Chapter Text

He couldn’t do it anymore, Patton was smothering him, suffocating him, it was getting ridiculous. But how could he go about it? Virgil’s boyfriend was not one to take bad news well, and this breakup would probably count as terrible news. Still, he couldn’t keep living like this, he needed to come up with a plan.

After hours of thinking and going through ideas, the best thing to do would be to leave without a trace, it’d be easy, the city was big, far too big for him to be found. He could get a new job and start a new life, he did have plenty of money saved up afterall, that way he wouldn’t even have to face Patton and break the news to him, he wouldn’t be pulled back into whatever the fuck Patton was doing.

The next day went on as usual, the two woke up together, and Virgil made them breakfast, keeping his smile even keel, afterall, he had to act natural,

“Do you want orange juice or coffee?” Asked Virgil as he got out glasses and set them on the counter.

“Orange juice, and maybe add a little bit of vodka to it, you know make the day a bit more appealing” Patton replied seriously. At that Virgil sighed, it would be one long fucking day if Patton decided to drink, and he couldn’t begin his escape plan. When Patton drank, he took the day off of work and made Virgil spend time with him.

“What if you stayed sober and actually went to work today?” Sighed Virgil, handing Patton his glass of orange juice, sans vodka.

“Why are you always such a fucking dick about me drinking” Patton spat at Virgil, picking up the glass and dropping it on the floor, causing it to shatter. Virgil flinched away and took a deep breath as his palms began shaking, broken glass always gave him major anxiety.

“What the hell is wrong with you!?” he screamed back, gripping his hair with his hands in an attempt to ground himself.

“You! You’re so fucking selfish, just give me my fucking vokda, clean up this fucking mess, and give me fucking space, god Virgil you’re lucky I even give you the time of day, or that Remus even bothers to text you!” Patton was getting mean, and Virgil knew that as soon as Patton left the kitchen, Virgil would take out his cart and begin smoking weed, he needed a high rather than deal with the overwhelming emotions that he was feeling.

After Patton left, Virgil took a few hits from his cart and relished the bubblegum flavor. After a few hits, he sighed and began cleaning up the mess of glass and orange juice, his thoughts beginning to wander. Maybe Patton was right, maybe he should just settle for whatever was happening here. Could he really find someone who made him feel happy? Could he really not do any better than Patton? Were his standards really too high?

As he went down this rabbit hole, he didn’t notice the small pieces of glass getting stuck in his hands while cleaning the orange juice, so when he finally finished up the job, his hands were bleeding and he didn’t really know why at first. So, Virgil took himself into the bathroom to investigate and clean the wounds on his hands. As he did so, he figured that he was definitely being overdramatic and he should just stay with Patton, and take whatever absentee relationship that Remus was giving him.

Later that day, Virgil had his thoughts of unhappiness again, and he had no idea what to do, he needed to make a choice, follow his heart so to speak, and while he and Patton were fighting, he would leave, maybe stay with Remus for a bit, and that’s what he did, he left Patton’s place, only gathering things that he thought were important (Clothes, money, electronics, and drugs). The choice at this point was an impulse and he didn’t care much for the consequences.

As Virgil walked, he realized he probably shouldn’t be going to Remus’ apartment, he didn’t know if he’s be welcome or not, so the best thing to do would be to probably get a hotel room and live there until he could figure out where to go from there, or maybe a motel in order to save on money while he searched for apartments.

The motel he decided to stay at was swanky at best, the water was lukewarm, and the guy at the front desk warned that there may be roaches in some of the rooms, but that wasn’t really much of a concern, for 20 dollars a night he’d take bed bugs and mice too.

After setting up and logging into the shitty motel wifi, Virgil began looking at job listings and apartment openings, he was determined to get back on his feet, and far away from Patton as soon as possible.

After looking around online for about forty-five minutes, Virgil found an apartment listing, two roommates and only 300 dollars in rent and utilities, Virgil entered the number into his phone and chose to text it.

“Hi, is the apartment still open, I’m Virgil, I am interested in the apartment, I can provide 2 months rent upfront and I am currently looking for a job, let me know if you think that I can move in”

After the text was sent, Virgil took a deep breath and decided that he would let off a little bit of steam by watching Euphoria. He didn’t feel like paying for streaming services and instead he pirated the series off of some website.

In the middle of the second episode, Virgil got a text back from the person who listed the apartment.

“I’m Roman, the apartment is still open, you can move in on Wednesday if you want to, see you in three days, have a good night” and with that the apartment was secure. In celebration of copping the apartment, Virgil continued to watch Euphoria, finishing off four episodes.

He was now looking through job listings and found one close to the apartment he was going to move into, only a thirty minute bus ride away. It was an art store that was owned by what seemed like a Mexican couple. He applied for it and hoped he would get an interview on Thursday, but for now it was time to call it a night and sleep.
