My Only Sunshine

Summary:

You are my sunshine

My only sunshine

You make me happy

When skies are gray

You'll never know dear

How much I love you

Please don't take

My sunshine away

Work Text:

Roman and Virgil were having a good day, they had gone on a date and now they had gotten back to their house, smiling as they giggled, drunk on one another’s love. When they got inside, Virgil sat Roman down and took out a small music box that the couple shared, he sang along with it as he wound it up,

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy, when skies are gray, you’ll never know dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away” it was one of the first, if not the first song that Virgil sang to Roman at the beginning of their relationship. Roman sat there, a love struck look on his face as he listened to Virgil’s sweet voice.

“I have a surprise for you” Virgil said after they had settled in, some show or another, cuddled into one another. Virgil pulled out a small CD case and handed it to Roman, the case was hand painted and Roman was absolutely swooning.

“What is this honey?” Roman asked, already having a feeling of what it was.

A knowing smile made its way onto Virgil’s face as he kissed his fiance on the cheek before divulging what the present was,

“It’s a soundtrack of lullabies for you to listen to when I’m not around” The sentence had a slightly somber tone to it, but Roman didn’t seem to pick up on it, he was too excited and overwhelmed with love to pick up on it. “The first and last songs on it are ‘You Are My Sunshine’, since it means so much to both of us”

“You are so sweet my darling, I am so happy that I have this, now I can have your voice no matter where I go” He responded, holding Virgil closer to him. The moment was sweet, and Virgil found himself wishing it could last forever, and that the heavyweight in his heart would go away.

It had been hours since Roman had gone to work, but Virgil still had a little bit before he got home. He went into the bathroom and grabbed a bottle of pills, taking the entire thing, hoping that they would kill him.

After the pills were taken, Virgil grabbed his notebook and made his way to the living room, he wrote out a note to Roman, his final words to the world,

Hey there sunshine, I’m sorry I did this, I’m sorry that I’m gone, I love you so much, and I don’t know what I’d do without you, but I can’t keep living anymore. You’re such a wonderful light in my life and I am so happy to have had you for all these years,

I love you more than anything else in this world,

Your Sunshine, Virgil.

When Roman got home, Virgil was still alive, but barely, Roman rushed to him, reading the note, tears springing in his eyes. He called an ambulance, panicking as he did so, but something in him told him that it was too late for help, he scooped Virgil up in his arms and began to sing to him,

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy, when skies are gray, you’ll never know dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away” Roman clung to Virgil, his voice cracking as he sang, and soon, he couldn’t even feel the feeble breaths coming from Virgil anymore, his love was dead.

A year later, Roman visited the graveyard, a bouquet of lavenders, baby’s breath, and white roses in hand, he kneeled down at the grave and wiped at his eyes, the tears already streaming down his face,

“Hey there sunshine, I miss you, it’s so hard to be here when you’re not, but I’m living, I met this guy, Logan, he loves space just as much as you do, he makes me happy, but he’s not you, I hope you’ve been put to rest and you aren’t suffering anymore. I love you sunshine” He couldn’t speak anymore, as he broke down crying, he pulled out his phone and opened an audio file, pressing play.

Virgil’s voice came out of the phone, and Roman sobbed even harder, listening to his love sing made his heart break all over again. He sobbed, but whispered the words along with Virgil’s singing.

“You took my sunshine away”
