Chapter Text
The rain splattered against the windows were the only sounds heard in their quiet night together. Korra had a panic attack earlier and has since calmed down thanks to the efforts from Asami. Korra couldn’t explain why, but the feeling of someone’s fingers lightly petting her from her temple to behind her ears was an incredibly calming sensation.
Asami sat silently as Korra laid herself on her lap. She felt extremely guilty, she couldn’t fully follow Korra’s anxiety-laced stream of consciousness rambling earlier. She was unfortunately preoccupied with something else, she cursed herself. She looked down at Korra and noticed that her sniffles have calmed down, her eyes were still reddened though. She looked like she was contemplating a hard fact.
“A-Asami?”
“Yes, Korra? Asami answered softly.
“Do…do you think it would be easier for us if we just…went away?”
Was that a part of Korra’s panic earlier? Asami couldn’t remember. If she didn’t… never mind that for now, she had to solely focus on Korra right this very moment. “No, I don’t think so. It would be probably the same.”
Korra looked confused, “What do you mean? Wouldn’t we be better off if we just didn’t have to do the duties that were thrown at us? We’d have more time for each other. We don’t have a lot of that right now… we always got to be doing something. What if I just want to be with you? I’m just…not happy about all the time we have to spend apart.”
“Well, if we were to just leave, that would hurt our friends and families. It wouldn’t be fair to them. And…” Asami chuckled lightly, “I know how you are. You’d enjoy it at first but then you’ll become bored. You take so much pride in knowing that you are able to help people, I’ve seen you beam with happiness with your selfless acts for everyone around you. Taking yourself away from all that…you’d have to discover a different passion about yourself, and honestly, I wouldn’t want that.”
Korra quietly scoffed, “You really think I’m that great of a person?” her voice sounded defeated and weak.
“Korra, of course, I do! You wouldn’t be my girlfriend if I didn’t think that.” Asami moved her hand and playfully pinched Korra’s cheek. Korra pouted and Asami couldn’t help but laugh. She resumed petting Korra’s head and continued, “Korra, I love you. Every little part of you, and honestly, I love seeing the best version of yourself, even if it makes you leave for weeks or months at a time. But when you come back, and I get to see that sense of self-accomplishment just radiating off of you, I fall for you all over again.”
Asami smiled to herself, but when she looked down and noticed Korra blushing, the smile widened.
“So, yes. I do think that you’re a great person, in fact, I know it. I only let good people have my heart. And…” Asami blushed, “I can only see myself spending the rest of my life with an amazing person.”
Korra couldn’t help but smile at the affirmation, but it soon became more mischievous, “Well, tell Mako congratulations for me.”
Asami inwardly groaned as she tilted her head up to the ceiling, spirits help her. She fought back the urge to playfully smack Korra but decided to instead pinch her ear a bit.
Korra laughed, “What? I’m just saying that Mako is a very lucky guy to be your husband.”
“You know what I meant, Korra.” Asami ruffled Korra’s hair. This was a good sign after all, Korra’s playful nature was returning. Something moving at the corner of her eye stole her attention, but she forced herself to return to Korra. She spoke once more, and in a more serious tone, “Listen, Korra. I love you, so much. But I feel like I missed something. There was…I can’t recall everything you talked about during your attack, and I don’t want to be a bad partner and pretend that I did. So, if you have the strength to, I’d like to hear if anything else is on your mind. I promise you that you have my undivided attention now.”
Korra closed her eyes and took a deep breath, “Actually, I don’t right now. I’d…I’d like to stay like this for…a bit longer.” She stated sheepishly.
“Okay, love. I’m here for you, always.”
