Work Text:
kita shinsuke stands in the middle of a flower field, multicolor petals growing up to his knees surrounding him everywhere he turns. a gentle breeze tickles him as warm sunrays beam down at him. the sky is a perfect baby blue with spots of clouds littered all around, lazily moving with the wind.
completing the picturesque scene is you — his beloved standing just several steps in front of him. you’re looking back at him with the sparkle in your eyes he loves so much and the smile that always softens his heart without fail. he instinctively takes a step to move closer, hand reaching out to yours, and he makes no effort to fight back a smile of his own.
“shinsuke, are you awake?”
his steps falter for just a second. what a strange thing for you to say, he thinks. “what do you mean?”
“are you awake?” you ask again, this time a little louder. the expression on your face doesn’t change but your words don’t match or make any sense to him.
kita comes to a complete stop just a single step away from you. his brows furrow as he gives you a questioning look, head slightly tilted in confusion. his anxiety skyrockets as everything around him seems to shake and blur at an alarming rate, pulling him away from this world and into another where he’s lying down and you’re lightly shaking him awake.
it was a dream, he realizes.
he blinks the sleep away from his eyes as his vision focuses on reality. you’re sitting up next to him, none of the blankets on him and all of them bundled around you. the only source of light is from the bedside lamp that’s been switched on on your side of the bed, allowing him to barely make out your concerned face.
“what— are you okay?” kita asks, pushing himself up with his arms so he can get a better look at you. his voice is a little deeper, a little hoarser than his usual, riddled with sleep, and he clears his throat to remedy it.
you hesitate before replying. “just… just wanted to see if you’re awake is all,” you mumble. all of a sudden you can’t look him in the eye and choose to focus on his hands instead.
am i still dreaming? it takes three seconds for kita to register your words and then, it’s like a lightbulb goes off in his mind. he hasn’t realized his shoulders had tensed up but he lets them relax as he exhales, shooting you a look that’s usually reserved for the miya twins when they’re acting up.
“you watched a true crime video before bed and scared yourself, didn’t you?”
he thinks you’re adorable when you visibly deflate in front of him, upset that he’s figured you out so quickly.
“i thought it would help me relax,” you try weakly to justify your actions, “i didn’t think it would get in my head this much.”
kita is torn between scolding you and teasing you. finally, he refrains from either option and reaches out to untangle the blankets from around you.
“c’mere, love,” he calls out softly, tugging you closer to him and spreading the blankets out on both of you. he helps you settle back down onto your pillow before joining right next to you and pulling the blankets up to your chin. one of his arms is tucked under his pillow while the other rests around your waist, his finger drawing random shapes on the small of your back.
you sigh in content, relishing in his soothing ministrations. the proximity allows his scent to wash over you and the familiarity effectively quells whatever fears and anxiety you have.
“sorry for waking you, shin,” you whisper, fighting back a yawn as your eyelids get heavier.
kita’s eyes soften and he leans in closer to give you a peck on your forehead.
“i’ll always be here for you.”
