Chapter Text
It is a sunny day. The weather is warm, without being oppressive. Shoyo is sitting on a chair in the garden, right in front of the sunflowers, listening to the sound of the cicadas and tangling his fingers gently in Kiyoomi's blackish hair.
He is resting his head on Shoyo. Sakusa's legs are draped over a yellow blanket. He doesn't like the itchy feeling when his skin is in direct contact with the grass.
The aroma of mint chocolate dances in the air. Shoyo bathes in it, it seeps into his pores to make his heart rumble like midnight thunder. It clouds his pupils and his judgment as well. Because it is the so it is that he smells its alpha and thinks that its exact fragrance. It sweetens his life, it also refreshes it, he craves it to perfection.
Hinata closes his eyes and enjoys the moment, he says nothing, although he would like to say many things. Shoyo is the kind of person who always has something to talk about, but he keeps silent because Kiyoomi's eyes are well set on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. A book that, by the way, has been driving him crazy since the beginning of his pregnancy. Shoyo knows that Kiyoomi is only reading it because Shoyo has a not-so-healthy obsession with romance novels.
But Shoyo has been silent for over half an hour. And a pregnant omega needs attention to keep from dying, at least that's what he usually says when his husband returns from training. Kiyoomi always calls him an exaggerator, but Shoyo firmly believes he doesn't understand because he's not the one carrying seven extra kilos.
"Does Elizabeth already know that Darcy is the one who paid for her sister's dowry?"
"No, Shoyo and I didn't know either, thank you," Sakusa says with annoyance, rolling his eyes.
"Don't read anymore."
"Why? It was you who asked me to do it" Sakusa closes the book and turns his body a little to look directly at Shoyo with his mischievous look and his countenance of mock sadness.
"I'm going to die, Omi-san. I'm like Tinkerbell, I'll die if you don't pay attention to me."
"For heaven's sake, Sho, I forbid you to keep spending so much time with Oikawa and Atsumu. It's hurting you, you'll soon run out of the only two brain cells you have."
"Hey, how rude. Besides, Oikawa-san came to wait and meet Nao! Of course, I want to see him!"
"It's hurting you. You're learning things you shouldn't be learning."
"Does that mean you won't pay attention to me? " His voice trembles a little. Maybe he's using one of his blackmail tricks.
Kiyoomi has always been weak, but since Nao is on her way, maybe, it's just that she's become a little softer and more condescending than usual. "But it's just that you're such a big softie, controlled by Shoyo," from Atsumu has made it very clear to him
“Shoyo...” Kiyoomi says as a warning. Although he finds himself amused.
"Sakusa... “ He replies in the same tone.
"Do I remind you that now legally that's your last name too?"
"Do I remind you that I'm carrying your son?" Shoyo emphasizes his comment, placing his hand on her belly.
Touché.
Okay, that Kiyoomi never finds a better answer for that. So, he frowns for a moment, as he holds his gaze before giving in to Hinata's —not so Hinata anymore— smirk of superiority.
"Good, but just know that it's made you as unbearable as Miya."
"You love me and also Atsumu-san. He is your best friend."
"You are."
"Yeah, I'll keep our secret, I'll never tell him that you love him a lot"
"Shut your mouth."
"Ah, ah, ah. Don't talk to me like that in front of Nao, she's listening to you. " Shoyo caresses himself gently, and his features relax. "I can't wait to hold him in my arms."
Sakusa smiles quietly because the image that Shoyo is giving him seems precious, perfect, and he thinks it should be eternal. Sakusa sticks his ear to the omega's bulging belly. Hinata's hand falls again on his head, letting his fingers wrap around the softness of his hair, to steal a thousand and one sighs from him.
"I can't wait any longer either," Kiyoomi says softly. "I wish I had your eyes. They are beautiful."
"Do you think when you grow up, you'll have your curls or will it be messier hair like mine? I like yours. I can tangle my fingers... I also like your polka dots, they are cute."
Sakusa closes his eyes, he listens perfectly to Nao's heartbeat. He doesn't know him, doesn't know what his appearance will be. He doesn’t if Nao have a bright and exuberant personality like Shoyo's; or if he will be disdainful and introverted like Kiyoomi, but he loves him.
"What if I don't do well?"
"I think you'll be a perfect parent, Omi-san. Maybe we'll make some mistakes, if I'm honest, I'm also terribly scared and excited, but I always am when I start a new adventure. Nothing excites me more than starting this adventure by your side."
Sakusa was defeated. Completely left out of the game. He has not been able to retort anything. He is silent because he is a man of deeds and not words. Kiyoomi gets down on his knees and takes the back of Shoyo's neck. He seals a pact of silence with their mouth. Sakusa shows his entire devotion with a kiss, with traces of love wrapped in his saliva.
For there was no truth better told. It didn't matter if he was terrified, if he appeared to Shōyo by his side, everything would be fine.
How did it come to this? How is it that until a few hours ago they had shared the day in their garden and now their lives depended on a thread?
Everything had happened so fast, that he can't even remember everything accurately. There is only Shoyo's startled face when he told him “I’m going into labor”. His frayed nerves, with the speed at which Shoyo was losing strength.
Premature.
Three weeks couldn't be that bad, could it? Why had Hinata gone into the emergency room? When everything was supposed to be planned.
His hands are sweating and his stomach is twisting with desire. Sakusa sees a group of nurses coming and going. He also hears the hustle and bustle of security at the entrance. It is certainly shocking that half of the proclaimed monster volleyball generation is in one of the obstetrics waiting rooms. Although Sakusa is grateful that Kenma has traveled from Tokyo to Osaka to take care of the media, it is nonetheless tiresome that their privacy is being invaded.
The situation is tense. It can't be otherwise when dealing with an omega pregnancy, even more so when it's a man. It's overwhelming and even more nerve-wracking how much of a drama queen Atsumu becomes when he's in Oikawa's arms and as if one drama queen in his life wasn't enough, the Argentinian setter, arrived to hurt him and let him know that Kiyoomi must now have patience for two of them.
At least he no longer hears Bokuto's worried whining, because thank goodness Akaashi has taken him to get something to eat at the cafeteria.
Still, the feeling in his stomach hasn't improved. His head is spinning and his palms haven't stopped sweating. He looks up at the ceiling, the white lights of the hospital, blinding him; but he can't help evoking his memories of the afternoon and wonders what he has done wrong.
But he is interrupted by the doctor's voice.
“Sakusa Shoyo's family?”
Kiyoomi stood up almost with a jump, the doctor inspected him with his eyes, silently. Sakusa felt an immeasurable emptiness in his stomach.
Akaashi just arrived and placed a hand on Kiyoomi's shoulder.
“You have a very healthy boy, despite being premature. He'll be in the incubator for a few days, but overall, he's doing well and the Omega is fine. They are both strong, you have a beautiful family, sir. Congratulations.”
Sakusa let out a sigh from deep in his chest. And he stood in shock for a few moments. He is a father. He has become the father of a little boy, a healthy one, and Shoyo is alive. They were both alive and well.
“A child!” shout Bokuto. He is the first to break the silence and evaporate the tension that had been building. “My Sakura has a cousin, Akaashi!”
Bokuto run up to hug Kiyoomi, to spin him around. Sakusa helped him even if he was freaking out a little. He's not effusive but knowing he's a father feels even better than winning the Olympics.
“Omi-Omi, you're a father! “Atsumu whimpers, with tears peeking out of the corners of his eyes. He let out a huge, happy laugh and ended up shaking every one of his fears out of Sakusa's head. “I hope he looks like Shoyo-kun and not you. He is such cute. And please don't bathe him in Lysol!”
“My son doesn't disgust me, Miya. You do," he says curtly, but happily, with a smile that has rarely been seen on his face, but it's nothing new when it comes to Hinata.
“I can't handle the mental image of a mini-Chibi-chan!” Oikawa exclaims, also on the verge of tears. Hanging onto Atsumu's back.
“I think I'd better go see Shoyo. The doctor is waiting for you” Kenma stood in front of him with a discreet smile on his lips “Thank him for continuing to stay interesting”
Sakusa affirms with a nod and turns to the doctor, who was waiting moved by the effusiveness of the most important group of sportsmen in the country.
“Follow me, Mr. Sakusa”
Kiyoomi let himself be guided through the corridors of the hospital until he arrived at a door with the number 302. With a two-seater armchair at the back and a window on the right side.
In the middle was the gurney on the side of the incubator, Shoyo was there, connected to the IV by injectable. Tired. I had never seen him looking so exhausted, but he looked happy.
“We made it, Omi-san. We are here with you," he says barely in a whisper.
Sakusa hurries to reach him and wrap his arms around shoyo’s neck. He wants to cry from sheer relief. It has brought his soul back to his body.
“God, I was so scared. Shoyo, don't ever scare me like that again. For a moment I felt like I was losing you.”
“We're fine, Omi-san. We're fine and with you. We will never leave you alone-Shoyo released some sweet pheromones to reassure him and gave him enough time to do so. I love your hugs, but I think someone is waiting for us.
Sakusa lifted his face and a nurse holds Nao in her arms, with a smiling smile on her face. "The child needs to eat, take him to his Omega." is what she says.
She reaches over and helps Kiyoomi hold him the right way. Oh, he's a scared alpha fool. Extremely afraid. Yes, he is so tiny, so cute, so fragile. Sakusa is sure he would give his life to protect Nao.
He has an upturned nose like Shoyo's, he can almost see every single feature of his Omega's face, but with the two moles of the Sakusa family. There is barely a trace of dark hair. He feels like it's the perfect match.
I think I might cry.
He walks at a slow pace, very slowly, still with terror imbued in his every movement. Sakusa leads him to Shoyo who is sitting waiting for them, He doesn't hold back, he never does. He is always sincere with his emotions and sensations. He cries with desire because he thinks he could die of love right there.
Because he feels lucky because he has a family. Now they are parents and now his whole life has been poured into two people.
And there is nothing, absolutely nothing that can compare to that feeling. There is the mutual feeling of "It's been worth every damn second of waiting". Because they are and that will never change.
