Work Text:
The same dream played over and over in Mizuki’s mind like a broken record, never seeming to leave them alone. Everytime they closed their eyes, they could hear their own desperate cry.
“Please Ena! Don’t leave me behind!”
Tears fell down in front of their knees, staining their cheeks and clothes they always took the time to make sure looked good. They didn’t care about that now. Far ahead of them was Ena. She was walking with her back turned to Mizuki, their cries seeming to not reach her. Was she ignoring them? The thought of it made their tears flow harder. Their chest ached, as if their heart, which was fragile enough, was smashing into pieces right inside of them. Their worst fear was happening. She hates me now. I know it. I shouldn’t have told her. As Mizuki reached their hand out after Ena, their vision would go dark, and they would awaken in their bed again.
Night after night this went on, until they couldn’t take it anymore.
It was at least 3 in the morning when Mizuki awakened. Tears staining their face, they turned on their phone before pressing that familiar button. Before they knew it they were in the sekai, blinking back more tears in case miku was waiting for them there. As they wiped their eyes, a familiar voice called out, making Mizuki freeze.
“Mizuki? Are you okay? You’re crying.”
Mizuki turned to look at Ena, who was sitting on the ground. She had seemed to be drawing prior to Mizuki’s arrival.
“Ahaha…of course I’m okay, silly. See?” Mizuki flashed their classic smile as best as they could through their stream of tears, which they couldn’t seem to stop. Facing Ena like this made it really difficult for them to stop.
Suddenly Mizuki felt a thumb on their cheek, wiping away a stream of tears. They opened their eyes to see it was Ena’s, a soft smile on her face.
“That’s not your happy smile. I know you.” She spoke quietly, as if to sooth Mizuki’s sobs. “Talk to me. Tell me what’s wrong.”
Without thinking, almost instinctively, Mizuki wrapped their arms around Ena’s waist, pulling her in for the tightest hug they could muster. Being able to hold her like this. Being able to know she was there with them. It was helping them feel better already. “E-ena-” It took everything they had not to sob again when they felt Ena’s arms wrap around them in return, a hand on their head so she could stroke their hair calmingly. Mizuki buried their face in her shoulder, not daring to let her go. The image kept flashing in their mind. Her back turned, walking away from them in hatred…
Their grip around Ena tightened.
“I just had a really bad dream is all.”
“A dream? Must have been a pretty awful dream if it managed to get such a reaction out of you..”
Mizuki was silent for a moment, as if contemplating whether they should tell her.
“I lost you.”
The two were silent for a moment, making Mizuki tense.
“Mizuki, you idiot. Didn’t I say I want to stay by your side, no matter what it takes?”
They pulled their face away from Ena’s shoulder to stare at them, their eyes wide as if her words really got to them. Ena’s face, which had a soft smile a moment ago, was now serious and stern. “I meant what I said. You’re my dear friend. The closest to anyone that I’ve ever been. I’ve never felt like this with anyone. I’d never leave. Not when it’s so obvious that you need me.”
“Ena…”
Ena’s hands cupped Mizuki’s face now. Mizuki blinked in surprise as tears had formed in Ena’s eyes. “I’m not going anywhere, Mizuki.”
A smile crept onto Mizuki’s face as the tears started to flow again. But this time, they weren’t tears of sadness.
“Yeah. Thanks, Ena.”
