Chapter Text
The matter of matrimony seems to be the topic of unnumbered dialogue these days, with all her companions being of suitable age to marry it only made sense. Tenten, however, hardly sees it fit to entertain such back-and-forths; pertaining to the handsomeness of the man, his riches or otherwise. But she cares a great deal for her friends so she diligently listens to their chatter.
“Have you not heard?” Ino inquisitions as she lays a delicate hand across her bosom. “Sasuke Uchiha has arrived in Konoha and rumour has it he’s seeking a wife.”
“Has he?” Sakura lifts her head from her book, authored by a philosopher no doubt but Tenten can’t quite discern a name from her position opposite the other girl, and regards Ino with wide eyes.
“I heard from Anko, who heard it from Karui,” Ino replies proudly.
“How do you know he wishes to marry?”
“Tenten, why else would a man as rich as he return home?” Ino raises an eyebrow at her. She must have visited a beauty parlour recently because it appears to be newly trimmed. Tenten does not think that Ino needs the services of a beauty parlour as she is already the fairest out of the lot ━ perhaps even the fairest in town, but she shall not deny her friend her mirth.
“Perhaps he misses home,” Tenten intones, bemused.
“I can not agree,” Sakura says, closing her book and placing it carefully on the table beside her. Her eyes meet Tenten’s briefly as she rakes her gaze around the room. They are gathered in the late Mrs Yamanaka’s parlour, as they always do when chores and studies have been tended to.
It is a rather lovely sitting area, with a fireplace and several plush-looking couches. A few potted plants stand near the window, providing some relief from the heat of the afternoon sun. There are two armchairs set close together on opposite ends of the room. The rest of the space is filled with bookshelves, stacked with old scrolls of literature which seem to be in disarray due to years of lack of use.
Tenten hums, “Why not?” It feels wrong to assume someone else’s motives but they probably know better than her. She was never one for such matters in her younger days but she is of marriageable age and therefore she ought to know such things if she ever hopes of finding a suitable husband. It is not a personal desire of hers but it is expected of her, and Tenten does so hate disappointing others.
“A man with his wealth has no doubt seen the world, Konoha must be mediocre to him,” Sakura replies primly. She crosses her legs and looks about. “I wonder if he will host a ball to meet eligible ladies."
"I hear he came with a distant cousin and one, Mr Naruto Uzumaki," Ino adds before taking a sip of tea.
“Naruto is coming?" Sakura frowns, eliciting a laugh from Tenten.
"Perhaps he's come to write you sweet prose of his burning love for you," she chaffs. "My brother will be greatly distressed that someone has come to steal away our precious blossom."
“Oh I am certain,” says Sakura unimpressed. Tenten’s younger brother, not by blood but seeing as they had both been fostered by the lionised Might Gai she regards him as a beloved sibling (their not being of the same blood did not exempt them from petty sibling rivalries though), had taken quite a liking to Sakura throughout his visits to Konoha with the Militia. A liking, as far as Tenten knew, that is unrequited.
“Anyhow, I fail to see why you need to know if he will be hosting any balls because I will be the one who will wed Sasuke.” Ino sits forward, her tone daring as she looks between Sakura and Tenten as if willing them to challenge her. Only Tenten does not care much, even though she must admit the reputation of Sasuke Uchiha’s pleasing appearance does pique her interest, she does not think herself handsome enough to contest that. Especially with Ino as an opponent.
“Be careful not to find yourself so deluded you make a fool of yourself in front of him,” Sakura jeers but the offence is lost to them as they both erupt into a peal of hearty laughter. Tenten sighs as she watches her friends, a foolish duo, but their laughter is contagious and Tenten loves to laugh.
“Will you attend, Tenten?” Sakura asks as the din dies down.
“Hm?”
“The ball.”
“I can not confirm my attendance of a ball that may very well not exist.”
“Perhaps you can find a husband that can outrun you on horseback?” Ino suggests humorously. Tenten laughs, she is quite the formidable horseback rider which apparently makes her an undesirable life partner but she fails to see why that should be a factor at all. “Or perhaps one who is a better swordsman or archer?”
The girls laugh, for there is very little hope that such a man exists that won’t be threatened by her skill. “Only if Sakura can find a husband with a more keen intellect,” Tenten remarks amid the laughter. “I fear that Ino is the only one of us that shall be wed. Sakura and I will have to be content living as old maids.”
“Nonsense,” Ino waves a dismissive hand, “You’re very handsome, even Sakura. I hear Naruto has become quite accomplished.”
“An accomplished fool is still a fool.”
“One can’t argue with that,” Tenten agrees.
“Very well then. It is rumoured that if Sasuke is to host a ball, the Hyuga family may be in attendance and Lord Hiashi is said to have a striking nephew.”
“The Hyuga?” Tenten stares at Ino quizzically. She has heard a great deal from her brother and father about their skill in combat, but not much else though. They are said to be quite the spectacle on the battlefield, no Hyuga having a lower rank than Brigadier General.
“They are practically royalty,” Ino supplies. “Handsome, wealthy, of both keen intellect and virtue. Very distantly related to the Uchiha but it may be reason enough for them to present themselves. Pray tell Tenten, have you any interest in them?
“Only a little,” she admits, resting her chin on the palm of her hand. “They own the estate on which I live.”
“That is hardly surprising since they own half of Konoha.”
“Really?”
“It is impressive, is it not?”
Tenten nods her assent. “They’re probably snobs, the lot of them.”
“You’re far too harsh, Tenten. Still, I think you are correct in your assumptions. My family has hosted countless balls and extended invitations to them every time but we have never seen a hyde or head of a Hyuga on these grounds. We Yamanaka may not have the same prestige as the Uchiha but we are not common folk.” Ino frowns, and Tenten decides that she does not like the Hyuga very much. It is bold to draw conclusions about someone before one has met them but Tenten is nothing if not bold.
“Has Lord Hiashi any daughters or nieces? Perhaps making acquaintance with one of them can land you an audience with his nephew, even a dance if you are lucky,” Sakura interjects, grinning.
“You misunderstand,” replies Tenten. “I have no interest in marrying one, it is merely curiosity.”
“But surely if an offer were to be made, you would accept?”
“I do not think so highly of myself, Sakura. However, it would be a most advantageous marriage, especially for my father and Lee, so I may be obliged to accept.”

Chapter Text
Sasuke does not have a ball, much to the dismay of both her friends. Naruto does, however, and Sasuke is confirmed (Ino heard from Shiho, who heard from Anko, who heard from one of the servants on her estate) to be in attendance.
Naruto is an adequate host, Tenten decides as she steps onto his newly acquired acreage with Lee at her side. The foyer is grand, all marble and gilded mirrors, decorated with the largest chandelier Tenten has ever seen, and with beautiful artwork hanging from the walls, each more elaborate than the last.
The ballroom is larger yet, with rows upon rows of tables set out for seating and several large, circular dance floors arranged in perfect symmetry around the perimeter of the room. The air in the space is thick and warm, and music fills the space along with chatter.
“It's a pity Papa could not make it," Tenten comments as she surveys the place, noting all the familiar faces. At least she would not be lonely.
"He is to return to the garrison this evening and I am to return by morning. I shall regale the youthful events of tonight upon my arrival."
“Do what you must, brother,” Tenten lilts absently. Sakura and Ino stand near the stairwell, garmented in soft-coloured gowns and waving their fans coquettishly. Ino notes her arrival first and crosses the distance to greet the pair, Sakura follows belatedly.
“Sakura,” Lee exclaims beside her, bowing his head as the women approach. “I am bewitched by your charm. Will you honour me with your hand for a quadrille?”
Tenten hears Sakura sigh as she takes the hand offered by Lee. “Lee, do not be too spirited with our dear Sakura. Lead her gently,” Tenten calls after the departing two.
“Your brother sure is a hasty fellow,” Ino observes.
“Indeed he is. You should have seen him when Papa had taught him how to shoot,” Tenten replies, then with an air of pridefulness adds, “He has yet to surpass my skill, you know.”
“If you can shoot, what need is there for a husband?”
“None. I crave only the status of a married woman, society is far too unkind to spinsters.”
“I could not agree more. Let us go and hope we have an offer to dance. Not all of us have the privilege of someone being so bewitched by us as Lee is with Sakura."
“You may well have the most handsome man in Konoha in the palm of your hand, Ino. Do not be so hard on yourself,” Tenten teases playfully. Ino shoots her a sharp look before grabbing her by the arm.
"You will come to our table if you have no better offers?"
"Of course. Your family has always been dear to me," Tenten responds earnestly. They walk down a winding path through a sea of guests, each one greeting them with a warm smile and polite bow, before entering the ballroom proper. The room is filled with people, some of whom she recognizes from earlier events; those that are not, she does not see. She looks about until she spies Lee and Sakura dancing close together, Sakura smiling shyly at the taller man, and Lee smiling back with such open affection it almost seems as though he might burst. Her heart aches a little watching Lee, and she finds herself envying Sakura’s easy acceptance of such adoration. She pities him, for loving so much but receiving so little in return but she can not loathe Sakura for it as the heart is something not everyone so readily gives away. In her mind, she thinks she knows the feeling; love is like water – the more you drink, the deeper and stronger the thirst grows.
They weave their way towards the refreshments table, and as they pass, Tenten can feel Ino’s eyes burning into her neck. Tenten turns, meeting her friend's gaze and sees the subtle twitch of her lips. Tenten frowns in confusion and Ino’s expression becomes sly. "It seems Lady Hinata Hyuga and her cousin is present." Tenten glances behind Ino, following the direction she points in, and sure enough, there she is. Hinata Hyuga, looking resplendent in pale pink silk and wearing silver hairpins. Behind her stands, a man, tall and imposing in manner, dressed in black with a single blue sash slung over his shoulder. Her cousin.
Tenten cannot help but notice how similar they appear, both of them standing tall, elegant in bearing, even with their attire so different. He is a striking presence, she will admit to herself; while he has a stern expression, Hinata’s is soft, her face a delicate shade of rose.
Hinata catches sight of their approaching footsteps and her face lightens considerably at the sight of them. Hinata bows quickly and Tenten curtseys politely. "We have come to introduce ourselves," Ino says. "Lady Hinata, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ino Yamanaka." She curtseys. "This here is my friend, Tenten."
"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance," Hinata replies politely. “It appears you already know me, so let me introduce my cousin, Neji.” Both girls regard him with a polite bow, which he reciprocates wordlessly.
"It seems you are without a partner as well," Ino begins, "Perhaps your cousin has already selected someone for you." Hinata blinks and her cheeks flush in embarrassment. "I would rather someone approach me.”
She is unlike what Tenten had expected; she appears timid, demure, rather than snobbish or stuck up. Yet, Tenten thinks, she is nothing short of beautiful. "If you have no partner, then may we join you? We would love to get acquainted." Ino offers the woman a charming grin.
"Yes," Hinata agrees quietly. "I suppose we may do so." Her consent aggravates her cousin, or at least Tenten thinks it does. She is quite a good judge of character, even with his stoic expression.
“I apologise, good sir, does our presence bother you?” His pearlescent eyes meet hers, very briefly but they do meet. They’re cold and unkind, exactly like Tenten had pictured. At least one of them lives up to her expectations.
“I can not undo the consent my cousin has already bestowed on you.”
"That is true. Nevertheless, I apologise for any discomfort we cause."
"Cousin, it would do you a great deal of good to watch your mouth, lest you lose it permanently," Hinata reprimands gently, shooting a concerned glance towards her cousin. "Please forgive my cousin's insolence."
Neji's expression remains impassive. "Forgive me, Lady Hinata." His tone lacks emotion entirely, completely devoid of any emotion except apathy.
“May we steal Hinata away so as to not inconvenience you?” Ino beseeches.
“I am afraid I can not allow that.”
“Very well then.” Ino turns to face Hinata. “What brings you here this evening? I know not the Hyuga to attend balls that are not their own. I should know as I have sent many an invitation in the past but to no avail.”
“Ino,” Tenten berates. “You are far too straightforward.”
“Were you also not straightforward in asking me whether I was displeased with you?” asks Neji.
"I merely sought to ascertain the situation myself as your behaviour is beyond reproach,” Tenten defends herself smoothly, “and I did not expect your answer to confirm my suspicions." She ignores Ino’s mirthful cackling beside her. So much for either of them marrying into prestige, they shall be scorned in the eyes of the Hyuga forever. And it is such a pity for Hinata is so very sweet. But then again perhaps Neji will prove a poor husband with an attitude like that.
“My apologies, Lady Hinata, if we offend, it was not our intention,” Tenten apologises sincerely.
“Not at all. I must apologise once more for my cousin's behaviour. He is usually better behaved."
“Do not concern yourselves with my affairs, cousin. You have done me ample courtesy this night. If you would excuse me," Neji says, turning and sweeping out of the hall without a second glance.
"That was certainly a spectacle to behold," Ino whistles. "Tenten, you must have given the poor man a fright."
"Hardly. He has never seemed to fear anything. It was hardly the first time. I do think you might find himself a bit disheartened by the prospect of losing this verbal match, but I cannot say I share his pessimism. As much as I dislike his bluntness, I know he is kind and caring beneath that exterior. He may possess an unyielding nature, but it will take time for that to melt away.” Hinata smiles softly, and Tenten feels herself growing fond of her. She wishes to keep Hinata as a friend.
"Lady Hinata," Ino calls her attention once more, "perhaps we ought to find you a partner to dance with. Seeing as it is your first ball away from home, it only seems fitting that you dance this evening."
"Ah yes,” Tenten agrees easily.
"But," Hinata pauses, as though struggling to find her words. "Is it not true that if no one has approached me yet, I am seen as an unfit dance partner?"
Ino is struck silent for a moment, wondering where Hinata has picked up the idea. “The reason why no one approaches you tonight is that they all fear you,” she states matter-of-factly. “A common misconception regarding your birthright.” She hesitates a moment, wondering if her assumption would sound insensitive. "You are a Hyuga after all; a noble lineage. A girl like yourself deserves more respect than just being danced at a social gathering."
"I see," Hinata says softly, her brow furrowed in contemplation.
"Come," Ino takes her hand and leads them to the dancefloor. "I will find you a partner before the night is over."
Chapter Text
“Oh, Naruto you must dance with Lady Hinata,” Ino implores, clutching her hands before her bosom. “She is a Hyuga and it would be most unfavourable to you if she does not enjoy her night. You are the host and it is proper etiquette.”
“Miss Ino, I am saving the next dance for Sakura. She has danced only with Rock Lee as of now, you know,” Naruto answers, sweeping his gaze over to where Rock Lee stands, chattering rather animatedly to a tired-looking Sakura. He is not keen on dancing with a relative of Neji Hyuga, especially if she is anything like him. The Hyuga family is far too complicated.
“Sakura has already promised the next dance to someone else, did you not see? I looked on with great interest and envy as Sasuke Uchiha approached her. Better luck for the dance thereafter.”
Naruto’s eyes narrow as he watches the blonde maiden before him. “Fine. But on one condition, my friend Sai is without a partner too. He is a rather difficult fellow, with no experience in dance at all. You will dance with him then.”
Ino grins. “That is of no hindrance to me at all. I was starting to feel embarrassed that there hasn’t been an offer for my hand.”
“Gentlemen are scarce tonight, aren’t they?” Naruto mutters as Ino leads him away to where a Lady Hinata awaits. He has heard of the Hyuga clan but he does not know much, so he has no way of discerning her handsomeness. He fears, that if she has not gotten an offer yet she may not be very handsome or she may have a very brash personality. Like Miss Tenten. He sees the brunette come into view and audibly gulps.
He bows and looks over at the woman standing next to her. He can only assume she is the lady Ino had meant for him to dance with. She is beautiful, easily the most beautiful lady in the room.
“Naruto,” Tenten curtseys.
“This is Lady Hinata,” Ino says, waving her hand in the direction of the beautiful woman. “Lady Hinata, I’d like for you to meet Naruto.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, sir.” Her voice is delicate and melodic, with a refined air. Much unlike her cousin. “The pleasure is all mine. May I have the next dance?”
The woman’s face colours. “Of course.” Her gloved hand slips into his easily, and he leads her away from her two companions.
Tenten turns to Ino with a huff as soon as the two are far away enough. “You organised a dance for her with Naruto ? Really Ino, I thought you less desperate than that.”
“The only other free gentlemen are her cousin, your brother and another man who Naruto has made me agree to dance with. Apparently, he is inexperienced and would have been a horrid partner. I think he goes by the name Sai.”
“You have agreed to dance with someone?”
“I have. I am not sure of his family name but I assume it does not matter. It is only one dance.”
“Which means I am the only one without a partner tonight,” Tenten frowns. She is rather fond of dances so it is a shame. “I shall find Lee, then.”
“I must apologise for leaving you behind, Tenten.”
“What does it matter? As you said, there is only one gentleman aside from my brother and he is quite horrid.”
“But he is handsome,” Ino says.
“Being handsome is not enough.”
“I agree. It would take a lot to woo you. Sakura is the same.”
Tenten is about to reply when a tall man approaches them. Sai, she presumes. She sighs as she watches him offer Ino a hand without sparing her so much as a glance. Men these days had no manners at all. She waves as Ino passes and once the blonde woman is gone, she scours the room for her brother. He is without a partner too, at least to her knowledge.
“Lee,” she says once she finds him, standing adjacent to the refreshments table. “How are you liking the party thus far?”
“Oh, Tenten. Sakura is so lovely, her loveliness has made tonight a joyous one. I shall miss her dearly when I am away,” he keens.
“Well, I am glad you are enjoying yourself.”
“Are you not?”
“I can’t say that I am.”
“Then, my fair sister, dance with me?” He extends his hand and she takes it, as she does on many other nights like this one. It’s quite a miserable fate actually, for even though she does not think herself as handsome as Ino, she is not ugly. Perhaps a bit plain, but definitely not ugly. So she dances with her brother and she laughs, Lee is energetic even though he has been on his feet all evening. She laughs with every twirl and dip, and when she feels the scrutiny of one Neji Hyuga, she laughs even harder.
She and Lee retire to their table once the dance is over, which so happens to be right across from where Hinata and her cousin sit with Naruto and the man from earlier who had come to fetch Ino. Sai, she reminds herself. It is shocking because she did not think they were acquainted. They are close enough for her to hear their chatter, so even though she does not mean to eavesdrop, it can not be helped what she hears.
“Neji, I hear you have not danced at all this evening,” Naruto drawls, smiling smugly. “You must tell us if any eligible ladies wish to dance with you.”
“I assure you, Naruto, I am happy with the company I currently have. Thank you very much,” the pale man replies evenly.
"Hinata," Naruto turns to the woman in disbelief. Tenten is surprised at the casual way he speaks to her, she is sure they only met today. Even if Naruto knew Neji, he has no way of knowing Hinata so personally. Their dance must have gone well. "Did he converse with a lady at all?"
"Well," starts Hinata tentatively. "Aside from with me, he spoke with a Miss Ino and Miss Tenten." Tenten frowns at the mention of her name.
"Oh yes, Ino who danced with Sai over here. And Tenten? It's a good thing you did not dance with her then. She is quite ferocious." Oh, she ought to give Naruto a good lashing when she sees him again. What kind of person calls her ferocious?
"I could tell," responds Neji.
"But she is handsome," Naruto continues.
"Handsome," Neji appears to agree and Tenten feels herself grow warmer. "But not so handsome to tempt me."
"Ah," Naruto seems rather taken aback at this comment. Tenten scowls. Neji Hyuga is not so great to say such things about her. Not unless he wishes to court trouble, that is.

another chapter so soon!! this is really just so fun to write. if there are any pride and prejudice fans here, think you can tell that i modelled neji mostly after mr darcy. that's why i used one of his lines straight from the book here.
Chapter Text
When Tenten and Sakura were alone, the former of which had been cautious in her praise of Sasuke up until now had expressed her liking with feverish intensity.
"Oh, Tenten he is everything a man ought to be. A warrior of great skill and bravery. He has an honourable bearing, a noble soul, and I've heard rumours that he makes ten thousand a year. I do not mean to sound so shallow but his riches are a convenient addition." Her tone was soft and earnest. Tenten could practically feel the sincerity radiating off the girl. "He is not very talkative so at first I thought him indifferent or perhaps even averse towards me. But then he asked for a second dance, and who am I to say no to an Uchiha? I was very flattered that I could afford such a compliment."
"How could you think him indifferent? You are rather easy to love since you are so pretty,” she says as she wraps an arm around the other woman's shoulders.
"It is a shame Neji was not more agreeable," Sakura sighs before pulling herself out of Tenten's embrace.
"Oh, please a man like him does not deserve our attention. He is far too discourteous."
"Indeed, the entire town is talking about it. They think him a cold-hearted bastard.”
"Such foul language from our precious blossom?" Tenten teases, nudging her friend playfully.
"It is what he deserves for speaking so ill of you."
"I must agree. Although, I do hope he does not seek out my place of residence and banish me from it. It is his family's land after all."
"Oh! Do you really think he would be so cruel?"
"I think he is capable of many things, cruelty is not exempt. Well, in any case, if he tries anything on my behalf, I'll have some words for him!" Tenten smiles indulgently at her companion.
"I am sure you will give him a good whacking. You are Might Gai's daughter after all."
"That I am," Tenten answers proudly.
The two walk along, chatting idly for hours about inconsequential matters until there is a shrill cry of their names in the distance. Both turn, spotting Ino bounding toward them, her hair wild from wind and sweat. Tenten waves cheerily as the young blonde approaches. Ino comes to a stop just short of where they stand, panting hard.
"Why on earth were you running?" Sakura asks when Ino has caught her breath enough to speak coherently.
"I met Naruto by the town square and he had a message from Lady Hinata for Tenten and me. Oh good heavens, Tenten how do you manage running so much every day? My legs feel as though they are about to convulse."
Ino collapses next to Tenten, throwing an arm over her eyes, her body still trembling in exertion. Tenten grins down at her, enjoying the flush colouring Ino's cheeks.
"Well, it seems as if someone is in dire need of some tea and rest," Sakura remarks. "I must say Ino I am very surprised at you for such unladylike behaviour."
"It is an urgent matter, I had to make haste. Hinata requests our presence at the Hyuga manor. It seems we had made quite the impression on her, so she has invited us to dine with her. Sakura you are welcome to join, I am sure she will not mind. Hinata is a kind soul." Tenten looks pensive for a moment. "I hardly think it wise to go, but I would hate to disappoint her."
"Do come!" Ino entreats. She pulls herself up so she can look Tenten in the eye, her face suddenly filled with determination. "Please, if you do not come with us Hinata will be most hurt."
"Very well," Tenten sighs resignedly. Ino throws her arms around Tenten, hugging her tightly. The former laughs weakly while patting her back. "Thank you, Tenten. Thank you," Ino exclaims happily.
"You will be able to join us, Sakura?" Tenten inquires.
"I would have to ask my mother's permission but I doubt she will agree. I have history lessons tomorrow and piano the following day."
"You are not afraid to miss one afternoon? It cannot be as bad as all that."
"She might actually kick me out if I miss any lesson."
"Oh, dear. Well, I suppose we will have to go without you. It is such a pity," Ino pouts in distress. She turns to Sakura imploringly. "Would your mother not understand if you told her who it is we are visiting?"
"She would not care if the queen herself were to summon me."
"There is nothing that can be done then." Tenten shrugs dejectedly.
"Do not be so sad on my behalf. I shall see you soon enough." Sakura puts a comforting hand on her shoulder. "I would much rather attend to mine studies than attend a dinner. Pray, do enjoy yourselves!"
“We shall take the carriage my father has left me,” Tenten tells Ino as they walk.
“Oh! Do you mind if we depart from my home? You may borrow one of my gowns for the occasion.”
“Not at all. I will send word to Hinata to expect us in the morning.”
Chapter Text
The Hyuga manor is grander than Tenten had envisaged, with tall columns and ornamental fountains. The gates themselves are made from iron lattice, set into high stone walls and flanked by two large pillars inlaid with golden cogs. They walk around until they reach the massive main doors; the handles are carved with intricate patterns of intertwined roses and thistles that look almost real enough to touch. When they open the sound of a bell rings out and they're welcomed by servants who lead them into the building's interior. The halls are lined with marble flooring and tapestries hung on each wall, and their feet echo loudly as they go deeper and deeper within the estate. Eventually, they come to a halt outside an elaborately carved wooden door, guarded by two armed guards whose faces are hidden behind visors of black leather. She turns to Ino, apprehensive.
"This place is far too grand for me I am but a plain maiden, why must we be so honoured?" Ino laughs. "You needn't be afraid, I can assure you there won't be any trouble here. We are both acquainted with Lady Hinata, are we not?"
"Indeed we are but I am more concerned that her cousin shall be present," Tenten confesses.
"My dear Tenten, you are not afraid of him, are you? That is most unlike you."
"I do not fear him in the way you suggest," she replies, "but I would prefer not to see him." The door opens before Ino has the opportunity to reply. "Lady Hinata will see you now," says one of the guards, stepping aside so that Tenten and Ino may enter the room. Hinata stands at the head of the table, dressed entirely in white. Her face, when she catches sight of them, looks surprised and happy.
"Welcome ladies," she gushes, "Please have a seat! I am glad to see you've made it safely!" Tenten sits next to Hinata, Ino taking the other end of the table across from her. "Thank you for having us."
"Well now that you're here, how does the weather treat your travels?" Hinata asks.
"It was quite lovely today," Ino replies. "We travelled through the countryside along the banks of the rivers which ran alongside the roads."
“That does sound lovely. I must confess that I have an ulterior motive for bringing you here,”
Tenten shifts in her seat uncomfortably. "Oh?"
"Your company is most enjoyable, however, I do hope we can meet on better terms after I ask this favour of you." Tenten glances sideways at Ino who looks mildly bedevilled. "Of course," she agrees slowly, "whatever you wish of us."
"Good, well then. This evening, Lord Neji will be joining us at dinner. He will endeavour to make things pleasant between us, so I implore that you keep your conversation civil. Miss Tenten, I suspect he may already have expressed his intentions towards you," Hinata pauses, as though trying to gauge Tenten's reaction. Tenten's face remains impassive, however, despite her mind imagining whatever cruel fate that is about to be bestowed on her. "But upon my request, he will propose to you tonight." She gapes. She thought something akin to exile or perhaps even beheading, somehow a proposal feels far worse. Opposite her, Ino squeals in delight. "Oh, Tenten," the blonde croons. "Who would have thought! You, engaged? And before Sakura and myself!"
"I am afraid I do not understand," says Tenten, attempting to conceal her distress with repose. “What do you mean upon your request? Your cousin does not tolerate me, with all due respect, why on earth would you make such a heinous request?”
“Please, give me a chance to explain myself,” Hinata importunes, brow knit. “I did not mean to cause you any distress but this is a matter of urgency. Our family does not allow an unmarried heir to inherit. He needs to marry lest he forfeits the title to another. We stand to lose everything.”
Tenten shakes her head disbelievingly, "And yet you expect me to accept this arrangement without any objections? Are there no eligible ladies willing to tolerate him?"
" He will not tolerate them. I would not have asked you if we were not desperate. It is imperative that you take him, if only for one year.”
“I must refuse. I am the last woman on earth he could ever hope to marry. Find yourself another poor fool,” Tenten replies. “I shall leave immediately.” She rises to her feet and bows stiffly, moving hastily to the door.
"Tenten wait," Ino cries, leaping up to follow. "Think wisely about this, you said such a marriage would be most advantageous to your family before."
"That was before I knew the Lord of the house was such a pompous ass!" Tenten retorts hotly.
"I must agree that his attitude is most unfavourable, however, if he does not inherit it someone else does and who knows if they will allow your family to continue to take up residence on their property."
Tenten turns to look at Ino, eyes ablaze. "You marry him then," she snaps. Ino flinches and backs away. "Do not try and dissuade me."
"He has already agreed to wed you, has he not?" Ino says.
"He has," Hinata agrees, impetuous. "Mull it over before we dine, I promise you will be compensated well for this favour."
Tenten sighs. If she does not wed him, she puts her father and brother at risk of being without a home. She would be able to bear knowing she could have prevented it, especially after everything they had done for her. Life is so cruel to her, she thinks. “Alright,” she relents. “If it must happen.”
“Do not worry, you will only be married to the public eye and in front of the elders of our family. I shall arrange that you have separate rooms in the manor. You will be provided with every comfort and luxury our home has to offer."
"That is kind of you, thank you Lady Hinata," Tenten says, bowing. "If I may be excused I have much to consider. I will see you at dinner." With that, she makes for the door. Ino moves to follow her. "What an odd turn of events," Ino says once they've reached the courtyard.
"That is certainly one way to put it. I can scarcely believe it either."
"I never dreamed someone so close to me would marry into the Hyuga family, it is too surreal."
Tenten frowns. "You are a tad too happy for my liking."
"Of course I am. One of my oldest friends is about to be wed. Fake or not, we shall treat your wedding like the finest of occasions. You heard Lady Hinata, you will not even have to see him aside from when you are in public. Once all is done and he has inherited their fortune, I am sure they will have no arguments if you divorce, after all, it is a sham marriage."
"I suppose you are right. Still, I wonder what made him agree to a marriage with me. A week ago I was not handsome enough to tempt him." Tenten lets out a bitter laugh. "The hilarity is beyond me."
“Perhaps he had a change of heart?” Ino suggests, shrugging.
“I doubt it.”

Chapter Text
Neji is sat opposite Tenten, as proper husbandly (or future husbandly) etiquette demands he be. He looks at her with the same distasteful look he had only a few days prior, and she thinks — nay, she knows they would never sell a convincing tale. At the very least, the food is good and Hinata (and her younger sister, Hanabi, who Tenten has only just become acquainted with) is good company. Ino is chatty, as usual, keeping the attention off Tenten. She is honestly a saving grace, despite it all. Lord Hiashi, the current head of the Hyuga house, sits at the foot of the table and it becomes painfully apparent that Hinata is the outlier of the family. His gaze is stern, like Neji’s, his mouth set in a near-permanent frown.
“Miss Tenten, is it?” Lord Hiashi asks.
“It is.”
“I hear you met my daughter and nephew at the Uzumaki ball. It seems you have made quite the impression.” His eyes move to Neji first, then to Hinata. “You are Might Gai’s ward?”
“I am.”
“Speak up, girl,” Lord Hiashi says sharply. Tenten frowns but abides. "Might Gai is my father," She sets her silverware down and sits straighter, "Though we are not related by blood, he has raised me since I was a baby."
"And you learned well with him?"
"Indeed, he taught me a great deal on many topics."
"I can not imagine what those topics may be, Gai is not known for his intellect as he is known for his skill," Hiashi says.
"Then it is good that he schooled me in skills." Tenten meets his gaze, unimpressed by the slight beneath his words. His jaw twitches but he continues, “I assume you were trained in music then? Perhaps art?"
"No, sir. I have never been trained in either but I am quite the skilled marksman."
"That is not very—"
"Fitting of a lady? I know." Beside her, Ino gives a wary cough.
“Cousin,” Hinata interjects before her father may continue, sparing Neji an assertive glance. “There was something you wanted to ask, remember?” Her tone is saccharine and her smile too bright.
Neji shifts uneasily in his seat, and it is some comfort to Tenten to know that he is as dismayed as she. “Right, yes,” He clears his throat once and begins speaking. “Uncle, I must inform you that I have decided to take a bride." A ripple runs through the room, Lord Hiashi's expression grows more sour.
“Have you?” The elder man asks. “May I ask who this lady is?”
“Miss Tenten ." Silence settles over them as the entire table waits expectantly for his next move. He stands, his spine ramrod straight, crossing the space that separates them. He stops short, right beside Tenten's chair. lowering himself to one knee. It is an odd sight. Tenten imagines that a proposal, especially from someone of his calibre, would be a happy affair. She has not witnessed any but it made sense that deciding to make such a commitment to someone you love dearly should be joyous. It is odd because he does not look the least bit happy, but then again he does not love her dearly. "It would please me greatly if you would consent to marry me. I will spend my life serving and protecting you, so long as your wishes do not conflict with mine. " It is a heartless proposal but she is inclined to accept, if only for the sake of her family. She supposes it is best for at least one of them to feign excitement, so she smiles bright and allows him to take her hand. “I would be honoured to be your bride.”
"I pledge myself to you, Tenten." His lips brush her knuckles and she resists the urge to recoil in disgust. Instead, she keeps her face neutral, though his touch burns into her skin. "And I to you, Neji.”
“Nephew,” Hiashi starts, his displeasure clear in his voice, but Neji raises a hand, stopping his uncle mid objection. Tenten watches in fascination as Neji stands and bows before her, his head bowed low enough for his nose to almost touch her lap. He raises his head and their gazes meet, and she has to resist the impulse to look away. “I will wed Tenten and no other.” Though his words sound profound and romantic, he says them coldly.
“You will wed her despite her inferior birth?” Tenten hears Lord Hiashi scoff in disdain. "She would never bring honour to our house!”
“I marry for love, as my father did,” Neji replies. Oh, the irony. Hiashi schools his expression and sighs. "Very well, if it is what you wish." That had been surprisingly easy, Tenten notes. Perhaps there is someone Hiashi feels strongly enough for. Feeling exempt from anger and disgust, that is.
"It is," Neji answers, unperturbed.
"Then I shall not stop you.” There is an air of finality in Hiashi's voice, an implied end to the conversation. He seems as unhappy as she feels.
“We can discuss arrangements for the wedding once I return from the trip I depart for tomorrow,” Neji says, returning to his seat.
“Tenten, Ino,” Hinata turns to them excitably. “Will you spend the night?”
Tenten shakes her head in refusal but Ino says, “We would love to. It is quite far to travel so late, anyhow.” She is clearly enjoying this. What is not to enjoy when you are not the one entering a sham marriage to protect a pompous heir’s inheritance, after all?
“Then I shall ask the servants to prepare your rooms.”
“Thank you kindly,” Ino responds. She turns to Tenten with a grin and says in a whispered tone. “A night in the Hyuga manor, have you ever deigned to imagine?”
“Honestly, I can not say I have,” Tenten whispers back.
“You were never the imaginative sort,” Ino waves a dismissive hand. “Sakura is going to be so fraught with jealousy. I can not wait to relay everything to her.”
“Telling Sakura is the least of my concerns. How could I ever express these events to Lee or my father?” Tenten pauses. “We have yet to ask for my father’s blessing what if he refuses? This is a terrible idea, even more so now that I have realised that it was not thought out so thoroughly.”
“You can discuss that with Hinata after dinner, let us return to our meals in silence so that people do not suspect us of being ill-mannered.” Ino laughs softly to herself. “One of us at least, I am afraid it is too late for you.”
Chapter Text
If Tenten were to vocalise the largeness of the room Hinata has presented her with, she is certain any ordinary person would have had hysterics (and Tenten is no stranger to luxury, or at least luxury to an extent because this borders something beyond that). It is not as though she has grown up a pauper, Gai is rather well-off despite his social standing, well-off enough to keep a cook and maid but that was just about the magnitude of his wealth. So when Tenten says this room is lavish beyond measure, well, she means it. The ceiling is high above her head, there are intricate designs inlaid on every surface, and what could be the most ostentatious furnishings are scattered about.
"I hope this room is to your liking," Hinata says, stepping through the doorway. "I had it prepared in advance on the assumption that today would go well."
"Well, you assumed correct then," Tenten replied. She watches Hinata for a moment, wondering if she can glean anything from the way the other woman carries herself. "However, it is curious that you did not inform your father of your schemes. I can not say I was not insulted by him but he conceded rather quickly." Hinata's face colours. "Oh, I must apologise for earlier. My father is traditionalistic, though that is no excuse. We had initially planned on informing him of our strategy but I know he would never approve."
"No excuse is warranted Lady Hinata," Tenten waves dispassionately. "I was just curious. If you do not mind my asking, what is his relationship with Lord Neji's father?”
Hinata smiles, her expression softening considerably. “They are brothers. Twin brothers.” She falters. “Well, I suppose I should say were. Neji's father passed on many years ago.”
“I see.” Tenten nods slowly before continuing. "So how do you and Lord Neji propose we go about this sham marriage?"
Hinata laughs softly. "Let us begin with not calling it a sham marriage around other people. In fact, aside from you, Neji, Ino and myself I would rather no one else know. If word got out and your marriage is annulled before Neji is twenty-one, it would ruin everything." She pauses thoughtfully. "Shall I send a summons to your father and brother so that we may acquire your father's blessing?"
"You may but," Tenten strides across the room to take a seat on the bed. "He will not give it so easily."
"What do you propose we do then?"
"My father cares for my brother and me greatly, he would only consent to a union if he knew it would make us happy.”
"Perhaps that is a matter for you and my cousin to discuss alone?"
Tenten sighs. "Perhaps it is. When is the soonest I can request an audience with him?"
“He departs tomorrow so tonight is preferred. Shall I ask a servant to fetch him?”
“That will not be necessary I am perfectly capable of walking to wherever he is myself.”
Hinata nods. “Very well. You will find him in his study, just down the hall.”
Tenten bows deeply before exiting the room. Her steps are slow and measured, her gait purposeful. A deep frown settles over her brow as her eyes sweep along the corridor. She stops outside the door to the study and knocks. She hears a muffled sound of protest before the door swings open and there stands Neji, looking annoyed. Her mouth twitches as she regards him. "May I enter?"
Neji stares her down. His arms cross stubbornly over his chest. "It is unbecoming for a woman to enter a man's study unaccompanied." His tone is terse and his words sharp.
"I see no wrong in a lady coming to visit her betrothed," Tenten responds evenly. Her voice is light but there is a distinct bite to her words. "If you wish to continue glaring at me I would be glad to oblige."
There are several beats of silence before Neji finally relents, his shoulders dropping slightly. "You may enter." He steps back allowing Tenten to pass by him into the room before he follows closing the door behind them. "What is it you wish to speak of?"
"You have yet to ask my father for his blessing."
"And why should I bother? From what I hear he is not your real father, so I hardly see why his opinion would matter."
Tenten's lips twitch into a bitter smile. "He considers me a daughter. That is sufficient."
"Fine, I shall draft him a letter then." Neji crosses the room and grabs a quill off his desk.
"A letter would never suffice. I need something substantial. Something that will convince him that this is in his best interests as well as mine."
Neji scowls as his fingers hover over the paper before him. "I do not have time to entertain you and your peasant father. A letter is enough."
"Peasant father?" Tenten laughs. "As opposed to a dead one?"
Neji blinks and drops his hand, turning towards Tenten. "What do you know of my father?"
“I could ask you the same question.”
Neji snorts derisively. "This charade of a marriage shall not stand the test of time."
“In all honesty, I would prefer it not.” Tenten steps forward, her eyes narrowed menacingly. “I hope you did not think I would stay married to you for long.”
“It is an advantageous marriage to you, is it not? Let us not sit back and pretend you are not getting a hefty dowry and a multitude of other benefits.”
“I could care less for the money, I am only doing this for my family’s security. Do not for a moment think I would have agreed to marry you otherwise.” Her chest heaves against his, they are far too close for it to be deemed appropriate but Tenten’s face burns more from anger than shame. “Do not forget that you benefit from our union as well, so if you want me to go through with this marriage you will go see my father and do hope he makes you grovel for his blessing.” Gai is far too kindhearted to make anyone grovel but Neji does not know that.
“Get out of here,” Neji seethes, voice low.
“And why would I listen to you?” Tenten scoffs. “I will leave of my own accord.”
“You stubborn woman, I ought to put you in your place somehow.”
“Put me in my place? I will not be domesticated and certainly not by the likes of you, Neji Hyuga.”
A knock at the door pries them away from each other. Tenten steps back first, inclining her head towards the door. “Enter,” Neji calls as he moves to sit at his desk.
Hiashi enters the room, a slight grimace on his face. His gaze flicks between the two of them before settling on Tenten. “Am I interrupting something?"
"Not at all, I will be on my way now" Tenten replies. "Have a good evening, Lord Hiashi." Her eyes fall to Neji as she curtseys. "Good night, my love ."

Chapter Text
“Engaged?” bellows Sakura with wide eyes and a taut brow. “And to the same person, you cursed a day before?” Ino barks out a laugh. “The irony is so amusing but he romanced her during our stay. And our poor Tenten, she fell for it inelegantly.”
Tenten huffed. “Romanced is not the word I would use but yes, Neji and I are to be wed.”
“You can not be serious, Tenten. He offended you so blithely at Naruto’s ball. What on earth are you thinking?” Sakura gaped. “Has he blackmailed you? If he has, tell me immediately so that we can put a stop to whatever he has planned for you.”
“Blackmail? Oh heavens no, Sakura you should have seen them. We were gathered at the dinner table and he rose suddenly and strode over to where Tenten sat. I had a great view as I was next to her and he asked for her hand. He pledged himself to her, and she to him. He even stood up to that vile uncle of his, insisting that he wishes to marry for love.” Tenten suppresses an eye roll. Ino is a spectacular liar. She can twist any story to make it believable. Sakura, despite her sharp mind, is not exempt from those who fall for Ino's falsity.
“Is it true?” Sakura faces Tenten with large, benignant eyes.
“I fear that it is. It is a pity you could not come, you would have witnessed it yourself. I was quite surprised and even though I never wished to get married the way you and Ino have, I was swept off my feet.” Tenten is not as skilled a liar as Ino but Sakura accepts it.
“If he was so enamoured by you, well, enamoured enough to propose, why did he behave so untowardly a short time ago?”
“I must take responsibility for that evening, if I had not provoked him so rudely then perhaps he would not have treated me so.”
“Tenten, I am astounded by you. I know an admittance like that does not come easy.”
“I can confirm that it has not,” Tenten says.
“One could suppose that love has changed her.” Ino laughs lightly, bringing her teacup to her lips. “You know she is to visit again next week when he returns home.”
“Is he that eager to see her again? He did not seem the type to cling desperately to a lover.”
“No, it’s not that,” Tenten shifts to rest her chin on her palm, “We have wedding plans to discuss.”
“So soon?” Sakura places a hand on her chest. “My, my he is eager. I wish Sasuke was the same.”
“His loss then.” Ino scrunches her nose up in defiance. “Him and that pathetic cousin of his. He has not a fortune to his name, you know. And he had the audacity to decline my offer of a second dance. They may be related but he is not an Uchiha.”
“Perhaps he is of those that do not believe a lady is to ask for a dance,” Sakura hums. “A testament to his masculinity.”
“If we ever come across him again I shall challenge him to a duel and return with his head hanging off the end of my sword. I promise you,” Tenten grins.
“You are so gruesome, really, the perfect companion.” Ino cackles heartily. “If I ever see him again, though I doubt I will as Naruto has returned to the garrison, I shall send for you. Though, I fear you may be preoccupied with your married life by then.”
Tenten waves a dismissive hand. “He has not yet received my father’s permission. What if the engagement is called off?”
“Do you really think he would decline a Hyuga?”
“Papa does not care for titles and material wealth but he does care for skill and character. I am almost certain Neji has the skill but I doubt his character.”
“Tenten!” Ino chides. “You speak so ill of your affianced.”
“Regardless of who he is to me, he shan’t be spared from the truth.”
“Well, now you truly must visit us once you are married, Tenten. Please, let us hear all about the romantic adventures you shall have.” Sakura smiles. “It will take some getting used to though. You being married, that is. I really did think we would grow to be old maids together.”
“As did I,” replies Tenten earnestly. “This interferes with my plan as much as yours.”
Ino laughs. “Your plan? Do you mean the idea of spending your lives in solitude, pining away in one another’s embrace? I would hardly call that a plan. That seems terribly dull and rather mundane." She shrugs nonchalantly. "However, I must admit that you two living out your days bothering me seemed ideal. I will miss you greatly when you are away.”
“Oh, Ino.” Tenten smiles brightly. “I did not think you thought so highly of me.”
“Of course I did. You two are my oldest friends, I could not imagine a life without you. Though, I must say you will find your tenure at the Hyuga manor to be so splendid that I do not think you will miss us very much.”
“What spurred that on?” Tenten will never enjoy the Hyuga manor, she vows only to be miserable while she is there, for her situation is quite miserable.
“I toured the grounds of the place during our visit. They have everything you could ever desire. A stable, an armoury, a shooting range. Your days will never be dull. And your husband is quite handsome, is he not? The rumours suit him well.”
“Groom-to-be,” Tenten amends. “Regardless of how I occupy my time, I will spend a lot of it missing the two of you. You must come visit, will you promise me?” It is a little sad. Tenten thinks. She is leaving behind her family, her friends, her home and everything that is dear and familiar to her. And for what? To save a rich heir whose fortune is at risk. But also, she would be saving that is dear and familiar to her so what other choice did she have? She loses them both either way, but at the very least her father and Lee will still have it.
“I promise.” Ino’s tone is slightly solemn, not so much that it is obvious to anyone but Tenten and Sakura. “I can not say the same for Sakura, however. Sasuke Uchiha might steal her away.” She says this a bit lighter, still, there is an air of something Tenten has never seen gracing the blonde’s features.
“I honestly doubt he would. If Neji Hyuga could make quick work of it, Sasuke would have approached me already. These aristocratic men think the same, after all.”
“Perhaps he is shy? Or prefers more traditional courting methods that do not involve insulting the woman of your affections one evening and professing your undying love the next.”

Chapter Text
A letter from one’s betrothed ought to excite any recipient for it is their lover’s heart song. Tenten, however, is not excited and Neji Hyuga is certainly not her lover. Still, she clutches the letter close to her chest, not out of an overwhelming sense of elevation but out of fear that the Hyuga insignia may be seen by any of her acquaintances as she makes her way through town.
News of her betrothal has not yet made its rounds and she hopes to God it does not ever. It is a very unscrupulous union after all, and her reputation would see its ruination. The marriage itself is set to ruin the untouchable image she has so carefully curated for herself but some sacrifices have to be made. There is no point in crying over spilt milk.
She makes haste on her trek home, partially out of curiosity about the contents of the letter (it is perfectly normal for one to be curious about any letter they may receive) and partially because she really, really does not want to meet anyone along the way. Unless it is Ino and Sakura as there is no point in hiding things from them but they are both away so she has no chance of meeting them today.
It is just past noon when she arrives home, sweaty and flushed from her travels. She takes off her outer clothes and settles in the kitchen with the envelope before her. Her name is written in neat cursive scrawl on the front and, while he does not have any other redeeming quality, Neji does have excellent penmanship. She retrieves a knife from the drawers and cuts open the seal with little ceremony, revealing the white parchment within.
Miss,
I have to inform you that I have met with your guardian as you have asked and acquired his blessing through puzzling means. Seeing as your requirements have been met, I wish to further discuss our plans in person. Make for the Hyuga house as soon as you receive this letter. I will be waiting.
Neji.
She releases a fatigued sigh. Neji Hyuga certain is articulate. And demanding. Perhaps she ought to challenge him to a swordfight to instil the fear of God in him. That is exactly what she should do. She supposes she should pack for her journey. A journey she has no means to make, aside from horseback but perhaps the Hyuga family will find it improper to find their heir’s future bride racing through their acreage on a horse. Horseback is not an uncommon means of travel but the wealthy judge so easily. She snorts derisively to herself. It will be so like them to judge her.
And judge her they do. If only Lord Hiashi had remained frozen in horror for a few moments longer she could have painted his portrait to preserve the moment. As promised, Neji awaits her in the courtyard looking as pompous as ever. He looks put off, whether by her mode of transport or by her presence itself she may never know.
“Walk with me,” he orders and strides off in a dignified manner. Tenten follows his every step with ill-concealed frustration but keeps up with the pace and the distance. They walk in silence and Tenten misses Hinata and Ino’s buffering presence.
“I do not want to marry you,” he says finally.
She snickers. “I thought I made it abundantly clear that I do not wish to be wed to you either.”
“It is most unfortunate that we have to.”
“If you are so disdained by the idea of a union with me, why not conveniently marry someone else?”
“You were readily available and unattached. Also,” Neji turns to face her, “Our encounter that evening resulted in quite a bit of nasty rumours that I can not afford at this time.”
“Rumours?” Tenten let out a humourless laugh. “Are they really rumours if they were all true?”
Neji narrows his eyes and she finds herself at the mercy of his cold, colourless gaze. “Would you rather we not get married and have you and your family live on the streets?”
“My family and I are quite resourceful so do not for a moment think that we would be lost without you. I am doing this solely so that they may live comfortably and because Lady Hinata asked me to.”
“Right, since the decision is final let us decide on the terms of this marriage.”
“Terms?”
“Do I have to educate you on language as well?”
“You know, I can tell you grew up in enormous wealth.”
“My, my. I did not think you were so snobbish.”
Tenten bristles. “Not more than you.”
He raises a brow at her remark, lips turning down into a disapproving line. “We do not need to argue over semantics, Miss Tenten. This marriage will benefit both our families greatly.”
“Then let us make our plans without your crude remarks.”
"I suppose I should oblige."
"You suppose?"
"Must you pick a fight following every statement I make?"
"Is it my fault every statement you make is so full of shit?"
"You certainly have a mouth on you. Let us make that the first condition of our marriage. You will speak proper and without the use of such obscenities."
"Only if you are not so tempestuous when addressing me," Tenten replies evenly. "And you will address me using formalities."
"Fine, my lady. Does that make you happy?"
"It does. Now it is your turn."
"I expect you to accompany me to every gathering I am invited to. Banquets, dinners and the like."
"Noted," Tenten hums. This is turning out to be not all that bad.
"And we are to reside in the same chamber while at home."
"I beg your pardon?"
"My uncle will think it strange if we sleep separately. Do you not agree?"
That is true. It will raise a great deal of suspicion and that is something she certainly does not want. Even so, it's a heinous demand.
"I do not spend much time at the manor. You will be alone many nights," Neji continues.
"I can not argue that it would be strange so I will agree. However, I must warn you that I am particularly skilled with a sword so if you try anything perverse with me I will not hesitate to make something of it."
“I would not dream of it.”

Chapter Text
“I refuse,” Tenten says, gazing feverishly at Neji.
“My lady, must you always be so stubborn.” Opposite her, Neji sighs. She is nearly compelled to give him a good whacking but she abstains, even though he does deserve it.
“I must if it is that I have to put up with you.”
“I thought time would prove you less intolerable but it seems that I am wrong.”
“Do you even know what you are asking of me?” She stands, her palms flat against the table as she looms over him.
“We agreed that you would accompany me to social functions.”
“Once we are married!”
“Then shall I bring someone to officiate the marriage right now?” he asks, raising his brows in challenge.
She scowls and turns away from him. “You can’t ask this of me,” she mutters, kicking at the floor as she speaks.
"Why are you so against this ball? Do you have conflicts with the host?"
"I do and thus you can not force me to go."
"Very well then. I will not force you to go,” Neji concedes. “ If you tell me what it is. We stand to gain a lot by attending this ball so at least allow me to resolve whatever issue you have with the hosts from Sunagakure.”
Tenten sighs. “Fine,” she agrees reluctantly. Her stomach roils just thinking about it, but she cannot very well ignore him, especially after they’ve come all this way to negotiate. “They hurt my brother. I can not attend anything hosted by the likes of them even if it is only to protect his honour.”
“I see,” Neji replies. He stands and advances towards the door, stopping just before the threshold. “I will not force you then. Have a good day, my lady.”
Wedding preparations have her spending far too much time with Neji than she would like. She met with him in the courtyard two days prior to discuss the preconditions to their union and then again yesterday. Today they are to discuss what she can only assume must be his dowry, which she is sure she can not afford but no matter, she is quite the formidable negotiator, Not better than Sakura or Ino but she has watched them a great deal and she is sure she can imitate their confidence. He will call her for this discussion soon but for now, she makes use of the Hyuga manor’s many amenities and extensive weapons repository (which Lady Hinata has allowed her the use despite her father’s agitation).
She stands poised in front of her target, shaking her head to dismiss any thought of Neji or their (sham) marriage. She straightens her spin, inhaling deeply as she pulls the string back. Bullseye, again. Tenten lowers her bow, releasing the breath she had been holding.
“Archery,” a voice behind her muses.”How archaic.” An aggravating and pesky voice.
“Lord Neji,” she regards him with a frown. “What can I do for you? We are not to meet until after lunch.”
“Can a man not visit his beloved?”
Tenten meets his empty gaze with a glare. “Oh, please. I am the last woman on earth you would consider your beloved. So, what is it that you want?”
“I heard from my uncle that someone has removed some equipment from the armoury and came to investigate.”
“Well then, you have found me in possession of them so you may take your leave now. I will return them shortly.”
“You do not have to. I will be Lord of the house soon and you, as my wife, will be Lady of the house. What is mine shall be yours.”
Wordlessly, she turns away from him and crosses the distance to the target to retrieve the arrow. She can feel his eyes on her and it irritates her. He must be quite the audacious man to think that she would ever accept anything from the likes of him.
“I must say your aim is quite good,” Neji continues. “For a woman.”
“You can compliment my skill without mentioning my sex, I hope you are aware of that,” Tenten says. “Why are you still here anyway?”
“Here?” He raises an eyebrow as he stares her down. “On the property that has been in my family’s possession for hundreds of years?”
“I guess I should go then. Farewell, Lord Neji. See you after lunch.”
“How about we have lunch together?”
Tenten turns to face him, irritated. “I think the chilly weather must be making you delirious.”
“I can assure you I am of sound mind.”
“Are you certain? Because I can not fathom why you would make such a request of me. I do not want to see you any more than I should.”
“A simple no would suffice,” Neji quips. “Do not misunderstand me, I do not want to spend much time around you either. It was merely a formality.”
“I do not see how that justifies you but let us assume it makes sense. I will be going now, Hinata and I agreed to have lunch together.” She turns swiftly and hastily retreats into the building before he can get another word in. What an infuriating man.
She is lucky she does not see him outside of their meetings to prepare for the wedding. Just now seemed to be an unfortunate instance but it is over and she does not have to see him until much later. Why on earth would he even ask that of her? Much credit is due for his audacity because as far as either is concerned they both loathe each other. Or at least as far as she is concerned.
"Miss Tenten," a voice says, and Tenten jumps, dropping her bow on the ground.
"Lord Hiashi."
Tenten bends quickly, picking up her weapon once more and brushing off her knees before standing once more. Lord Hiashi stands nearby, hands tucked behind his back and expression impassive as he regards her.
"I take it you are enjoying your stay?"
"Yes, Lord Hiashi." Tenten smiles politely. "It is pleasant."
“I am sure it is.” Lord Hiashi eyes the bow in her hand. "You should enjoy it while it lasts."
"I beg your pardon?"
"It is lucky that I found you like this. I have been meaning to talk to you in private."
"About?" she inquires. It sounds ominous enough to warrant her immediate reaction, her body stiffening.
"Your betrothal, of course. And whatever means you have used to bewitch my nephew so that he marries you."
“I am sorry but I do not understand.”
“I am sure you do. It is an odd picture, is it not? My nephew attends a single ball and becomes smitten after seeing you only once. You, a lowly peasant girl of unknown origins, will gain a lot from your union. Do you not agree?”
“I… no,” she denies vehemently. She shakes her head vigorously, backing away slightly from him, “This is not my doing. I have nothing to do with his infatuation with me. Please do not misunderstand."
"Ahh," he says, smiling coldly at her, "so then your relationship with him is purely based on his attraction to you. You do not feel anything for my nephew?"
Tenten feels her cheeks heat at the implication. "No! That is not what I meant-"
"Then pray enlighten me as to what you mean. You must admit, your behaviour towards my nephew is rather suspicious. Is it money that you seek?"
"Lord Hiashi," Tenten begins, her tone rising slightly, "I swear to you that I care for your nephew as much as he cares for me. The fact that he seeks out my company in such a personal fashion does not mean I harbour any ulterior motives. If I wanted something from him I would have already asked and if I were capable of such, he would already know." Tenten swallows nervously, her heart beating fast against her ribcage. Her palms are moist. "Please, allow me to continue speaking freely. I love your nephew and I would never do anything to harm him. I am completely devoted to him. If there is anything that I want, it is to marry him. To live out the rest of my days with him. I would give everything to him and I would do so gladly. I would sacrifice myself to be by his side through any length of time he desires. I would be happy in that. In fact, I am quite offended by you. I am not so materialistic that I would marry for money. I…" Tenten swallows again, her throat painfully dry, her voice trembling slightly. “I love Neji.”
She has never been so good a liar to herself or anyone else. The words come easily, flowing from her tongue as though they had been written in prose, her mind racing to formulate the most convincing lie she could. She has never been able to keep any sort of emotion hidden from anyone and yet she is managing a very fine job at present. A great feat indeed.
There is a pregnant silence between them which stretches on for too long for Tenten's liking, leaving her wondering whether her response had been adequate. She looks up at him, her eyes wide, trying desperately to read his emotions as to whether he believes her. His stare is piercing, darkening with every passing second. She holds his piercing look, waiting patiently, her chest expanding steadily with air. At last, he gives an almost imperceptible nod, looking at her with his usual indifference, and takes several steps past her. "As it seems that I am getting nowhere with my inquiry, I will take my leave. Have a nice day."

Chapter Text
“I think your father may dislike me,” Tenten says as she takes a seat opposite Hinata.
“I thought he made his dislike perfectly clear if I am being honest,” Hinata replies. “It is quite hard to miss.”
“I think aside from you and Lady Hanabi no one likes me all that much." Tenten sighs, resting her head against her palm.
"Neji does not dislike you," Hinata counters, smiling slightly in amusement at the girl's pout.
Tenten scoffs softly and pushes Hinata's shoulder lightly before saying, "You do not have to tell me any tall tales. He, like your father, has made their dislike very clear. If he feels any differently he certainly has a funny way of showing it."
"I suppose my cousin can be an unkind man but if he really disliked you so strongly he would not have agreed to this arrangement. I can not say he is not strongly opposed but he is not completely against it."
Tenten laughs. "Lady Hinata, I am afraid you are not making a lick of sense."
"Let us just conclude the conversation with the assurance that he does not dislike you. Shall I call for lunch?"
"That is why we are here, no?"
Hinata smiles warmly, "yes, yes we are." She waves a hand to beckon the servant, who promptly enters with a tray, setting it down and bowing deeply as Hinata thanks him. Tenten watches on quietly, her attention focused entirely on the woman before her. Her smile is bright and genuine which is most unlike her cousin but there is some resemblance she supposes. For a very brief moment, she wonders if Neji has ever smiled so genuinely. The idea seems absurd, ridiculous even, yet she cannot ignore its presence. Perhaps in his youth, she decides.
Tenten snaps herself back into reality when she hears Hinata begin to speak, the words flowing easily off her tongue, her eyes alight with happiness. "I feel as though every time I meet with you it is always without sincerity so I am really glad that you agreed to dine with me. I want you to consider me as family even if your union with my cousin is somewhat unconventional."
Tenten blinks owlishly at Hinata, who continues to stare intently at her before laughing slightly. "I had hoped to remain acquainted with you even before I decided to follow through with my plan. I find myself enjoying our conversations and I hope you will feel the same way. It has been too long since I have had someone who speaks so plainly."
"I am honoured by your kindness," Tenten tells her. "Please know that I will endeavour to be a good companion for you as well as a worthy ally to Lord Neji."
There is a silence between them and it becomes apparent that Hinata has something else to say but is hesitant to voice it. "I thought we should have the wedding soon," she says eventually. Tenten frowns in confusion.
"If word gets around that my cousin is engaged to you it may become the object of suspicion," she explains. "Perhaps even attempts on your life."
Her words sink in slowly and Tenten nods stiffly. "Thank you for informing me. I am not so inclined to the commonplaces of nobility or the trappings that surround them but is an attempt on my life not a bit steep. I will not allow it to affect me unduly but I thank you for your concern. Please know that I fully intend to act with due haste." Tenten pauses briefly. "However, may I ask why people may act so rashly if my engagement to your cousin is revealed."
Hinata sighs. "Though we are not so open about our workings as the Uchiha, my family's political affluence is widely known among other powerful people. Some of those who seek power likely believe my cousin to be unfit to carry on the clan name." She pauses. "I do not wish to burden you but it would behove us to be prudent."
"Understood," Tenten responds. Hinata reaches out and places her hand over hers reassuringly. “You truly are kind. My family is indebted to your assistance."
The rest of the meal passed in pleasant conversation, both girls enjoying one another's company until Hinata is called away. Tenten stays seated for some time after, dreading her meeting with Neji again. As usual, it is unavoidable, she thinks grimly. She forces herself up and straightens the sleeves of her dress as best as she can, determined to appear as dignified and regal as she possibly can. When she knocks tentatively on Neji's door, he immediately opens it, allowing her entrance without question. "Sit," he orders, gesturing to the chair across the table from him. Tenten does not obey and moves to stand across him. He raises an eyebrow at her insolence. "I heard about your conversation with my uncle."
"Oh, did he tell you?" Tenten asks, trying to keep the irritation out of her tone.
"No. One of the servants informed me during lunch. I would like to apologise for his misdemeanours against you. He does not believe that our arrangement has any validity and that is unacceptable."
Tenten considers the situation. "You do not owe me anything," she replies firmly. "May we proceed with whatever it is you wanted to discuss so that we do not spend too much time in one another's presence?"
"Is there anything that disconcerts you at all, my lady?" Neji questions.
"Of course not. You will come to learn that very little faze me. It is not as though I have not been dealt harsh words in my young adulthood," Tenten remarks lightly.
"I see," Neji murmurs thoughtfully. "That is quite unfortunate."
"Now that you have adequately wasted my time shall we move on?"
"Right," Neji says, clearing his throat. "I have a letter for you. From your brother." He hands her the sealed envelope sitting on top of his desk. Tenten unfolds it carefully, her eyes scanning the contents rapidly before she looks up.
"Is this your doing?" she demands. “Make my life miserable if you wish but leave my brother out of this." Anger flares hotly inside of her but she forces herself to control it and simply inclines her head, awaiting
"Somewhat. I had been the one to inform him of the ball but he asked that he may attend."
"Why would he wish to do so? Why were you even in contact with my brother? You must have manipulated him in some way. Lee is, he should not be forced to confront those people."
"I did no such thing. I speak truthfully when I say the invitation was extended upon his request. If he wishes to attend Lord Gaara's ball then who are you to stop him?"
"He is my brother! I do as I please with matters pertaining to my family just as you do with yours."
"Do you have such little faith in your own brother that you can not trust him to attend events he deems fitting?" Neji asks, raising his eyebrows and fixing her with a glare. "Stop holding him back."
"What do you know about him? What do you know about me ?" Tenten fires back, anger evident in her eyes.
Neji remains silent for several moments before replying, "How can I know anything if you are not willing to share?"
"And pray tell what have you done that would encourage me to share anything with you? From the moment we met you have treated me with nothing short of contempt. Do not expect me to spill my heart in front of you. We barely know each other."
"Though that may be true, it does not take a genius to understand you are hindering your brother from overcoming whatever obstacles stand in his path. You are causing pain. You are preventing him from growing."
"You are wrong. You think I hold him back deliberately?" Tenten asks incredulously.
"You do." Neji stands and takes a step closer, glaring down at her. Tenten stands and stares right back defiantly.
"And how would you know? Have you ever seen him? Have you spoken to him? You are a stranger to him!"
"I have had enough of this conversation. Let us set the date of the wedding to be within the next month and have someone in my employ arrange the ceremony. I can not stand to be in the presence of such a pigheaded woman any longer."
"Forget the ceremony, I refuse to be wed to you. Tell Lady Hinata to find someone else."
Neji frowns but does not rise to Tenten’s bait. "He arrives at the manor tomorrow as my guest so talk him out of it if you please."
"Fine," Tenten huffs and exits the room shortly thereafter, seething internally. She storms towards her quarters angrily before slamming the doors behind her. Though she knows her behaviour is irrational, she could not bring herself to care. How dare he interfere with her private affairs? How dare he imply that her concern for her own brother is displaced? Her entire being burns at the injustice of it all and yet she knows she can not allow this matter to go unresolved for fear of jeopardising her engagement to Neji. She needs it as much as he does, regardless of how torturous it is to admit.
Tenten sighs. Perhaps it is foolish of her to allow the matter to bother her this deeply. He could very well be telling the truth. He is far more capable than she thinks of making the appropriate judgement calls. She needs to talk to Lee. It is his trauma and it would be selfish of her not to regard his input. She will consult Lee and apologise to her deuce of a fiancee if need be. And if her concern is not ill-placed, she will personally see to the ruination of Neji Hyuga.

Chapter Text
Tenten feels the need to move almost without end; if her limbs are moving the anxiety is gone, or at least she could ignore it for a while. She schools her face into indifference as she paces across her quarters.
Lee is to arrive later, or he may already have, though he is her brother she dreads his arrival. She would rather he be as far away from the Hyuga as possible, seeing as they have a tendency to bring misery to whomever they meet. She sashays to the opposite side of the room, fingers threading through her hair as she moves.
It is not that she is fearful, she certainly is not, but she is worried.
A knock draws her away from her musing, possibly a servant to announce Lee's arrival or breakfast, it may very well be breakfast. Tenten walks stiffly towards the door, hand smoothing out her skirt. It is not a servant, it is someone far worse. She is met with the nacreous eyes of her bastard of a fiancee. He is the last person on earth she wishes to see but she steps away to allow him inside.
"Neji."
"Tenten." His tone is frigid, cold and unsympathetic. They stare each other down, neither quite willing to look away. Eventually, Tenten breaks first, turning to walk over to a chair and sit down.
"I am surprised to see you," she admits, glancing up from under her bangs. "The impropriety of an unmarried man and woman aside, I did not think you were so brave to come to see me so soon after yesterday."
"I came to tell you, " Neji pauses and takes a steadying breath. "I came to apologise. I should not have interfered. It was wrong of me. I had not the intent to anger you so."
She doesn't reply, simply raises an eyebrow in silent inquiry.
"Your brother has arrived," he adds, his voice soft. "He says he is sore from the journey and that he will meet with you at noon." His gentle manner of speech catches her off guard. "I will take my leave now." He bows and turns to depart.
"Neji, wait!" Her voice surprises them both, and she clambers forward, reaching out to catch his arm.
He stops, looking back. "What is it, my lady?"
"You must forgive me," she whispers, "but...it is a little difficult for me to apologise as easily as you."
"That is fine because there is no need to,” he says, the usual apathy in his tone returning.
"No, there is a need. I should not have acted as I did, I should never have treated you so callously. I apologize, please accept my apology."
There is a long pause in which Tenten is unable to look at him, her gaze dropping to the floor. After several moments, the sound of his footsteps reaches her ears. "Forgiven," Neji mutters quietly before stepping past her, and walking briskly to exit her quarters.
She can hear his feet on the stone floors as he makes his way through the house until she can barely make out his presence in the distance.
Tenten waits for several minutes, staring blankly into space as the minutes tick by. Finally, when she is convinced Neji has left her alone, she stands. With some trepidation, she makes her way to the door, opening it slowly. The hallway is empty, and she breathes a sigh of relief.
What was that? Why had he apologised? Why had she apologised?
She groans. So much for her anger-fueled resolve from the day before. He must have done it out of fear that she may break off the engagement. She stupidly apologised as well, what was she thinking?
Tenten closes the door again and slumps against its surface. This is all such a mess. She has yet to seek Lee out and it is imperative that she does.
She needs to get this out of her system, and then hopefully she won't be so stressed around him.
With this thought in mind, she marches out into the main hall, where she heads purposefully toward the guest quarters. When she finally enters the room, she sees Lee lying across his bed, snoring loudly and covered in blankets. She stifles a laugh and sits on the edge of her brother's bed, leaning forward to shake his shoulder gently.
"Lee...wake up..."
The boy grumbles something unintelligible as he rolls over, wrapping himself more tightly in his covers. Tenten huffs, trying one last time.
"Lee! Please wake up." She shakes harder. Lee still does not stir. Tenten's hands curl in frustration, her cheeks flushing a deep red and her shoulders shaking. "Lee, please." She shakes him hard. Finally, Lee blinks open his eyes, squinting in confusion at the light streaming into the room. "Hey."
"Hi." Tenten forces a smile.
Lee pushes himself up, pulling the blanket off and swinging his legs to the ground. "Neji is a swell man, I am pleasantly surprised that a man of his rank treats others so kindly."
Tenten bites down on her lower lip. "I believe you are ill-informed about his personality but I have not come to discuss him. I wish to talk about you."
"About me?" Lee repeats, eyebrows scrunching together slightly in confusion. He watches her expression for a few moments before it dawns on him. "Is this about Lord Gaara's ball?"
"Yes, it most certainly is," Tenten replies sternly.
"Tenten, I know you are concerned but you know I am not one who wishes to dwell on the past. I can not lie and say the wounds dealt by him had not stung and that the damage my pride underwent is irreparable, but I am determined to move past them. " He pauses, searching Tenten's face for some sign of encouragement. Finding none, he ploughs on regardless. "I wish to try and forge a better relationship now that we are allies. If I know you, and I do, you probably gave Lord Neji an earful for sending me that invitation. Please do not be so hard on your beloved my dear sister, especially not in my name."
Tenten lets out a small, humourless chuckle. "You are far too forgiving of people, brother."
"And you are quite the opposite." Lee smiles warmly at his sister.
Tenten returns the smile despite herself. "Do you know if Papa will attend the ball as well? It has been many moons since I last saw him?"
"I doubt he will. Higher-ranked officers have grown lazy and you know how Papa is, always trying to make up for the incompetencies of others. Even I scarcely see him."
Tenten frowns, "Those filthy men and their prejudices. People like that sicken me."
"Once you are married you will discover many people who are so. I hope you do take any of them to heart."
"When have I ever? You know I am not so sensitive," Tenten says with a roll of her eyes.
"Right, you are not," Lee says, stifling a yawn. "When do you suppose it will be breakfast?"
"I think the maids should have begun setting the table about now. Shall we go down?"
Chapter 13
Notes:
i know this is a super short chapter but it took me three days to write because writer's block is such a REAL issue. so sorry for the hiatus (again) i was obsessing over imperfections. on a more important note, thank you so much for the amazing responses i love you all <33
Chapter Text
So the situation is seemingly resolved. Seemingly.
Lee is happy, which means Tenten is moderately content but the sight of her betrothed at breakfast turns her mood sour. Neji enters the garden with a far more content expression than Tenten had donned earlier, taking a seat beside Tenten. “What a pleasant morning,” he remarks, not to anyone in particular but Lee reacts enthusiastically.
“I would hardly call it pleasant in your presence,” Tenten retorts as she picks at the eggs on her plate. She doesn’t look up from her food though and when she does catch Neji’s eye, there are no real sparks of resentment within her gaze but instead something akin to resignation.
"My lady, I thought we talked through the issue this morning," Neji says, his tone carefully neutral.
"Well, I was not being earnest and therefore it does not count."
"Oh? Were you not? You seemed awfully earnest to me, close to tears even," he remarks lightly. He does not allow her to respond as he turns his attention to her brother on his other side. The man is such a nuisance.
"Sergeant," he acknowledges respectfully. "How fares your father?"
"He is well. Overworked but well. He has left the capital and made for the barracks. Just south of here," Lee answers promptly.
"Whatever for? I thought he made lieutenant colonel, ought he not to be in the capital?"
"Those bastards in the militia have yet to acknowledge his promotion," Tenten grits, slamming her utensils down against the table.
"Sister!" Lee scolds. "Please refrain from insulting my superiors."
"You know it is true. They will do the same to you as they are doing to him. All because we have no noble connections," she snaps.
"I suppose that is not true anymore," Neji interjects, drawing Tenten's eyes.
Lee grins, "That is true. Let us rejoice in my sister's betrothal."
"You make it sound as though I am marrying him for his status," Tenten huffs.
"Oh heavens no, I know you would never do such a thing. Lord Neji do not misunderstand my sister is very much against using others for personal gain. She would never do such a thing," Lee clarifies, a little too loudly perhaps.
“Though our days together are few I was able to discern much of her character during our time spent together. If she had any ill intent I think I would have discovered it by now.”
Tenten glowers at him before turning away. Their accumulated time together must be less than a day, there is nothing of note he can know about her. He must be putting on a front for Lee.
"I take it the two of you discussed Lord Gaara's ball?"
"We have," Tenten replies before Lee can. "You can expect my brother to be in attendance."
Neji nods. "And what about you?"
"What reason have I not to? If Lee is attending I have no other choice. I suppose it is not an unpleasant prospect," Tenten says, trying not to let her irritation seep into her voice.
It really is not an unpleasant prospect; she enjoys dancing and she enjoys going to balls. If all goes well, neither she nor Lee would encounter Lord Gaara or any of his relatives at the ball. That would make for a splendid night.
Neji’s eyes are still on her and she meets his eyes defiantly. “What is it?”
He clears his throat. “I will have my cousin accompany you to the dressmaker this afternoon,” he turns to Lee once more, “Do you fish?”
“I am able to if that is what you ask,” Lee responds.
“The lake on our grounds is well-stocked, care to join me while the ladies are away?”
“I would be delighted to Lord Neji.”
Tenten watches their exchange with mild amusement. Very mild amusement, Neji amused her very little. Neji does not act so snobbish around him, which is relieving in the same way it is vexing. He regards her with such little feeling, she still wonders how he agreed to marry her. Regardless of how Hinata denied that he disliked her, he did not show any signs of liking either.
“Sister, before you depart this afternoon would you like to accompany us to the stables?” Lee’s voice draws her from her musings.
“Of course. I did come here on horseback so you will find our stallion among the horses of this house. You can return with him, I suppose.”
“You came here on horseback?” Lee queries, his brow shooting upwards. “Sister, that is not a very appropriate way to show up to a house of such prestige.”
“I am aware.”
“It was a startling sight but not an unwelcomed one,” Neji assures.
Her cheeks flare red at his words but she quickly schools her face back to neutral. “Do not flatter me," she admonishes. “I did it in hopes of disappointing you."
"Then it is a pity I was not disappointed," Neji states, and Tenten swears she sees an almost wicked grin tugging at the corner of his lips.
She rolls her eyes at him and returns her focus to Lee. “I wish to go change into more appropriate riding gear. Will you meet me at the stables?"
“Certainly!” He stands with his usual flourish and places his hands on his hips. “Let us hope Lord Neji finds you appropriately attired.” His gaze falls on Neji and he adds, “Perhaps he could help fashion you a finer outfit.”
"I am sure she will suit whatever she chooses to wear," Neji says dismissively, rising from his chair. "Shall we go now?"
"Yes, let us be off," Lee urges them out of the gardens.
"I shall see you within the hour," Tenten tells them as she makes for her chambers.
Chapter 14
Notes:
i finally regained my ability to write so i'm super happy with this chapter even though it's short. enjoy :)
Chapter Text
Tenten is quite skilled at riding, Neji learns. He will not deny that she has shown a profound aptitude in many areas, even if they are a bit unseemingly of a lady. Her lack of decorous behaviour is becoming easier to overlook as she grows less contumacious.
He regards her for a moment, eyes bereft of their usual ire, the sharpness of the set of her jaw replaced with something a bit gentler. Something soft. She’s happy, he observes, she is smiling now – bright, wide, unrestrained, entirely untamed, so free from all the bitterness he had witnessed up till now. It’s refreshing to see her like this, not just to find her smile so infectious; his own features relax into a small grin when she looks up to see him watching her.
“What?” she says.
"You are quite proficient," he answers. Tenten’s expression becomes a bit guarded at his praise, her eyes flicking away for a moment before returning to meet his gaze once more.
“Thank you,” she replies, though there’s an edge to it that tells him she doesn’t believe him for a second.
“You are most welcome.”
Lee races by, his ostentatious display of good humour belying any real concern on his part, and Neji lets his attention drift back to Tenten There are still things that need correcting between them, he acknowledges. Things that cannot easily be resolved, but which need fixing nonetheless. They are far too unkind to each other for people who are to wed soon, he thinks with some measure of regret. Regardless of the spurious nature of their union, he supposes a certain amount of civility is necessary, at least until they can reach a point where they may be able to tolerate one another without constantly resorting to verbal conflicts.
She is looking at him again, he sees. His attention snaps back to her, though he does not allow her to catch him staring. Tenten seems a little embarrassed as if her thoughts have been caught somewhere indecent. She ducks her head down, then back up again, seeming unable to decide on a course of action. Perhaps, it occurs to Neji, there’s no easy way to solve such a complex problem. Perhaps, in her mind, what they should be doing is simply avoiding one another. Perhaps, she believes that avoidance is the only solution that could ever suffice, and therefore intends to avoid Neji at all costs. Or maybe, she truly does believe Neji will make her life more difficult than it already is and wishes nothing more than to escape the situation altogether. The blame should be ascribed to him, and perhaps his uncle as well. Given the older man's grandiloquence in her presence, he doubts he can mend the rift between them. He can, however, make right by her himself.
“My lady,” he calls out, his voice taking on an authoritative note that he hopes conveys the importance of their conversation. Her head lifts immediately to look at him, brow creasing as she waits for him to continue. “We should ride together tomorrow morning After breakfast.
For a long moment, she stares, her mouth slightly agape. “I beg your pardon?” she asks, apparently having difficulty processing the offer.
"I wish for you to accompany me. I believe it would be beneficial to our efforts to get better acquainted."
A pause follows, during which she continues staring at him and Neji can feel his face warming beneath the scrutiny.
Finally, she speaks. "Are you feeling unwell?" she asks him, concern colouring her voice. She sounds genuinely concerned which Neji finds mildly surprising given how coldly distant she had behaved towards him thus far.
"Perhaps not ill exactly," he hedges. "Though, the issue lies in the fact that we have never properly established ourselves with one another."
There is another lapse of silence, this time lasting longer than the previous. When Tenten finally speaks, she sounds almost hesitant. "Well," she says, her tone cautious. "If you'd like, I suppose, we could... establish ourselves in that regard."
Neji nods his agreement. "It might serve us both to know one another," he says. The words feel strange coming from his tongue, unfamiliar yet oddly pleasing. Tenten seems unsure about her position, but Neji has no doubt he can help her overcome that. With some effort, he clears his throat. "Tomorrow, then," he says, giving her a small nod. "After breakfast."
She returns the gesture, though her lips remain pressed firmly together. "Tomorrow," she agrees, turning her mount around and urging it to follow Lee’s path, leaving Neji standing alone beneath the cool shade of the trees.
In hindsight, he realizes he could have handled the discussion much better himself, but that’s hardly his fault. He can hardly claim to be the best at handling complicated situations, especially ones regarding women. Tenten, despite appearances, was quite different from any woman he knew in terms of temperament, manner and general intelligence.
Despite his misgivings, however, Neji finds himself looking forward to riding with Tenten once more Perhaps, he tells himself, the novelty of spending time alone with her will do wonders in easing any awkward tension that may linger between the That being said, he suspects that the prospect of having her beside him, riding side by side with him, in an environment devoid of distractions would likely prove to be much harder to handle. Be it because of his temperament or hers.
Chapter 15
Notes:
the sole reason for this chapter existing is because i love rock lee so sorry not sorry. and also i wanted to give a bit of insight into tenten's background (it's plot relevant)
Chapter Text
“I am quite curious about your sister,” Neji dithers as he fusses with his fishing apparatus, “Her character is…jarring.” He surveils the crease in Lee’s brow and the downturn of his lips inquisitively.
“Is that a bad thing?”
“Not at all. I am intrigued by it,” Neji shrugs as he lowers himself into position beside him. "I would like to get to know her better."
"You asked for her hand before learning of her character?" Lee asks sceptically as he sets his own hook onto the line.
“Oh. No, not precisely. I know of her somewhat. We spoke at Naruto's ball," he pauses, "Honestly, to say we argued is more fitting."
"So you were the cause of my sister's unpleasant night," Lee muses. "What an interesting turn of events. Her sharp wit charmed you I assume?"
"Something like that." Neji frowns down at the water as though trying to discern the mysteries that lie beneath its calm surface. "I do recall being rather rude, though."
"And here you are, so enamoured by her that you asked her to marry you at your second meeting. What an oddly pleasant love story. So what is it that you wish to know?"
Neji turns to regard Lee's expectant countenance. His eyes are bright, almost eager as he leans forward, the lines around his mouth deepening just slightly.
"Tell me everything you feel will suffice as the basis of a proper courtship."
The fishing rod slips from Lee's fingers and falls back into the water with a gentle splashing sound, but neither of them makes any move to retrieve it.
Lee looks up at him, his features carefully neutral as though he was considering some internal debate. After a moment, a smile breaks across his face.
"Tenten has the ferocity of a lioness. She is skilled in everything a woman of this age ought not to be skilled in. But this does not mean she is not without kindness. Oh no, my sister is the kindest. She took care of both of us when Papa was called away. Even though our age hardly differs and we hardly knew each other then."
"You were not raised together?"
"We were from age seven. Papa probably took pity on us. I came from the orphanage and I am not too sure where Tenten hails from. She never brought it up so I never pried. You will have to ask her of her birth yourself. Or if she will not provide any insight, Papa knows too."
Lee gives a little laugh and Neji feels something strange stir within him. Pity, maybe?
“I see,” he murmurs softly, staring down at the river where his own thoughts seem to wander. Well, tell me how I might make myself useful to you. How may I prove myself worthy of your sister’s attention?”
"What makes you think you are not worthy? She agreed to marry you, has she not?"
"Yes, but that hardly qualifies me as deserving. I have been reluctant to approach her after that first encounter at the party," he admits. "We speak but not of ourselves."
"It sounds as though you need to change that,” Lee tells him with an encouraging smile. "Treat my sister well, Lord Neji."
"I will," he says, and it's earnest for once, "For as long as our union lasts and for long after."
"Good!" Lee exclaims cheerfully. "As long as she is happy I am happy."
"I wish to ensure that her family is in a stable position as well," he adds. "If it is my fortune to marry her, there must be nothing but the best available for her father or brothers, lest their livelihood suffer."
"You are kind but there is no need for that. We live on land owned by your family, if anything we are indebted to you."
"The land would no longer be ours if it were not for Miss Tenten agreeing to marry me," Neji confesses. "That I should take such responsibility for her family's wellbeing, even if indirectly, seems like only fair compensation."
Lee hums thoughtfully and picks up his fishing rod again. "There is nothing that we need, though."
"Perhaps not but there is the matter of your father's mistreatment within the militia."
“He will not accept help,” Lee says as he retrieves his rod and casts his line out over the water, “Even from me.”
"Do not let this matter worry you any longer. I will see to it that everything is sorted shortly."
"Thank you, Lord Neji. You are very kind."
"Not at all,” Neji assures him. "My concern for your father stems entirely from a selfish desire to be allowed to court his daughter. Despite his blessings, I want to earn his respect."
"Our father is not a man who worries about such things, as long as you have a good heart he welcomes you with open arms," Lee says firmly. Neji inclines his head in ack
“I am afraid this is something I must do. It is imperative that I abide by my principles even if it is not needed."
"That is truly profound, Lord Neji,” Lee laughs as he pulls his line in. “May your flames of youth never dim."

Chapter Text
“His drastic behaviour change instils a fear in me I had not known I could feel, Lady Hinata,” Tenten grouses as she trails behind Hinata. “He came to apologise to me for the earlier dispute we had and I was so taken aback I apologised too. Is he sickly? We ought to contact the physician if that is the case.”
“He is in good health, Tenten. I assure you.”
Tenten huffs. He is not. Why else would he have been so understanding of her this morning? He must be gravely ill. “No, I fear he may be near death,” Tenten says.
“If he were gravely ill we would have known. The family physician publicises that kind of information. My great-grandfather insisted it is so during his life. Mostly for reasons pertaining to heirs and inheritance.”
“Is that really all that concerns your family?” Tenten questions as they turn into one of the more secluded side streets.
"I would tell you but I do not think you would take kindly to the answer,” Hinata replies with a laugh.
“That hardly sounds like a family at all then.”
"I suppose it does fall short. There are things no amount of power and money can buy,” Hinata hums, then stops abruptly and turns to Tenten. “I assume Neji has yet to inform you of the family's expectation for you to produce an heir?"
Tenten flounders, her face going scarlet. "Pardon?"
"Though, I do not think your union will last long enough for it to come to that," Hinata adds hastily. She smiles reassuringly at Tenten though Tenten hardly feels reassured. Confused, certainly. Dismal, undeniably. Anything but reassured.
“I would have liked to know that before agreeing to this arrangement,” Tenten mutters indistinctly.
Hinata stops before what Tenten can only assume is the dress shop, though the curtains draped across the windows and the distinct lack of displays makes her feel doubtful. “Why is it that the dressmaker does not just come to you?”
“We used to do that, as children. But my sister and I were always fond of walking into town.”
“Ah yes, how is Hanabi?”
“These days she is preoccupied with her studies,” Hinata says and though her tone indicates nonchalance Tenten discerns Hinata’s dolefulness from her eyes. She does not say anything, in part because she does not want to impose on private affairs and also because she would not know how to comfort her. "I seldom see her."
She understands missing a sibling, Lee is often gone as well, but she does not know the nature of Hinata’s relationship with her sibling, nor whatever archaic Hyuuga customs keep them apart.
“Right,” Tenten says eagerly, taking Hinata’s hand in her own. “Let us find you a stunning gown so everyone may look upon you in awe when you step into the ballroom.”
“I would rather not,” Hinata demurs and Tenten frowns. “Let us find you one instead.”
“There is no reason for us both not to pick something out. I may not have the style of a Yamanaka or the grace of a Hyuuga but I have been to a fair share of balls in my life, you know.”
“No, no I was not doubting your affinity to pick something out I just had not intended to stand out very much. I mean, it is your debut as a member of our party and as my cousin’s bride-to-be, it would be better if the attention were on you.”
“Is there someone there you do not wish to see?” Tenten pauses, thinking for a moment before amending,” Or rather, someone you hope does not see you?”
“Both?”
“Is there an enemy of the family in attendance? Or a suitor who is bitter about a rejection? These seem so fictitious, the stuff of novels, but I have learned that being a Hyuuga is very much the stuff of novels.”
“I am afraid you have the wrong Hyuuga,” Hinata replies, the lightness has returned to her tone and she smiles placidly at Tenten. “Do not worry about it. We’ll both pick out dresses and be done with it.”
“I will allow your obscurity since we are in public but if something or someone is troubling you, I am skilled in combat and I am sure your cousin is too.”
“Father would rage.”
“All the more reason for us to do it.”
Hinata looks on diffidently. "I suppose I could divulge something on the matter." She turns to Tenten, brow knit in thought. “Are you well acquainted with Mr Uzumaki?"
Tenten raises her eyebrows. "I know him quite well, yes."
"I fear that I have become smitten with him."
Tenten's lips pull into an amused smile. "Smitten? With Naruto? He's a blithering idiot, I can not believe he could have charmed you so. You are far too pretty for a fool like him."
"Not so," Hinata murmurs, a faint blush colouring her cheeks.
"Very well, if it is Naruto you wish to charm I shall assist to the very of my abilities," Tenten vows, grinning brightly.
"Thank you kindly, Tenten. You will make a swell addition to our family," Hinata tells her sincerely. "Cousin Neji is heedless to your loveliness."
"Oh dear, you flatter me far too much."
