Chapter 1: Prologue - The Stripe Kingdom
Chapter Text
An animal. A hostage. A slave. An oracle.
The whispers about the cursed Stripe Princess spread far and wide, each one a little different from the next. She was born with the power to predict omens of misfortune. She was held captive in a cage, deep in the bowels of the Stripe Palace. She was wild and dangerous, animalistic even.
What was true and what was false? I honestly didn’t have a clue. I’d been hearing rumours for ages, but it was hard to pinpoint anything. The Stripe Kingdom was neighbours with my own kingdom… yet we hardly knew a thing about it. Being a reporter for the local newspaper, I decided it was time to go and figure out some answers.
So I headed over to the Stripe Kingdom, old fashioned notebook and pen in hand. It was a tiny kingdom, containing a teeny village and boarded-up homes and bushes.
The Stripe Kingdom is by far one of the smallest kingdoms I’ve been to; it’s even smaller than the Pastel Kingdom. Everyone there is so… tightly knit. Maybe a little too tightly knit. Like, being-stuck-in-a-game-of-sardines knit.
Some funny-looking guys eyed me over as I headed into the small township. They seemed to be some kind of neighbourhood watch or something.
Could they stop staring already??? I cursed, internally.
They did stop staring, but they did something even worse… they came over to me.
“What’s your business here?” one of them asked.
“Just visiting,” I forced a smile.
“Just visiting, huh?” he narrowed his eyes. “What’s the deal with that?”
He was staring at my notepad. I hugged it close to my chest.
“I like to write,” I told them. Hey, it wasn’t a lie.
The guys stared at each other.
“We’re watchin’ you,” one of them scowled, and the pricks finally left me alone.
I headed into town and asked around for some answers on the Stripe Princess, which made people look at me funny.
I suppose it was partly because I stuck out like a sore thumb, dressed in my denim jacket and jeans. People kept coming up to me and asking where I was from, who I came with, why I was here, etc. I guess it didn’t help that I was carrying around a suspicious clipboard and wearing an even more suspicious brimmed cap.
“Why are you so curious about our royal family - may their reign be long and prosperous?” one woman asked.
“What do you intend to do with the information?” another scowled.
“Don’t even think about insulting the ones who wield the crown - may their reign be long and prosperous!” a man snapped.
Man, why does everyone think I’m here to sabotage the kingdom or something?! I thought. Does it kill just to be a little bit of a snoop??!
Eventually, a guy sat me down in a little ol’ striped bar, promising to deliver some answers.
We sat in silence for way too long. He took a very, very long sip of his beer. I was beginning to regret coming.
“Um,” I coughed. “So… the princess?”
The guy took another sip.
“The king - may his reign be long and prosperous - has said that the princess is an oracle of great power,” he told me. “With her visions, our little kingdom will grow at last, knowing our enemies’ every move and misfortune!”
“… do you have to say that every time?” I asked.
“Say what?” he asked.
“The ‘long and prosperous’ thing,” I replied.
“Oh yes,” the guy nodded. “Blasphemy is punishable by death!”
“Seriously?” I asked. “I mean, there’s no guards around here, so why’s it matter?”
“You naive foreigner,” he shook his head. “The guards are always listening. Word spreads fast.”
Welp. Safe to say I’m glad I don’t live there.
After my conversation with the guy from the bar, I sat down at a tiny striped cafe. The waitress gave me a glare as she handed me my coffee. I figured it would be wise not to drink it…
I sighed, gazing at my notepad. I hadn’t learned a lot, aside from the fact that the people of the Stripe Kingdom were crazy paranoid and the princess would supposedly save the kingdom with her oracle powers or whatever.
In all honesty, I felt kind of bad for her. She was stuck in the middle of all this crap; her own kingdom was forcing her to be its oracle, a tool to better itself. It wasn’t a fate I’d wish upon even my worst enemy.
Suddenly, a woman came and sat opposite me.
“I heard you’re looking for info about the captive Stripe Princess?” she asked.
I suppose the kingdom’s paranoia had snuck into me since I could immediately tell this woman was not of the Stripe Kingdom. She was fairly tall, a brown cloak obscuring most of her figure. However, I could still see strands of blue hair and golden eyes staring out at me.
I have to admit, I was thankful to see another outsider.
“Yeah,” I replied. “I’m just doing my duty as a local news reporter.”
“Heh,” the woman smirked. “I’m looking for info on her as well.”
“Are you a reporter too?” I asked.
“Not quite,” the woman told me. “I’m gonna get her out of that palace.”
“What?!” I gasped, almost knocking over my coffee. “Is that even possible?”
“Shhhh!” the woman hissed.
I covered my mouth, eyeing my surroundings.
The woman leaned in. “Yep. I’m gonna rescue her.”
“But why?” I asked. “I’ve heard she’s dangerous! And plus, blasphemy is punishable by death here… imagine what they’ll do to you if they see you trying to kidnap the princess!”
The woman clenched her fists. “A recent life-changing experience made me realise I want to help those in need. That princess doesn’t deserve to be treated as a tool by her own kingdom.”
“You’re crazy, I’ll give you that,” I shook my head. “What’s your name?”
The woman grinned. “Call me Calpernia.”

Chapter Text
A prince must always do what's best for his kingdom.
This was the first lesson Prince Eifen learned as crown prince of the Stripe Kingdom. It was the message burned into his brain as the young 4 year old watched his parents execute traitors to the kingdom.
The queen, king and their son stood to the side, the executioner walking in with an axe.
"We'll never submit to your rule!!" one of the traitors roared from their chains. "You are all monsters!! You should be rotting in prison!!!"
"Please, just let us go!" another cried. "We have families waiting for us!"
And their heads were cut clean off. Eifen's father placed a firm hand on his son's shoulder.
"This is what happens when commoners go against the crown," he told Eifen. "Never let them go unscathed."
Despite being so young, Eifen took the message to heart. He would remember it well.
"Long live the crown!" "We loyally serve our majesties!"
Commoners bowed as Eifen stood in front of the crowd, his parents on either side. Some were shaking in fear.
The crowd continued to chant as the king stood in front, looming over the denizens below.
"Nothing less than this," the queen told her son, holding her baby daughter in her arms. "This is what we expect from our people."
Eifen gazed over his subjects, loyally bowing before him.
"One day, the whole world will be beneath our feet," the queen continued, gazing at the baby in her arms. "They will all serve the crown."
The subjects chanted and chanted.
"What do you live for, peasants?!" the king roared. "Tell me, what is the only thing that matters to you?"
"We do everything for the kingdom!" the crowd called out.
Eifen clenched his fists.
Anything for the kingdom...
When Eifen turned 5, his parents had another child. Right from the get go, his parents explained why.
"In order to secure our future, Eifen, we must know what upcoming perils we will face," the queen explained. "Before I became pregnant, I took a potion that would give my new child the power to foresee the future."
"The new princess will be a great asset to us," the king piped in. "We will have a much greater chance of taking on the other kingdoms with this power. They will not see us coming."
Eifen nodded in understanding.
The princess was kept hidden in her room, away from the public. They only knew of her powers, how she would save everyone.
The little toddler spewed out messy prophecies, all written in small, sing-songy rhymes. Royal interpreters filled in the blanks of what the young child missed out on.
When the child grew older, however... she refused to share her prophecies, much to the chagrin of her family. She hid in the closet, glaring at her parents and the servants whenever they drew too close.
"Clearly, we need to take a different approach to get her to talk," the queen sighed, turning to her son. "Eifen... if you would be so kind, play the part of the loving big brother to her, won't you? You must just get her to open up."
Eifen blinked. "Of course."
Eifen walked into his sister's room. Aside from the stripes across the walls and floor, it was barren and bleak, with only a lone bed and a closet.
The girl was hiding under her bed, glowering up at Eifen. Like him, her short, choppy hair had a red ombre, but with white instead of brown. Her eyes were white, whereas his were a pale brown. She shared the same striped crown, but wore a dress with a diagonal white stripe down the middle with black ripped sleeves. He wore the same diagonal stripe across his blazer, as well as striped pants and red flats.
Did the girl have a name...? Of course she did. It was only customary. She was the princess, after all.
"Nell?" Eifen put on a smile; the smile he used to impress nobles. "What are you hiding for? There's nothing to be scared of."
Nell whimpered.
"Well, take your time," Eifen continued. "I'm here for you if you need me, okay?"
He stood back up, clasping his hands together. Nell moved out, just a little.
"... Eifen?" she croaked.
Her voice was so raspy; Eifen had to guess that was the prophecies' blame.
"Yes, dear sister?" he asked.
His voice was sweet and smooth... a voice that could calm down a crowd in a second.
"... you're stupid," Nell said. She hid back under the bed.
Eifen smiled.
"You're so charming, Nell," he chuckled. "I'll see you again soon!"
He left the room, biting his lip. He would normally never let ANYONE speak to him like that... but one thing Nell did not need was impatience. She would warm up to him soon enough... just like all those mindless nobles and aristocrats.
And so, Eifen visited his sister again. She hid in the closet this time, her leering eyes watching his every move.
"Tell me about yourself, Nell," he sat on her bed. "What are your hobbies?"
"Go away," Nell grumbled.
"I, personally, am a fan of politics," Eifen replied. "It's so fascinating, observing how socioeconomics adapt and change over the centuries."
Nell didn't say anything in response.
"I also enjoy playing the saxophone in my spare time," Eifen continued. "It's a lot of work, but it's certainly worth the pay off."
"You talk too much," Nell grunted.
"Why not fill in the chatter, then?" Eifen suggested. "Throw your hat in the ring. Perhaps then, I'll shut up for you."
Nell sighed, slumping further down.
"... I like sleeping..." she said.
"Well, that's a start," Eifen tilted his head. "But I'm sure that's something we all enjoy. What is something that is more unique to you?"
"Eating," Nell replied.
Eifen sighed.
Nell still refused to open up about any of her prophecies. Eifen sat next to his sister; she slumped against the wall, glowering at him.
"You said you like... eating," Eifen turned to face her. "What are your favourite foods?"
"Why do you keep coming to see me?" Nell groaned.
"Because," Eifen grabbed her shoulder, "I'm your brother. Why shouldn't I?"
Nell looked away. She bit her lip.
"... ice cream," she answered.
"A great choice, dear sister," Eifen placed his chin on his hand. "That happens to be one of my favourites, too. What else do you like?"
Nell shrugged. "Cake."
"We have so many things in common," Eifen chuckled.
Eifen smirked to himself. Finally, he was getting somewhere with this. His sister would smile as he entered the room, sometimes even crawling out of her hidey hole. She would sit next to him, the two exchanging friendly glances.
Eifen knew, at last... the time was right.
"So," Eifen raised his brow. "I heard you get prophecies?"
Nell nodded. "Sometimes."
"And what do they consist of?" Eifen asked, leaning against the wall.
"Well..." Nell tapped her chin. Suddenly, she began to shake. She fell on the ground, gripping onto her hair.
"Nell?" Eifen tilted his head.
"A BROTHER WHOSE COME, AND HEART HAS BEEN PLAYED," Nell thundered. "BUT SOMEONE UNEXPECTED WILL BE BETRAYED."
Nell gasped, breathing out. Eifen raised his brow.
"Betrayal, hmm?" he asked.
"I... I don't know who's gonna be betrayed," Nell stammered. "I'll only know after it's already happened."
Eifen cocked a brow.
"And what other prophecies have you told?" he asked.
Nell shrugged. "I don't remember them all... there was one about an intruder breaking in, a portrait being defaced, some kind of weird club, guards sleeping on the job... well, not like all of them come true."
An intruder, Eifen narrowed his eyes. I must warn Mother and Father...
"I see," Eifen replied, helping Nell stand up. "Thank you for telling me, dear sister. You really are so sweet, opening your heart space with me."
"Yeah," Nell blinked. "You too, big brother..."
"You finally got prophecies out of her?"
Eifen nodded at his parents. "Yes. All it took was a little patience."
"Wonderful," the queen placed her hands together, "we knew you'd be able to do it, Eifen! Keep it up."
"If only the guards could be more like you," the king scowled. "I've increased their hours, and yet they still slack behind..."
"Put in harsher regiments, Father," the prince replied. "We will teach them a lesson."
The king nodded. "But of course."
Like his mother said, Eifen was keeping it up. He continued to visit his sister numerous times.
"You have quite the fondness for sweets, don't you?" he chuckled, giving her a smile.
Nell nodded, guilty as charged. She was comfortable enough to sit right next to him, swinging her legs back and forth.
"Luckily, I got you this," Eifen handed her a lollipop.
Nell gasped, eagerly taking the candy. Her grin grew in size.
"I bet you'll have a prophecy about sweets," Eifen teased, gently.
Nell shrugged. "Well... I did get a prophecy about a brain freeze once..."
"Ah, that sure is a pain," Eifen laughed. "Surely, you have not recently predicted more severe prognostications?"
"A lot of storms..." Nell muttered. "A lot of darkness... none of it makes much sense..."
"Quite vague," Eifen sighed, standing up. "But that is how it is, hmm?"
He gazed at the barren window.
"Well, looks like it's time for my next class," Eifen said. "I'll see you later, dear sister."
"Wait..." Nell grabbed onto his sleeve, as he made his way towards the door. "I... I want to come too..."
"Oh, sorry, Nell," Eifen touched her shoulder. "You know you're not allowed to leave your room without permission from Mother and Father."
Nell tensed up. "But..."
"I'll be back later," Eifen gently pushed her back. "Don't get up in arms about it, alright?"
Nell watched him leave; he was wearing that large, fake grin. Her eyes went red.
"THE SMALL AMOUNT OF FREEDOM SLIPS AWAY," she thundered. "THE PRINCESS WILL FIND HERSELF LOCKED IN A CAGE."
Prince Eifen gave a courteous bow as the nobles left the palace. The weather was surprisingly peaceful: sunshine, and hardly a cloud in the sky.
"Hmm, Princess Nell predicted it was going to be stormy," the king huffed.
"And I've seen no sign of this so-called intruder, either..." the queen crossed her arms.
Eifen gazed at his parents. He, too, was curious about the mysterious intruder... if only Nell could explain more.
"Well, not all her prophecies come true," he replied.
"Perhaps," the queen sighed.
The prince made his way to his sister's room once again. He knocked on the door; no response.
"Nell?" he asked. "Come on now, don't be frivolous."
Still no response. Eifen sighed, opening up the door. Nell wasn't there.
Eifen chuckled. "Playing hide and seek, hmm?"
He looked under her bed, but she wasn't there. The same went for her closet.
Eifen began sweat-beading. Perhaps she just went to the bathroom...
That was right, Nell was allowed to leave to use the bathroom, as long as a guard accompanied her.
Eifen left her room; a guard was standing nearby.
"Where is Princess Nell?" he demanded.
The guard didn't respond.
"Answer me, peasant," Eifen growled, removing the guard's helmet.
The guard was unconscious; they were leaning against the wall, eyes closed, skin chalky. Bags were under their eyes.
"How pathetic," Eifen snapped. "I will deal with you soon, traitor."
He stormed off, looking all around. He turned to glare at other guards. They were slumping around as well.
"Find Princess Nell, or I'll have you all executed!" he barked.
"Yes sir!" they stammered, racing off.
Eifen continued making his way through the palace halls, a scowl hardening his features. He moved towards one of the castle doors. Stripes patterned the wall, striking across the large, silver door.
Just past that door was a large window, covered by a striped curtain. And who else was there other than Princess Nell, gazing all around the hall, her eyes wide. She was eyeing the window, her knees bent. Her arms were trembling with excitement.
"Nell," Eifen thundered.
Nell jumped, turning around.
"Eifen!" she waved at him. "... I know I'm not supposed to be out here, but-"
"How dare you leave your room without permission," Eifen stalked over to her, gripping her shoulder. "Do you not know the rules?"
"Eifen, that hurts..." Nell whimpered.
"I want you to remember this lesson," Eifen scowled, tightening his grip. "Do as you're told, and stay put."
Nell gritted her teeth. She gazed at the intensity in her brother's eyes.
"I just wanted to see the castle..." she muttered. "I thought we could, maybe, I don't know... hang out or something..."
"Don't be so daft," Eifen replied. "Our time together is decided by my schedule, not whenever you want to play games."
Nell blinked. Her eyes watered, only for a brief moment.
"... schedule..." she muttered. "It was all... organized...?"
"Of course it is," Eifen told her. "You stay in your room, deliver your prophecies, and I do my duties as the crown prince."
There was a tense silence. Nell looked away.
"... you don't actually care about me, do you?" she asked.
For once, Eifen felt his throat go dry. The king and queen stood behind him, looming above their daughter.
"THE BETRAYAL..." Nell's eyes went red. "THE CAGE... THE HEART HAS BEEN SHATTERED..."
"Don't you know why you were born, Princess Nell?" the king asked. "Everything we do... it's all for the kingdom. We all serve the crown; the crown that will eventually belong to Prince Eifen. You were created to aid our great kingdom. With your prophecies, we'll always be one step ahead of our enemies."
Nell's breathing grew heavier.
"We hoped to keep you in that nice little bedroom, but it seems that isn't going to work anymore," the queen sighed. "Guards, take her to the basement."
"No!" Nell cried out. She gazed at her big brother. "Eifen, please!! Help me!"
She reached out, guards coming in droves. Prince Eifen gazed down at her.
The heart has been shattered...
"A prince must always do what is best for his kingdom," he uttered.
"EIFEN!!!" Nell screamed.
She continued to scream his name as the guards dragged her away. Eifen stood there, completely stoic.
"Good work, Eifen," the king placed a hand on his shoulder. "You serve our kingdom well."
Of course he did. He would do anything for the kingdom.
She barely even resembled a person anymore. The princess would hiss and growl, glowering at anyone who grew close. She was more akin to a wild animal than anything else. The beloved princess... a caged beast, kept within the bowels of the palace.
Eifen did not feel guilty for what he had done. The only guilt he felt... was not helping his kingdom grow fast enough.
Eifen did not hear the screams, the guards torturing Nell, demanding her to reveal her prophecies. He did not think about the moments when she'd smiled with him, and how she had not smiled since. He did not think about how her eyes had turned a dangerous red, how she never slept. He did not think about how his actions had been the catalyst for all of this. He didn't think about the betrayal. No, he didn't think about his little sister at all. She was just a tool to the kingdom. She always had been.
When Eifen turned 18, his parents paired him up with a princess from the neighbouring kingdom. He had no love for her... but if it was for the kingdom, he would marry her. With another kingdom by their side, they would grow even stronger. Things were on track.
... then, at last, the intruder finally came.
"The princess has been kidnapped!"
"A crazy lady with blue hair took out the guards, helped some idiots escape too..."
"Princess Nell has been... kidnapped?" Eifen asked, gazing down at the guards. He was in the throne room, peering down at his inferiors.
"Yes!" one of them responded. "An intruder - a woman with blue hair, yellow eyes - came in, took out the prison warden, there was a guy with a horse, and..."
So it came true after all... Eifen grimaced.
Nell was gone. She was out in the wild, alongside her kidnapper. The kingdom had lost its princess, its source of prophecies.
"We shall set up bounties," the king boomed, standing from his throne. "If that intruder ever shows her face here again, the one who brings her in shall be handsomely compensated!"
Eifen narrowed his eyes. He would've gone after that intruder himself, but he had duties to attend to.
Well, maybe one day, he grimaced. In the meantime, however... I'll find another way to make my kingdom thrive.
No, of course he was not relieved she had escaped. He was only angry. His devotion was to his right to rule, and nothing else. This was his duty, after all... to serve the crown.
Chapter 3: Chapter 2 - The Princess
Notes:
Finally a chapter centred on the actual main character...
Chapter Text
Princess.
The daughter of the King and Queen of the Stripe Kingdom, the younger sister of the Crown Prince. That was her title.
But reality was different. She was not really a princess. She was a prisoner.
She certainly looked like a princess, a stripe crown adoring her head, as well as a striped dress. Her red hair was short and choppy, as sharp as anyone who caught her glare... and that was where the similarities ended.
She was stowed away in the depths of the Stripe Palace. Her food was served to her in dog bowls, as if she was an animal. The royals - her own family - only paid attention to her if they were looking for a prophecy.
To the kingdom, she was a princess, sure. The one who would predict the future and allow the Stripe Kingdom to thwart its enemies.
But in the twisted kingdom of Stripe there was no such thing as peace, only power. Enough simply was never enough.
She was a tool, a tool that would die and serve the crown, just as everyone in the kingdom did. Whether or not you were a simple manservant or the king himself, you would die the same fate.
But at least everyone else got to be treated like a human being.
It was her destiny, her purpose. Her fate. Nothing would ever change that.
“Dinner time, Princess Nell,” the guards approached, one of them carrying a food tray.
They placed the food inside her cage, backing up, as if she were going to strike. She got onto her knees, devouring the food with her bare hands. Crumbs and mess went everywhere, a raging dog trashing its own home.
Nell panted, leaning back. She shook her head, getting rid of the remaining crumbs. Oh how badly she wanted to nap, but her curse would not allow her to sleep. Her eyes were red and wide, her fingers twitching. She grabbed onto the cage bars.
THE STORM IS HERE… AN INTRUDER IS NEAR…
Nothing ever changed. Even when her family had let her live in her bedroom, she was still a prisoner, still a tool. Nobody really cared for her. That was it. Love did not exist.
She perked up; she heard some muffled shouting and footsteps. Were those the strange men who were due to be executed…?
“Pssst!”
Nell sat up; that voice wasn’t familiar. It belonged to a tall woman who was obscured by her brown cloak. Her golden eyes glimmered behind shadows. The woman was kneeled in front of the cage, a key in hand.
“Hi there, Princess,” she greeted. “I’m Calpernia of the Polygon Kingdom. I’ve heard all about how you’ve been caged up in this castle… and I want to help you escape. You see, I want to start a sanctuary for cursed princesses like you and myself.” She paused. “A life-changing experience made me realise how many people are in need… including you.”
The intruder…
Nell gazed up at her in surprise.
“Are you interested?” Calpernia asked. “You’ll get to live with me at my mansion, and…” She paused. “... well, I haven’t got all the activities sorted out yet, but we’ll do… something.”
Nell blinked.
“I promise,” Calpernia put a hand on her heart. “While you’re with me, I won’t let any harm come to you.”
Was this it? Was this freedom?
It had to be better than living in a cage.
Before she knew it, Nell was nodding away.
“Then say no more,” Calpernia opened up Nell’s cage using the key; who knows where she got that from.
“Hey, there’s someone over there!!”
“She must’ve freed those men as well!!”
Calpernia muttered a curse. She turned to Nell with a smile.
“Sorry, princess, this may be a twinge uncomfortable for a bit,” she apologised.
And before Nell could register anything else, she was bundled into some fabric. She let out a hiss, her vision completely obscured. Calpernia was dragging her out; she heard angry shouting and weapons clashing. She wiggled around, feeling someone whoosh right by her.
“Nearly there,” Calpernia’s voice came from outside. “Just a little longer, princess!”
A screech of pain was right beside her. Someone went flying into the ground. The air was cold and icy; she heard more voices.
“Your highness?” a man’s voice. “You have the princess?”
“She’s in here,” Calpernia replied. “Quick, Curtis, we gotta go!!”
Nell felt herself being thrown down.
“Hurry, your highness!” shouted the man known as Curtis.
There was the whinny of a horse. And finally, finally, things seemed to smooth out.
Nell shivered; her heart was racing a thousand miles an hour. What in the world had Calpernia dragged her through?
Calpernia breathed out in relief. “Princess…! Princess, you’re safe now! You can come out-”
Nell sat up, hissing at her. Calpernia jumped back in shock, bracing against the carriage wall.
“M-more members…” she uttered. “I think we might need more members…”
Nell finally calmed down, hanging out in the corner of the carriage. Outside, Curtis controlled the horses, furrowing his brow in concern.
Nell hid underneath the chair, covered in shadows. She glowered up at Calpernia, watching her every move.
Princess Calpernia seemed nice… but Nell couldn’t be too sure. Her trust had already been shattered once before. She would not give out chances so easily.
Calpernia grimaced at Nell. It was like having a wild animal in the carriage.
Calpernia sweated-beaded. “So… um… looking forward to seeing the mansion?”
Nell hissed again.
“Great to hear it,” Calpernia deadpanned.
The carriage had stopped deep inside a large, creepy forest. Sitting there was a moderately large mansion, although the back was quite unfinished compared to the front.
“Your highnesses, we have arrived!” Curtis declared.
“Here we are, Princess!” Calpernia grinned.
She stepped out of the carriage, helping Nell get out as well. Nell gazed at all the trees and bushes; the looming darkness surrounding the large mansion.
“I’ll give you a tour,” Calpernia stepped forward. “This is the-“
Nell hissed, immediately racing into a bush. She glared at Calpernia and Curtis, red eyes narrowed.
“Or, you know, make yourself at home,” Calpernia sighed. She shook it off. “Well, nevermind. It’s fine. I don’t want you to feel stressed here, Princess.”
She was not a fool; she knew what Nell had been through. She was far from a normal princess.
“Curtis, can you prepare some food for us?” Calpernia asked.
“Of course, your majesty,” Curtis bowed.
While Curtis worked on the meals, Calpernia set up a small dining table. She placed two seats towards it.
Nell stayed put, continuing to watch Calpernia’s every move.
Curtis came out, holding out two plates of freshly-made pasta. He placed the plates on the table, as well as cutlery.
“Thank you,” Calpernia nodded at him.
She held up her fork. She did not say anything, except giving Nell a tiny smile. She tucked into her food, which was delicious as always.
Nell stared at it, her body shivering. She bowed her head.
Calpernia sighed. She stood up, grabbing the other plate of pasta. Nell hissed as she approached; Calpernia placed it near her bush.
As she walked away, she grinned as she heard the sounds of Nell devouring the meal. She gazed over her shoulder; Nell yawned, blinking heavily.
“The bedroom’s all set up?” Calpernia asked Curtis.
Curtis nodded.
“Great,” Calpernia grinned. “Let Nell go there in her own time. As for me…” She put her hands on her hips. “It’s time to find some new members for this sanctuary… the Cursed Princess Sanctuary!”
Chapter 4: Chapter 3 - The Club
Chapter Text
For the next few days, Nell stayed in the bushes. Calpernia was fine with it; she knew better than to rush Nell into anything.
The Stripe Princess tentatively visited the mansion itself. Her bedroom had been set up; it was situated right at the back of the mansion. Her room was small but simple with a large bed; a duvet for her to hide under. She spent most of her time there, simply sleeping. Otherwise, she stayed in the bushes, which was her other favourite place to hide.
"Here you are, Miss Nell," Curtis bowed down to her hiding spot, offering her a plate of food.
"... thanks," Nell croaked out.
"... so, it's pretty quiet right now, but I'm working to invite new members soon!"
Nell sat up. Calpernia was walking through the club, a princess following her.
"If you say so..." the princess muttered.
The princess was a petite girl with pale skin, and long, dark gray hair. She wore a large pair of glasses with a golden bow behind her head. She had on a flowy pink and yellow dress.
"Sit down and help yourself, Monika," Calpernia gestured at the table. "Curtis will bring out some snacks!"
Monika did so, sitting at the table. Curtis brought out the aforementioned snacks.
"Welcome to the sanctuary," he greeted.
"H... hi," Monika whimpered.
Nell glowered at her, catching her attention. Monika jumped, suddenly transforming into a crow.
Nell crept further into the bushes. Another cursed princess...
"Oh, hello, Nell!" Calpernia waved at Nell. "This is Princess Monika of the Quilt Kingdom. She's our newest member of the sanctuary."
Monika the crow squawked, hiding behind the food plate.
"Hi," Nell waved, quickly.
Monika shivered. Calpernia massaged her brow.
"We still need more members..." she muttered.
THE NEW ONES WILL COME, AND THE OLD WILL DEPART.
Nell collapsed; her vision was blurry, just how it always was after a premonition came. Her head thumped.
"Nell!" Calpernia raced over to her.
Nell rolled over, nearing a sharp stick. Calpernia quickly removed it, signaling Curtis over. Pillows were under his arms.
Nell flopped onto the pillows. Calpernia eyed her with concern.
"How are you feeling?" she asked.
Nell shrugged. "Tired."
"Do you want some help getting to your room?" Calpernia offered a hand.
Nell shook her head. She slumped into the pillows, closing her eyes once again.
New members came, and new members thrived. Following Monika was a princess named Syrah, who was cursed with a Pinocchio nose, a princess named Thermidora who was a lobster cursed into a human form, and a princess named Abbi who was cursed to look like an old lady even though she was only 15.
The sanctuary had changed its name to the Cursed Princess Club, if only because the members proclaimed that sanctuary sounded... a bit weird.
Now that the club had more members - still, even if not many - more activities could be held. Starting with lectures from Calpernia - who the club members had begun referring to as simply Prez.
Nell didn't want to join. She didn't trust these people, no matter how nice they seemed. She preferred to just stay in the darkness, watching every little move. Or sleeping.
THE OLD WILL DEPART.
That prophecy has been keeping her awake for days. Her eyes grew more red with every moment. They didn't trust her either.
Do I really belong here?
Prez never had a problem with Nell's hesitation. She smiled, telling Nell she was welcome to join if she liked, or do her own thing.
The Stripe Princess glowered, spying on the members. She was at the very back of the lecture, sitting by herself. Her red eyes were narrowed. Monika whimpered, clinging onto Syrah's arm. She avoided Nell's piercing glare.
"Why is she so creepy...?" she asked.
"Creepy?" Thermidora held out her pincers. "Her glaring red eyes remind me of my beloved Benedict's beautiful red claws!"
She sighed, dreamily.
"Hmmm," Abbi turned her head, eyeing Nell with caution. "Hi!"
Nell hissed.
"AHH!" Abbi jumped, clinging onto Syrah's other arm.
Syrah chuckled. "Whoa, girls, chill out! The lecture hasn't even started yet."
Nell slumped back into her chair. She hugged herself.
They needed to stop staring, stop judging. She was a dangerous creature in their eyes, a worrisome tangent. She would never fit in. Even among the cursed, she was a curse. That was all she'd ever be.
President Calpernia finally arrived, wearing a big grin.
"Who's ready for the CPC's first lecture?!" Prez spread her arms.
"Why do we have to get a lecture?!" Abbi groaned. "It's like being at school!"
"There's so much to talk about," Prez retorted. "Us cursed princesses have a lot of lessons to learn!"
"Abbi has a point," Syrah interrupted. "Who wants to go to a lecture?"
"You'd be surprised," Prez shook her head. "Everyone has a different way of learning. Lectures may be helpful for some people. And plus... you've never had one of my lectures."
She was smiling sweetly, with just an edge of danger.
"I think that's a great starting point for our first lecture," she clapped. "We're all the same, but we're all a little different."
She stared at Nell, who bowed her head.
"We're still princesses, despite our curses," Prez assured the club members. "We don't need some Prince Charming to tell us that."
"Yeah!" Abbi agreed. "Instead, we need a tall hot woman in a pantsuit!"
Prez looked away. "Uh..."
"She's not wrong," Syrah chuckled.
Thermidora wiped her forehead with her claw. "I was going to say a song of the sea!"
"I wanna go home..." Monika whimpered.
"Ahem," Prez cleared her throat. "As I was saying, even if we are a little different from... most princesses, that doesn't mean we're undeserving of love. We all belong somewhere, and we all deserve to be loved."
Nell stared at her lap. There had been no love from her family; her brother had only pretended to care about her. Her parents hadn't even gone to that level.
Prez, at the very least, had some concern for her. But what of the other members? They thought she was creepy... didn't they?
A curse among the cursed.
Prez was smiling once again. "So don't worry about other princesses. Because they're different from us, and we're different from them. Even if we never get a Prince Charming, we'll still have each other."
"Aw..." Syrah put a hand on her heart, Thermidora tearing up.
Abbi raised a hand.
"Yes, Abbi?" Prez asked.
"Can I bring my school friends here?" Abbi asked.
Prez sighed. "Looks like I'm gonna have to set up some ground rules."
The club had grown a little bigger. It now had a male member in the form of Prince Saffron and his cursed hand, whom Prez had assured that more male members would be joining soon. Alongside him was the quiet Princess Renée and the frogs that would spill from her lips.
Princess Renée mainly kept to herself, much like Nell. She would smile and wave, spending her time with the swans by the lake.
Prince Saffron, on the other hand, spent his time complaining about things. More often than not about the club's name and his lack of a beard. He seemed to take up most of the club's attention, alongside Syrah.
Nell spent more and more time in her room. It was just as her prophecy said; she was fading into the background. Her prophecies continued to widen her bloodshot eyes.
There was a knock on her door.
"Hey, Nell?" Prez asked. "It's just me. We've been having some ice-cream if you want any."
Nell felt a jolt.
"I see," Eifen replied, helping Nell stand up. "Thank you for telling me, dear sister. You really are so sweet, opening your heart space with me."
"Yeah," Nell blinked. "You too, big brother..."
"... okay," Nell muttered.
Prez opened the door, offering Nell a bowl of ice-cream.
"Thanks," Nell took the bowl.
"No worries," Prez grinned at her. "If there's anything you want to talk about, I'm here."
"I got a prophecy last night," Nell told her.
"Oh?" Prez turned around.
"Someone is going to drop a banana peel," Nell told her.
"Thanks for telling me," Prez grinned. "I'll keep that in mind."
She turned to leave.
"... Prez," Nell's voice was croaky, hoarse.
"Yes?" Prez turned around.
"Your lecture about love was great," Nell looked at her bed. "Thank you."
Prez gave her a gentle nod. "Of course. I'm glad it helped."
She left Nell alone once more. Nell hugged herself.
What was she talking about? There was no love for her.
Chapter 5: Chapter 4 - Noticed
Notes:
Jolie is here let's go
Chapter Text
"Hi there, I'm Princess Jolie. I noticed you sitting here all alone... are you okay?"
It couldn't be so. Someone had actually noticed Nell... and said hello?
Nell recognised the princess above her; she was the newest member of the Cursed Princess Club. Her name was Jolie, and she was from the Lace Kingdom. She had no eyes; her sockets were simply large, empty holes. She had shoulder-length grey hair framing her face, wearing a white floor-length short-sleeved dress lined with white lace. On her head was a purple tiara decorated with white lace, white flower earrings, and a purple ribbon tied around her neck.
She had certainly unnerved some of the members with her lack of eyes, but her kind smile had made them warm up to her. She was hauntingly beautiful, Nell had to admit. She was almost like a porcelain doll. And now, the princess stood in front of her, wearing the same gentle smile.
Beautiful...
Nell hissed, lunging backwards. No, she wouldn't fall for her tricks. Monika jumped, turning into a crow.
"Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you," Jolie apologised.
"... you didn't," Nell replied. "It's just... I'm not very popular here."
Of course. Nell was seated at the back of the club as always, away from the other members.
"Really?" Jolie gasped. "Well... that's alright. Being in the spotlight does get exhausting." She kept smiling. "Do you mind if I sit?"
"..." Nell looked away. She shifted in her chair.
Jolie sat down next to Nell, getting out her needles and thread. She placed them on the desk.
"Why are you talking to me?" Nell asked.
"I just wanted to say hello," Jolie replied, simply.
Nell blinked. She stared at Jolie, who was stitching a mask.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"Oh, just finishing up a new eye mask," Jolie replied. "I've already made a few, this is another one for my collection."
She showed Nell a few of her eye masks. She placed one over her sockets; it gave the illusion of her having normal pretty pink eyes.
"You must miss your eyes," Nell noted.
"Not really," Jolie admitted. "I mean, I barely remember what it was like having them. These eye masks are more so just for fun." She tilted her head. "And when I need to be around normal people."
Nell gazed over the masks. Normal people.
She realised how little she'd been exposed to the people of her own kingdom, despite serving them all as their oracle.
"Does your family hate your curse?" Nell asked.
"Oh, they don't really care anymore," Jolie replied. "They did at first, but they've gotten used to it. Besides... Mom and Dad said my eyes saved the whole kingdom. So I think it was a worthy sacrifice. I'd give up an arm and a leg if it meant my people could eat for another week."
She was smiling, no pain, no heartbreak. Nell had to wonder what it was like, being so willing to give up so much for her kingdom. More importantly, the voluntary choice to do so. Jolie would've done anything for people, with a genuine smile on her face.
Jolie continued working on her eyemasks. Nell watched the meticulous craft, the needle and thread intertwining. Once again, she found herself wondering why Jolie was so willing to talk to her. She didn't seem unnerved at all.
Nell bowed her head, thinking of her life back at the palace. Had her brother not done the same thing, toyed with her feelings only to reveal he was no better than their parents?
"What about you?" Jolie asked, suddenly. "What's your curse?"
Nell found herself hissing once again. A sharp pain went through her forehead.
"Oh, sorry," Jolie waved her hands. "No pressure. I'm just curious."
Nell looked away. Jolie offered her a teeny lace purse.
"I made this a little while ago," she told her. "You're welcome to put whatever you want inside!"
"This is for me...?" Nell asked.
"Of course," Jolie told her.
"But I didn't do anything," Nell replied.
"You don't have to," Jolie assured her. "It's a gift."
"A gift..." Nell repeated, slowly.
"You've never gotten a gift before?" Jolie asked.
Nell shook her head. Jolie tilted her head.
"Then I hope this will be the first of many gifts you'll receive," she gave Nell a gentle beam.
Nell felt her heart racing. She glowered, feeling the urge to hiss once again. She pictured her family grinning down at her, leaving her in a cage.
"Who would want to give gifts to me," she uttered.
"You'd be surprised," Jolie replied. "Don't be so harsh on yourself."
Nell grimaced, thinking of the prophecy once again. It had not been fulfilled yet. She turned away, hugging herself.
THE NEW ONES WILL COME, AND THE OLD WILL DEPART.
She hissed at Jolie. "You don't get it."
"Well..." Jolie trailed off. "Hold on, I never learned your name."
"Nell," Nell got out.
"Nell," Jolie replied. "That's a nice name."
"I know what you're trying to do," Nell grumbled.
"Huh?" Jolie asked.
"You don't need to pretend," Nell hissed.
"What do you mean?" Jolie tilted her head.
Love was cruel, love was painful. It was a deceptive beast. Nell would not fall victim to it again.
Nell got up, hiding in the bushes. She glowered at Jolie, her eyes glowing red.
"Oh..." Jolie shrugged. "That's alright, I'll leave you be."
Nell hated that smile. She hated those gentle words. No no no. She wouldn't fall victim again. She would keep her freedom.
Suddenly, a sharp pain raced through her forehead. She screeched, clutching her temples.
"Nell!" Jolie stood up, racing over. "Are you ok-"
"LEAVE ME ALONE!" Nell roared, shoving her.
Jolie fell to her knees, Nell crying out in pain. The other members came over, shock on their faces.
"Nell!" Syrah cried. "Are you alright?!"
"Stay with us, Nell!" Thermidora sobbed.
"NELL!" Prez came over, kneeling beside Nell. "Wait... are you having a prophecy?"
"STOP!!" Nell roared out.
Curtis raced over, holding pillows and blankets. Nell hissed, rolling over. Prez offered a hand.
"Don't worry, Nell, we're here!" Prez assured her.
"SOMEONE IN THIS CLUB... WILL GET A NASTY SURPRISE." Nell thundered.
And she passed out once again, eyes closed.
Chapter 6: Chapter 5 - New Girl
Chapter Text
At first, when Princess Jolie had been invited to join the 'Cursed Princess Club', she hadn't been interested. She was perfectly fine at her home in the Lace Kingdom. Her curse hadn't affected her how the kingdom treated her, and her parents loved and accepted her no matter what.
... but once she thought about it, perhaps there were other cursed princesses in need of a friend? In that case, she was more than happy to help out. Everyone deserved a friend in a time of need.
So she agreed to pay a simple visit to the Cursed Princess Club. She waved at the spiders in her room, weaving their web across the windows. Before long, she got a letter in the mail, confirming her invitation to join. The President of the club would be paying her a visit.
Jolie perked up; a woman was standing outside, below her balcony.
"Oh!" Jolie grinned down at her. "You must be President Calpernia."
"Yep," Calpernia returned the grin. "I tried to sneak in through the back, but the doors are almost impossible to get through."
"My parents don't want to take any chances with demons sneaking in," Jolie chuckled. "You can come through the front door."
"The club's meant to be a secret," Calpernia told her. "I don't want anyone other than you to find out."
"Oh, my parents already know you're coming," Jolie replied. "I just told them I'm going to meet some friends in the Pastel Kingdom."
"... fair enough," Calpernia sighed.
"Welcome, welcome!" The Lace King and Queen beamed at Calpernia, who was walking beside Jolie. She'd begrudgingly come through the front door, dressed in her brown cloak. Jolie, meanwhile, had placed on one of her eye masks.
"You must be Jolie's new friend!" The King clapped. "So great to meet you!"
"Would you like some tea and cake?" the Queen offered.
"Thank you for the offer, your majesties, but we'd better get going," Calpernia nodded at Jolie.
"Ah, we understand," the King nodded. He wrapped Jolie in a big hug. "See you soon, dear. Have a great time!"
"We'll miss you," the queen added, joining in the hug.
Jolie beamed at her parents. "See you guys later!"
She followed Calpernia out of the Lace Castle, where a carriage was waiting. A butler was standing beside it.
"Your highnesses," he bowed.
"Jolie, meet Curtis, my butler," Calpernia gestured at the butler.
"Nice to meet you," Jolie greeted him.
"The pleasure is all mine," Curtis responded.
Jolie got into the carriage alongside Calpernia.
"That went better than I expected," Calpernia admitted. "I thought your parents would kick me out or something. That has happened a few times before." She shivered.
Jolie shook her head. "Oh no! They wouldn't. They know you're a friend."
"That's refreshing," Calpernia admitted. "I know it looks suspicious, but keeping it secret is for the safety of the members." She breathed out. "Anyway, you excited to see the club?"
"Sure," Jolie replied.
"You don't sound too sure," Calpernia told her.
"I'll just see how it goes," Jolie shrugged.
Admittedly, she still wasn't sure, but she couldn't judge before she arrived.
"Well, if you don't like it, we won't force you to stay," Calpernia assured her.
Jolie nodded. "Understood."
At last, the butler and princesses arrived in the middle of the haunted forest, just behind the Pastel Palace. Sitting there was the mansion that hosted the club.
Jolie admired the large mansion... even if parts of it seemed a bit unfinished. A group of princesses were out the front, laughing and having fun.
"Welcome!" Calpernia grinned, spreading her arms.
She led Jolie into the courtyard, beside the mansion.
"Hey everyone!" Calpernia clapped. "This is Jolie of the Lace Kingdom! She'll just be looking around, so make her feel welcome!"
One of the princesses gasped, turning into a crow. Another one, with a rather long nose, stepped forward.
"Heya," she greeted. "I'm Princess Syrah of the Metallic Kingdom." She gestured at the crow. "That's Monika, she's just a little shy."
"I'm Abbi of the Neon Kingdom!" croaked an older lady.
"I am Thermidora!" a woman with lobster claws jumped in.
"Name's Saffron," a fairly masculine-looking princess stepped forward. "I'm..." She trailed off.
"What is it?" Jolie asked.
"There's... a piece of thread in your eye," Saffron replied.
"Oh, is there?" Jolie removed her eye mask, taking out the thread. "Thanks for telling me, Princess Saffron!"
The members stepped back, curling up in disgust. Jolie smirked.
"And I thought Renée's curse was freaky..." Abbi muttered.
"Wait... did you call me PRINCESS?!" Saffron shouted. "I'm a man!!"
"Prez told you to be nice, Saffron," Syrah reminded him.
Monika squawked, hiding behind Calpernia - or Prez, as she was known. She turned back into her human self.
"So... you have no eyes?" Abbi asked.
"Nope," Jolie reached into her sockets, "which means I can keep all sorts of things in here."
Jolie pulled out a fork. Some of the members stepped back again.
"Ohhh, nice," Abbi nodded. "I wish I could have extra pockets like that!"
The other members just stared at her.
"Ahem," Prez clapped. "We're glad to have you here, Jolie! How about I show you around?"
Jolie followed the tall woman, gazing over the mansion. So far, she wasn't sure about the club... the other members seemed to be doing just fine.
That was when a certain princess caught her eye. She had red hair, a striped dress, a striped crown, and blood red eyes. She was hiding in the bushes, spying on Jolie from a mile away.
Jolie tilted her head. Who is that...?
Prez took her inside the mansion.
"Here's the main room," Prez told her. "This is where we have our parties and indoor sleepovers."
Jolie gazed around the spacious room; a few pillows were in the corner, as well as some tables.
"Down here is where all of the rooms are," Prez continued, pointing down the hall. "Most of our members stay in one of these."
"I see," Jolie nodded, eyeing the selection of doors.
"The kitchen's this way," Prez pointed ahead. "Feel free to grab a snack."
Jolie peeked her head into the kitchen; Curtis was inside, making lunch. She had to wonder how he'd got in there so fast.
"Bathrooms are that way," Prez continued, "and that's the back out there!"
"Ohh," Jolie nodded, putting her hands behind her back.
"You want to go anywhere in particular?" Prez asked.
Jolie shook her head. "I think I'll just go back outside."
Jolie sighed, eyeing the small group of royalty.
"Come on, now!" Thermidora reached out her claws. "Let me tell you tales of my homeland!"
"I CAN'T TAKE ANYMORE SINGING!" Saffron shouted, backing away.
Syrah chuckled in her hand, Abbi joining in. Even Monika was suppressing a giggle.
"Everyone seems rather happy here," Jolie noted.
"That's what I wanted," Prez spread her arms. "A place for everyone to feel safe and happy."
That was the case for everyone...
They all seem pretty happy, Jolie thought. I guess they don't need my help after all.
Well... everyone except the striped princess sitting all by herself.
"I'll be holding a lecture about the inaccuracies of fairy tales soon," Prez told Jolie. "You're welcome to listen in!"
"Um..." Jolie looked away.
"There'll be free wine," Syrah told her, winking.
"Only if you guys actually listen to my lecture," Prez retorted.
Jolie shrugged. "I suppose I'll stay a little longer..."
The other princesses cheered.
"Are you gonna join the club?!" Abbi gasped, eyes wide.
The other members were staring at her, eagerly. Jolie couldn't help but smile.
"We'll see," Jolie replied, gently.
In some ways, Jolie already felt at home. But someone did not.
She stared at the lonely princess. She couldn't stand it anymore; she had to go over and say hello.
"Hi there, I'm Princess Jolie. I noticed you sitting here all alone... are you okay?"
Chapter 7: Chapter 6 - Stay
Chapter Text
She came back.
Nell was surprised, not that she would admit it. She didn't think anyone would come back. Not for her.
But Jolie was there, and she was here, standing in front of Nell.
Nell grimaced. She couldn't do this. Not anymore. Her eyes were even more red. Her curse had kept her awake for far too long.
"Heya," Jolie knelt down. "Are you doing okay?"
Nell felt her cheeks burning. She turned away.
"I told you to leave me alone..." she uttered.
Jolie frowned. "Oh, sorry... I just wanted to make sure you were alright."
Nell hid her face.
"Thanks, I guess," she muttered, "but you can keep it."
Jolie raised her brow. She sighed, nodding.
"I won't bother you anymore," she walked away.
THE NEW ONES WILL COME, AND THE OLD WILL DEPART.
Nell felt her heart clench. Was that a sign?
Jolie waved at the other members.
"How's Nell?" Syrah asked. "Poor girl's seemed pretty stressed lately."
"We'd talk to her, but she..." Monika trailed off. "Well..."
"She likes to do her own thing," Jolie replied, turning away. "As long as you all are here... I'm sure she'll be okay."
"AUGH!" Saffron shouted. Thermidora's claw had got stuck on his cursed hand. Syrah and Prez came over, working to pry it off.
"That was the nasty surprise," Nell muttered, rubbing her head. Well, at least she could sleep somewhat easier.
But the other prophecy still hadn't been fulfilled. The old had not departed.
"Weirdos," muttered the newest club member - Princess Aurelia of the Gilded Kingdom. She turned away, brushing her hair over her shoulder. Princess Renée offered her a friendly smile.
"Calm down, guys," Prez ordered, waving her hands. "Aurelia, come on over! We're about to do a group activity."
The members - excluding Nell of course - gathered into a circle. Saffron waved his sore hand.
"Is everyone here?" Prez looked around.
"... I don't see Jolie," Monika gasped.
"Jolie?" Prez called out. "Are you here?"
Jolie came out, her belongings slung over her shoulder. Prez gazed at her in surprise.
"Jolie, what's wrong?" She asked.
"Oh, well..." Jolie shrugged. "Don't get me wrong, this place is wonderful... but I don't really have any reason to stay here. So I'll be taking my leave."
The members - including Nell - gasped.
"You... you're leaving?!" Monika whimpered.
"Girl, wait!" Syrah added. "Is it because I didn't give you my advice?"
"Did I do something wrong?!" Abbi sobbed.
"No, no..." Jolie shook her head. "You all are lovely. It's just... I don't get anything out of being here. It's a personal thing."
"I..." Prez trailed off. "Well, it is your choice. You're not forced to stay if you don't want to."
Nell felt a queasiness in her stomach. Her head was pounding.
"Oh dear," Thermidora sobbed. "We'll miss you, Jolie!"
"Well... see ya," Aurelia waved, standing next to Renée.
"Goodbye!!" Monika sobbed.
"What'd I do?!" Saffron jumped in.
"Are you sure you don't wanna stay?" Syrah asked, raising her brow.
"Thanks but no thanks," Jolie turned away. "Good luck, everyone!"
And with that, she walked away. Nell felt the sickness getting worse. Despite the fatigue, she felt herself stand up. She crept through the bushes, following after the Lace Princess.
"Wait..." she croaked.
Jolie turned around, removing her eye mask.
"Yes?" she asked.
"You..." Nell trailed off. "You really want to leave?"
"Well, as I said, there's not much for me here," Jolie admitted.
Nell felt the pain in her heart growing.
"I see..." she looked down. "Well... it was nice, while it lasted. Thank you."
Jolie raised her brow in surprise once more. She nodded.
"Of course," she grinned. "It was fun being here!"
And she turned away again. Nell felt her heart thumping.
"Wait!!" her voice croaked again.
Jolie turned back.
"It's my fault..." Nell looked away. "... isn't it? I made you feel this way."
Jolie knelt down, her hair blowing in the breeze.
"Well, you said you wanted me to leave you alone," she replied, "so that's what I'm doing."
"Don't leave just because of me!!" Nell hissed.
"What if I only wanted to stay because of you?" Jolie uttered.
Nell hesitated. She stepped back, wiping her hair out of her face.
"I..." she trailed off. Her voice was drying up.
"Do you want me to stay?" Jolie asked.
"Other than Calpernia and Curtis, you're the only one who's really spoken to me," Nell admitted.
"Maybe you need to give others a chance as well," Jolie replied. "Everyone here is kind. They understand you like to do your own thing."
Nell clenched the grass between her fingers. She thought of the times the members had reached out for her, especially Calpernia. She had never pressured Nell into anything.
Was it possible for people to be so kind, without ulterior motives?
Nell stood up. She peered into Jolie's hollow sockets. Despite her lack of eyes, Jolie saw right through her.
"Let's... have some lunch," Nell said.
"Sounds good to me," Jolie beamed.
The two princesses walked back towards the club, sitting at the tea table. The other members gathered around.
"Jolie?" Prez asked. "I thought you were leaving!"
"And Nell is here as well!" Thermidora gasped.
"Great to have you join us, girl!" Syrah chuckled.
Nell felt her cheeks burning.
"I thought I'd stay for just one more lunch," Jolie spoke up.
"Well, we're glad to have you," Prez nodded.
Curtis came out, carrying trays of food on both arms. He placed them in front of the princesses. It was a delicious selection of tea and cakes.
Nell grimaced; so many eyes were on her. She hid her face between her arms.
"You want to move?" Jolie asked her, quietly.
Nell nodded.
"Thank you," she said, picking up her tea and cakes. She and Jolie moved over to the bushes.
"Oh..." Monika frowned.
"That's what makes them happy," Prez spread her arms. "Nell's been through a lot. She deserves the space."
Jolie and Nell snacked on their tea and cakes.
"This is pretty good," Jolie wiped her mouth using an embroidered napkin.
Nell stared at it. Jolie held out a clean one, handing it to her. Nell wiped her face. She placed the napkin inside the gift bag Jolie had given her.
"Oh, you're using it!" Jolie clapped. "I've got more if you need them."
"Thank you," Nell waved it off.
The two continued to eat their tea and cakes. They were surrounded by a peaceful silence.
"Don't leave," Nell got out.
"Oh?" Jolie asked.
"I'm sorry," Nell bowed her head. "I... I want you to stay."
Jolie just gave her a gentle smile.
"Well, of course I'll stay," she said. "I've got a friend here, don't I?"
"A friend..." the word felt foreign on Nell's tongue.
"Is that okay?" Jolie asked.
"Yes, yes," Nell nodded. "You're my friend too."
Jolie held up her teacup. "Cheers to our friendship!"
"Cheers," Nell found herself smiling.
She gasped. The prophecy! It had been fulfilled. Her headache, her bleary eyes were gone at last.
Of course... the ones that departed were her own anxieties. And the new... that was the friend she was finally opening herself up to.
Chapter 8: Chapter 7 - Alone
Chapter Text
Nell still kept to the bushes, where Jolie would sit down and join her if she wasn't participating in any club activities. The two had watched the club recruit a few more members; before long, the club had at least 20 participants.
It seemed Jolie was friends with everyone in the club. Nell couldn't help the feeling of... uneasy anger... whenever she saw a club member getting close to Jolie.
She waved it off. Why was she so... jealous? She and Jolie were just friends, after all.
She felt another surge of anger when Syrah put her arm around Jolie. They were so close.
Jolie was her friend. Her best friend!
She wasn't jealous, was she...?
After finally getting away from the others, Jolie joined Nell. Nell glowered at her.
"What's wrong?" Jolie noticed Nell's hostility almost immediately.
"Nothing!" Nell hissed.
"You're all red," Jolie tilted her head. "Do you have a fever?"
"No!" Nell sunk deeper into the bushes. Her face was burning. Why did Jolie make her feel like this...?
Jolie reached into her sockets. She offered Nell a cookie.
"Here," she said. "Curtis just made these."
Nell cautiously accepted, eyeing Jolie. She blinked heavily, trying to stop blushing.
"You want to go to your room?" Jolie asked.
Nell nodded. She stood up, turning to walk away. She gazed back, nodding at Jolie.
The two headed away from the other members, entering the mansion. Nell headed into her room. She peered at Jolie from a crack in the door. She gestured for her to come in.
Jolie raised her brow, stepping inside the small room. The bed had quite a few pillows, as well as a cosy-looking duvet. Of course, they all had a stripe motif that matched Nell's outfit.
Curtis had left food for Nell on her desk, as well as a glass of water. There were spare blankets in the cupboards, pillows bundled in the corner.
A note was on Nell's desk.
Don't be afraid to ask for help, Curtis' handwriting.
"This is a lovely room," Jolie told Nell.
"Thanks," Nell sat on her bed.
Jolie sat beside her.
"Sorry," Nell muttered. "I keep you away from the others."
"Oh, I don't mind!" Jolie waved a hand. "I love hanging out with you."
Love...
Nell grimaced. That word pierced her very soul.
"It is a lot of fun getting to be around the others," Jolie admitted, "but it's just as much fun being with you."
Nell stared at her. "You mean that?"
Jolie nodded. "Of course!"
Nell felt her heart rate increase. Her fatigue flickered in and out. She grimaced, slipping into her bed.
"Well, if you need anything, come and get me," Jolie waved. "Or anyone else! We're all here for you."
Nell watched Jolie from behind her duvet.
"I don't get it," she muttered.
"Hmm?" Jolie asked.
"Why you like hanging out with me," Nell replied.
Jolie gave her another smile. "Because you're kind, thoughtful, caring... and fun to talk to."
Nell blinked. She felt her cheeks burning again. She hid under her blankets.
"See you soon," Jolie waved, before disappearing.
Nell stared at the ceiling. Her heart kept racing. She yawned, sipping some of the water on her bedside table.
And finally, she began to fall asleep.
Nell opened her eyes. She was stuck in her cage, a plate of food in front of her. Striped guards sneered, cackling.
Animal... slave... hostage...
Princess...
He was there again.
Prince Eifen leaned against the cage, glaring down at his sister stuck inside. The king and queen stood behind him.
"Things never change, little sister," Eifen taunted. "We will find you."
Nell hissed, backing against the wall. Her brother's face twisted into a distorted smile.
"And when I do," the prince's eyes glowed, "you'll be our oracle... forever."
Nell sat up, her heart thumping. She leaned back, slipping under her blankets once again.
The sickness was creeping up. Dizziness made her head sway. She sipped some of the water Curtis had left.
She screeched, her head exploding in pain.
UNTIL THE STORM COMES, THE HORRORS CONTINUE
Her eyes stung. She reached out, but there was no one there.
She was alone.
Pain raced through her. Nothing ever changed. She was alone... forever.
"Nell!!"
Suddenly, there was banging at her door. The members of the CPC barged in, concern on their faces. At the forefront was Prez, as well as Jolie.
"Nell, are you okay?" Prez held out a hand. "We heard you screaming!"
Nell blinked. She looked away.
"Just a prophecy," she uttered.
The horrors continue...
Jolie kneeled beside her. "Nell... don't be afraid to tell us anything."
Nell eyed the members of the club. They all looked scared... for her?
She wasn't alone...
"You okay, girl?" Syrah asked.
"I've got some pesticide!" Saffron held up a can of said stuff.
"You want my pillows?" Abbi suggested.
Even the shy Monika was there, hiding behind the door.
Nell felt her cheeks burning once more. She hissed, diving under the covers.
"Go away!" she spat. "I'm fine!"
"Alright, alright, settle down," Prez waved her hands. "Nell, as long as you're alright, do you want to be alone?"
"... yeah," Nell replied.
"Then let's go, girls," Prez waved her hands, leading everyone out of the room.
"HEY!" Saffron snapped.
"Let's go, everyone," Prez corrected.
Jolie was about to leave, but Nell grabbed onto her arm.
"What's up?" Jolie asked.
"Stay," Nell told her, "just for a little longer."
Jolie nodded. She sat on Nell's bed, grinning at her friend.
"Get some good rest, Nell," she told her.
"I can't," Nell sighed. "My curse... and I get nightmares."
"Oh," Jolie frowned. "Well... don't worry too much. Everyone gets nightmares... just remember, the only real part about them is the feelings. That's what my mom always says."
Nell blinked. She placed her head on her pillow.
"My nightmare was real," she uttered. "I was... at... I was at the place I used to live before here."
Her voice dried up. Jolie offered a hand. Nell offered hers; Jolie gave it a gentle squeeze.
"You're not there anymore," she told Nell. "You're safe here. Don't worry, Nell. I don't know what happened to you in the past, but it won't hurt you again."
Nell and Jolie stared at each other for a long time.
"Just let your thoughts drift by," Jolie continued. "I'm here. You're safe now."
Nell was finally able to smile again. She didn't mind being awake, since she finally felt safe.
Curtis entered Nell's room, carrying replacement food and drink. He smiled at the sight of Jolie leaned over, arms rested on Nell's bed. Both princesses were lying there, peacefully.
The butler chuckled. He supposed he could let them stay there a little longer.
Chapter Text
Jolie had always found herself drawn to the mysterious, the darkness, the quiet ones. Perhaps it was because she herself was one of those; her lack of eyes tended to turn away people... at first.
Maybe it was simply human desire and curiosity. Or, maybe, just maybe, it was pity. She felt sorry for those left in the dark. Didn't they deserve love too?
Whatever the case, she loved being the one to help. To pull them out from the dark, to save them from their misery. Just like how her parents had saved their kingdom.
She had taken a note out of their book, always keeping an eye out for the quiet ones. Whether it was the child who had no friends, or the ones who never asked for any food. The quiet ones tended to have the loudest thoughts.
So when she first arrived at the CPC, the intrigue had lured her to Princess Nell. Of course, she knew not everyone needed her help, and that was okay. She was always there if someone asked.
Nell had been hesitant at first, but Jolie could tell... the two were warming up to each other. Of course, Jolie enjoyed spending time with the other club members. Saffron and Syrah had interesting banter, and Abbi was always cooking up some kind of interesting plan. Thermidora's stories of the sea never grew old. Plus, Prez had pockets of wisdom to give.
But Nell was different. Behind the hissing and the bloodshot eyes... was a kind, empathetic soul. Jolie had to admit, she wasn't sure what Nell had been through before she'd come to the club.
"Nell probably wouldn't want me to tell you," Prez admitted, her eyes cold, "but I will say... she had a pretty bad home life before she came here."
That was all Jolie needed to know. But even if she didn't know a thing, Nell deserved the tenderness.
"Everyone has been through hardships," The Lace Queen explained to her daughter. "Things that could make you curl into a ball and sob."
"So, remember..." The Lace King added. "Always be gentle with people."
And she took those lessons to heart, extending a kind and gentle hand to every soul she ran across.
At this very moment, her hand was extended towards Nell, her closest companion in the club. Nell truly was different. Her voice softening to a gentle low, her cheeks burning. The conversations she held, the care she shared. Even if she did not show in it any traditional sense, Jolie knew the club meant everything to her.
Nell kept to the bushes, watching everything because she cared. She cared about the club and she loved it with her whole being.
Jolie had many friends, of course. She knew practically everyone in her kingdom. She was on good terms with the members of the CPC (for the most part). She was used to big social gatherings.
But that did not mean she always enjoyed them. Some of her most treasured moments were with Nell, simply sharing a private picnic.
Nell was going through another prophecy, judging by the bags under her eyes. Jolie wanted to make her another blanket. She wondered when Nell's birthday was; she'd totally douse her friend in presents.
"Here you go," she offered Nell some handmade handkerchiefs.
"Thank you," Nell took them. "Since you've been giving me so many gits... I wanted to give you something as well."
She reached into her skirt, pulling out a small bag. Jolie opened it up; it was a white charm bracelet.
"Oh, this is so beautiful," Jolie gasped, putting it on.
"Thank you," Nell told her. "You... you make this place so special."
Jolie reached out a hand. "Nell... when's your birthday?"
Nell shrugged. "I don't know."
"Hmm..." Jolie made a face. "When do you want it to be?"
Nell waved it off. "I don't know. I don't care. Nothing ever happens on my birthday anyway."
"I see," Jolie made a face. "How about today?"
Nell blushed. "Um... sure."
"Then today it is," Jolie nodded. "Happy Birthday, Nell!"
Nell's face went a darker shade of red. "Thanks..."
Jolie thought back to Nell's past. She realised the girl would've never had a real birthday celebration before, which broke her heart.
Jolie grinned. "Of course. Do you want me to tell the rest of the club?"
Nell shook her head.
Jolie nodded in understanding. She looked away, a teasing smile on her face.
"What is it?" Nell croaked.
"Nell... can you do me a favour?" Jolie asked.
"Uhhh... sure?" Nell asked, cautiously.
"Meet me here later tonight," Jolie told her. "I have something to show you."
...
The evening came; Nell was shivering with anticipation. What exactly was Jolie planning to show her?
Stars filled the pitch-black sky. The moon was high above, covering the CPC's mansion in a gentle glow. Nell eyed the bushes; her favourite spot in the whole club.
She crept into the bushes, looking around. There was no one there.
Then... she smelled something wonderful. Fresh-baked goods, or something of the sort.
She followed the scent, reaching a little table. A lace tablecloth was on top, as well as a selection of small cakes. Hanging from the trees was a banner that read HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NELL!
Jolie was sitting at the table, Curtis behind her. She waved at Nell. She was dressed in a beautiful lace dress, almost as if she was getting married.
"Happy Birthday!" she told her.
"This... is for me?" Nell looked around.
Jolie offered her a present. "Of course! I set this up by myself... for the most part."
She gave Curtis a nod, who bowed in return. Well, Nell didn't mind Curtis knowing. The butler was sworn to secrecy.
Nell opened up the present in her hands. It was a framed picture of herself and Jolie. There were lace and stripe patterns on the frame.
"To best friends," Jolie held up her drink.
Nell felt her heart racing a million miles an hour. She slumped at the table, lip quivering.
"I..." she trailed off, her voice choking.
Jolie nodded at Curtis. He turned on a record player, which played some soft tunes.
"Come on!" Jolie headed to a clear patch, through the trees. The moonlight shone down on her. She was ethereal, almost like a goddess.
Nell looked away. The girl in front of her was the most beautiful person she'd ever laid eyes on. Her best friend, her closest companion. The kindest, gentlest person she knew. She didn't deserve her.
Curtis gave her a nod of affirmation, leaving the two alone.
Nell swallowed. She stepped forward, joining Jolie in the moonlight.
"Let's dance, Nell," Jolie took Nell's arms in hers.
The two swung around. Nell gazed into Jolie's sockets. She swore she could see a bunch of knick-knacks rattling around in there. Somehow, that made her love Jolie even more. She was so full of surprises.
"Uhh," Nell swayed backwards, almost falling.
"Hold on," Jolie took her arm. "You're doing great, Nell. Just watch me."
She moved her feet back and forth. Nell copied, almost tripping over once more.
"I'm not graceful," Nell admitted.
"You don't have to be," Jolie assured her. "You're already perfect enough."
Nell watched her do a little twirl. She gasped, wobbling.
"I'm not a dancing pro either," she admitted. "But it is a lot of fun."
"Yeah..." Nell blushed again.
Jolie took Nell's hands once more. They span around in circles, swaying to the music.
"Enjoying your birthday?" Jolie asked.
Nell nodded. "Best one I've ever had."
Jolie beamed. "I'm so glad to hear that."
Nell almost tripped again, if not for Jolie's careful hands.
"Jolie," Nell stared at her friend.
"Yes?" Jolie blinked.
"You're beautiful," Nell blurted. She gasped, covering her mouth.
Jolie giggled. "You're quite beautiful yourself."
Nell hid her face, stepping backwards. "You... you think so?"
Jolie nodded. She offered a hand.
"Would you do me the honour of having this dance, my fair lady?" she teased, gently.
Nell nodded, walt-dancing with Jolie until the night was old.

Chapter 10: Chapter 9 - Love
Chapter Text
Nell couldn’t deny it anymore. Jolie was different. The way she made her heart flutter, her cheeks burn red… what were these feelings?
She thought of all the times Jolie had given her presents, alongside a gentle smile. The way she’d taken her hands in her own, swinging Nell in the moonlight. The way she’d waited by Nell when she was having a prophecy, lying alongside her. She was always there for her, no matter the case.
Nell clenched her fists. How was she supposed to deal with these… feelings?
Her head began to pound. She rolled over in her bed, eyes burning scarlet.
SOMEONE MUST MAKE AN EMBARRASSING PURCHASE.
She hissed as she rolled onto the floor.
“Nell, are you feeling okay?”
Nell looked up. Prez was standing above her, brow creased in concern.
“Yeah,” Nell jumped back on her bed. “Why are you in here?”
“Sorry,” Prez raised her hands. “I was just coming to visit, and I saw you were on the floor.”
“‘M fine,” Nell muttered, crawling back onto the bed.
“If you say so,” Prez sighed. “I also came to let you know, Jolie won’t be here for a little while.”
Nell tensed up. “Why?”
“Something came up back home,” Prez told her. “She told me to say she’s sorry, but she’s not sure when she’ll be back.”
Nell collapsed onto her bed, shaking.
“I know you two are very close,” Prez frowned. “But don’t worry, I’m sure she’ll be back soon.” She turned away. “Do you want anything else?”
“No,” Nell grumbled. “Thanks, Calpernia.”
She sighed, gloomily. She thought of Jolie’s haunting smile.
Nell watched Jolie as she beamed wide, chatting to the other members of the CPC. Nell grimaced, feeling the burning rage in her heart once more.
Jolie came over, sitting beside Nell.
“How do you talk to them so easily?” Nell asked her.
Jolie shrugged. “They’re pretty easy to talk to. They’ve all been through a lot.”
Nell hugged herself. “It’s not easy for me.”
“That’s okay,” Jolie assured her. “Everyone is different.”
Of course it was okay. Nell had to wonder why Jolie was so gentle, so caring. What were her true intentions? Was she just like that? Did she truly care?
“You’re welcome,” Prez waved, leaving Nell alone once more.
Nell flopped backwards. She felt her heart racing. She was used to being alone, but still… there was a hole in her heart. Jolie wasn’t there.
“You’re beautiful too.”
Nell stared at Jolie, her eyes widening.
“W… what?” she stammered.
“You’re beautiful too,” Jolie repeated.
“I…” Nell shook her head. “How do I know you really mean that…?”
“You’re beautiful because you care,” Jolie replied. “You care, so, so much.”
Nell wished she could go and visit Jolie in her kingdom. But it was too dangerous. She would not put herself at risk of being discovered by the Stripe Kingdom.
“I know your family was awful to you,” Jolie bowed her head. “I hope no one ever treats you like that again.”
“Maybe,” Nell muttered. “I don’t think I fit in here.”
“You don’t have to, as long as you like being here,” Jolie assured her.
The feelings… Nell wanted to repay all the compassion Jolie had shown. But how?
Nell had never smiled so much, not since she’d met Jolie.
The two stared out at the forest.
“I’ll take you to the Lace Kingdom one day,” Jolie promised her. “My parents would love you!”
That word again. Love.
“They would?” Nell asked, tentatively.
“Of course,” Jolie replied. “I’d take you everywhere.”
You can’t, Nell wanted to scream. You can’t!! They’ll find me, and… who knows what they’ll do to you.
She’d never forgive herself if something happened to Jolie.
Jolie had given her so much. Nell looked at her hands, her head thumping.
The feelings… she knew it now. She loved Jolie. She loved her more than anything else.
In the end, she’d gotten a Prince Charming of her own - in the form of a strange, eyeless cursed princess. But she wouldn’t have it any other way. Jolie was perfect.
Life was so strange, giving its trials and tribulations, even in the places you least expected. The same applied to life’s gifts as well. It was as confusing as it was messy.
But one thing was clear. Nell loved Jolie.
Nell sighed. Of course, the time she had the realization was the one time Jolie wasn’t there.
Nell stood up. She needed to prepare for Jolie’s return… but how did one confess their feelings?
EMBARRASSING PURCHASE.
The Stripe Princess swallowed. Of course. Lovers always bought silly things for each other. After all, Jolie had already given her so many presents.
It was time to return the favour.
“Nell!”
Jolie raced over to the bushes, bag over her shoulder.
“I’m so sorry I’ve been away for so long,” Jolie dipped her head. “I…”
She realised Nell wasn’t there.
“Nell…?” she asked, tentatively.
She heard some rustling from some different bushes. She tilted her head, approaching the bushes.
Nell hissed, jumping backwards. She spilled a bunch of paper hearts everywhere.
“Oh!” Jolie gasped. “Sorry, Nell, I didn’t mean to…”
She trailed off, gazing at the hearts.
“What are these for?” Jolie asked.
Nell was holding out a gift, her body hunched over.
Jolie gasped. “Thank you!”
She opened up the gift; it was a box of chocolates.
“Wow, this is wonderful” Jolie gazed over it. “And, um… very romantic.”
Nell held out a rose, her face burning bright red.
Jolie chuckled, gently accepting the rose. It was the same colour as Nell’s eyes.
“Um…” Nell croaked. “Jolie, did you… um… did you want to…?”
“Be your girlfriend?” Jolie gasped.
“Yes,” Nell squeaked.
Jolie looked down, expression dark. Nell felt a cold shiver.
Don’t tell me she…
Suddenly, Jolie was laughing. She clapped.
“It’s funny,” she said. “Because… I was planning to ask you today as well!”
She held out a card and a wrapped present of her own. Nell’s heart fluttered once more.
“Will you…?” Nell questioned, accepting the present.
Jolie nodded. “And will you?”
Nell returned the nod. The two held hands, staring into each other’s eyes.
“I love you,” Nell told her.
“I love you too,” Jolie replied, as they drew closer together.
Nell sighed, as they shared a brief kiss. She never wanted this moment to end.

Chapter Text
Dating Jolie was the best feeling in the world. Nell couldn't believe she'd been so lucky. She wanted to keep their relationship secret, however. It was her business with Jolie. Not that she didn't trust the other club members, but she didn't want to make it a huge deal with them. Especially Syrah, who could never get enough relationship gossip.
Jolie was understanding as always, which was what Nell loved about her most.
The two had secret dates, alongside Nell's sleeping... and snooping. Usually at night, if there wasn't a slumber party. Sometimes they would sneak into the bushes, having tea parties and dancing under the stars.
Technically Curtis knew about the relationship, but he kept it under tight lips. Nell supposed she could trust him, if only because butlers lived and died by their code of honour.
While running around at night was fun, sitting around was fun too. Sometimes, Jolie laid in bed next to Nell, and they would simply talk. Or sit in comfortable silence.
"I'm glad I came to this club," Nell told Jolie.
"Me too," Jolie sighed. "I wasn't going to stay at first... but then I met you."
Nell's cheeks burned red.
"You're amazing," Nell told her. "You... you know so much."
"I know a lot," Jolie agreed, "but not everything. I've learnt stuff from you too."
"Like what?" Nell asked.
"How to be a great girlfriend," Jolie replied.
She reached into her eye socket, pulling out a heart-shaped lollipop. She handed it to Nell.
"Thanks," Nell took it, shaking off a bug. She licked it, slumping back into her pillow. "I... I wish we could go on a date somewhere, but..."
"It's okay," Jolie assured her. "I'm just glad to be here with you!"
Nell held her hand. "I'm still not sure about the others..."
"They're not that bad," Jolie chuckled. "They can be a bit much sometimes, but they mean well."
The two blushed at each other. Nell sighed; she felt a guilt weighing her down.
I don't deserve her.
"I'm... I'm scared," she admitted.
"Why?" Jolie asked, reaching over.
"Of the outside world," Nell told her. "My Kingdom... they're looking out for me."
Jolie squeezed her hand. "Don't worry. As long as you stay here, they won't find you."
Nell remembered what Calpernia had promised her:
"I promise," Calpernia put a hand on her heart. "While you're with me, I won't let any harm come to you."
Of course she believed her. But the fear was still there.
"Don't worry, Nell," Jolie assured her. "Everything will be okay."
And the two closed their eyes, falling asleep.
Until they were woken up by the roars of a spider.
The two chuckled at each other.
"No one will come near the club if they hear that," Jolie giggled.
Nell really couldn't disagree. She had briefly seen Prez's spider form once, and that once was more than enough. She closed her eyes, hand still on Jolie's.
She'd never be normal, but that didn't matter. She was happy, after all.
Nell awoke in the middle of the night. She hissed, rolling over, eyes burning red. Her head was pounding.
"Nell!" Jolie gasped, reaching over.
"THE WITCH IS ARRIVING," Nell thundered, rolling towards the edge of the bed.
"The witch?" Jolie asked, holding onto her girlfriend.
Nell shrugged, shaking her head. "I'm not sure... my prophecies aren't always literal."
"Well, if any witch shows up, Prez's spiders will spot it," Jolie told her.
Nell grimaced. "I suppose."
But the feeling didn't go away.
Jolie sat up, peeking out the window. Stars twinkled above.
"It's a weird place here," she told Nell, "but you can trust this club. We all want to help you, Nell."
Nell found it easier to agree than ever before. The club was here.
Jolie sat in the bed once again, holding her hand. For a moment, the two said nothing.
"After I first got cursed, I had a lot of trouble sleeping," Jolie admitted. "I was so worried another demon would show up."
Nell hid her face. "My curse won't let me sleep."
"I know," Jolie told her. "... but I'm used to being awake too."
Jolie gazed at Nell, her fake eyes glazed over. She adjusted her eye mask.
"My parents would often have to stay with me all night," she told Nell. "Eventually, I stopped being so scared... but sometimes, I still wake up in a cold sweat. I hate being alone. That's why I'm glad you're here."
Nell smiled, sincerely. "Me too. I'm used to being alone, but... company sure is nice."
Jolie was gone in the morning, sharing breakfast with the other members. Nell groaned. Curtis had left food for her in the fridge, as per usual. She rubbed her throbbing temples. This was going to be a long day. She didn't need a prophecy to tell her that.
Nell covered her ears with her pillow. The other members were having another one of their slumber parties. They were screaming and carrying on, and it was way past midnight!
What on earth were they being so loud about?! Nell wanted to screech. She could barely sleep with all this noise.
She hated their parties, their noise. It was too much, too much, too much.
She stormed out of her room, heading right over to that slumber party. The chattering grew louder and louder. The lights were flashing.
"HEY!" she threw the curtains open. "WHY ARE YOU ALL SCREAMING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT?!"
Then she saw it. Jolie was sitting beside a girl wearing a nightgown - one of Jolie's own night gowns. Her skin was a snot green, her hair long and messy like seaweed. Her eyes were sharp and narrow. She looked like a witch.
Nell felt her throat tighten. Jolie had her arm around the girl. The girl wearing a lace nightgown. Who did that girl think she was?!
"Oh!" Jolie grinned. "Hi, Nell. This is Gwen, she's the newest member of-"
"DO I LOOK LIKE I CARE?!" Nell snapped. "Just keep it down, it's late!"
Jolie kept grinning. "Okay, we will! Goodnight!"
Nell glared right at the new girl - Gwen. She wanted to scream at her, hiss at her, claw at her, but in the end, she felt herself walking away.
The prophecy had been fulfilled. The witch was here... and she was stealing Nell's girlfriend.

Chapter 12: Chapter 11 - Changes
Chapter Text
The club changed once Gwendolyn arrived.
She wasn't like the other princesses - not only because she didn't look like a traditional princess, but also because she was not cursed.
Not that Nell cared about that. The only thing that bothered her about Gwen was the fact that she was stealing Jolie away from her.
Perhaps it was purely jealousy, but it didn't come from completely nowhere. Nell knew that Gwen and her fiancé had some issues.
Of course, Nell did not have the confidence or poise to approach Gwen, so she could only glare from afar.
Gwen, constantly clinging onto her girlfriend...
Nell considered telling Jolie herself, but she didn't want to make it a huge issue. What if Jolie got upset and left?
Nell would never forgive herself. So she kept quiet, continuing to glare at Gwen.
Well... she couldn't completely hate Gwen. Aside from sitting near Jolie, she didn't seem like a pain in the behind. She was sweet, always baking treats and making presents.
No. Nell didn't trust her. She kept to herself, trying not to think of the prophecy brewing in her mind.
Jolie had to admit, she felt sorry for poor Gwendolyn. Just like Nell, she was a cast-out soul. She needed a friend... especially after what her fiancé had done.
(Jolie had to admit, she was glad she was only attracted to girls. She tended to be wary of men, princes especially...)
Of course, Jolie still kept up with Nell, who seemed a little more grouchy than usual. Or was she just imagining things? Nell was usually grouchy, after all.
Well, the club always got a bit more lively when a new member joined. Especially one as unique as Gwendolyn. Plus, she was an amazing baker as well.
Jolie showed Gwen her sewing, just as she'd shown Nell. Gwen, who was a crafty one indeed, showed quite the skill for sewing. They sat down together, working on their projects.
"You're good!" Jolie complimented her, admiring her craftsmanship.
"Oh, uh, thank you," Gwen smiled, looking down.
Her shoulders were slumped.
"Don't worry too much about your fiancé or anything like that," Jolie assured her. "We're all here to support you!"
Luckily, she was wearing her eyemask, so her smile wouldn't be too unnerving.
Gwen returned the grin. "Thanks, Jolie."
Yes. While Gwen was here, Jolie would make sure she got all the friendship she deserved.
That fiance of hers had better hope he never runs into us... she thought. Because if he does... there'll be Hell to pay.
THE CLOUDS ARE CONVERGING.
Nell gasped, sitting up. Thunder was rumbling above.
She had an eerie feeling, brewing inside her like the storm above. The prophecy had woken her once more. Something very bad was about to happen.
She crept out of bed, sneaking down the hall. It was very early, or very late, judging by the dark sky. She raced into the bushes, peering left and right. The air was thin.
Then she saw her. Gwen was walking towards the barn, a lantern in hand.
Is that... Gwendolyn? Nell thought. Why is she going towards the barn?! Doesn't she know she's not allowed?!
She felt fear race through her. Calpernia's spider form was hidden inside. Nell knew what would happen if Gwen got too close.
Nell grimaced. She wanted to go and warn Gwen herself, but the idea of that big spider...
I need to get Curtis, she thought.
Jolie was surprised. She and Nell were so close, but she still struggled to read her emotions from time to time.
She hadn't expected her to get so jealous, though. She sat beside Nell, away from the others who were drinking themselves silly, after the events of the evening. They hid in their favourite bushes.
"Everyone knows now," Nell sighed.
Jolie frowned. She reached out.
"I'm so sorry," she apologised. "Nell, I didn't realise you were jealous."
Nell looked away. "It's okay. You get on well with the others. I was overreacting."
"You could've told me," Jolie muttered.
Nell blinked. It wasn't like Jolie to use that tone.
"I was scared you'd get mad and leave," Nell admitted.
"I would never!" Jolie assured her. "I love you, Nell. I love you so much."
Nell felt her heart racing once more. She and her girlfriend clasped hands.
And the thought of marriage crossed both their minds. Neither of them dared to speak it, though. They simply wanted to enjoy the silence.
"Syrah might be getting up in our space," Jolie warned. "She loves relationship gossip."
Nell sighed. "Let her try."
Jolie simply chuckled. Nell gazed at the others, who were surrounded by alcohol bottles.
"Calpernia is so strong," Nell muttered, "putting up with that curse."
"So are you," Jolie told her. "Your curse isn't an easy one to live with."
Nell grimaced, placing her head on her knees.
"I'm surprised they thought you wrote those cruel letters to Gwen," Jolie admitted.
Nell blinked. She shrugged.
"I was glaring at her a lot," she sighed.
Jolie chuckled. "Well, she told me her relationship with her fiancé is improving."
"Good news for all of us," Nell nodded, smiling for the first time in a while.
Later that night, Nell saw a tired Gwen. Gwen gave her a smile, but Nell simply returned to the bushes.
The club continued to change; Aurelia was gone, banished forever. The storms grew in intensity. Nell could feel the thunder rumbling above, the glaze of the lightning burning into her mind.
The bad wasn't over yet. It was still coming.
SOMETIME BEFORE THE NEW MOON WILL PASS, A MEMBER OF THIS CLUB SHALL DIE IN A FLASH.
Of course, Nell knew Prez's backstory well. She'd heard it many times before. She knew of Prez's dead fiancé, Whitney.
Turns out he wasn't dead after all, as he'd shown up at the club. That dangerous man... he was going to hurt Prez.
No. Nell couldn't let Prez get hurt. She was the one who had saved Nell in the first place. If she hadn't rescued her, she'd still be in the Stripe Palace, serving as their slave.
So just as Prez had once protected Nell from her own family, Nell put herself in front of Prez, protecting her from her ex-fiancé.
Prez grinned at her, her voice quiet. "Thank you, Nell."
Nell just nodded in return. It was the least she could do.
It turned out Whitney was no longer the bad guy he used to be. Better yet, he saved Renée from death. Somehow, Gwen's fiancé had found out about the club, which meant he was practically a member as well.
Nell sighed, leaning her head on Jolie's shoulder. It was midnight, in Jolie's lace-filled room, for a change.
"Did you sign Aurelia's card?" Jolie asked.
"Yep," Nell nodded.
Jolie chuckled. "Looks like things are looking up again."
Nell smiled. As much as she only received prophecies of misfortune, she had only good feelings about the future.
Chapter 13: Chapter 12 - The Gala
Chapter Text
The Gala was approaching, and Nell was not interested. Why would she want to go to some big stupid party in some ridiculous costume, where her family could sniff her out?
No thanks. Not a chance.
Of course, that didn't mean she would stop Jolie from going. Her girlfriend loved parties, after all.
But the thought of marriage crossed her mind once again. She wanted to take Jolie's hand... if only she knew the right time to propose. It seemed Jolie was always caught up in club activities these days...
Luckily, Curtis was willing to help her purchase a ring. It was a beautiful thing; a small diamond on a golden ring. It was worth every coin.
Nell gazed over the ring, hiding under her blankets. She breathed in, a grin on her face. Any day now, she was going to ask the question. And then she and Jolie would be united at last.
It was going to be wonderful.
She peered out the window. Everyone was preparing their costumes for the gala. Including Jolie.
Nell sighed, slumping onto her bed. Her girlfriend's costume was hauntingly beautiful, just as much as the girl herself. She loved her so much.
Costumes...
Nell hugged herself. As much as she hated the gala, such a grandiose location would be the ideal place to propose. If she could get herself a costume that hid her entire form, then just maybe...
She stood up, looking around her room. She eyed the blankets piled in her corner. An idea bloomed in her mind.
Jolie was over the moon. She held Nell's hands; they just barley peeked out of the blankets wrapped around her. Nell was wearing the beautiful ring; ironically, the ring that she had bought for Jolie.
The gala was crowded, with lights, food and ridiculous costumes. Nell hissed when anyone she didn't know got too close. She preferred to stay hidden by a tree.
Right now, the lovers were beside Jolie's parents. A pretty song began playing above.
Jolie's mother smiled at the two. "Why don't you two have a dance? This is a lovely song, after all."
Nell felt her cheeks burning. This was not what she'd expected from her girlfriend's parents.
Jolie giggled.
"Well, only if you want to, Nell," she told her now-fiancée.
Jolie's parents were grinning at the both of them. Her father coughed.
"How about we give you two some privacy?" he suggested, grabbing his wife's arm.
"Thanks, guys," Jolie waved at her parents.
Nell rubbed her arms. Jolie's parents had given her quite the hug.
"Sorry if they came on a bit strong," Jolie chuckled. "They get excited pretty easily."
"It's okay," Nell replied. She looked away. "They... already see me as family. I hardly know them."
"That's alright, you don't need to," Jolie assured her. "Mom and Dad know I'm with someone I love very much."
Nell felt her entire face go red. Was this what it was like? To have a loving family? Parents who loved you no matter what?
"So... about that dance?" Jolie offered a hand.
Nell accepted her fiancée's hand. They crept down the stairs of the Polygon Palace, reaching the dance floor. They stayed in the corner, swaying to the music. Lights flashed and glasses clinked together. Crowds of people were everywhere; Nell slipped behind Jolie.
Clowns danced together. Jolie took her lover's hands.
"Such a beautiful night," she commented, twirling her fiancée.
Nell's thoughts turned to the club... and in turn, the crystal that was to be given out at the raffle.
"Jolie..." Nell croaked. "You know, that supposedly curse-curing crustal... would you take it?"
"Of course," Jolie replied. "I'd give it straight to you."
Nell blinked. For a moment, she indulged herself in the life of a princess who wasn't cursed. No more endless nights without sleep, no more awful prophecies. No reason for the Stripe Kingdom to hunt her down.
It was too good to be true.
"But it's probably fake, honestly," Jolie admitted. "That's alright. As long as we're together... everything will be okay."
Nell was covered in the light from above. Her girlfriend swirled her around.
"Would you use it on yourself?" Nell asked, quietly.
"No," Jolie answered, surprisingly fast. "My curse doesn't really bother me. Honestly... I wouldn't have it any other way. Plus, there are others who really do hate their curses."
They were face to face. This was everything Nell wanted and more. How could anything ruin this perfect evening?
They danced and danced, ignoring everything else. It was just the two of them, gazing into each other's eyes and eyesockets with all the love in the world.
Life had its hard parts, but right now, Nell finally felt she was experiencing the best of it. It was all thanks to the wonderful, beautiful princess she was dancing with, the princess who had taken her heart and given it back and so much more.
"I love you," Nell whispered.
And she kissed Jolie, holding her hands once more.
"Your highness!!"
Prince Eifen of the Stripe Kingdom looked up. One of his goons was standing next to him, bouncing on his toes.
As was customary, Eifen was at the gala, dressed as a zebra. Not that he liked leaving his kingdom, but this was a necessary evil. Plus, there was always a chance that he'd run into a certain someone.
"What is it?" the Stripe Prince snapped at his goon.
"We saw that woman!" the goon told him. "The one that kidnapped Princess Nell!"
Eifen slowly sipped his drink.
"This isn't another false alarm, is it?" he asked.
"Of course not!" the goon assured him. "I swear! It's really her!"
Eifen, despite being much shorter than his goon, was still able to intimidate the large man into shivering.
"This had better be real, for your sake," he uttered. "Where did you see her?"
The goon pointed over the balcony. Eifen sipped his drink once again. He eyed a woman dressed in a spider costume. His eyes narrowed.
"Your highness?" the goon whimpered.
"Ah," Eifen smiled. "Yes. That's her."
Nell sighed, leaving the bathroom. Getting in and out of her costume was quite a challenge.
The song was pounding in her ears. Nell grimaced; it had been fun, but she'd had enough of the gala.
She waved to Jolie, running over to her. But she didn't make it. She collapsed. Her head exploded into firey pain. She could only utter one phrase:
HE IS COMING HE IS COMING HE IS COMING

HE IS COMING
Nell sat straight up. She burst out of her room. Curtis was walking by; concern appeared on his brow.
"Miss Nell?" he asked.
Nell collapsed. "I need to see Prez. Now."
Jolie was having a rather nice time talking to Gwen - and Frederick, who had essentially become a club member as well. They were inside the mansion, having a massive indoor picnic.
"And that's where my hair clip went," Jolie said, pulling a hair clip out of her sockets.
Frederick hid behind Gwen, his face pale. "Uh..."
"You'll get used to it," she whispered to him.
"How are you guys going?" Prez asked, walking over.
"Pretty good," Gwen eyed Frederick, who looked like he was about to pass out.
"Prez," Nell burst in, collapsing against the wall. Curtis was just behind her.
"Nell?" Prez raced over to her, Jolie behind her. "What's wrong?"
"You all need to leave," Nell told her. "Now."
"Leave?" Prez raised a brow.
"Something very bad is coming," Nell uttered.
Prez furrowed her brow. A spider appeared on her shoulder, whispering something into her ear.
Prez gritted her teeth. She uttered a curse.
"What's happening?" Frederick asked.
"Everyone!" Prez raised her voice. "Listen up!"
Everyone stared at her.
"What's up, Prez?" Syrah asked.
"Alright, I don't want any of you to panic," Prez said, waving her hands.
"Oh no!" Monika shrieked, turning into a bird.
"It's probably not that serious," Saffron waved a hand. "I bet someone just left the stove on or something."
"A group of dangerous individuals are approaching the club as we speak," Prez explained.
Everyone just stared at her. A few seconds later, everyone began panicking.
"Everyone, calm down!" Prez spoke up.
"WHAT, WE'RE GETTING INVADED!!" Saffron cried out.
Monika was flying around. Thermidora was sobbing, and Abbi was crying and holding onto Syrah. Frederick and Gwen held hands.
"Nell..." Jolie turned around, but Nell was gone.
"ENOUGH!" Prez thundered.
Everyone stopped and stared at her.
"We can handle this," Prez told them. "They're only interested in me... and one other member. If they think we're not here, they won't approach."
"So... we just go and hide?" Syrah asked.
Prez nodded. "Stay out of sight, and we'll be okay."
"Um..." Gwen spoke up. "If you don't mind me asking, who are they here for?"
Prez gritted her teeth. "Me... and Nell."
Princess Calpernia, in the back of her mind, had always feared this day would come. Considering all the changes the club had been through, doomsday seemed like it was just on the horizon.
She sighed, putting her head in her palm. No. She would protect her club, no matter what.
I promised Nell I'd keep her safe. I won't break that promise.
She took a deep breath. Her butler, Curtis, stood beside her.
"We got this, Curtis," she said.
She was reassuring herself as much as him.
Curtis nodded. The butler got to work on making sure the club members were safe.
Prez breathed out, forcing herself to calm down. Her spiders were scared out of their tiny minds, the poor things. They stayed near their master.
"Stay low," she reminded everyone, before waiting beside the door.
"Princess Calpernia of the Polygon Kingdom."
The voice was callous and cruel, sickly sweet. Amongst the group of hardened thugs was none other than a prince. Although not particularly tall, a harsh glimmer was in his gray eyes. He wore a stripe sash and dark pants, his messy, choppy hair over his forehead. He somewhat resembled Nell, although his features were far harsher. Crueler. Realistically he had to be in his mid twenties, but the cold smile and eye bags made him look so much older.
"I know you're here," he spoke, calmly, dangerously. "Don't waste my time with games."
Prez did not move.
"I want to make you an offer, Princess Calpernia," the Stripe Prince continued. "Surrender yourself and Princess Nell, and no harm will come to the rest of your club here."
Prez went cold. How did he find out about the club?!
"Oh yes, I know about your little club," the prince continued. "Your little club of cursed princesses. Quite frankly, I have no interest in the rest of you, so if you do what I say, Princess Calpernia, no harm shall come to them." He smiled. "You don't want to be responsible for their deaths, do you?"
Prez's arms were shaking. She could feel Curtis behind her.
"Your highness..." he whispered.
Prez stood up, leaving the building. She approached the Stripe Prince.
"Prince Eifen, wasn't it?" she asked.
"Indeed," the prince nodded. "Do we have an agreement, Princess Calpernia?"
Everyone held their breath.
"Your highness," Prez offered Eifen her hand. "I have to admit, your deal sounds reasonable."
The other members gasped. The two clasped hands.
"... is what I would say, if you weren't human garbage!!" Prez roared.
She grabbed his arm, bringing him down. The cronies held up their fists.
Eifen clicked his tongue, gazing up at her. "Oh, Princess, this could've been so easy."
"Easy?!" Saffron burst out of the house, holding up his fists. "Think again, idiots!"
Whitney emerged as well, making some of the goons sweat. Curtis stood up, narrowing his eyes.
Eifen waved a hand. "Find my sister... and deal with the rest."
It was a complete panic inside the mansion. Princesses were either running around and screaming, or hiding.
"Away with you!!" Thermidora shouted, grabbing a goon with her claw.
Saffron yelled a slur, engaging in a punching match with another goon. Whitney knocked a few of them over with a large swipe. Monika flew out of the building, away from someone chasing her.
"You should've just surrendered," Eifen told Prez, clashing against her.
"I made a promise to Nell," Prez retorted, "that I wouldn't let anyone hurt her."
Eifen just laughed at that, swinging his knife. "How trite. I don't think you understand Nell's purpose."
"She's not an object!" Prez snapped back. "She's a person!"
She cried out, as Eifen shoved her down.
Meanwhile, Gwen and Frederick were hiding in the kitchen. Frederick was standing up, his hand on Gwen's arm.
"Gwen, c'mon, we need to leave now!" He told her.
Gwen shook her head. "No! I have to help Nell."
"It's too dangerous!" Frederick retorted. "Those guys could really hurt us."
"Nell saved my life," Gwen replied. "I can't just abandon her, Frederick!"
"She... saved your life?" Frederick raised his brow.
Gwen nodded. "I'm sorry, but I can't leave her."
Frederick groaned, clenching his fists.
"Okay, okay, fine," he said. "Where is Nell? Where's her room?"
"Um..." Gwen looked up. "I think down that way...?"
Frederick raced off.
"Frederick, wait!" Gwen headed after him.
Nell was trembling under her blankets. Jolie sat beside her, rubbing her shoulder.
"It'll be okay," she assured Nell.
Nell just kept shaking. This couldn't be real. This was an awful, horrible nightmare.
Suddenly, the door was thrown open. A frazzled Frederick stormed in, eyes narrowed.
"Is this Nell?" he asked, walking over to the bed. "We need to leave, right now!"
"Hold on," Jolie waved her hands. "She's not ready yet."
"Those guys outside could kill us at any second!" Frederick retorted.
He reached over. Nell hissed at him.
"Augh!" He jumped back.
"Frederick!" Gwen came in.
She raced next to her boyfriend, grabbing his hand. Nell groaned from under her blankets.
"Sorry," Gwen apologised. "It's just..."
"It's okay," Jolie sighed. She continued to rub Nell's shoulder.
Frederick got back up. "Look. We... we can sneak out of here while the others fight those guys. Then we'll take Nell somewhere they can't get her."
"The Lace Kingdom," Jolie breathed.
Nell felt her heart racing. Jolie wanted to take her to her home kingdom?
"That's a long way to go," Frederick replied, "but if we can find a carriage..."
Nell sat up, making Frederick jump.
"I'm ready," she croaked.
She reached out to her fiancée; Jolie helped her stand up.
"Are you okay?" Gwen asked Nell, quietly.
Nell grimaced. Frederick peeked his head out of the room.
"No one here..." he muttered.
Gwen joined him, looking around.
"This is the closest way to the exit!" she gasped.
The four headed out of the room, Jolie supporting Nell. The group made their way towards the exit. The light was shining, almost like an invite.
"Nearly there!" Gwen gasped.
They finally got out. But someone was waiting.
"Finally," Eifen smirked. "Nell, it's been so long!"
Chapter 15: Chapter 14 - The Heart has been Healed, part 2
Notes:
Warning, this chapter gets a bit violent!
Chapter Text
This was Nell's worst nightmare. The worst thing she could've possibly predicted. She wanted to believe it was just a bad dream.
But it was real. Her older brother was standing in the midst of the CPC, the one place she thought she'd never see him.
Her breathing became heavy. She clung onto Jolie, who squeezed her hand.
"Trying to run, are you?" Eifen asked. "Shouldn't you know already, Nell? I have eyes and ears everywhere."
Frederick had gone pale. Gwen held his arm.
"You won't take her," Jolie stepped forward.
"Oh?" Eifen eyed her. "You think you can decide that?"
One of his goons appeared, looming over everyone. Frederick was sweating bullets.
"Pathetic," Eifen shook his head.
Frederick passed out onto the grass.
"Frederick!!" Gwen gasped, reaching down.
"So much for your heroic prince," Eifen sighed.
Nell took off, Jolie still clinging onto her. The goon stood in front of the princesses.
Gwen gasped. She jumped into a nearby bush, peering out. Luckily, Eifen seemed more focused on his sister.
"Don't touch her," Jolie stood in front of her fiancée, protectively.
"Well, isn't that just adorable," Eifen chortled.
No... Nell trembled. Don't hurt her...
Of all things she wanted least, it was this. She wanted to scream, she wanted to shout, but all her words failed. She was shaking so badly.
Eifen shoved Jolie aside. She landed with a harsh thud to her head. She went still.
"No...!" Nell croaked.
"I really don't want to use violence against you anymore, sister dearest," Eifen told her. "After all, you're our kingdom's oracle."
Nell felt herself shaking. But this time, it wasn't fear.
It was rage. How dare he. How dare he come into her club, hurt her fiancée, her friends. Innocent princesses and princes who had done nothing wrong.
She wanted to rip his face off, if only to make him feel a slither of all the pain he'd inflicted on her. She hated him, hated him with every fiber of her being, her very soul.
"Nell," Eifen put a hand on his chest. "You know your place. You belong in the Stripe Kingdom. You're the hero of it, are you not? Our dear kingdom needs our princess back." He offered a hand. "Return peacefully, return as a hero. Come back as the princess we always-"
"Shut up," Nell muttered.
"Hmm?" Eifen asked.
"Shut up." Nell repeated.
Eifen just laughed it off. "Oh, Nell, you don't understand-"
"SHUT UP!!" Nell screamed.
She jumped forward, landing on him. He cried out as Nell ripped into his skin, scratching him like a wild animal.
Gwen hid her face. She couldn't watch this.
Eifen let out a roar of pain. Nell dug her nails into his eyes, blood pouring down his cheeks.
There were so many things she wanted to say to her brother. But speaking had never been her strong point. So, she could only hope that some of the rage, pain and anguish that he'd caused her and her friends was felt by the piercing of his own eyes, the blood pouring down his cheeks, the screams of suffering.
She understood now. He was not her family. The club, Jolie, everyone involved, they were her family. They were the ones she loved, and they were the ones she would protect.
Eifen cried out, shoving her back. She was slammed against a tree. Her head was spinning.
"You stupid bitch," Eifen muttered.
Covering his eyes, he stormed towards her, holding a knife to her throat.
Nell could see it now. This was the real Eifen, the one that hid behind the charm and the smiles. The ugly beast had finally reared his head.
"This is all your fault," he told her. "All of this could've been avoided, if only you'd cooperated."
Nell gulped, the knife piercing her throat. Her brother stood above her, smiling maniacally.
"All of your friends, this entire club, your fiancée..." Eifen chuckled. "It's all gone now."
A wave of nausea passed over Nell.
"You have nothing left," Eifen told her. "Without me, you are nothing! And you never will be. The Stripe Kingdom is the only place for you... because everywhere else, you will fall, and you will die. You can't run from your destiny, Nell."
Nell breathed out heavily.
"Pathetic," Eifen continued. "This is what happens to those who disobey the crown-"
BANG
Eifen stopped talking. He collapsed, landing on his front. Gwen was standing behind him, holding up a frying pan. She was panting.
Nell just sat there, speechless. She slowly stood up.
"Oh, gosh, Nell..." Gwen gasped. "Are you okay? I-"
Nell raced forward, embracing Gwen. Tears filled her eyes.
"Thank you," she whispered.
Eifen's goons were awkwardly standing around, the members of the club standing above the guy himself. Injuries were being patched up. Prez herself had a bandage on her leg. Gwen sat next to Frederick, holding his hand.
"What now?" one of the goons asked.
The club members glowered at him.
"I recommend meditation," Whitney stepped forward. "It will help clear your mind."
The goons shrugged at each other. They began sweat-beading once Thermidora held up her claws.
Jolie had a bandage around her head. Nell stood next to her, her eyes watering.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"It's okay," Jolie replied, "we're all safe now."
"So..." Saffron stared at the unconscious Stripe prince. "What are we gonna do about him?"
The members went quiet.
"Nell?" Prez asked, reaching out. "He's your brother, after all. What do you want to do?"
Nell stared at Eifen. She wanted to choke him, rip his face off. She wanted to scream until her face went blue.
Nell turned to the other members, who were staring at her with concern. She wished she knew the words to tell them all how much they meant to her, how honoured she was to have them as her family. Her eyes were blurry with tears.
She couldn't put them in danger any longer.
"Everyone..." she whispered. "Thank you."
She stared at Jolie, who simply smiled at her.
"But now, I..." Nell trailed off. "I want to leave."
Chapter 16: Chapter 15 - Lace Kingdom
Notes:
CPC IS BACK AAAA
Chapter Text
Jolie squeezed Nell's hand. Nell swallowed, looking away.
They were finally at the Lace Palace. It was on top of a hill, overlooking the Lace kingdom. It was a great view, a pretty kingdom. Nell couldn't believe she was really here. It was a dream no longer.
"Are you ready?" Jolie asked.
Nell nodded. And the two entered the palace, lace doors swinging open.
"Girls!" the Lace Queen clapped her hands. "Welcome, Welcome!"
The king and queen were standing there, big grins on their faces. There was lace all across the hall, including the carpet, and covering the windows. Lace maids bowed.
"Nell!" the Lace Queen raced over. "So good to see you again!"
"How was the trip?" the king asked.
"Um..." Nell looked down, awkwardly. "Good."
"Lovely to hear," the queen clapped. "Would you like something to eat?"
"Sure," Nell replied.
She was seated at the table, a lace tablecloth on top. Jolie sat next to her.
A maid offered her tea and biscuits, which she accepted. Of course, the plates had lace as well.
Nell took a few of the biscuits. More food was placed in front of her; chips, sandwiches, pizza, soup, etc...
So much food... she blinked.
"Anything else you want?" the king asked.
"I think we're good, Dad," Jolie chuckled.
Nell hid her burning cheeks, Jolie's parents standing nearby. She sipped some of her tea, silently wishing Jolie's parents would stop hovering over her like hawks. They were nice, of course, if not a little overbearing.
"Oh, Nell, I'll show you to your room after this!" The queen clapped.
"You've made me a room already?" Nell asked.
"Well, we got a little over excited," the king admitted.
"You can let us know if you don't like it!" the queen added.
Nell eyed Jolie.
"They just kept going on about 'having another daughter'," Jolie admitted, chuckling. "Don't mind them."
Nell focused on her tea. It was like the CPC all over again! Perhaps home wasn't that far after all...
"Here it is!!!!"
Nell looked around the moderate bedroom; there was a large bed in the corner, lace curtains covering the window. A small desk was sitting there, with a few books. There were pillows all across the bed.
"Is this room okay?" the queen asked. "Jolie told us you like to sleep, so we made sure to put lots of pillows here." She pointed to the closet. "There's extra blankets in there, too..." she gasped. "Oh, this room isn't too big or too small, is it?"
"It's fine," Nell assured her.
She just wanted to be alone, more than anything. She was so exhausted.
"Great to hear," the queen clapped her hands. "I'll leave you to settle in, but don't hesitate to come and see me if you need anything!"
Nell felt a warmth in her chest. It was just like being at the club, everyone offering a helping hand.
"Thank you," Nell whispered.
The Lace queen left her alone. Nell flopped onto the bed, closing her eyes.
She wondered if this was the family she'd missed out on her whole life. Already, Jolie's parents had shown her more affection than her own family could ever dream of.
She hadn't had a negative prophecy in a while, not since... her brother. She could only hope the club was faring well, too...
Finally... she could sleep easy.
"Nell?"
Nell stirred. She sat up; Jolie was at her bedroom door.
"I'm going out to town for a visit," Jolie told her. "You're welcome to come, if you like."
Nell rolled over, hiding beneath her blankets.
"That's fine," Jolie assured her. "I'll see you later, Nell!"
Nell was alone once again. She sat up, leaning against the wall. She grimaced; she couldn't stand it anymore. She had to see what Jolie was up to.
She snuck out of the palace, hovering nearby the walls. The guards didn't seem bothered by her at all.
She followed Jolie, who was walking towards the Main Street. She walked over to a bakery.
"Hello, Mr Williams!" she greeted.
"Oh, your highness!" the baker bowed. "You're back! It's so good to see you."
Jolie nodded. "Thank you! You too. How's your wife?"
"She's doing great!" Mr Williams replied. "I'll tell her you stopped by."
Jolie handed him some coins. "I'll take a few to go!"
"Oh, you don't have to pay, your majesty!" Mr Williams laughed.
"Please, take it," Jolie insisted. "I may be a princess, but I'm also just a customer!"
"Thank you," the baker bowed, giving her some bread rolls.
Jolie continued walking. She stopped at a dress shop.
"Princess Jolie!" some women came racing out.
"Heya, Daisy, Gemma!" Jolie greeted.
"It's been so long!" the women sobbed. "Come inside! We've been working on some new dresses."
And Jolie was ushered inside, trying on a bunch of dresses.
"These are beautiful," she told the women, admiring herself in the mirror.
They both grinned. "Thank you, your highness!"
Nell felt her cheeks burning. Jolie looked so pretty, so divine.
Jolie waved to the dressmakers, reaching the florist.
"Gosh, these are so pretty!" she smelled some roses.
"Thank you, your majesty," the florist bowed.
She offered some money. "I'll buy some for my fiancée!"
"Oh, of course!" the florist handed her a bouquet. "I hope your fiancée likes them!"
"I'm sure she will," Jolie grinned.
Nell's heart was beating so fast.
And Jolie continued her walk, waving to the people of her kingdom, like they were all her dear friends. She stopped by the local hospital, visiting the people inside.
Nell observed her fiancée, watching as she visited all the patients, smiling and shaking their hands. It seemed like Jolie knew everyone in the entire kingdom.
Finally, Jolie left, continuing her walk. She reached the edge of the kingdom. She sat on a hill, overlooking the sunset. Nell kept in the bushes nearby.
"It's a great view," Jolie told Nell, without facing her.
Nell went red. "Uh..."
Jolie patted them spot beside her. Nell crept over, hiding her face.
"How long did you know I was there?" Nell asked.
"Oh, the whole time," Jolie told her. "I'm used to watching out for you."
Nell went even more red. "Right."
Jolie held her hand. "Look!"
She pointed at the sun, which was setting at last.
"The best view in the whole kingdom," Jolie smiled.
Nell watched the gorgeous orangey-pink filling the sky. She felt her hand sliding into Jolie's.
"You... know everyone in the kingdom," she said, voice croaking.
"Well, I am the Crown Princess," Jolie chuckled.
"How do you keep up with them all?" Nell asked. "Do they know about your curse?"
"They're used to it," Jolie admitted, "it's just like the CPC. Most people like having someone to talk to."
And Nell was in awe of her fiancée once again.
"So, when do you want the wedding to be?" Jolie asked.
Nell shrugged. "Anytime is fine."
"Yeah," Jolie agreed, as Nell leaned her head on her shoulder, "no rush."
And Nell finally felt at peace.
Chapter 17: Chapter 16 - Double Date
Chapter Text
Their first ever double date. Nell grimaced, hiding her face.
"You really sure you're ready?" Jolie asked. "They'll understand if you..."
"I'm ready," Nell assured her.
Jolie observed her fiancee. She was wearing a lace dress, just like Jolie's. Her hair was shorter; she'd got it cut not long after her arrival at the Lace Kingdom, whereas Jolie had let her hair grow out.
"What about you?" Nell asked.
Jolie grinned. "Of course!"
They had returned to the Pastel Kingdom. They hadn't been there for so long. It was a sight for sore eyes.
Of course, they weren't there to attend a certain club. The lovers were there to go on a date with two other lovers - aka a double date.
The two stood beside the cute little pastel café. Jolie beamed; she'd always enjoyed the Pastel Kingdom, even if she had spent most of that time in a creepy forest.
She sighed. She missed the club. Dang it, even if she had only joined it for Nell's sake, that didn't mean she didn't care about the other members. The slumber parties, lectures, volunteering...
She missed it all.
She turned to Nell, who was looking around, cautiously.
Jolie felt sick to her stomach. It was all thanks to Nell's own family that she'd be paranoid for the rest of her life. And after the stunt that her brother had pulled...
Jolie squeezed Nell's hand once again. Nell perked up, noticing some familiar faces.
"There they are!" she chirped.
She waved at Gwen and Frederick. Gwen was dressed in a pale green dress, with a pastel-pink cardigan. Frederick was wearing an oversized pastel-green hoodie, and his usual dark gray pants.
"Hi guys!" Jolie waved, cheerfully.
Nell gave a small wave of her own.
"Hello!" Gwen greeted, hugging Jolie. "It's so good to see you two!"
Jolie returned the hug.
"You look great," Gwen told her.
"Oh, thank you," Jolie returned the beam. "So do you! I've missed you."
She turned to Frederick, giving him an awkward hug.
"You look a lot less stressed than the last time we saw you, Frederick," she told him. "The pastel suits you!"
"Well, I have been getting used to this place," he admitted.
Nell waved, hiding behind Jolie.
"How are you going, Nell?" Gwen asked, kindly.
Nell shrugged. "Better."
"We've been good," Jolie spoke up. "How about you two?"
"It's been... messy," Gwen admitted, "but... things are looking up! Right?"
"Yeah," Frederick agreed, sweating.
The four were seated inside the nice little cafe. Nell sat by the pink wall, her shoulders hunched over. She looked around at the other customers, hiding her face.
Gwen gazed at her with concern. Jolie leaned closer to Nell.
"What are you going to have?" she asked her friends.
"This cake looks nice," Gwen pointed at the menu.
"I'll just have a sandwich," Frederick said.
"... I'll have the pancakes," Nell muttered.
"Tea for me," Jolie grinned.
The waitress arrived and took their orders.
"So, what have you guys been up to?" Jolie asked.
"Lots of stuff," Gwen replied. "Did you know Frederick is writing a book?"
Frederick went red. "Uh... yeah."
"Oh, you are?" Jolie turned to him. "What's it about?"
Frederick looked away. "Um... fairy tail stuff."
"He's a very good writer," Gwen spoke up. "The publisher we spoke to seemed very interested."
Frederick hid his face. "G-Gwen!"
"Oh, sounds exciting!" Jolie replied. "Let us know when your book is done!"
"... ok," Frederick squeaked.
"What about you two?" Gwen asked. "What have you been up to?"
"We've been planning some big stuff," Jolie grinned, nodding at her fiancee.
"Yeah," Nell agreed.
"Big stuff?" Gwen asked, raising a brow.
Jolie clapped her hands. "Our wedding, for one. Then our honeymoon, possibly getting a pet..."
"The wedding!" Gwen gasped. "When's that?"
"Oh yes," Jolie grinned. "It'll be soon!"
The waiter brought over the drinks and meals. Jolie sipped her tea, while Nell tucked into her pancakes. The four sat in silence. A looming topic was hanging above them.
"So..." Frederick eyed his sandwich. "Um... your family..."
"Have they always been like that, Nell?" Gwen finished.
Nell looked away.
"Oh, sorry," Gwen raised a hand. "We shouldn't have asked, we know-"
"The Stripe Kingdom has always been very... cult-like, to put it lightly," Nell said.
"Cult-like...?" Frederick shivered.
"They have spies all over the place," Nell continued, "being at the club not only posed a danger to myself, but to everyone else as well. That's why I had to leave. I can't put you guys in danger anymore, after all you've done for me."
"Oh, Nell," Gwen assured her. "You shouldn't have to feel guilty! You're a great friend, and-"
"Thanks, Gwen, but it's the truth," Nell replied. "You guys taught me that not everyone is a monster like my family, though. You helped me be strong. I can't thank you enough for that. So, for once, I want to do something for you. I want you to be safe."
And to that, she smiled once more. Her eyes welled up, just a little.
"We just want you to be happy," Gwen told her. "Are you really okay with stepping away?"
Nell looked away. "You've already made me happy. I get to be with the love of my life." She nodded at Jolie. "But... are you happy, Gwen?"
Gwen stared at Frederick, then at Jolie.
"Yeah," she grinned. "I am."
Nell gave her a nod. She was glad to be with her real family. The paranoa would always be there, but she knew she had her friends to support her.
The double date was over at last. Jolie and Nell held hands, facing their friends. The sun was setting.
"That was fun!" Jolie grinned. "Thanks, guys!"
"Our pleasure," Gwen returned the beam.
She and Jolie gave each other another hug. Nell was staring at Frederick.
"Um..." he looked away.
"Sorry," Nell said.
"Huh?" Frederick asked.
"About hissing at you on that day," Nell got out.
Frederick sighed. "It's fine. I shouldn't have... I shouldn't have barged into your room like that."
"You're forgiven," Nell offered a hand.
And they shook hands on that.
"Oh!" Jolie gasped. "One more thing. We were talking about it before!"
She handed the two an invitation each. Gwen gasped in surprise.
YOU'RE INVITED TO THE WEDDING OF PRINCESS JOLIE AND PRINCESS NELL!
"Don't tell the CPC yet," Jolie giggled. "We'll get to them!"
Chapter 18: Chapter 17 - Wedding, part 1
Notes:
A/N: The penultimate chapter! Last chapter is the ending.
Chapter Text
The wedding had finally come. Maids raced around the Lace Palace. Decorations were placed on the walls, and food was placed on the laced tables.
Jolie swirled around in her wedding dress. It was gorgeous, detailed with lace patterns. Her long hair flowed out behind her.
She stared at herself in the mirror. She wondered if she should wear her eye mask, but... no. It was a selfish request, but she truly wanted to be herself. And hey, what better day to be selfish than her own wedding day?
Not a whole lot of people were going to attend the wedding; she didn't want Nell to get overwhelmed. Nell certainly had gotten a lot better with people, but she still hated large crowds. As much as Jolie had wanted to invite basically the entire kingdom, she had to put her to-be wife's feelings first.
Perhaps I'll have a party some other time, she decided.
Despite her anxieties, Nell was looking forward to the wedding - Jolie could tell. She was jittering with excitement. Her cheeks were burning. The former stripe princess was looking the best she had in years. While her curse never truly went away, she was smiling so much more. Jolie was so proud of how far she'd come.
Jolie sighed, overlooking her kingdom once more. Celebrations were spreading throughout the land. She was proud of her people, too. They were always so resilient, so kind, so loving. She was honored to be their princess.
Her to-be wife stood next to her.
"This'll be your kingdom soon," she told Nell. "You'll be a princess of the Lace Kingdom!"
Nell swallowed. She couldn't believe it; it almost didn't feel real.
Part of her wasn't sure she deserved the freedom, the happiness.
No. That was her old thoughts creeping back in. She was stronger, stronger than all that. She was a person who deserved love, just like everyone else.
And it was all thanks to Jolie. She had taught her the language of love.
"Hello, girls!" Jolie's mother came in. "Sorry to interrupt - I'm just so excited!"
Of course, Jolie's parents had been going on about the wedding for ages. Nell had to admit, she was getting used to them being overbearing.
"Thanks, Mom," Jolie beamed.
"It's going to be official soon!!" the queen gushed. "Ahh! I mean, Nell, don't worry, we already see you as family, but... you know, it'll be in the history books now!"
Nell flushed. "Um... yeah."
Jolie's mother came over, squeezing Nell's shoulder. "We're honoured to have you in our family, Nell. Thank you for making our daughter so happy."
Nell's heart fluttered. "Honestly, it was really her that did all the work."
"Don't sell yourself short," the queen reassured her. "You've changed her world, just as much as she's changed yours."
Nell bowed her head. "Thank you... Mom."
The queen smiled. "Anytime, dear."
Jolie's dad burst in, holding out some cupcakes. "These are amazing! The chefs really outdid themselves."
"Oh, dear, be careful with those!" the queen giggled. "You're going to spill them everywhere!"
Nell breathed out. Sure, Jolie's parents were embarrassing, but she was honored to call them her family.
Seriously? Frederick groaned, staring at the front of the Lace Kingdom. This hill is even worse than the one at the Pastel Kingdom...
Gwen was standing next to him, a gentle smile on her face. Frederick breathed out. Well, if Gwen was with him, he could do anything.
"Hey guys!!"
The couple turned around; some members of the CPC were standing there. Of course, there was Prez, alongside Syrah, Saffron, Abbi, and Thermidora.
"Only 5 of you?" Frederick asked.
"Jolie told us Nell would get overwhelmed with any more," Prez admitted.
"Oh, that's fair enough," Gwen admitted. "It's great to see you guys!"
"You too," Prez returned the beam.
She wrapped Prez in a hug, the other girls joining in.
"Thank god you're here, man," Saffron told Frederick. "I'd go insane if I was the only guy."
"But weren't you the only guy in the CPC?" Frederick asked.
"Don't remind me," Saffron groaned.
The group made their way to the Lace Palace. Inside, everything had been dressed up. The maids in glorious outfits, the food tables, the banners and music. There were rows of white chairs, facing towards the front.
"Wow, they really got it all set up!" Syrah clapped.
"So beautiful," Thermidora gushed. "I'm tearing up already!"
"I'm so ready for this!!" Abbi cheered.
There weren't a whole lot of people inside the palace, just as Jolie had mentioned. It seemed most of the guests were Jolie's family and a few citizens from the kingdom. Speaking of Jolie, the Lace Princess raced over to the group.
"Hey, guys!" she waved.
"Yo, girl!" Syrah clapped. "You look amazing!"
"Thank you, thank you," Jolie smiled. "You all look great too!"
It was so good to see her friends again. Jolie had missed the club more than words could say.
"Hello, hello!" the king and queen came over.
"Hey, I remember you!" the king stared at Prez. "You're the one who took Jolie to the Pastel Kingdom, all that time ago!"
"Uh... yep," Prez grinned. "That's me!"
"It's so good to see you again," the queen clapped. "Welcome, Welcome! We're so honoured to finally meet some of our daughter's friends!"
After the king and queen shook hands with everyone (except for Thermidora for obvious reasons), Jolie gave them the grand tour. She was so glad to have her friends visiting; she'd always wanted to show them around.
"You really went all out," Prez said, admiring the palace.
"Well, if you're going to go all out on any day," Jolie replied, shrugging.
"Girl's got a point," Syrah agreed.
Gwen turned to Jolie. "Where's Nell?"
"She's still getting ready," Jolie told her. "You guys relax in the meantime. Help yourself to whatever you want." She gestured at the food tables.
"More punch for me," Saffron clapped, taking off.
("So much for us guys sticking together," Frederick muttered.)
Gwen wandered around, admiring the decorations. Frederick trailed behind her. He was thankful the wedding didn't have too many attendants; he'd had more than enough parties with tons of people.
"They've been through so much," Gwen sighed. "I'm glad they finally get to have their wedding!"
"Yeah," Frederick agreed. Huh. For once, he was actually enjoying a party.
Gwen took his hand, making him blush. "Come on. I can't wait for it to start!"
The other members of the CPC sat down. Prez stood nearby Jolie.
"We're all proud of you and Nell," she informed her.
"Thank you, Prez," Jolie wrapped Prez in a hug. "I'm glad we're friends."
"The pleasure is all mine," Prez said, returning the hug.
Thermidora gasped, as Syrah put her arms around her, Abbi and Saffron.
"I'll sing a song for the two lovers!" the lobster princess gasped. She opened her mouth, beginning to sing. Saffron attempted to cover his ears, but his cursed hand just went up his nose instead. Abbi burst out laughing.
"Um, maybe not," Syrah quickly shushed Thermidora.
Jolie giggled. She joined her friends; they all stood together, for one final hug.
Suddenly, wedding music began to play. Everyone took their seats.
Jolie took her place by the altar. She smiled. It was finally time.

Chapter Text
Nell gazed at herself in the mirror. This was it. This was the moment it all came together.
She was in her wedding dress, wearing a lace crown. Her eyes were still red, but not as much as before. Her shaved bangs were across her forehead. She never thought she'd see the day. Once upon a time, she thought she'd be stuck inside that cage forever, a prisoner to her own family.
But she was free now, a free bird. She was here, with her new family, and the love of her life. What more could she ask for?
She never thought she'd achieve happiness. She never even thought she'd find love. But life was full of surprises. It seemed, for once, it had given her something food. Nell had never felt so lucky, so honoured.
She was going to walk down the aisle, proving how far she'd come when it came to social interaction. Once upon a time, she could barely speak to others without hissing. For the first time in her life, she was proud of herself.
She couldn't wipe the smile off her face. Her eyes were misty. This was her fairytale ending.
She peeked out into the hall; she spied her friends. Jolie, of course, was showing them around. They seemed interested, gazing at all the decorations.
Nell flushed. Of course, she'd been expecting them, but it was still nice to see her friends. Her heart panged. She'd missed them more than she wanted to admit.
A maid approached her. "Are you okay, Your highness?"
Nell nodded. "Yeah. Couldn't be better."
She spoke from the heart. At last, she finally got to feel like a real princess.
It's been a long time since I last visited the Stripe Kingdom. I still can't believe that woman actually kidnapped the princess... and she still hasn't been found! Hmm... things are looking rough these days. Apparently, the crown prince got attacked, and he's gone blind in one eye. He hasn't said much about what happened, but who knows what he's planning...
I wasn't sure, but I'd heard rumours about something else... Apparently, the Stripe Princess was getting married to the Lace Princess. So that's what brought me to the Lace Kingdom.
Luckily for me, everyone there was super friendly. They answered my questions with no qualms, confirming the rumours.
That got me by surprise. I'd thought all the rumours were complete lies. I mean, that princess in a cage? She was getting married? In this kingdom, which couldn't be more different than the Stripe Kingdom?
... Honestly, good for her. She deserves the happiness.
Unfortunately it was a private event. Personal reasons, supposedly. But screw that. I'm a journalist! I have to stick my nose into everything. I just can't help it. It was time to go super spy mode.
Approaching the castle, I stayed by the bushes. I could hear chattering from all the way inside. Guards were standing around, weapons in hand.
I could be stealthy, but I was no match against a bunch of burly guards. Yeah, they were covered in lace, but they weren't to be underestimated.
Curiosity was one damn annoying cat, though. Sticking to the bushes, I peered through the window. Call me a voyeurist all you like, I had to get my scoop.
Inside, I saw a small group of funny-looking people. One of them had lobster claws for some reason?? Another one had a very long nose, and I swear one of them was a witch...
I also saw the very same woman who'd rescued the Stripe Princess all that time ago. Good to see they were still in touch.
"Hi."
I jumped back. A pair of eyes - actually, a lack thereof - was staring right into my soul. It was none other than the Lace Princess herself, Princess Jolie.
"Oh, um, sorry," I flushed, backing away from the window. "I know I shouldn't be here, but-"
"You're a journalist, right?" she asked.
"Yeah...." I got out. "How'd you know?"
"Just a bunch," the princess giggled.
Well, I was holding my writing supplies.
"Um, Princess Jolie," I spoke, quietly.
"Yes?" she tilted her head.
"Is it fine if I do some reporting?" I asked.
"Next time, ask first," she chortled.
"So... yes?" I questioned.
"Well, my bride doesn't want too many people inside," she told me.
"Oh," I frowned.
"I said inside," she winked, then left me alone.
Ah ha! I snapped my fingers. As long as I don't go in, I can report all I want!
So, I watched the little wedding, crouched in a bush, leaves scratching my skin. The guards didn't bother me, at least - even though I must've looked like some kind of stalker.
Still, I could see all the lace decorations. The fancy-looking people. And the funny-looking ones, too. Princess Jolie's dress was absolutely gorgeous, with so many little details.
Before long, everyone was sitting down. This was it. The bride was coming.
The Stripe Princess - Princess Nell - was standing there, dressed in her flowing lace dress. Well, I suppose... she's not a stripe princess anymore. She's a Lace princess now.
I leaned up against the window, almost like a kid at a candy store.
She walked down the aisle, the small group of people watching in awe. Princess Nell reached Princess Jolie at the end of the hall. The celebrant stood there, grinning at the both of them.
"We are gathered here today to celebrate the union of these two princesses," he said, "bringing together their deepening love."
In the audience, I noticed the Lace Queen's eyes welling up with tears. The Lace King blew into his handkerchief.
"Princess Jolie," the celebrant turned to said princess, "do you take Princess Nell to be your wife, and to love and cherish her for the rest of your life?"
"I do," Princess Jolie replied.
"And do you, Princess Nell, take Princess Jolie to be your wife, and to love and cherish her for the rest of your life?" the celebrant asked Princess Nell.
Princess Nell's eyes were misty. "I do."
The celebrant smiled. "You may now kiss."
And they did, kissing sweetly. The group got into a big cheer, clapping wildly. The King and Queen got up, tears streaming down their face.
Even though I didn't know either of the princesses personally, I couldn't help but smile to myself. They were so happy, so free. From what I'd heard, Princess Nell had, well, not a great upbringing. She deserved to be happy, with someone who loved her.
Some time later, Princess Jolie was leaning against the wall, looking down at me.
"Thanks for letting me watch," I said. "You two seem happy together."
"Of course," Princess Jolie beamed, "stay out of trouble, okay?"
I chuckled. "Yeah, yeah..."
Gosh, her eyes were creepy. But hey... I'd seen weirder.
Nell sighed, closing her eyes. She leaned her head on Jolie's shoulder. The sunset was gorgeous.
"You ready for the honeymoon?" Jolie asked.
Nell nodded, kissing her cheek.
"I don't deserve you," she uttered.
"You're right," Jolie replied.
"Huh?" Nell spat.
"You deserve the whole world," Jolie giggled.
And Nell was laughing too, so honoured, so thankful she finally understood the language of love.
