Grey Ghosts: Derecho

Summary:

“Heed careful watch of the Ones of Light and Dark, for when the sun meets its eclipse, the shades between will spread like ash"

Snowkit and Shadowkit are born into ElmClan, one of four clans that surround a great canyon. They're full of curiosity and wonder--as any kit is--but, little do they know a powerful prophecy looms overhead. One that will change their lives forever as cats flock to control the power lurking within the clans.

Notes:

This story began as a sort-of rewrite for warriors' PO3 and OOTS arcs with original characters, but has over time morphed into a full fan-clan story based off the idea of PO3's prophecy. The goal with this story from the beginning was the make the powers actually relevant to the end to make them seem more real and meaningful, and I hope I manage to exact this!

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Stars spread across an endless sky, shining from the darkness. Their light danced across the mystical meadow below as a breathless wind swirled around, sweeping past a creature that stood in the center of the clearing. Their figure was that of a cat, but their body was made purely of light and shone just as brightly as the lights above. They were so bright it was almost hard to look at them. They stood, staring up at the sky, expression unreadable.

Numerous starry figures of cats emerged and rounded the edge of the clearing. Though, none shone as brightly or seemed to be made of as much light as the one in the center. Many of them still looked like regular cats, only with stars twinkling in their fur and eyes. They all watched the center figure, waiting for them to speak. Nervous whispers passed throughout the group. Many glanced around at one another with worried expressions. It seemed that none of them dared to enter the clearing.

“The time has come for a new age among our living family,” the star-like figure began. Their voice was booming with great power to be heard by all., “I no longer have the strength to continue walking among you and guiding you. Very soon, I will become nothing more than one of the many stars that look down upon us now.” The figures at the edge of the clearing seemed surprised by this and looked around at one another. Some murmurs spread across the group.

“You’re abandoning us?” One voice came from the clearing edge.

“What are we meant to do without you? The clans rely on your gifts!” Another called out. The starry figure did not turn towards them, but shifted their gaze from the bounty of stars overhead.

“I assure you, I will not leave you unprepared. As my last duty to the canyon, I have one final gift for you all,” the starry figure soothed. The clearing was silent as they spoke. All eyes were fixated on the starry cat. “I have one final message I wish for you to deliver to the living.” The cats around the clearing looked at one another. Several stepped back from the edge, seemingly fearful of what was to come. Before any other voices could chime in, the starry cat tapped the ground, turning it into a reflective pool they stood upon. From the water, bright orbs of light rose up. The orbs shone in a way that would be blinding, but somehow merely emitted a calming light. The water swirled mesmerizingly. As it did, the starry figure closed their eyes. The tips of their toes seemed to lift from the ground and the wind grew stronger, swirling their fur. The figure opened their eyes. They beamed with light far greater than before and their already booming voice thundered to an all encompassing volume.

“ Heed careful watch of the Ones of Light and Dark– ” As they spoke, dark orbs rose from the water, eliciting some gasps. The light and dark orbs swirled around one another. They seemed to be fighting–or even dancing. “--for when the sun meets its eclipse–” the light and dark orbs collided, “-- the shades between will spread like ash .” As the starry figure finished speaking, the dark and light orbs completed their fusion, creating gray balls of light. The calm light seemed to have been corrupted and quickly, the orbs cracked. Their bits and pieces flaked away, spreading into the pool, quickly overtaking the clearing and turning everything to dust.
