The Hail Mary had failed.
Silver was gone. Robotnik was torn to shreds. Tails and Knuckles were missing in action.
The zombots were encroaching on them. The world was doomed.
And yet, Amy’s lips were so soft. The infection had not yet taken her yet, nor had it fully taken over the body of her hero. He was still able to feel her arms caressing him, holding him close.
Her still beating heart was matching his in rate and excitement, although Sonic would not have been surprised had either of them jumped out of their chests.
Over the groans and gnashing of the mechanical monsters slowly encroaching on them, Sonic furrowed his brow in concentration.
What did she—?
It hit him like a smack across the face.
Her fur, soft as a fresh blanket of powdery snow, carried the breezy scent of oil mixed with the fragrance of flowers. He was reminded of her rescue on Little Planet; the ruined Metal Sonic and the sunflower she had offered him upon a safe landing.
Maybe her fur, when covered in metal, would still be soft.
Her cheerful smile and glistening eyes. Those eyes that had looked upon him in terror when everything they had worked so hard for turned out to be for nothing. And the way they widened when he closed the gap between them and, for the first time in months, touched her as he pulled her into an embrace. They were still beautiful at that moment.
They always would be, even when the red of infection overtook the aquamarine.
Her lips, those of which he had secretly yearned for for so long, tasted of honey and cotton candy. Sweet and succulent, like her. He smiled into their kiss, memories of sharing sweets at Twinkle Park entering his mind’s eye.
Perhaps, together as mindless machines, they would wander back there together.
He sighed as Amy broke the kiss away, virus having already consumed a good portion of her body. She held her hand up to his cheek, caressing it gently. Though she was sobbing, a magnificent smile brightened her face up.
Together.
It was the end of the world.
They would go crazy and lose their minds.
Together.
