this night has opened my eyes

Summary:

Hiyori and Jun were complimentary to each other. Sun and Moon, Fire and Ice, Hiyori Tomoe and Jun Sazanami. Hiyori was like a dazzling star in the sky and Jun was the cosmic energy and force around the star that keeps it from falling into the earth and destroying it. Although Jun knew Hiyori could stand bright on his own, he still believed his own support and guidance were needed.... right? Maybe it never was? Not for Eden, not for Eve, and maybe not even for Hiyori.

Notes:

before i begin let me state that i am still making edits to this chapter and writing the rest of them so i apologize if things change or the chapters aren't finished. okay now that that's said i want to address some trigger warnings that will appear in the upcoming chapters. there are many mentions of self-harm, they aren't super graphic but they're still there, and also some mentions of self-worth issues. there is also talk of depression and manic behavior as well. if any of those things upset or trigger you i advise to click off from this work (i will hopefully be writing some light-hearted hiyojun fics in the future so stay tuned!) also i am somewhat self-projecting onto jun but that's a conversation for my therapist, not ao3. this story takes place after the war/ ! era where hiyori and jun are still both at reimei academy. mostly juns pov but it switches from time to time and it's fairly obvious whose pov it is when it switches. like i said the whole fic isn't finished and with school going on i will try to update as much as i can but please be patient. ok anyways with all of that out of the way, please enjoy!

Chapter 1: When You Sleep

Chapter Text

Jun was always aware of his surroundings and knew his place in this world. He thought he knew his skill and ability as an idol, but even being as talented as himself, he still wasn't sure of it all. Jun's head was always spinning and putting ideas and insecurities into his brain. Although he was conscious of all that went on in his life, he became overwhelmed easily with the world and people around him. Prime example: Hiyori Tomoe. Ever since Hiyori asked Jun to form the unit Eve Jun always wondered "Why?". Why me? Why not someone more talented or more handsome or more confident? He had asked Hiyori this question many times before and even after Hiyori would go on for hours about how 'Jun-kun is the best unit partner a person could ask for~" he always felt uneasy, almost unable to comprehend anything that Hiyori would tell him. How could anyone be happy or even satisfied with Jun as not only their unit-mate but more importantly as their friend? Jun knew how talented Hiyori was, how bright he shined in this dull, empty world. But more importantly, knew how important being an idol was to Hiyori. Just the thought of holding Hiyori back from his goals made him feel empty inside. The last thing Jun would want is to drag others, to drag Hiyori down with him on this dark path he was slowly leading down.

"Another sleepless night" Jun thinks to himself as he checks the time on his phone which reads '3:09 am'. He showered and prepared for bed hours ago, and yet he's not one bit tired. His body needs the rest but his mind is wide awake. Hiyori has been asleep for a while now which gives Jun an odd feeling of loneliness. He hasn't been able to get a good night's sleep in months but recently it's been a lot worse; barely getting a good hour in before Hiyori's way-too-early alarms wake him up. If this pattern continues it's really going to fuck with him. He gets up to go to the bathroom trying his best not to wake Hiyori. After washing his hands and messing with his hair he stares into the mirror for a while, just looking at his face and body. Everything feels different. He didn't feel like himself, everything felt wrong. He starts to get worked up but tries to calm himself and just breathe for a few seconds. He opens the bathroom door, tip-toeing to his bed before he hears a slight mumble from across the room.

"J-Jun is that you? W-What time is it?' Well shit, there goes trying not to wake Hiyori. Hiyori sounded tired and confused, it was a bit adorable, like a lost puppy.

"Yea it's me Ohii-san, go back to bed" Jun replied as he slipped into bed. Hiyori adjusted his position in bed, lifting himself up a bit to talk to Jun.

"Why are you awake at this hour? It's awfully late, you need your beauty rest Jun-kun" Hiyori sounded more awake and a bit playful too.

"Couldn't sleep" Jun replied with a soft, mellow voice. He was hoping Hiyori wouldn't bother and would go back to sleep so they both wouldn't be a wreck the next day.

"Why not? What's keeping you awake? Hiyori questioned. 'Why not' if only there was a simple answer to that question.

"Just thinking about... things, but I'll get to bed soon I promise" Jun was hoping his body would let him fulfill that promise and allow him to rest, and preferably soon.

"You better, we have practice tomorrow and if you can't keep up then I'm going on without you~" Hiyori said friskily as he laid back down on his bed.

"Mm-hm sure" He hummed. Jun would never admit it but he liked when he and Hiyori would tease each other back and forth, especially on a night like tonight when Jun has nothing better to do than banter with his unit-mate. "Goodnight Ohii-san," Jun said followed by mumbling on the other side of the shared room which Jun assumed was a good night back to him. He felt better even with his and Hiyoris's short conversation. Jun laid on his bed for a bit before eventually falling asleep.
