Chapter Text
It had been years since the last time they saw each other and they never thought they would see each other again until they did. None of them could say it was completely unexpected. At least not Jo. Her sudden change of specialty not long after he left got her professionally closer to him, and there were only so many conferences they were supposed to attend in the country in a year. She knew about the risk, but seeing him across the room from her still took her breath away. The love they had for each other wasn’t a love at first sight type of love. It grew as time went by, slowly but surely. And even after everything that happened, seeing him again after all those years still took her breath away.
Jo didn’t know what to do or how to act. Having too many feelings stuck in her chest, feeling of all kinds, left her unable to move. She didn’t know if she wanted to run to him or from him, so she stood still, hoping and praying that he didn’t see her and thanking the lord above for having her flight scheduled for the next day, leaving very little time for him to do that. But he did. Alex saw Jo, and they both had had something to drink that night.
Apparently alcohol and ex lovers don’t mix when they are both trying to stay away from each other, but wanting so desperately to be together at the same time.
Spending the night together was healing for them both, but left a somewhat sour taste in their mouths finally knowing that it was their last, but loving on each other, kissing each other almost half a decade later, smelling the same perfume and looking into those same sad eyes they both wore as a scar from their failed parents felt like they just learned the definition of bittersweetness. Oh so good, oh so sad.

It had been mere weeks since the last time they saw each other and this time they were sure they were not going to see each other again. Not so soon. Not until they did. Jo was supposed to be away for the entire week. She planned on taking Luna to Disneyland for the first time, since her baby’s birthday was coming up and she was basically being forced to take a few days off by Bailey, who thought it would be okay to recruit her old peds team to operate on a quite complicated case.
After Arizona and Alex left, Bailey didn’t know what to do with the peds service. The staff she once had sure brought a lot of prestige to the hospital, and finding Hayes eased her mind a bit. And then he also left, leaving her desperate once again. This time, no one came to help, though. At least not someone who made her feel safe and proud of the things that happened in the peds ward, so she wasn’t willing to take any risks when it came to the life of her favorite resident’s young daughter. She needed the best, and that was Arizona Robbins and Alex Karev. It was useless to try and convince herself otherwise, so she took advantage of Jo’s time away and called them back. The thing that wasn’t in her plans was that Luna would get sick. There wasn’t going to be a trip to Disneyland anymore.
