“Abiiiiii!” Alexander called from the bathroom, a slight whine in his voice. Abigor groaned, his eyes skimming over the words in his book he had been reading. He looked up to see his husband in his face pouting.
“Yes? Can I help you?” he asked, leaning forward and pecking the other man on the nose. Alexander crossed his arms.
“Can I have some accessories for my meeting outfit tomorrow? I never get to do them, and Aabha finally scheduled me one. I wanna look my best.”
Abigor nodded, looking back at his book. “Of course, love. Feel free to look in my jewelry box for something to wear. The necklaces are tangled though so be careful.”
“Yeah yeah. I won’t mess your little trinkets up.” Alexander laughed. Alexander reached under the bed and dug around for the wooden antique box he had seen once or twice before letting out a quiet ‘Oh, there it is.’ He pulled the dusty box onto his lap and admired red carvings on the surface before opening it. Alexander absentmindedly poked and prodded around the golden jewelry until a glint at the bottom of the box caught his eye. “Hmm, what’s this?” He mumbled and gently grabbed… a scale? Made into a necklace? Alexander smiled and let out a snort, causing his husband to look up from his book curiously and set it down.
“Hm? What’s funny?” Abigor questioned, to which Alexander held up the scale attached to some gold chain.
“You weirdo, did you take a scale out of my pool or something? Don’t get me wrong it’s cute and all-,”
“Tsk, no.” Abigor said, rolling his eyes playfully. “It’s an old friend of mine’s. Very old. It was a memento, so that we remembered each other.” Alexander stared closely at the scale as Abigor told him about some childhood adventures he went on with the mysterious young boy he just couldn’t quite remember the name of. Plucking off one of his scales, Alexander examined them both closely, twisting and turning them under the overhead lights. They were so similarly iridescent, identical even.
“Alex.” called Abigor, snapping Alexander away from his investigation.
“Yeah?”
“Did you even hear a word I said?”
“Sorry, Abi. I’m just… are you sure this isn’t mine? Scales don’t just… look the exact same.”
Abigor nodded, confident in himself. “It can’t possibly be yours. It’s almost-what? 1000 years old. I haven’t touched it since I attached it to the chain.” Alexander hummed in thought for a moment. “I also gave him something. It was a cardinal feather, I believe.”
Alexander’s eyes widened slightly before he scrambled off the bed and into their walk-in closet. Abigor watched, his eyebrow raised, as his husband muttered curses and basically tore apart his side of the closet before letting out a loud “AHA!!”. Tumbling out of the closet and dragging himself over to Abigor, Alexander waved a red, dingy feather in his face.
“Look! I got a feather from my childhood friend too!!” Alexander yelled excitedly, handing the feather to his husband and pulling himself back up onto the bed. “Yeah, from what I remember he couldn’t swim. He was pretty shy actually, now that I think about it.” Alexander continued on talking about the boy, similar to what Abigor had done earlier. Zoning out from Alexander’s ramblings, Abigor turned the feather over in his hands and was taken aback by the small ‘A.H’ was burned into the shaft of the wing.
“But anyways, he’s probably dead now. I’m not sure if he was human or what-“
“Alex, love-,”
“Funny enough, I lose that thing every other month. It’s usually in my guitar case-,”
“Alex.”
“I’m surprised I’ve had it THIS long. I really should put it in a safer pla-,”
“Alex!!!” Alexander jumped, startled, and shot an irritated look over at Abigor, his eyebrow twitching in agitation at being interrupted.
“WHAT?! I was talking. You know, having a conversation?” He said, rolling his eyes. Abigor pinched the bridge of his nose and groaned quietly before looking back at his husband.
“Alexander, look.” He said, pointing to the burned initials on the mangled feather. Alexander gently grabbed the feather and squinted at the markings, his jaw dropping as he slowly came to the same conclusion as the other. “So you’re… You’re ‘A.H.’”
Abigor smiled. “Yeah, I guess I am. And I guess you’re the spoiled prince fish thing I thought I was hallucinating on the beach.” Alexander glared and punched his arm, grinning as his husband rubbed the now aching spot on his upper arm. Each twirled the others gift in their hands, soft smiles visible on their faces. Abigor chuckled to himself. If he believed in that soulmate, destiny-type stuff, this moment would definitely be all the proof he needed.
“What are the odds?” Alexander broke the silence, smiling fondly at the scale necklace wrapped around his fingers. “I really couldn’t have predicted this.” He chuckled. Abigor agreed with a hum.
“I almost feel bad for wanting to kill you. Younger Abigor would be so upset that I almost killed his best friend,” Abigor said with a soft laugh. Alexander shook his head with a smile.
“Yeah, well, I’m sure our kids selves wouldn’t approve of anything we do these days,” Alexander said, bursting out laughing when Abigor let out a snort. Both men went into a fit of laughter, holding their stomachs and gasping for breath. Eventually the duo settled down and grinned at each other. Alexander scooted closer to his husband on the bed and rested his head on his shoulder. “Soooo whatever happened when I left you? A BUNCH happened with me. You wanna catch up?” Alexander half-joked. Abigor smiled and nodded. “Sure, my love. I don’t see why we couldn’t.”
