Marks of a True Hero

Summary:

Izuku knows his family is into shady shit. He was just wrong about which parent was the source of it.

No way did he expect his mom of being the sister of the hero killer. Nor that the hero killer would end up taking him in after her death.

But here he is now. Learning to fight so that one day he can be a hero.

A proper one.

Chapter Text

If you asked Izuku which of his parents he thought would be most likely to have a shady past he would definitely say his dad.

I mean come on.

The man has a two year old son and a wife and leaves to go on business in America, for two years?

Shady.

The man doesn't call once he gets the news that he doesn't have a quirk?

Shady.

So imagine his surprise when he's ten. Six years after his diagnosis as quirkless. Six years after pretty much all of society turned against him. One week after his mom died. And he finds out she has a brother and that he has an uncle.

And that she wanted said uncle to take him should anything happen to him.

Which mom what?

Like he's glad he won't have to share a house with Kacchan. But he doesn't know this man very well. At least he knows Kacchan and his parents.

Plus the man claiming to be his uncle is definitely in some sort of disguise. The hair is wrong. It's definitely a wig. His nose is faker than Kacchan's attitude when their parents are around. His glasses are fake too.

He has a picture in his pocket. A picture his mom left him of her brother. He'll go to the bathroom before leaving with him and that way he at least knows he has the right person.

He doesn't want to be kidnapped.

Eventually the other mourners leave. None but the Bakugous offer condolences to him. Why would they? No one cared about his existence when she was alive. Why would they care now?

"Let's go kid," his maybe uncle says. And his voice definitely does not match his face.

"Can I use the rest room?"

"Sure kid. Go check the photo your mom gave you." He says.

Izuku blushes.

"How did you…"

"That trick was my idea. I'm glad she went with it."

Izuku is a little more weary but instead of going to the bathroom he just looks at the photo here.

And freezes.

"Now you see why I had to come in disguise."

Izuku nods.

His uncle is the Hero Killer.

"Come on kid I think we need to have a long talk and I don't think a graveyard is the place to have it."

Izuku follows him silently as he climbs into the car. The apartment they go to is small. Big enough for the two of them but not much else.

"I usually don't spend much time here. I prefer to stay when I keep all my equipment. But I'll be sticking around more."

"Why?"

"Because I made a promise to Inko when she said she wanted me to take you that I would keep an eye on you. Keep you safe. Happy. Can't do that if I'm not here."

Well that's logical.

"However you will be going with my to my other place most nights."

"Why?"

"You wanted to be a hero didn't you?"

"Yeah but I'm…"

"Doesn't matter. A quirk doesn't mean shit if the person opposite you in a fight is a better fighter. And things like quirks can be replicated easily with machines. Support items can split fire, deliver a shock, put people to sleep, hell even give super strength."

That's kinda true Izuku guesses.

"But the one thing that can't be replicated is the ability to fight. And I don't mean that showy shit the heroes use to look pretty on camera. I'm going to teach to fight to survive. To truly fight. I can't and won't turn you into those showy chumps. But I think you can become a damn good underground hero."

"Yes! I'll be the best underground hero! I just want to save people."

"Good kid. Now training is not going to be easy. You will be facing people that would happily kill you. But we can do it. We have four years to get you ready."

"What about school?"

"Can't you test out of that shit or something?"

"Y…yeah."

"Then do it. Your mom said you're a smart little thing. Prove her right."

Izuku nods. He can do that.
