Living with you has been my greatest adventure

Summary:

It literally seems like yesterday to him that they were changing his diaper, teaching him how to talk, and walking him step by step through the difficult period of adolescence, fragments of memories and photographs hanging on the wall that have witnessed an entire life together, and will become more and more so now that Tommy's life is about to take a completely unexpected turn; they have been through a lot they have overcome difficulties and times when things haven't been all roses, but they have come out of it together as a family, and, seeing his son now at the altar, is an immense joy for Jon that he never thought he would experience.

Work Text:

Jon smiles and runs a hand through his hair, his gaze fixed on the wicker arch set with flowers and ears of corn intertwined with each other.

Just below it, Tommy is arguing with Damian, who, rolling his eyes, is futilely trying to fix Tommy's tie that just won't cooperate, and Jon can't tell at that moment which of the two is the more nervous.

He almost laughs at the sight of Damian who has begun speaking animatedly in Arabic 'cause of nervousness, even though he knows he's trying to calm Tommy who already has a sweat-soaked forehead; if he didn't know him, Jon might bet he is panicking and having second thoughts, but he knows it's just pre-wedding nervousness. Even he bailed for half an hour despite the fact that he and Damian had been living together for years, and he knows from reliable sources - Jason - that Damian spent that half hour picking on poor defenseless dummies under the amused gaze of a young Tommy who even helped him put them back on their feet. All those memories pass through Jon's mind like frames from an old movie, slides that still do not fade despite his old age, for they are precious memories that his half-Kryptonian brain, no matter how much he no longer possesses his powers, manages to store up without fail. And he holds them close to himself, treasures them, is he thinks that the choice he made years ago is worth all that he and his family experienced during those years.

When the wedding march begins to play, that's the signal for all the guests to sit down, and Damian too, adjusting Tommy's tie one last time and also his twins - there's a whole generation of Wayne and Kent on his wrists, as if he also carries with him his grandparents and great-grandparents who are no longer there -, finally takes his seat next to Jon. And there she's Amanda, beautiful in her white wedding dress, with a bouquet of sunflowers that seems to set off her hair in a thousand golden facets. It was an unusual choice - Jon believed to the last that she would choose classic white lilies, but Amanda has always been able to amaze everyone - and yet Jon realizes that other flowers would probably not have had the same effect. She's as radiant as the sun itself, the smile painted on her rosy, plump lips creates delicious dimples in her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, and Jon can swear to himself that he has never seen either her or Tommy so happy.

Everything is as it should be, time has taken its course and friendship has little by little turned into love, guiding the steps of Tommy and Mandy to that exact moment in front of each other; the joined hands, the awkward smiles, the love in their eyes and the frenzy of that instant that seems to slip over their skin, moments that have led them to share life from now on under the gaze of every single member of their families. Jon doesn't want to sound too sappy, yet in that moment he sees himself in his son as he awkwardly says those vows, clasps Mandy's hands and doesn't look away from her, and Jon is certain that Tommy could soar even without possessing any power, for he has the air of a man who could touch the sky with one finger and burst with joy.

During the ceremony, Jon turns only for a second to his father, alone in the corner but with a smile that would make the sun go pale, and while it saddens him to see him without his mother - as was to be expected, Lois's humanity has run its course and Clark is the only one left of the old guard - Jon is happy to see him there, for his presence is a point of reference for Damian in Bruce's absence as well. His death was a blow, but everyone was aware that it would happen... it's the course of life. Knowing, then, that at least his father is there for all three of them, the last bastion of a generation that taught them so much, it's something that moves Jon, and it's with a smile that Jon returns to watch the ceremony, shaking the hand that Damian has rested on his arm. The calluses on his fingers and the skin made rough and a little wrinkled by old age are a staple for Jon, the knowledge of a lifetime spent together and more years still ahead of them. And that's when he hears it, a small, badly stifled sob and a sniffle, and he looks just a little to his right, toward Damian.

    «Hey... are you crying?»

Damian rubs the sleeve of his jacket over his eyes, but straightens his back as he stares sternly straight ahead, not taking his eyes off the arch under which the ceremony is taking place. «Don't talk nonsense,» he says, but Jon chuckles to himself and increases his grip on that hand, the golden kryptonite ring gleaming in the sunlight.

«I'm getting emotional too,» he retorts quietly, and he certainly doesn't hide his glazed eyes as he watches Tommy, with trembling hand, slip the ring onto Amanda's finger. «I can't believe he's getting married.»

«It seems like yesterday he was sleeping like a bundle in my arms,» Damian retorts, and this time he doesn't mind the tears of joy slipping at the corners of his eyes. «And look at him now.» He slowly wipes them away, but he does not stop smiling. «Living with you has been my greatest adventure, Jonathan... and now it's time for our son to live it too.»

This time it's Jon who lets a sob escape, though he chuckles to himself as he wraps an arm around his husband's hips. «If you wanted to make me cry, you did it, D.»

«Maybe,» Damian whispers, laying doses a little against him. And they rest their heads against each other's, smiling serenely as Tommy - their baby, their son, the most precious thing in the whole universe - seals with a kiss the beginning of the time of his new life.
