Into the Caverns

Fade in:

Int. Ancient Caverns - DAY

Amy Rose is seen holding a torch up to a dimly lit wall. Long, rusty-orange streaks spell out the figures to a mysterious language. Amy brought a hand to her chin as she analyzed the carvings, her face reading deep concentration.

What she was unaware of, though, was the presence of something lurking in the shadows behind her.

SONIC: “BOO!”

AMY: “Eep!”

She dropped the torch she was holding along with her leather bag, scattering her papers across the floor.

Sonic’s laughter echoed through the cave.

SONIC: “You should have seen the look on your face! Priceless!”
He laughed, wiping a tear from his eye.

AMY: “Sonic!”
She growled, scrambling to pick up her notes. She reached for the torch. Luckily, it hadn’t scorched her papers.
AMY: “Watch it! If anything happens to these notes, you’ll meet my hammer!”
She threatened.

TAILS: “What happened?”
The two-tailed fox came rushing over, followed by Sticks and Knuckles.

KNUCKLES: “We heard someone scream.”

STICKS: “It better not be those pesky mole people again!”

AMY: “It’s okay everyone.”
She eased their worries.
AMY: “Sonic thought it would be funny to scare me.”
She shot a menacing glare at the hedgehog.

SONIC: “What? I had to liven this dull place up somehow.”
He said in defense.

Amy let out a huff.

TAILS: “Did you find anything?”

AMY: “Well, before I was so rudely interrupted…”
She shot another glare towards Sonic.
AMY: “I was trying to decipher this script on the wall.”

Everyone followed the direction of her gaze to the wall with the mysterious carvings on it.

TAILS: “What do you think it means?”

AMY: “From the looks of it, these carvings were left by another ancient group of people lost to time. I don’t recognize these symbols from anything we’ve encountered before…”
She flipped through the worn pages of one of her journals.
AMY: “I think we may have come across a new discovery!”
Her eyes lit up with excitement.

SONIC: “Give me a break. This is the same junk we’ve seen in other caves. Where’s the danger? Where’s the excitement? Where’s the boobie-traps?!”

Knuckles snickered.

KNUCKLES: “Ha ha! You said traps!”

AMY: “These carvings are not junk!”
She said defensively.
AMY: “They are the keys to an ancient civilization! Who knows what secrets await us?!”
She began to scribble away at her notes, soaking in every bit of new information from the strange carvings.

STICKS: “I don’t know… Something isn’t sitting right with me about these caves. I smell something fishy.”
She said skeptically.

KNUCKLES: “Oh, sorry. That’s just me.”

SONIC: “I’m bored. When are we going to do something fun? I’m sick of staring at scribbles on a wall.”

AMY: “Sonic, would you quit being such a-”
She was cut off when the cave began to shake. A few pieces of dirt and rocks fell from the roof of the cave. Everyone froze. Then the rumbling stopped.

TAILS: “Uh- maybe we should get out of here. This place doesn’t look stable.”
He said with his ears back.

Suddenly, a wall near Amy began to cave-in, but, before the rocks above had the chance to crush her, Sonic dashed her to safety. Once the fallen debris settled, Sonic and Amy found themselves blockaded off from their friends by a wall of rocks.

SONIC: “Tails! Knuckles, Sticks! Can you hear us?”

Tails’ muffled voice was heard from behind the wall of rocks.

TAILS: “Sonic! Amy! Are y’all alright?”

We briefly change to the perspective of Tails, Sticks, and Knuckles on the other side of the wall. Amy’s muffled voice is heard.

AMY: “We’re fine. Just trapped.”

We switch back to Sonic and Amy’s perspective.

TAILS: “You’re are going to have to find another way out. Destroying this wall wouldn’t be safe.”

SONIC: “Alright buddy, we’ll see you on the other side.”

TAILS: “We’ll keep looking for a way to get y’all out, stick together!”

Sonic and Amy turn around to see a dark tunnel leading deeper into the cavern. Unfortunately, the torch Amy had was buried under the rock wall. They both tap their communicators, activating their luminous suits. With their outfits emitting a pink and blue glow, they traverse deeper into the cave.

Int. Ancient Caverns - ???

Sonic and Amy approach a fork in their pathway.

SONIC: “Which way now?”

Amy walked to one of the branching cave tunnels and ran her hand from the wall of the cave to the floor.

Sonic raised a brow at her behavior then lifted his wrist to look at his communicator. When it responded to his touch by flickering, he hit the side of it, as if that would make it work.

SONIC: “Check your communicator again.”
He said, looking frustrated by his device’s unwillingness to cooperate.

Amy glanced down at her communicator.

AMY: “Still offline.”
She said with a sigh as she moved to the other pathway. She ran her hand along the wall in the same fashion.

AMY: “This way.”
She said, starting down the path.

SONIC: “How do you know that’s the right way?”

AMY: “The rocks are less damp this way.”

SONIC: “So.”

AMY: “So, that means we’re not heading deeper into the cave.”
She explained, walking back to him.

SONIC: “This was a bad idea. We should head back.”
He said, turning around.

Amy grabbed his arm.

AMY: “Wait, we can’t head back now.”

SONIC: “Why not?”

AMY: “Uh- b-because…”

SONIC: “We’re lost, aren’t we?”
He said flatly.

AMY: “No. We’re just- yeah okay, we’re lost.”

SONIC: “This is ridiculous! I’m blasting our way out!”

He prepared himself to spin dash.

AMY: “No, Sonic wait!”
She shouted.

Sonic uncurled.

SONIC: “What?”

AMY: “We can’t just recklessly spin into walls! What if there is another cave-in?”
At that moment, as if on cue, the path they were about to take caved-in, leaving only the damp path.

SONIC: “Did you really have to jinx it?”

Shortly into the next tunnel, they reached the end of the cave.

AMY: “Dead end.”

SONIC: “That’s it! I’m getting us out of here!”
He quickly charged up a spin dash.

AMY: “Sonic!”

Sonic dug into the wall, causing rocks to fall out of place. The entrance of the tunnel they took caved-in, leaving them trapped in the small space.

AMY: “Sonic! Stop!”
She shouted over the sound of him buzz-sawing the wall.

Sonic stopped.

SONIC: “What? I’m trying to get us out of this stupid cave!”

AMY: “Stop being so reckless! Why can’t you give your actions a little thought before you rush into them? You’re going to get us buried alive!”
She exclaimed.

SONIC: “Well, we wouldn’t even be in this mess if you didn’t insist on exploring these caves for those dumb carvings!”

That pinched a nerve for the pink hedgehog.

AMY: “Those carvings are not dumb!”
She stomped her foot.

Sonic’s angered expression shifted.

SONIC: “Uh- Amy.”

AMY: “They are essential for us to understand our past!”
She fumed.

SONIC: “Amy!”
He said, looking alarmed.

AMY: "If you’d pay attention to a thing I said you would understand how important these discoveries are to me!”

SONIC: “AMY!”

AMY: “WHAT?!”

SONIC: “WATER!”

Sonic pointed to an area in the wall where he had spin dashed before. Water was spewing out from some of the cracks in the rocks.

AMY: “Oh no. We must have hit an underground pool.”
She said with her ears back.

SONIC: “A what?!”
He said, in a state of panic.
SONIC: “Ah- What are we going to do?!”
He grabbed the quills on the sides of his head in anxiety.

AMY: “D-don’t worry. It’s not that much. It shouldn’t get any worse.”
She said in an attempt to calm his nerves.

Just then, some more rocks shot out of place from the built-up pressure behind the wall. More water spewed out of the cracks. At this point, water is pouring out of the wall.

SONIC: “Stop doing that!”

AMY: “Ah! Okay- uh. Quick! Block the cracks!”

Both, in a frenzy, try to stop the water flow, but only seem to make it worse.

SONIC: “This isn’t working!”

AMY: “Okay, okay- give me a second.”
She ran a hand through her three front quills in search of an idea.

SONIC: “We don’t have a second!”
He said, anxiously looking to the water rising at his ankles.

AMY: “Just let me think!”
She said in frustration.

SONIC: “That’s it! We’re screwed! Hope our descendants like wandering into caves like you do. Maybe THEY will find us here!”
He said, throwing his hands up in the air.

After a moment, Amy snapped her fingers.

AMY: “I got it!”
She knelt down to where the water was spewing from and began to move some of the rocks out of place, releasing more water from behind the wall.
AMY: “Sonic, help me move these rocks.”

SONIC: “AMY! Are you INSANE! What are you trying to do?! Drown us FASTER!”
He exclaimed.

AMY: “Trust me, it’s the only way to get us out of this alive.”

Sonic hesitated but decided to put his trust in Amy’s plan. He didn’t have much choice. He began to help her move rocks.

SONIC: “Okay, so what exactly is your plan here?”
He asked as he moved a large stone.

AMY: “To create a build-up of pressure. If this space fills up with enough water, it should burst us out of here.”

SONIC: “WHAT?! FILL UP WITH WATER?!”

AMY: “Yes!”
She hushed him in a harsh whisper.
AMY: “But we have to move fast! If the water flow isn’t strong enough, then it won’t be able to break the wall.”

Sonic would have argued further with her crazy plan, but they had no time to waste.

SONIC: “You better be right.”
He said with a gruff.

Now the water was waist high and bursting in a huge stream.

SONIC: “Okay, now what?”
He asked, trying to stay calm.

AMY: “Hold on to me.”
She instructed.

SONIC: “What? No. That’s weird.”
A light blush was barely visible on his face.

AMY: “You can’t swim, can you?”

SONIC: “Well- no.”

AMY: “Just hang on.”
She said, taking a hold of his arms.

The water level grew to their shoulders.

SONIC: “A-Amy! The water! We’re going to drown!”
His eyes were wide with panic.

AMY: “We will drown if you keep panicking!”
She breathed a sigh, knowing this was not the best way to treat his fears.
AMY: “Calm down. I’ve got you.”

Sonic looked at her desperately as the floor beneath their feet began to give out. He clung to Amy for dear life. Amy was just able to keep them both afloat. Soon, the water reached the roof of the cave.

AMY: “Deep breath.”
She instructed quickly.

They gasp for their last breath of air before the water engulfs them.

Under the water, their suits illuminate in the dark depths. They both had their eyes closed with bubbles in their cheeks.

Amy was the first to open her eyes. Sonic was hesitant, but slowly opened his eyes. He had already sunken like a stone to the bottom of the cave and struggled to swim. Amy dived down, took a hold of his arm, then guided him to the wall that had caved them in. She motioned to him to help her push the rocks. Sonic nodded and they both push the wall. The rocks shift a bit.

On the other side of the wall, all of the water came busting out in a huge stream.

Ext. Outside the Caverns - DAY

We tune back to Tails, Sticks, and Knuckles, who are all still looking for another way into the cave from the outside. So far, they had no luck.

TAILS: “I hope Sonic and Amy are okay. It’s been over an hour already.”

KNUCKLES: “Yeah. And we still haven’t found another way into the cave.”

STICKS: “Wait!”
She stopped and narrowed her eyes.
STICKS: “Something isn’t right.”
She looked from side-to-side.

TAILS: “What’s the matter Sticks?”

STICKS: “I don’t know… but my senses are telling me that they are approaching us really fast!”
Her eyes widened alert.

KNUCKLES: “Really? From where?”

Suddenly, the wall next to Knuckles burst open in a huge stream of water. As the water settled, Sonic and Amy are found soaked, gasping for air.

TAILS/STICKS: “Sonic! Amy!”

KNUCKLES: “Mommy?”
He face-planted into the grass.

Sonic and Amy looked at each other and laughed. They gave each other a celebratory hug, grateful to have made it out alive.

Fade out:

Notes:

This is one of my favorite stories! I really like Sonic and Amy's dialogue in this one UwU

Oh, and those notes Sonic almost torched earlier? Well, much to Amy’s dismay, her notes ended up getting ruined by the water. :(
One day she will look back on these memories and laugh… probably.
