t you just go on Sunday after Emma goes back to her moms house?” Charlie suggested.
It warmed something inside that both Charlie and Cas had already learned his Emma schedule.
Cas looked over to Dean.
“That could work.” He said.
“Yeah, check out some times.”
Dean leaned across the table and soon enough they’d made plans for Dean to meet Cas at cafe beside the cinema for a meal before going to the movie. They were both relieved this was finally going to happen.

Date one - Becky’d
Dean was fidgeting nervously as he waited for Cas to arrive. The relieved grin that spread across his face when he saw Cas approaching could have lit the world.
“Hey Cas.” He said after kissing him ‘hello’.
“Hello Dean.” Cas returned, his own smile just as bright.
“I, ah…I booked us a table.” Dean said before they could become two grinning idiots just standing in the middle of the sidewalk.
Cas nodded and they headed inside.
The place wasn’t overly busy and they were seated in a nice quiet corner. Cas took the chair and Dean sat on the bench seat that ran the length of the back wall of the cafe. The waitress poured them some water each and took their drinks order then left them with the menus.
“This place does great burgers.” Dean said as they scanned the menus.
“Oh my God!” Cas exclaimed.
“What?”
“They do waffles with ice cream and Turkish cotton candy, for breakfast!” Cas looked back to the kitchen with wide excited eyes. “Do you think they’d make me some now?”
“Cas, babe.” Deans said as he reached across and took one of Castiels hands in his. “I’ll bring you here for breakfast one day, I promise.” Dean chuckled then lifted Cas’ hand and brought it to his lips.
Cas smiled and blushed slightly before thanking Dean and going back to his menu. In the end they ended up ordering a burger for Dean and chicken fried steak and fries for Cas. They were nibbling on some garlic toasts and talking when a petite blonde with a big book was seated beside them. She glanced their way, then looked again.
“Dean?” She asked.
“Hmmm?” Dean he responded looking with a casual disinterest in her direction.
“Dean Winchester? Is that you?” She asked.
Dean barely suppressed a groan as recognition struck him.
“Becky. Hi, how are you?” He asked with a forced friendliness.
“I’m good.” The perky young woman replied as she bounced in her seat. “How are you? How’s Sam? Is he here?”
“We’re good and no, he’s not. He’s back in Cali doing his internship, like the last time I saw you.” He replied, turning to Cas. “Cas, I’d like you to meet Becky, Becky this is Cas.”
“Hello Becky.” Cas said holding out his hand.
“Hi Cas! Are you a friend of Sams too?” She asked as she grasped his hand in both of hers and pumped his arm like she was trying to draw water from the deepest aquifer.
Cas threw a questioning, and slightly bewildered look at Dean before answering.
“No, I’ve never met Sam.” He said extricating his hand from hers, with some difficulty.
“Becky’s a friend of Sams, if you hadn’t guessed.” Dean explained with a not so subtle eye roll.
“A very good friend.” She said.
“Right.”
“Yeah they met at some nerd convention.” Dean added.
“Oh you!” Becky waved a hand at Dean. “It wasn’t a nerd convention.” She explained. “We both liked the same series of books about these two guys, Jared and Jensen, who travel the country and fight monsters and we met at a panel by the books author, Carver Edlund, and Sam asked the most intelligent questions.” Becky sighed with a far off dreamy look in her eyes. “We just clicked from there.”
“Right, clicked.” Dean scoffed.
“You know, if they ever made ‘Supernatural’ into a movie, Sams exactly how I’d imagine Jared to look.” She said as she smiled dreamily and rest her chin on her hand as she leaned against the table.
“You’ve said that before, a lot, on every platform available.” Dean said with as much sarcasm as he could muster. “Any way, this has been great, Becky, but our foods coming, and we have a movie to catch, soooo…”
“Oh you’re going to a movie? I haven’t been to a movie in ages.”
“Would you like to join us?” Cas asked before Dean even had a chance to stop him.
Cas flinched as Dean gently kicked him under the table.
“What?” He asked.
“No!” Dean whispered through gritted teeth.
“I’d love too!” Becky said and bounced in her seat just as her food was placed in front of her, so there went any chance of rushing through their meal and ditching her.
Dean groaned silently.
“Sorry.” Cas whispered.
Dean just shook his head and waved a hand in dismissal.
“Don’t worry about it.” Dean said and offered a smile before he picked up his burger and took a bite.
The whole interaction had been missed by Becky who had launched into a story about the one time Sam had taken her to the movies. Sure it had been as a group with other people, but she was sure he was just shy about asking her and he’s such a nice guy, he didn’t want anyone else left out. It was just a shame so many others sat between them and they couldn’t even share the popcorn she bought them.
Dean gave Cas a ‘see?’ look and an endearing smile. Cas just nodded and rolled his eyes.
The rest of the meal went reasonably uneventful and before they knew it they were walking side by side to the cinema.
“You’re kinda tall.” Becky said looking Castiel up an down. “And cute.”
“And gay. Very, very gay!” Dean added quickly as he reached across Becky to grip Cas’ jacket and pull him around beside him.
Cas wasn’t sure if he should be flattered by Deans possessiveness or worried as he stumbled to his side, but going by Becky’s obvious infatuation of Sam after just a handful of interactions, and past experiences, he decided Dean was just trying to help him dodge a bullet.

The movie was a disaster with the small blonde nuke situated between them, talking the whole way through, pointing out continuity errors, all the things that weren’t canon with the original comics and all the things that wouldn’t be remotely possible in real life.
“But it’s not real life Becky, it’s a movie.” Dean hissed through gritted teeth.
After 142 excruciating minutes, where Dean mostly just wanted to excuse himself and go smash his head against the nearest hard surface, the movie ended. They walked out together and stopped just outside the building.
“Well, this has been…great.” Cas said holding Deans hand.
“Not the most amazing first date, I admit, but I’ll make it up to you. Promise.” Dean replied lifting their entwined hands and kissing Cas’ knuckles. “Come on, I’ll walk you to your car.”
“Thanks for the great evening guys. I had heaps of fun, shame it has to end.” Becky piped up just as Dean was about to lead Cas away.
Dean sagged his shoulders and closed his eyes.
“Oh, that’s right, she’s still here.” Dean whispered.
“That’s fine Becky, it was nice seeing you again.” He said turning to her with a forced smile. “But it’s getting late and we should go now.”
“Oh, okay. You guys go, I’m just going to go wait for a taxi.” She said and pointed down the street to the darkened taxi rank.
“Where do you live? Maybe…” Cas began before being cut off by Dean yanking on his arm.
“No! It’s okay Cas, she’s in the other direction. You go and I’ll wait with her until her cab arrives.”
“Oh, if you’re sure.” Cas asked.
Dean turned to fully face him.
“Pos-i-tive.” He enunciated with a raise eyebrow.
“Okay. Well thanks for a nice evening Dean. I’ll see you Tuesday?” He asked.
“Absolutely.” Dean replied, this time his smile was genuine as he leaned in to kiss Cas good bye. “Call me.”
“I will.” He promised. “Bye Becky. It was nice meeting you.”
“Bye Cas. Nice to meet you too. I hope we can do this again some time. Maybe when Sams home?” She turned to look at Dean.
‘Over my dead body’. He thought but just smiled and shrugged.
“Maybe.” He said before turning back to Cas. “Drive safely and text me when you get home?”
“I will.”
They shared one last kiss then Dean was watching him as he made his way through the parking lot to his car. As much as Becky was a pain in his butt, and as much as he would rather have walked Cas to his car and shared more than the chaste Goodnight kiss they just had, Dean was a gentleman and couldn’t leave the young woman standing in the dark alone, at that time of night. So, with yet another sigh, he pulled his attention from Cas and walked Becky to the taxi rank. They stood and chatted, mostly about Sam, although Becky did mention a new guy who she had recently begun chatting to, so maybe hope was there that she would lose her infatuation with his brother. Dean could probably push that along if he mentioned Sams girlfriend Jess, but all he wanted to do was see Becky safely into a cab and go home.
He finally waved her off and headed across the carpark to where Baby was waiting for him. He climbed into the drivers seat and took a second to reflect.
Date one done.
Conclusion?
Disaster.
But Dean was not going to take that as any kind of forewarning on his budding relationship with Cas. This…this was just a speed bump. Their next date was going to be better.
He was sure of it.
