Work Text:

' Moon! '

"..."

'Moon come on! You said you'd do it! Yesterday you said 'definitely tomorrow'! Well today is tomorrow!'

"Sunny, I'm not doing it! I can't! It was a stupid idea to begin with!"

'No it wasn't! You and Freddy would make great friends! You can do it!'

Moon whined quietly as he retreated into the shadows of the dark corner he was hiding in. He had been idling outside the entrance to rockstar row for almost half an hour. He had been trying so hard to gather up the courage to go and talk with Freddy for about four days, but had made zero progress.

It wasn't like he didn't want to. He really thought it would be for the better to socialize and get to know the main star a bit more. But that was exactly why he was hesitating.

Freddy wasn't just any Glamrock. He was the Glamrock. Freddy Fazbear himself. The one that the pizza 'plex was named after. That was… quite the intimidating starting point.

He had never been the talking type. He only ever talked with Sunny, the kids and DJ. Anyone else he interacted with got to talk to his 'menace' side. The playful and annoying one he used to either scare off people or joke around and be silly. He only ever went soft or serious with Sun. DJ also got to see it, but that wasn't nearly as frequent.

'Come on, Moony! Stop zoning out! You won't make it before the lights turn on if you just stand there!'

Moon caught himself getting stuck in his thoughts and focused back on the annoyed counterpart in his head.

"Maybe… that's for the best. I'm sure he must be busy. I don't think… he'd have time to talk anyways."

'UUUUUGH! COME ON! YOU CAN'T BE FREAKING SERIOUS! You're just going to avoid talking to anyone for the rest of eternity???'

"... Maybe. I mean… What would I even say? We have nothing in common."

'You don't know that. Because you don't know anything about him! So just ask him what he likes!'

"But what if he likes stuff I don't understand…?"

'Then ask about that!'

"But-"

'Oh my god, Moony! You can't plan out a conversation beforehand! You can't predict every possible outcome! You have to just go in there and see what happens!'

"Are you crazy?! I could say something totally awful and make him upset or weirded out! Do you want him to dislike me?!"

'Moon-'

As the two were talking to each other, they were suddenly interrupted by the sound of heavy, metallic footsteps. It scared Moon stiff and he immediately scrambled up the nearest wall and hid himself in the shadows again.

He watched as a figure emerged from the closest door. It was quickly apparent that the figure was actually Freddy.

Great! Out of all the Glamrocks, it had to be him!

'Look, Moonbeam! Freddy! This is the perfect opportunity! You can just act like you randomly came across each other! That should make it less-'

'SHHHHHH! STOP TALKING!'

The nighttime attendant watched carefully as Freddy walked right past them and started towards some unknown destination. It seemed purposeful, like he had a goal and wasn't just out on any old stroll around the 'plex.

Moon hummed curiously, wondering where he could be heading in the dark. It was quite rare to see them roaming when Moon was out. It happened, but they preferred the light. He couldn't really blame any of them.

'Moony? What are you doing?'

'... Sun… why don't you take a little nap? I'll go ahead and chat with Freddy.'

'OH HELL NO YOU AIN'T! You can't expect me to believe you changed your mind just like that! What are you planning?!'

Moon didn't answer his question. Instead he started to silently follow after the bear as he wandered through the dark halls on his own. It was like a game of spy. An observation of an animal and their habits. Like gathering intel. He could see what Freddy was doing, then learn more about him that way. No need to make a fool out of himself.

*~*~*

About a 15 minute walk and nothing noteworthy had happened. Well, almost. Freddy had taken a detour to walk around the guest areas, the ones where people would usually sit and eat or rest their feet. He'd look around benches and tables, sparing not much more than a glance up and down before continuing on.

Moon found that very interesting. It was almost like he was looking for something. Strange. What could Freddy Fazbear be looking for? Had he lost something? Or was there another option he couldn't even begin to imagine? So many questions! He needed to get to the bottom of this mystery. All the while ignoring Sun's pleas to just talk to him. No way.

After 10 more minutes of walking and looking around, Freddy reached a staff room. If Moon remembered correctly, that was a storage room. A smaller one for things that employees might need easy and quick access to. But… What could Freddy need from there?

The bear opened the door and walked inside, leaving the door slightly open behind him. So… probably wouldn't be there long. Just fetching something and getting out. Still, Moon might be able to sneak a peek at what he was doing.

He got down to the floor and snuck closer to the little opening, peeking inside and trying to find that sneaky animatronic. He couldn't see him from where he was, so he tried to carefully push the door open a tad more.

Unfortunately, it gave away a tiny creak. It scared him so much that he shot back against the wall and waited for the sound of a reaction.

But… he heard nothing. Calming back down again, he snuck back over and glanced in again, still not seeing him anywhere inside.

Now he was just confused. Where could he have gone? He pushed the door open more and poked his head in, daring to step inside as he didn't spot anyone.

That was the moment the door shut behind him.

Fear immediately grasped his body and restrained him on the spot, knowing exactly what had just happened.

"Daycare attendant… Why have you been following me all this way?"

God damnit. He wasn't sneaky at all. And now he'd have to pay for it dearly.

"U-u-uh-umm… I-I-I uh…"

"I don't appreciate being spied on. You may be part of security, but I do value my privacy."

Moon was so scared that he wanted to just bolt right past that bear and run straight for the daycare. What was he supposed to say in that situation?! Could he say anything?!

'Calm down! Just explain yourself!'

'THAT'S THE WORST IDEA!!! THE EXPLANATION IS THAT I STALKED HIM FOR NO GOOD REASON! I CAN'T TELL HIM THAT!!!'

He yelped as he heard the heavy footsteps slowly get closer behind him. Oh god! He made Freddy Fazbear upset! And he didn't even say anything! He was horrible at making friends!!!

"Dayca-uh… ahem. Moon. Was there… a reason you followed me here?"

'DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT! I CAN'T SAY NOTHING! I HAVE TO SAY SOMETHING! IF I RUN, WILL I MAKE HIM MADDER?!'

'Just tell him the truth! You wanted to talk but didn't know how to approach!'

He could have said that, if his voice box wanted to cooperate with him. Instead, he said something a little… different.

"Uhm… You were… walking… weird…"

'...'

'...'

'HE WAS WALKING WEIRD?!?'

'I DON'T KNOW, SUN!!! I DON'T KNOW!!!'

He felt a hand on his shoulder, making him feel even more stressed out. Why he was so suddenly unable to act normal was beyond him! He could just act like his usual snarky, threatening, devilish self and it would be fine! But he couldn't! He had just completely lost the ability to act! At all!

"Moon, my friend. Is everything alright? You're as stiff as a board and your voice is… wavering. You're not feeling unwell, are you?"

He sounded so concerned. Despite the creepy way Moon had been acting and the accidental insult, he was sounding so genuinely worried about him. He didn't really have much of a choice at that point. He turned around and looked at Freddy's face.

It was… just him. Just normal Freddy. Nothing noteworthy about him. He didn't look upset or angry. Only a little worried.

"I… I'm uh… n-nervous, sir!"

'WHY THE HELL DID I SAY SIR?!?'

'It was just a slip up! Don't worry! You'll be fine!'

"Ah. Please! No need for that, my friend! Just call me Freddy, please. May I ask what you're worried about?"

He was wracking his system, trying to come up with any excuse he could possibly conceive. There had to be something he could say to save face!

"I… was s-scare t-t-to talk to you…"

… Fuck.

"Oh! Is that why you were…? Well, I assure you, you don't need to be scared! I'd be glad to talk with you! Would you like to have a seat? We- oh… I forgot we were in the storage room. Though you do look like you need to sit down. Maybe there's a chair or-"

Moon had no clue what to do. He was being so polite and friendly, even worrying about him. There was no way Moon could put on his menace persona now, he didn't wanna offend the bear in any way.

"There! That should do it! Feeling better?"

Moon only then noticed he was sitting on a box by the wall. He was so lost in thought that he didn't even pay attention to where he was! It felt… almost a little sobering, weirdly enough.

"Um… y-yeah… I… I do, actually."

"Glad to hear it. Now, go ahead. What did you want to talk to me about?"

Aaaaand there it was again. The nerves. Damn it Moon! Calm down! Stop being so socially anxious all of a sudden!

"A-ah… well… I um… you… c-cool place ya got here!" Smooth. Very smooth.

"Hm? Well I didn't intend to stay in here! I just came to check the Lost and Found is all!"

"O-Oh? Why's that?"

"Well… it's a bit of an embarrassing thing to admit…"

… Well Moon was clearly too invested to give up now! He had to know what this was all about!

"I won't tell anyone…"

"Well… alright then. I came to see if I could find any books in the Lost and Found. I sometimes come across magazines, comics and even novels in there. And I'm… kind of super interested in finding any new books someone might have left behind. I found that I… really like reading the stuff humans write…"

"Really? People forget that type of stuff? The magazines I can get, but how do you forget a whole ass book?"

"I have no clue. But I'm very thankful! A month ago I found this one book called 'Narnia'. It's about these four children who stumble into a wardrobe that leads to a fantasy land called Narnia, with magic and mythical creatures! It's ruled by an evil witch and they have to help defeat her to free the land!"

"That sounds… really fun. Did you finish it?"

"Oh! I finished it twice! I couldn't put it down! I returned it here when I was done, but found it was still here when I checked again, so I decided to reread it!"

"Wow. That good?"

"Oh it was amazing! I highly recommend it! In fact, it might still be here. Hold on, let me check."

Freddy turned around and walked over to the chest labeled 'Lost and Found'. He opened it and started searching through it while humming casually.

Moon waited patiently as he watched him riffle through all the lost stuff people had yet to take back. But as he did, he realized something.

Wait… I just… I just talked with him. Like… a normal conversation. That… was a lot easier than I built it up to be.

"Ah! Here it is!" Freddy announced as he pulled out the book and grinned proudly. He walked back over to Moon and handed him the book to look over. He did so, finding the cover very intriguing.

"I think you should give it a read! Seems like something that would suit you. I mean… I probably shouldn't say that. After all, I don't know anything about you. That was a careless statement. I'm sorry."

"O-Oh, n-no! Not at all! It… really looks interesting. And I like the sound of it. I'll definitely read it. Thanks!"

The Glamrock's smile turned from strained to soft, reassured by the daycare attendant's intrigue in the story. He moved and sat down beside him, chuckling gently.

"So… is everything going ok with you?"

Oh god! Small talk! Anything but small talk! Quick! Something else!

"I'm sorry for spying on you."

… Ok, not the best option. But let's roll with it.

"Ah-! D-don't worry about it! I… It was a little bit off-putting, I will admit. But… It seems like you were just shy. I can understand that. Not completely, but I can also get nervous talking to someone I don't talk with usually."

Shy??? Did he just call me SHY??? That's… that's not my thing at all! I'm scary and a jerk! I'm not shy!

"I… I guess…"

"... You must have a hard time approaching people, right? I've… heard about your reputation among the human staff. Can't be easy talking with anyone when everyone tells you you're scary."

Moon shot up and whipped his head around towards Freddy, feeling nervous again as he wasn't sure how to respond to something like that.

'SUN! WHAT THE FUCK DO I SAY HERE???'

'...'

'SUN, IF YOU WENT OFFLINE NOW, I SWEAR TO GOD-!!!'

"Sorry. That might have been a little forward. I've been told that I'm quite… intrusive before. Please forgive me if I'm being too nosey."

"... … … No… it's fine. I'm just… You're right. I don't know how to talk with people. Unless it's with my typical menacing or sassy attitude, I really only interact with the kids and their parents. I can be… genuine with the kids. Those rare times with parents, I just have to act professional. But… with you… I'm completely stumped."

"I'm… sorry, Moon. I'm not sure I understand. Menacing? Sassy?"

He looked away, pulling his legs up against his chest as he tried to hide his face in case it gave away his shame.

"Well… like you said. I have a reputation. Employees think I'm creepy. The other Glamrocks think I'm an asshole. And you… don't even know that much."

After saying that last part, he felt a surge of panic.

Shit! That sounded so rude! I didn't mean it as a jab against him!

He looked over at Freddy to try and excuse the bad wording, but found him looking very calm and understanding.

"I see… Well, I'm not sure what to say about that. You seem perfectly nice to me."

"That's because I don't want to offend you. One wrong word and it's to the garbage for me."

Freddy looked shocked, hearing him say that. That made him pause again, wondering if that in and of itself was offensive.

"... I'm… so sorry I made you feel that way. Truly, I do not wish for that for anyone, no matter what! Sure, I may not appreciate a bad attitude like Monty's, but that doesn't deserve punishment like that!"

"God… FUCKING DAMN IT! You are too fucking sweet, dude! See! That's why I can't sass you like I do with Monty! You are just so nice! I'd feel so bad!

"Oh…! Why… thank you, Moon. That's the nicest thing I've heard in a while. While I… don't condone the language, I really appreciate the compliment. You are very kind yourself!"

God damn this big teddy bear! He's making me feel all mushy! What's with his vibes that's making me all soft and shit?!

"... Can I ask you something intrusive?"

Freddy seemed surprised by the request. It was an unusual one after all. But he simply nodded and watched the lunar robot cautiously.

"Are you doing ok? With… the Bonnie thing and all? I overheard a conversation about you being good friends with him. Must be hard hearing his decommissioning being brought up in such a disrespectful manner."

Freddy's expression dropped into a sad frown, ears drooping. He looked gloomy as he sighed and started trying to find his words.

"I… he… I'm doing better. It's been very rough ever since. He was someone I would confide in and who I could go to for advice and a mood booster. He was my closest friend. It's… u-uhm…"

Moon reached out and ran a hand over his back, making him look back up at him. At first the bear seemed surprised, but then it quickly changed into a thankful smile.

"It sounds like you just need a friend."

"Aha ha ha. I do have friends, Moon! Chica and Roxy are very nice and DJ Music Man is a great person!"

"... Would you… can… do you think you have room for one more?"

He seemed shocked by the question. It was like he had never heard such a phrase before in his life! Moon doubted that was the case, but didn't rule out the possibility.

"That's… Do you really want to be friends? So soon after our first real conversation?"

"Well… maybe I also need a friend."

"Ah- Uh- Well- In that case, of course! I'd love to be friends! That sounds wonderful, Moon!" Freddy finished his thanks with a big bear hug, pulling Moon down to be on his level.

"... … … … … Holy shit … This is the best hug I've ever had…"

Freddy burst out laughing, giving him a pat on the back as he pulled back a bit.

"I have heard that before! Glad you agree with that too!"

Moon chuckled at that and pulled him back in, giving him a friendly pat on the shoulder as well. He quickly checked the time, wanting to see how much time he had left until the lights turned on.

About 20 minutes.

"Awe… only 20 minutes left? Damn it. I was hoping to talk a bit more."

"Ha! Why hope? 20 minutes is plenty of time! Tell me about yourself! Do you have any hobbies or interests?"

The tall robot was surprised by the forwardness, despite literally sharing a body with the biggest extrovert in the entire complex. Guess it was different when it was a stranger talking to you and not your kind of conjoined twin.

"Well… I… don't know. I usually don't do much when I'm out. Just my job. Sun is usually the one with the most freetime, so I can't say I have that many hobbies."

"Well then today's your lucky day! You can pick up reading with me and we can talk about the books we find!"

"Ah… that… sounds really nice! Guess I'll give it a shot. But… to answer your question, I guess I enjoy organisation. It's very satisfying to put things in a nice and neat order. I also enjoy singing."

"Oh! You sing too? That sounds wonderful! What kind of things do you usually sing?"

Wow. Freddy was a natural at this. He could keep a conversation going like it was nothing! Moon was stunned by how easy he was to talk to.

"Well… I'm actually a big fan of, don't laugh, I know it's predictable, lullabies. I like learning lullabies from different parts of the world in their native language. Though I do enjoy singing other songs too, usually the soft and slow type. It's… kind of my thing."

"Oh wow! That's very cool! Think you could give me an example of one such lullaby? You have me intrigued now!"

"U-um… s-s-sure… How about… this one Swedish lullaby called 'Trollmors vaggvisa'?"

Freddy smiled and leaned forward in anticipation. Moon fake cleared his throat and sang quietly.

"När trollmor har lagt sina elva små troll och bundit fast dom i svansen,

Då sjunger hon sakta för elva små troll

De vackraste ord hon känner.

Ho aj aj aj aj buff!

Ho aj aj aj aj buff!

Ho aj aj aj aj buff, buff!

Ho aj aj aj aj buff~!"

Freddy applauded him politely with an impressed smile.

"Wow, Moon! That was beautiful! Know any more?"

"Um… I know a Jewish lullaby called 'Numi numi'..."

The bear didn't even have to ask, Moon just started singing on his own. But Freddy was paying full attention to his performance.

"Numi, numi yaldati,

Numi, numi, nim.

Numi, numi k'tanati,

Numi, numi, nim.

Aba halach la'avoda -

Halach, halach Aba.

Yashuv im tzeit halevana -

Yavi lach matana~!"

Once again, he applauded the caretaker for his amazing singing voice. Moon just looked at the floor, not sure how else to react.

"Amazing! You really have a talent for singing! You sound wonderful!"

"Thanks Freddy. I… do like my singing voice. And it's a lot of fun."

"It is! Perhaps some time, we could do a duet together. That could be fun!"

"R-really? You want to do that?"

"Why not? It's been a while since I've gotten to do it. Gosh, how long has it been? Must have been… before…"

The daycare attendant could immediately see where that sentence was heading. He stopped him with a hand on his shoulder, gaining his attention again.

"I would very much like that. If you… want to talk or anything sometime, I'm down. I enjoyed this chat thing we had."

"Same here. Let's do it again soon. I'll send a message to you or I'll stop by the daycare sometime. Sounds good?"

Moon just looked at him for a few seconds before nodding, very much liking that idea.

"Good. Then I should be heading back to my room. I'm starting to run low on power. Goodbye, Moon!"

And with that, Freddy got up from his seat and walked out the storage room, leaving the lunar bot behind to process that whole interaction.

He quickly checked on Sun's status and saw he was really offline. Though it seemed his battery was also low, so at least it wasn't some sick joke. He let out a sigh and got up to his feet, heading over towards the exit.

"... I did it… I made a new friend. I… I really did it. God… how fucking brave am I?"

The empty silence of Sun's absence made his remark feel a little awkward, so he decided to fill in the silence himself.

" Wow Moony! You did so good! Look at you, being social and shit! You're the best talker there is! " He said in a slightly higher pitched voice, trying to imitate Sun while heading for the daycare.

"That's right. I'm the best talker. Talked the shit out of Freddy! He's completely charmed by me now! Total impressed! I know, right?"

Moon kept patting himself on the back, all the way back to their room.
