“Open! Open! Open!” Amity screamed, slamming the door she’d just fallen through over and over again.
“Amity,” Hunter said gently, walking on eggshells as he pushed himself up off of the soft, muddy loam he’d landed in after the door swung shut on their ragtag group of...
Survivors.
For lack of a better word.
“Just open, for Titan’s sake!” Amity continued to scream wildly as if she hadn’t even heard Hunter, still slamming the door and expecting a different result.
Gus sniffled, trying his absolute hardest to hold himself together. “Amity.” He’d always wanted to see the Human Realm, but never like this.
“Give me back Luz!” Amity was still screaming, her entire body lurching as she pulled the door open and closed, the sound echoing through the forest around them, even as she began to grow sluggish from exhaustion.
Willow finally managed to look past her own shock and looked over at Hunter offering an arm to Gus as tears came to the young Illusionist’s eyes. She pulled a tight handful of grass from beneath her and tore it up with her as she rose to her feet and stormed over to Amity.
“Amity!” She shouted, taking her childhood friend by the shoulders and tearing her away from the door. “Get ahold of yourself!”
Amity stood stick-straight as Willow gripped her just a little bit too tight for comfort. The look in her eyes was so intense. Willow had such a strong sense of determination.
And it made Amity feel so weak in that moment.
Warmth bubbled up over her waterline and mixed with the icy-cold Connecticut rain already running down her cheeks. She wrapped her hands around Willow’s wrists and tried to keep her knees from buckling.
Willow’s face softened and she slipped her arms under Amity’s, pulling her into a hug and taking the weight off of her quivering legs.
“My girlfriend is in there...,” Amity whimpered, taking tight handfuls of Willow’s top.
“Everyone is in there, Amity,” Willow reminded her quietly, her demeanor having calmed considerably now that she had her attention. “Which means we’re going to have to stick together and be strong if we’re going to get back to her.”
Amity nodded into Willow’s shoulder and tried to regain her footing.
“Take a deep breath,” Willow instructed, pulling off of her just enough to show her how to count up and then down on her fingers. “Panic is the enemy. That goes for all of us. We don’t have time to be panicking. Do you understand that?”
Amity wiped her eyes and nodded profusely. “I understand,” she repeated back, her voice raspy from all the screaming she’d done at the door.
“Hunter,” Willow said, turning her attention to him and easing Amity’s head back into the crook of her neck for comfort.
Hunter’s attention snapped up to her. He was equally busy with Gus. “Yes, Captain?”
“You helped build this portal, yeah?” She asked.
Hunter nodded quickly.
Her brow furrowed and she let out a breath. “Well, then let’s get to work on building a second one.”
