Back when Saguru lived in England and went to school in England and everything, instead of taking trips every once in a while, his detective career led him to make a fellow detective friend. Sera Masumi (or, as she was known to him back then, Masumi Sera, because of course different countries had different naming orders), a female high school detective, around the same age as him and just as intelligent. The two worked on more and more cases together until, in the end, he could call her his friend.
Both of them eventually moved to Japan. Masumi had come in order to take down an organization, and as much as Saguru would love to learn more, the details of the organization’s fall were still confidential. He was almost certain that Masumi’s classmate, Kudo Shinichi, whom had vanished for a while but then returned, was involved. However, the details were confidential; he would not pry.
Saguru stayed for different reasons. He was in love with the phantom thief Kaitou Kid.
Of course, it didn’t start as love. Kid was an interesting thief, and Saguru was interested in learning who he was. When he found out that Kid was his classmate Kuroba Kaito, Saguru didn’t give the information away. He wanted to find out for himself, not for the police or the world. Besides, Kid’s heists were fun. Why not attend a few more?
That was when he realized that he was starting to fall for the magician.
He had been pining for a while by now, hopelessly staring at Kaito and hoping that one day, he would find Kaito staring at him too. In fact, that was how Masumi figured out that Saguru had feelings.
It was after a heist. Saguru had invited Masumi to come with him - it had been a while since they hung out together without a murder happening, after all - and the two had an exciting chase with Kid. Afterwards, when the two arrived, panting, at the front of the building, Saguru saw Kaito and Aoko talking animatedly, seeming to be arguing about Kid and their differing opinions on him.
Apparently Saguru stared at Kaito for a few minutes, because Masumi nudged him harshly, almost knocking him over. “Saguru, haven’t you been listening to me?”
Stumbling until he regained his footing, Saguru gave Masumi an apologetic look. “No, sorry. What was it?”
Masumi rolled her eyes. “Nevermind. So which one of those two are you in love with?”
Saguru’s face flared up. “None of them! What do you mean?”
Masumi gave him an unimpressed look. “Saguru, I’ve known you for long enough to know that you are definitely in love. If I had to take a guess…” she paused, tapping her finger to her chin and watching Kaito and Aoko. “...the boy.”
“I may be bi, but you know I usually fall for the ladies,” Saguru muttered.
“I’m aware,” Masumi replied. “But look at that boy’s hands. Clearly a magician, isn’t he? Oh, oh, look, he’s doing a card trick!”
Saguru gave a quick glance at Kaito to see he was, in fact, doing a card trick. “What of it?”
“You also have a fascination with Kaitou Kid,” Masumi continued. “It gave me a sort of deja vu, actually, and during the heist, I finally figured out why.” She grinned. “You reminded me of Sonoko-kun.”
“...huh?”
“Sonoko-kun has a crush on Kid,” Masumi explained. “She’s way more open about it then you are, but she will do anything to catch Kid’s attention… just like you. You also told me once that you know Kid’s real identity, and as both are magicians, Kid is most likely that boy.”
Saguru sighed. “Fine, yes. But how did you know I wasn’t just crushing?”
“I’ve seen you crush before,” Masumi replied. “That look in your eyes just then… that was more then a crush.”
Saguru groaned at that. “Alright, Masumi. You now know who I’m in love with. So what?”
A slow grin spread across Masumi’s face. “Oh, you know what. I’m going to be your wingwoman.”
Saguru wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.
“Hello~! You’re Kuroba Kaito-kun, right?”
Saguru saw Kaito startle as he saw Masumi, eyes widening with almost fear before he plastered a fake, confused smile on his face. “Yeah. And you are…?”
Masumi grinned. “Sera, Saguru’s best friend! I’m a girl, but you already know that, don’t you?” She winked.
Kaito turned to glare at Saguru. “Oi oi! Did you tell her about your bizarre Kid theory?”
“What could lead you to that conclusion, Kuroba-kun?” Saguru asked innocently. “I’m pretty sure the general public doesn’t know about Kid’s mistake regarding Masumi’s gender.”
Kaito’s eyes widened but his poker face soon covered it. “Ah, Nakamori-keibu told me about it. Anyway, why are you guys here? To bother me about being Kid?”
“Actually, I heard that you’re a magician, and I’m interested in learning your secrets!” Smiling, Masumi took out her phone. “Could I have your number?”
Kaito frowned at her, then said, “I’m gay.”
“I’m lesbian! What a coincidence!”
“Then, if you aren’t flirting with me…” Kaito sighed. “Ah, you’re one of those detectives that love to ruin a magician’s fun by exposing all their secrets, aren’t you? Why should I give you my number?”
“I could get it from Saguru instead,” Masumi said innocently. “This is just more polite.”
“Fine,” Kaito muttered. He recited his number to Masumi, who plugged it into her phone.
She grinned and backed away. “Well, I’ll text you when I want to see you! Bye, Kuroba-kun!” Grabbing Saguru’s wrist, she began to drag the two of them away.
“What was that for?” Saguru muttered under his breath.
“You’ll find out~!” Masumi sang.
Saguru wondered how good Masumi was at this wingwoman thing, because so far, her methods just seemed strange.
sera masumi added 2 other people to a group chat.
sera masumi : hey~! are you guys free at 5pm on sunday? wanna go here?
sera masumi has sent an address.
Saguru frowned at his phone as these notifications appeared. After a while, he replied.
hakuba saguru : Sure, I think my schedule is free.
Looking through the chat details, Saguru groaned when he saw who the other person in the chat was. Now he knew Masumi’s plan.
kuroba kaito : ???
sera masumi : are you free kuroba-kun?
kuroba kaito : yeah i think so
kuroba kaito : but why
sera masumi : so you’re going to go right
kuroba kaito : sure, the food looks good
sera masumi : well, I’m not free! enjoy your date!
sera masumi has kicked sera masumi from the group chat.
Saguru groaned. “Masumi…” he growled under his breath, then he paused when he saw the next message.
kuroba kaito : @hakuba saguru oi oi oi we still going? food looks good
Saguru cracked a small smile. Okay, maybe this could work after all.
Saguru arrived at the restaurant at exactly 5pm, and was surprised to see Kaito already there. The other boy was dressed nicely, in a midnight blue dress that fell to his knees, and he gave an almost shy smile to Saguru when he came in. “Hey, Hakuba.”
Saguru smiled. “Hello, Kuroba-kun.” To the waiter, he said, “Table for two, please,” and the waiter led them to their table. After he sat down, he said, “You know that Masumi called this a date.”
“I know,” Kaito muttered, a blush clear on his face. “But, well, I, uh. Really wanted the food.”
Saguru chuckled. “I see.”
“D-do you like my outfit?” Kaito asked nervously, intertwining his fingers together. “Aoko picked it out for me. I had a bunch of choices but she told me this was the best one, so.” He began tapping his fingers on the table. “If you don’t like that I crossdress, though, I can always change.”
“You don’t need to,” Saguru replied fondly, then, feeling a spurt of confidence, he added, “You’re beautiful.”
Kaito flushed a pretty red, and Saguru smiled. “I-I see. You look really nice, too.”
“Thank you,” Saguru said, and then the waiter came and asked for their drinks.
Once the waiter left, Kaito quickly said, “Okay, I lied. I said I came here just because I wanted the food, but really, I just wanted a date with you. And this just seemed like the only chance I’d get, so.” Growling a little under his breath, he muttered, “Why am I so nervous? Poker face, Kaito.”
Leaning over the table, Saguru rested his hand on Kaito’s. “This isn’t the only chance,” he murmured softly. “We could go on dates in the future too. Because, well, I like you.”
Kaito startled, staring at him. “Huh?”
“I like you,” Saguru repeated. “And it’s clear now that you like me too.”
Kaito blushed, then said, “Yes. To me liking you. And to dates in the future. Gods, yes.”
Saguru smiled, feeling butterflies in his chest. “I’m glad.”
“How are you so calm?” Kaito muttered.
“I’m not,” Saguru admitted. “I’m nervous, but someone has to be the calmer one here, and that person clearly wasn’t you.”
Kaito let out a laugh at that, and Saguru smiled more.
Thank you, Masumi, he thought. I probably wouldn’t have had the courage to do this myself if it weren’t for you.
Because of his best friend, Saguru now had a boyfriend.
