Work Text:

Team Year 6

The last guy I dated and I broke up, we left on good terms, but I will forever remember his words “you have to work on yourself until you are ready for a relationship.”
What did he even mean by that?

I called Dick. We had a history. He knew me better than most people. Surprisingly he picked up after the second ring.
“Hey, Zee, what’s up?”
“Nothing much, I’m just trying to sort something out and I'm wondering if you can help me?”
“Anything for you,” I blush, thankfully it’s just a phone call and he can’t see.

I explain the situation of this last relationship, “We weren’t together more than a few months. We tried going on dates but our work schedules had a hard time lining up, and when they did I thought everything was going well. He would even help me run errands.”

“And what about your work with the League or your ongoing quest?” He asked
“See, that ties in to our work schedules not always lining up. He’s just a civilian with a normal job and I’m –”
“You. You’re you.”
“Exactly!”

“Well, what exactly is it that you want from me right now? Advice or to just listen?” He asked
Honestly… I wasn't sure why I called Dick instead of Artemis. Maybe I wanted the male perspective? I also didn’t want to bug her with my problems.
“Ummm… maybe a little bit of both.”
I could hear him sighing on the other line.

“Zee, in my honest opinion, I think he didn’t feel like you were prioritizing him. It sounds like despite the length of time together, you didn’t really see much of each other. You’re amazing at all that you do, incredible magician and beautiful. Any guy would be lucky to get a girl like you. The balancing act might be too difficult to handle, though.”
“What do you mean? I am great at multitasking!”
“Multitasking, yes, but balancing two different aspects of your life, not so much. You can’t have a normal civilian life without your partner also being involved in your other life. Not only that, but I must remind you that our line of work is dangerous. Having a civilian partner is doable, but you run the possibility of putting them at risk or worse.”

He made some really good points: “Well, what do you mean by not making him feel like a priority?”
“I don’t know. Maybe he was making more time for you and didn’t feel like you were making time for him?” he sighed again “Zee, I don’t really know too much about relationships, you know that. If you’re going to be with someone for the long run, I think balance is what you need.”

Maybe I was focusing too much on my quest to find a way to get my dad released from the clutches of Dr. Fate, but then again, if this guy truly wanted to be with me, he would understand that what I do is important. A single tear rolled down my cheek “maybe it wasn’t meant to be.” I barely whispered on the phone.

“Or maybe it wasn’t the right time.” Dick responds. There was a hint of something in his voice, but I wasn’t sure what it was.
